He somehow knew. He was somehow prepared. But still, he couldn't face it. He couldn't face the truth whispering slowly at his ear, the cold wind despite the season. Draco Malfoy was standing there, hidden behind a mask, surrounded by lies.
Because that was what they were : lies. Living lies. Simple puppets existing through an illusion of superiority. And he was one of them. He was the enemy. He couldn't understand what happened to him, to what he used to be, to who he used to be. Despite his fierce, arrogant attitude, Hogwarts used to be his home, not the other side, like an iron giant staring coldly at him.

It reminded him of all these years before the war. When all he had to worry about was Quidditch, and making Potter's life a living hell. Well, looking at his hollowed face and his dull eyes, he somehow succeeded, but not the way he wanted to. He wanted these years back. This feeling of warmth, like a Christmas day. With hope and joy glowing in everyone's eyes.

And that's why he took off his mask and told students and teachers, the other side, Hogwarts, his family, 'I'm back home.'

And that's why he smiled as he saw a green light.

He had waited seven years for this day to come. Today would be the end of the war. Maybe the end of his life. Maybe the end of everyone's life.
He was tired. He couldn't stand the sound of fatality, screaming at his ear. It was a sunny day. A sad day.
He recognized someone among the dark figures he had to face. Someone whose eyes were filled with fear. Grey eyes behind a white mask.
Draco Malfoy.
He had finally made his choice.
It reminded him of his life before the war. When Hogwarts was his home, and not a battle field. When Hogwarts was his family, and not a graveyard.
He could remember this feeling of warmth. Just like a Christmas day. He could remember how everyone in Hogwarts was a member of his family. Even the ones he hated, even the ones he had never cared about.
And just like everyone, he wanted these years back.
And that's why he smiled as he saw Draco take off his mask and say :
'I'm back home.'
And that's why he cried as he saw a green light.
