From her seat Hermione watched Harry peering out of the window pane,squinting through the rain to see if he could see-
"Harry,stop it!He's not there!You and your paranoia."Ron's last statement drifted into a whisper.Hermione could tell he was scared,too.
Everyone was.It had been two years since the incident in the Deparment of Mysteries.In those two years,Voldemort had risen farther than he ever had in the old terror days,with nothing to prevent him.The Order of the Phoenix was too busy trying to hide Harry.When they finally realized that Hogwarts was the only safe place left,they moved him back here.This was the first time Hermione had seen him in nine months.
I've missed him so much,Hermione thought as she walked over to Harry.
"Harry?"She said softly.Harry lifted his head,and Hermione gasped softly at his tear-streaked face.
"Oh,Hermione,"His voice was little more than a murmur,"He is coming.I can feel it."
"Harry,shhh."Hermione sat beside him,heart turning to lead as she realized that Harry knew what his fate would be.He would defeat Voldemort.But he would never be able to bask in the glory.His loss was too much.
Hermione jumped as a noticible weight fell onto her lap.She looked down,surprised at the sight of Harry's head.
"Hermione,we're gonna win.But why don't I feel like I'll survive?"

For the umpteenth time that day,Ron did a double take as he glanced at Harry.Everyone but the boy in question had noticed his scar glowing steadily brighter every day;today was a pulsing red.
Ron's attention strayed away from the scar,he was finding it hard to look at.He instead turned his gaze over Hermione.A surprising surge of jealousy blinded him as he caught her staring at Harry.
She's worried,Ron thought sensibly,We all are.Every day Harry drifts farther away,ever since...
Ron cringed as he remember that awful night.
"Ron"Harry's harsh voice rang clear through his head.He turned to the boy,proud of the strong light convulsing in the bright green eyes that bore holes into his own.
"Yessir"Ron said,then winced at the shudder that racked his body.He watched the cracked lips twitch downward;he could expect a scolding from Hermione later.
The laughter that echoed through the hall was loud,certainly unexpected.
"You-you just called me SIR!"Harry laughed again,and for once he did not gain stares.People smiled in wonder.Many had never heard Harry utter a word since his return.
Ron mouth curved upward as Hermione cried,"How silly of you,Ron!"
Soon the hall was ringing with laughter,but only one notice that the laughs did not escape Harry's lips.



Really not the best I've ever doen,but I promise it'll get better.

Draco Malfoy leaned against a wall,the laughter ripping into his mind given no heed as he stared at Harry Potter.Though Weasley hadn't noticed,or anybody else for that matter,Harry had stopped laughing.Confusion was thickly wrapped around him,Harry was staring about with wide eyes.Draco's brow crinkled even as Dumbledore called for silence.
He straightened as the hall quieted.He could understand Harry's horror and confusion.The teens,his friends,all that surrounded him,their laughter was high and unnatural,strained with grief.
Draco's face twisted sharply as his right arm shook.He glanced at the stump it ended in,sending a thousand curses at Harry.
It was then that Harry swerved to look at Draco.There lied the pain and sorrow that Draco had to finally face.It was there.It was real.
And how did he respond?Like any well-bred Malfoy.With so much anger in his glare that the lightning scar on his foe's head glowed a bright orange,the flared out,losing all color.
Draco felt his emotions tumble as he let it go and looked away.It was getting to be too much.That he never helped.Anyone.He felt so useless,what was the point.There was only one thing that anchored him to this earth.
Harry.
In the end,Draco knew he would follow Harry.To his glory.To his doom.It didn't matter.It wasn't about him.It was about Harry.
It was always about Harry.And Draco hated the world for that.We're all 17,his mind screamed.No matter how high we are held in esteem,we don't know how to deal.
And Draco was left to battle his insecurities.But not alone.The Boy Who Lived was right there with him,coaching him on.
"You can do it,Malfoy."
Yeah,I can do it,Potter.

"It's a bit strange,"she heard a sob.
"Lavender?"she pulled back her curtains on the crying girl.Lavender looked up,covering her puffed eyes with her hands.
"Are you alright?'Hermione asked as she took a seat beside the girl.Lavender furiously shook her head.
"No.For the first time in nine months a heard Harry talk.But it was wrong.Wrong,wrong,wrong!"she cried angrily,mashing her forehead with tightly-balled fists.
"Lavender,"Hermione cooed,stroking her arm sympatheticlly(s/p?),"Lavender,what's wrong?Weren't you happy?"
"Hermione!You're his best friend.Didn't you see it?!"Lavender's babbling was starting to make some kind of terrible sense,but Hermione felt the need to hear it voiced,so she probed further.
"What?"
Lavender blubbering stopped so suddenly Hermione thought she had fainted.She gave her a shake,jumping with a start when Lavender pulled away and stood up.
"I don't believe it.You didn't see it."
Hermione's mouth twisted in horror as Lavender walked away.She closed her eyes briefly,then opened them.
"No,you're wrong,Lavender.Harry does not know that he is going to die!"
