Head Boy

““There is no such thing as chance”

Dinner was more of a celebration than a meal that night, especially after it was discovered that both Harry and Hermione had received badges to match Ginny’s, the former’s reading Head Girl, the latter’s Quidditch Captain.

“Don’t worry, Ronniekins, you’re still a prefect,” Fred sniggered. Ron, who had been ecstatic when his badge had found him, the year before, only scrunched up his nose and looked away. Ginny had a feeling he might have been expecting Head Boy, and nearly felt sorry for him. Not very, of course – she had always been pretty sure Head Boy would elude him: Ron was alright, but he was not top-notch material, never had been.


The day next was a whirlwind of rushing, last-minute packing and shouting – the last courtesy an angry Mrs. Weasley, whose cheeks were red as she scolded Ron for not having packed his broomstick earlier. Ginny had a feeling her mother might have been put off by the set of new dress robes her daughter had tentatively asked for, but perhaps she was wrong – the dress robes, Molly Weasley had bought for her youngest without complaint, and they now lay, wrapped in brown paper and plastic sheet, at the bottom of Ginny’s trunk.

Once aboard the Express, Ginny found herself a compartment with Neela Fordshire, a close friend, though she had to leave it soon, courtesy the fact that she was supposed to attend the meeting of prefects that took place, each year, in a corner of the Hogwarts Express.

It was several minutes after exiting her compartment that Ginny realized she had no idea where the compartment she was supposed to enter, was. She asked a fourth year, who was clueless, before spotting a shade of familiar black hair through a pane of glass – Harry! – and, sliding open the door of the compartment, walking right in. Harry had been lounging by himself, his legs resting on the berth in front of him, but he sat up the moment she entered, hastening to straighten his glasses.

“Where’s Ron? Hermione?” she asked, getting straight to the point.

“Gone,” Harry replied simply, looking slightly disappointed, for some reason. “Hermione’s supposed to leave earlier than the other prefects, since she’s Head Girl. Ron went with her. Why?”

“I’ve no idea where the prefects’ compartment is,” Ginny replied, giving a shrug of her high, slightly freckled shoulders. She held up her wrist, and glanced at her watch. “See you around, Harry – I’m already five minutes late for the meeting.”

He nodded, and Ginny walked out of the door. It took her another ten minutes to find the compartment, which turned out to be the last at the back of the Express. The door was, like the others, glass, but curtains hung behind it, so that she could not see the inside, even though shards of conversation flew outside and she realized, with a rather gloomy feeling in the pit of her stomach, that the meeting had already commenced.

Great impression, I’m going to make.

With a sigh, she pushed open the door and stepped inside. The buzz of conversation in the compartment came to an abrupt halt as everyone turned to look at her, and Ginny barely took notice of the fact that the compartment was twice the size of the others that the Hogwarts Express housed.

“Hello,” she said cheerfully. It was better to pretend to be clueless, she reasoned with herself, than look exceedingly embarrassed by the fact that it had taken her a quarter of an hour to find a compartment everyone else had had little difficulty in reaching. “Anything the matter?”

“Of course, Weasley, you’re late,” a cold voice drawled in response. Ginny half-turned her head and realized, with an upsurge of dislike, that the person who had addressed her was Draco Malfoy.

“That’s not your problem, Malfoy.”

It was a pity he was a prefect in the first place, but Ginny guessed that could not be helped – given the general lot of Slytherins, Malfoy must have seemed, by far, the best choice to Dumbledore.

“Isn’t it, though?” Malfoy’s cold, grey eyes narrowed, and the intensity of hatred in them made Ginny raise her chin a notch more than usual, hold her higher, perhaps in a more dignified manner. “I’m the Head Boy, Weasley. In other words, you are ... working under me.”

He seemed to be savouring the last three words, and it was a clear wonder that Ginny’s mouth did not drop open. “You?” she asked, the doubt in her tones clear. “Come on, Malfoy, Dumbledore’s not stupid, he can’t have –”

“Ginny, please.”

Ginny blinked, looked up and realized that the spaker was Hermione. She was standing at the head of the other people in the compartment, in the same horizontal line as Draco, but there was at least three feet’s distance between the two. The Head Girl’s chin quivered slightly, and it was apparent, when she spoke, that the words cost her some effort. “I’m sorry, but that’s out-of-order, Ginny. You can’t say things like that at a prefects’ meeting.”

Ginny swore loudly, and Malfoy cast her a rather amused look. “I’ll have to report that to the Headmaster, Weasley,” he said coolly, but he still sounded humoured at her fluency at swearwords, and Ginny raised an eyebrow as he straightened and walked over to her. What did he want, now? It was a moment before she realized her mistake – he was not walking towards her, but towards the door of the compartment, near which she still stood.

Reaching it, he slammed the glass door shut, before turning to face her. Chin still held high, Ginny took a rather contemptuous step backwards, noticing that his immaculate, black robes brought out the silver in the chain dangling around his neck, a chain that ended in a clearly expensive emerald oval. Malfoy returned the contempt in her eyes with a lingering glance of scorn at her ripped jeans.

“Sit down, Weasley. This meeting’s already begun.”

Yeah. I sort of feel like it's a cliche, now... and a lot of writers fall straight into it. Head Boy Malfoy, Head Girl Granger... it kinda makes things too easy. ESPECIALLY if you write that the heads have their own dorm.

You don't like R/Hr? Wow, that's pretty much a first for me. xD People are usually fine with R/Hr! But, as far as this FF is concerned, it's ONLY D/G. Totally. You'll see how soon. -shifty-
