“So we won the match, and I hammered Cloyre Timhook for good,” James finished triumphantly. Lily frowned. “Hammered Cloyre? What do you mean you hammered her?” She asked, eyebrows raised.

“I just meant I caught the snitch before her,” James said hastily, realizing he had said the wrong thing. But Lily’s frown even more pronounced now. “Wait a second; she was in the Hospital Wing last year, after the Final Quidditch Match. Did you do anything to her, Potter?”

“No,” James said quickly. But seeing that Lily looked positively dangerous, he said in a rush, “Well, one of her friends tried to curse me during the match so Sirius and I – err –” He didn’t need to go on further. Lily’s face showed nothing but fury. He could tell she’d only become angrier if he explained more.

“For heaven’s sake, Lily, Timhook’s one of the worst Slytherins you could come across,” he said, almost pleadingly. Lily clenched her teeth. “She isn’t,” she said. “You have no right to “hammer” here as you call it – Just as Cloyre doesn’t have any right to hammer you, even if you are one of the worst Gryffindors. EVER.”

James looked shocked at the last few words. “Come off it,” he said. “I’ve helped Gryffindor win the Quidditch Cup for five years.” Lily didn’t seem to be affected by this. “And much good may Quidditch do to a big-headed good-for-nothing git like you,” she said heatedly. She liked Cloyre Timhook immensely, and she showed her liking for the Slytherin Seeker too. Cloyre was one of the only nice Slytherins you would come across – She was extremely gentle, but also very firm, studious but of breath-taking beauty.

But that wasn’t why Lily Evans was siding with Cloyre right now – The fact was that she strongly believed in Inter-house unity and she felt that a part of the unfriendliness between the Slytherins and Gryffindors was due to the fact that the Gryffindors showed no desire to end the hatred between the two houses. Also, she could tell that James disliked Cloyre only because she was on the Quidditch team against him.

James looked extremely put out but he wasn’t going to give up so easily. “I received an O on last year’s Defence Against the Dark Arts Paper,” he said impressively. “I did too,” Lily answered dryly. She was now looking for an excuse to get rid of him, and deeply regretting that she had agreed to accompany him here.

“Errr….I seriously need to get some sleep,” she said tiredly. James smiled. “Okay Lily, see you in the common room, then,” James said brightly. Lily smiled to herself as she spoke. She was glad that she was the Head Girl now – She would be in the Heads’ Common Room, as far away from James Potter as possible. Previously, she’d often had to go to bed early just because James kept annoying her.

James suddenly realized that he would be in the Heads’ Common Room and wouldn’t be able to see her that night at all, since Dumbledore has given him the position. He didn’t tell her though. He was saving “the secret” to surprise her. He also felt a pang of guilt when he thought that he was supposed to keep order, not curse students himself. But he quickly shrugged off the feeling. “Bye then, Miss sexy,” he said. Lily didn’t quite know how it happened – She hadn’t even planned to do it. Without realizing it, she smacked James hard across the face.

For a moment, she stood rooted to the spot, horrified at what she had done. True, what he had said had been offensive to her, but she had never intended to do what she had just done. What would he do now? She didn’t wait to find out. She turned and ran up the path that led to the castle, on the verge of desperate tears.

“Shouldn’t have called her sexy, you mean?” James asked, eyebrows raised. Lupin nodded. James looked, if possible, gloomier. “It was the truth, mate,” he said, though he did make a mental note not to do so next time – If there ever was a next time, that is. “But I really don’t understand why I shouldn’t have called her that, Moony.” Lupin shook his head in disbelief, and went back to his Transfiguration book.
