The wind whipped around them as they ran back into Hogwarts. They’d enjoyed a nice walk that soon turned into a run. So much for a pleasant afternoon!

“What a wind!” Neville shuddered, grabbing Luna under the protective archway leading into the school. “Be careful, or you’ll get blown away!”

“Wouldn’t that be a wonderful experience? I wonder where I’d end up—maybe in Beijing. I heard they have a wizarding school there, too.” Luna sighed happily and arranged her windswept hair.

As they turned a corner to head to the Great Hall, he could still hear the wind’s roars.

It was Christmas time, and Neville couldn’t wait to give Luna her present. It was a beautifully bound book about ancient magic—she was sure to like it, as she was fond of the charms and such. He’d had it wrapped in the store and was very happy with this purchase.

Christmas Day came and they exchanged presents. Luna’s eyes lit up when she saw the cover. “Lovely! Dad bought me this last year, but it will be lovely to have a newer copy!”

Even though he had given her something she already had, he was glad she was pleased.

“Look into the orb; sense what you see, and write it down on the scented parchment,” Professor Trelawney instructed dreamily. “I expect everyone to see at least a bit of something.”

Neville stared hard into his orb, hoping that something would come to him. Nothing did. His mind started to slip from reality as he gazed into the mist. In his daydream, he could see Luna’s face in the ball, laughing hysterically like she did often. He chuckled to himself.

“Mr. Longbottom, what do you see?” Professor Trelawney inquired as she drifted past him.

“My dream fulfilled,” was his answer.

“Luna, if I die any of these days, tell my Gran that I never did find my remembrall,” Neville told the misty-eyed girl in the Room of Requirement.

Luna nodded solemnly. “I’ll tell her.”

Seventeen-year-old Neville smiled. “Thanks.”

A moment passed between them when both were silent, stealing glimpses at the other but not acting. Finally, Neville bent his head down towards Luna’s, who blinked confusedly and then smiled.

A loud bang erupted from the other side of the wall, making them jump. It turned out to be Colin Creevey, who was trying to enter.

If only they’d acted quicker.

“Do it! Do it!” the first years cried as Harry Potter mounted his broom to chase after Draco Malfoy.

“No! Please, Harry, it’s not safe!” Neville squealed. His remembrall wasn’t that important. He’d rather not have Harry lose Gryffindor more house points.

But the rest egged Harry and Draco on. Neville sat down and blubbered into his hands, hoping that someone would come into his life that would understand him and not mock him for it.

He would only have to wait till the following year—at that time someone who he thought he’d never get used to would arrive.

Luna stepped into the Gryffindor common room with awe. “What a lovely place!” she exclaimed, eyeing the cushy armchairs and roaring fire.

“The tables are this way,” Neville told her, guiding her to a far corner. She was here to help check over his homework, but he let her relish in the new experience of Gryffindor Tower.

When she was done marveling, she took up his parchment and her wand, pointing at many words, which changed slightly. “Your spelling is the main thing wrong here. You should use a dictionary.”

“Okay, I’ll ask you how to spell things next time.”

“Luna, don’t stand up on that!”

But she climbed nimbly up the statue and was soon balancing on its head. “Look at me, Neville! The view from here is fantastic.” She spread her arms and breathed in deeply.

Neville squirmed where he was on the ground. “I think you should get down before you fall.”

“Nonsense.” Luna lifted one foot and waved her arms slowly, beseeching the sky above her. “It’s too hard to fall badly.”

“You’re too daring for me,” Neville concluded with a shudder, smiling at her wavering form. He poised himself right under her, just in case.

“Oh, Winky, please stop crying,” Luna pleaded calmly, seeing the elf wring her hands and take the occasional sip of butterbeer. “Have something to eat at least.”

Beside her, Neville watched the house elf in worry. “She doesn’t look like she’s coping too well.” He, personally, had accompanied Luna mainly because of the food (and to be with Luna, of course).

Dobby sighed. “We’re hoping she’ll pull through, sir. Winky just needs time.” He clapped his hands and some house elves zoomed over to present an assortment of food.

“Thanks!” Neville grabbed some pasties, but Luna kept looking at Winky.

“It’ll make you feel better, honest!” Neville held the chocolate out to Luna, who shrugged and took it.

“I’m sorry that I’m not my usual self today,” Luna sighed, taking a bite of the chocolate. It was the anniversary of her mother’s death that day and her manner had been solemn the whole week.

Neville squeezed her hand. “No worries. I understand.” His mind flickered to his parents, who were in the hospital beyond sanity. He understood better than anyone else.

Smiling, Luna thanked him. She did feel better, but she wasn’t sure if it was the chocolate or Neville.

“I don’t know how we’re surviving in the Muggle community,” Neville whispered to Luna as they toured the streets of London. “We must be an odd sight indeed.”

“No, we look perfectly normal in these clothes,” Luna assured him, arranging her feathered hat.

Muggles stared at them wherever they went and Neville felt more foolish by the moment.

“Oi! It’s not Halloween yet,” one Muggle said, sniggering at Luna.

“We know, thanks,” she replied calmly, taking Neville’s arm. When the Muggle walked away, she admitted quietly, “Maybe we do look odd.” But she smiled widely and patted Neville’s fluorescent helmet.

She was here. She was at Hogwarts. And Professor Longbottom didn’t know what in the world to do. Should he try to ask her to go somewhere on a date? It was like fate had brought Luna to him.

In the years they’d spent separately, she’d become even more beautiful to him and the same air of carefree happiness lingered around her.

He slapped himself to break his thoughts of her. He had to ask her sometime. First, he had to grade these exams.

“Neville? Are you alright?” Professor Lovegood asked, peeking in after hearing a slap.

“Dandy,” he replied.

He couldn’t get the ridiculous image of Luna’s hat out of his mind. The raven kept squawking loudly over the din of the students.

Ginny tore towards the keeper’s ring with the quaffle in hand. A collective silence ensued, then--

“Gryffindor scores, leading by ten points!”

Neville cheered with the rest, pumping his fist in the air. Beside him, Luna frowned slightly, but tapped the raven to make it screech louder.

“You’re just jealous Gryffindor’s in the lead,” Neville accused jokingly.

She turned to him mildly. “You’re just jealous you’re hatless.” A flicker of a smile appeared on her face.

The Great Hall was crowded on Valentine’s Day and Neville had to talk to her before class started. He craned his neck over the students; he still wasn’t the tallest, though he was in seventh year.

She waved at him as he caught sight of her and drifted over to him. “Happy Valentine’s Day,” she said, reaching out and squeezing both his hands. Her brow furrowed slightly when she saw the large gash on his cheek. “You’re hurt.”

“What’s new?” Neville forced a smile.

“Let’s go somewhere else that’s not teeming with students, shall we?” Luna suggested, taking his hand.

“Good bye, Neville,” Luna whispered on platform nine and three quarters before he disappeared through the barrier.

“Bye.” He wanted to hug her very badly; thankfully, she obliged and wrapped her arms around him. “I’ll keep in touch this summer,” he assured her. He couldn’t imagine not writing to her.

Luna smiled. “That sounds splendid.” Unexpectedly she reached up and brushed her lips against his cheek, making his cheeks go aflame with pleasure and surprise.

He wished then that he had a penseive so he could reflect upon that moment, and all moments he shared with Luna, for that matter.

“Okay, class, step forward with your wand at the ready,” Professor Moody growled. His electric blue eye scanned the crowd of students. “Lovegood, you go first. Say it nice and loud.”

Luna floated to the front of the class and the boggart was released. It swooped towards her, showing her father lying in a puddle of blood. The class gasped and covered their eyes. She raised her wand bravely, but the figure changed…into Neville, blood trickling from his mouth.

The class emitted sounds of interest in her boggart.

It was her first year at Hogwarts School. Her large eyes roamed the Great Hall before she dug into her heaping plate of food, taking in the star-scattered ceiling, the long house tables, and the Ford Anglia flying past the window—the Ford Anglia flying past the window?

Luna blinked hard and looked again, but sure enough, a car was nose-diving to the ground. Maybe this was a special first-day-of-term amusement. She wasn’t the only one who’d noticed, though. A pudgy Gryffindor gaped at the car and when he saw her watching it in amazement as well, he grinned shyly.

His fingers stretched upward to the shelf where the thick dictionary lay—he was almost there, but he couldn’t reach it. He bit his lip and stood on his tiptoes, but couldn’t touch it.

“I’ll never get it at this rate,” Neville moaned to himself. He turned around tiredly.

“Here, let me help you.” A first year Ravenclaw student with radish earrings took out her wand and summoned the dictionary, then handed it to him.

Wow, I feel stupid. Neville blushed. Not only had he been outwitted by a girl, but he’d been outsmarted by a first year too! “Thanks.”

“Excuse me, could you tell me the way to the Defense Against Dark Arts classroom?” Luna asked politely. The first day of Hogwarts was definitely confusing and the school was so big!

The boy who’d smiled at her last evening nodded. “Just go down this staircase and turn into the right corridor. The Defence Against Dark Arts classroom is on the right.”

“Thank you.” Luna offered him a friendly smile. He was very nice.

Neville returned her smile. “You’re welcome.”

She waved vaguely and stuck her schedule into her book bag, then proceeded down the staircase to the first floor.

“Luna,” Neville started.

She slowly looked up from the book she was reading. “Yes?”

“I think I’m depressed.” He traced the scar on the side of his head thoughtfully. “Seventh year is just so hard and I don’t know how I can finish all this homework. Plus, those Carrows are so terribly unbearable.”

Luna patted his hand lightly. “You’re not depressed, just a bit worn out. We all are. What I do when I am sad is I think about all the things that have gone right that day. Ones you think about it, there are lots of happy things.”

“Don’t ever go near it,” Neville warned Luna as they strode past the Whomping Willow, which swayed in the breeze. “It’s the most vicious tree you will ever meet.”

Luna stopped at looked up at the thick branches. “Even worse than the Thwarting Thornthistle tree?”

He’d never heard of that tree before. He expected it was one of the crazy plants she thought existed. “Yes, even more than that,” Neville replied so he wouldn’t have to argue over its existence.

“The Thwarting Thornthistle doesn’t exist, silly,” Luna giggled.

Dang it. “I mean, I thought you meant the Thrashing Tuliper tree!”

Professor McGonagall strode by, eyeing Neville and Luna kindly through her spectacles. She placed a finger to her lips and followed the voices of the Carrows. When she walked down the hall and turned into a cat, Neville and Luna sucked in their breath.

“I wonder how much effort it takes to become an animagus?” Neville wondered aloud, watching the cat disappear around a corner.

“It takes a lot of work,” Luna answered. “If I were an animagus I would like to be a margle, which is distantly related to the nargle.”

Neville chuckled. “Me too.” Because you’d be one.

Neville and Luna loved sharing jokes. Their sense of humor was the same—unique and sort of cheesy. Jokes were sometimes the only things that kept them going, as Hogwarts wasn’t the same as it used to.

“Listen to this one that I made up by myself,” Neville chuckled, writing it down on his parchment with a spare quill (he finally bought some). “Knock knock.”

Luna leaned back in her chair and smiled. “Who’s there?”

“You know.”

“You know who?”

“Bahaha,” Neville laughed. “Get it? You-know-who.”

Luna let out a loud burst of laughter, rocking back and forth. “That’s funny!”

Neville often struggled with memorizing the dates for his History of Magic class, so Luna Lovegood was often seen aiding him the night before an exam.

“It’s impossible,” he declared, burying his head in his hands.

She patted his arm. “Don’t be silly. Copy down this timeline and enchant it so the categories are in different colors, and you’ll remember better. It is an old Ravenclaw trick.” She attempted to pry a hand from his face.

“I can’t…” was his muffled reply. He peeked through his fingers as she tapped each category for him and felt a rush of gratitude.

The night was eerie. Walking at midnight was even riskier business. But Neville had grown accustomed to doing things that were out of his comfort zone by now. Running a group of rebels under the Carrows’ noses was very stressful, a role h had taken with passion.

He and Luna walked silently together on the edge of the Forbidden Forest. Her silvery hair was shining like a light in the darkness and he never appreciated it as much as he did now.

A loud hoot from the forest made them jump. Luna grasped onto his hand.

She didn’t let go.

As they walked to the Quidditch Pitch for the match, Neville couldn’t help but ask about Luna’s raven hat.

“It’s merely a combination of spells I learned in Transfiguration and Charms,” Luna replied, patting her hat.

“Transfiguration? How did you use Transfiguration?” Neville was amazed at her talent and nearly tripped over a stone.

“I transfigured the roaring lion I used to have into a raven, of course.”

Neville paused to think. “Oh yes, I suppose that makes sense, Luna.”

It was Luna’s turn to stumble when she was adjusting her hat, but Neville held her arm to steady her.
