Chapter 8
Ron ran up the stairs as fast as he could. He figured Hermione would have run to Ginny’s room, since that’s where she was sleeping. In front of her door, he wrapped his hand around the knob. It slipped off when he tried to turn it. He cursed under his breath.
“Hermione! Open the door! I’m sorry. I didn’t mean what I said. It came out wrong.” Ron said pounding on the door.
“Go away!” he heard her wail through the door.
“I said I was sorry.” Ron said, not moving away from the door.
“Your such an emotionless git!” she yelled back.
“Come on Hermione! Just open the door.”
“NO!”
“Please!” Ron begged. He didn’t want to lose his friendship with her. Ron had strong, overwhelming, feelings for Hermione. He was fine with only being her friend (even though he would of liked to be more than her friend) but now he seemed to have blown that. He would stay at her door until she forgave him, he decided. He was not going to lose her friendship.
“I don’t even want to look at you. Just go away!” she said.
Ron cursed in frustration again. Then he pulled out his wand, tired of knocking on her door. “
Alhoromora!” he said and the door’s lock clicked open. He opened the door and walked in cautiously. Hermione was kneeling by her bed, her head hiding in her hands.
He walked over and slowly put his hand on her back. “I’m sorry Mione.” He whispered to her.
She jumped at his touch and looked up at him angrily. “Usually when people lock the door, they want privacy.” She said, her eyes flashing.
“I know, but I just wanted to say-“
“Your sorry. I got it. Now leave.” She said, cutting him off.
“Not until you forgive me.” He replied, not wanting to give up on her.
“Why should I forgive you?! You obviously don’t think I’m worthy of going to a stupid ball. Why do you want my worthless forgiveness?” she said. Her eyes were brimming with tears. He saw that her eyes were already red from crying and they were beginning to get puffy, but Ron couldn’t help to notice how beautiful she looked.
“It’s not worthless.”
“Whatever.” She said and hid her face in her hands on her bed again.
Ron bent down and got onto his knees next to her. He then gentle moved her head from her hands so she was looking at him. “I wanted to ask you to the ball, but Krum got to you first. I really wanted to go with you.” He told her quietly.
“You did ask me. As your last resort!” Hermione said, not missing a beat. She moved a little away from him, staring daggers at him.
“You weren’t my last resort. You were my first choice. But I was to shy to ask you.” Ron confessed.
Hermione said nothing but stared long and hard at him. Her eyed were penetrating his very soul. He wanted to look away from her chilling look, but he didn’t. Still looking deep into her chocolate eyes, he said so quietly, it was barely more than a whisper, “See, you’re totally worthy. You had a line of people to ask you to the ball. I was just to late.”
When she still didn’t say anything, Ron dropped his head in defeat. Slowly he got up and walked to the door. When he was about to open the door, Hermione finally spoke.
“Why do you hate Viktor so much?” she asked.
Ron turned back to face her. “I don’t know. He just puts off a bad vibe.”
“Is it because you are
jealous of him?” she said slowly getting to her feet.
“No.” he said, his voice cracking.
She looked at him long and hard again. This time he couldn’t stand the piercing look, so he looked away. When he peaked another glance at her, he saw a tear roll down her pretty face.
“Hermione, don’t cry. I didn’t mean-“
“No it’s ok. I’m not thinking about that anymore.” She said, brushing her hand over her face.
“What are you thinking about then?” he asked stepping closer to her.
“It’s just stupid. I’m getting upset over your insensitivity-“
“I said I was sorry!”
“Yes I know, Ronald. But…” She sank down onto her bed, more tears coming down.
Ron walked over and sat down next to her. “What is it?”
“A lot of things.” She mumbled.
“Talk to me.”
“Harry can die, Ron. And you and me are arguing over a stupid letter.” She finally said.
“Why what’s the matter with Harry?”
She rolled her eyes. “He needs to go up against the most powerful wizard in the world. Now that Dumbledore isn’t here anymore. What if he dies?” tears were free falling down her cheek now.
Ron wrapped his arms around her and brought her closer to him. She laid her head on his chest and sniffed. “Don’t worry. Harry is going to be all right. We are going to be there for him no matter what.” He said rubbing her back soothingly.
“But what if something happens to us?” she said looking up into his eyes. What he saw broke his heart. There was fear and sorrow in them. He wanted it to go away and see the happiness and intelligence return, but he didn’t know how.
“Nothing is going to happen to either of us. I promise.”
