Here's my take on Ronald Weasley Ron: He's Harry's best friend. He can be lazy (in terms of school work and his prefect duties.) He can be callous as well (his statement about only wanting to take a good-looking girl to the Yule Ball) He is also determined and friendly to those he chooses to be.
The thing that is most common about Ron in HP fanfiction (and you can probably blame the movies for this,) is he's portrayed as a dim-witted, side-kick and smart aleck. While Ron has many humorous things to say, he's more than just comic relief. He's the one Harry cares about most (as seen in GoF) and he's most likely to be in the thick of things with Harry than sitting back in the common room making jokes.
When Ron is angry, it's because he feels inferior. When he's teased by Malfoy about his family, when he's reminded about how poor he is when receiving hand-me downs. We all know Ron is actually good at Quidditch when no one is around, but when he's in a game his nerves take over, probably because his brothers were great Quidditch players themselves.
Now that we've read HBP, his character has grown tremendously. Ron has never been the suavest Gryffindor and his ventures with girls reflect that. He was even taunted by his sister about having the experience of an 8 year old, thus thrusting him into an interesting relationship with Lavender Brown. He gained some experience and grew from that, he realized it was more than just kissing that made a relationship.
Basically, Ron lives in the present and fights the battles that come to him. He doesn't look ahead to the future when making decisions but learns as he goes. Write him with his background in mind. Youngest son, poor purebloods....that's where his personality stems from. Take it and run with it... |
