Default Office of Minister of Magic Sherman Clark
urine trouble | Pat's Strong Confident Other Half | Pees Like a Champion Unicorn Racehorse

Like the man himself, Sherman Clark’s decoration style is quite eccentric. The first thing one notices upon entering his office are the bright colors and plaid; from the walls to the furniture, each and every portion of the room bursts with liveliness. But, despite the almost overwhelming sight, everything is neat and orderly. The Minister’s desk is empty unless he is currently working on something, save for a candy basket for visitors as well as framed photographs of his wife and granddaughter. Wooden cabinets line the back wall just above his floral armchair, always polished to shininess. Comfy, extravagantly patterned seats, which carry a smell somewhat similar to that of the elderly, are present in the case of guests.

And, of course, his door is always open! Do come inside. Regardless of the actions of his family members, Minister Clark doesn’t bite.

OOC: Feel free to come play! Visitors are always welcome!

Lynley checked her watch. She told the minister she was coming 'round at about...2 o'clock, and it was 1:58 exactly. She hoped the man was prompt and on time, because nothing bothered the Transportation head more than.......

Lateness.

It was enough to get the formidable glare and a warning from the woman, and she didn't think she would hold back if the minister was later, either. Just because the man was higher up than her...technically, she supposed--she thought HE of all people should be on time.

And so, she knocked, softly, but raptly, and waited.

She met the man a few times. He was eccentric. Lynley was not a fan, but he made a good minister....thus far. How could she really complain? He hadn't mucked anything up quite yet. Quite an accomplishment.

Luckily for Lynley, there was no possible way that Sherman could have been late that day; he'd been working inside his office all morning. There were stacks of parchment covering his normally barren desk, and the elderly man had even skipped lunch to keep working on his tasks for the day.

He was ready for a nap.

Too bad that he had a meeting with the Transportation Head, huh? The woman was a little... frightening, to be honest, with the constant glare-y look she was giving and the 'DIE, PEASANT' aura that surrounded her sometimes. Sherman didn't exactly look forward to speaking with her.

Still, he rolled his wheelchair over to the door seconds after his wrinkly ears picked up on the soft knocking sound and greeted Lynley with a smile. "Hello, Ms. Purcell! How are you? Come in, please!" He scooted out of the way just so she could do that.

His office was a little too.... Sherman, as always, but it was still suitable for guests, of course.

Lynley looked down at Mr. Clark, since, you know, he was in a wheelchair and all. The man seemed to be cheerful today, but since when was he...not? "I'm all right today." She said simply before sweeping inside.

Her hair was tied back into a tight bun, and her fingers found the pearls that hung about her neck, stroking them slightly....the plaid. The plaid was a horribly rendered early 1990's nightmarish sight, and Lynley found herself wanting to...cast her own preferences all over the man's walls. Her hand even twitched to grab her wand.

But she refrained from doing so.

"I have a few things to discuss with you, sir," she casually said, tucking a stray, pesky strand of her hair behind her ear. "So I'm glad you're in a dapper mood." A smirk curled across her lips. "May I have a seat?" She would wait for him to tell her to, but Lynley was much too busy to worry about pleasantries right now.

Just... all right? Well.

"I'm glad to hear that, Ms. Purcell! And yes, please sit." Sherman would have offered her a drink— he thought João would be happy to run down to grab something from the cafeteria for her, seeing as the boy didn't often have much else to do— but Lynley didn't seem like the kind of person to care for courtesies or pleasantries, so he got down to business.

Of course, he first rolled over to one of the extravagantly patterned seats which carried a smell somewhat similar to that of the elderly, pulling it out for his guest. He was nothing if not a gentleman.

Now. Things to discuss. "I'm sure you do. About what would you like to confer with me?"

Lynley did sit, and she crossed her ankles in a ladylike manner and clacked her fingernails against the surface of his desk. The horrid chair she was forced to sit in smelled of elderly people. Reminded Lynley of her grandmother's house...Merlin. Was there an elderly person scent or something? They all smelled the same! Like a...muted baby powder mixed with potatoes or something. Lynley had to try hard not to crinkle her nose.

Merlin.

The minister didn't offer her any tea or refreshments, but that was okay. She herself often didn't offer her visitors anything because refreshments took extra time to prepare. Lynley was a busy woman. "Please, call me Lynley, sir." No need for formalities here. He was her boss.

And now, to business! "As you should know--" Ahem. "Magic carpets are now legal. I've been working on the exact legislation regarding that, within my department of course--but I came to ask you about anything YOU might want to contribute?" She cast her eyes around his office once before letting her gaze fall to him again. "Unless, of course--" she smirked, "You don't like magic carpets. Then your opinion doesn't really matter." Now does it?

Lynley chuckled...covering her mouth with her hand. Hehehehehehe.

The clacking was a little scary. Or a lot scary. The way Ms. Purcell's nails rapped against the surface of his desk made Sherman feel like she was anticipating the moment when she could do the very same thing to his poor old man flesh—

Ahem. "Lynley it is. Of course, I am aware of the carpet situation." It was his job to know what was happening in the Wizard World, was it not? Merlin knew a fat load of his work had to do with such things, but he didn't bother to say so. "To contribute... hm. I'd have to know what was in the legislation already, wouldn't I? Do you have a draft copy with you?"

He also thought whether he liked magic carpets or not was a moot point; irrelevant was his opinion, for his position as Minister surely implied that he should review any legislation for the safety and best interests of his citizens, correct?

Sherman didn't mention that either, though. Those nails needed to stay farther AWAY.

Lynley nodded curtly, becoming serious at once, and pulled out her binder. The regulations she had typed up on official paper were blinded in here. They were...so precious to her right now.

No one TOUCHED this notebook.

She pushed it towards Sherman Clark, and waited, clicking her tongue. "Inside are what my department have come up with thus far. We've worked very hard on these....I just want to know if you think I'm on the right track...if you'd approve of these...etc. You ARE the head honcho." As if he DIDN'T know or anything...hmph.

Zach has been very busy preparing some paperwork for the Minister. He had it signed off by the Senior Undersecretary and now he needs to deliver. He have, in his arms a couple of folders, both of which is of blue in color and have the Ministry's insignia on top. It doesn't say "Top Secret" but it is not for everyone's eyes to see.

He stood in front of the door of the Minister's office after saying a few words with the Senior Undersecretary. Clearing his throat, he knocked.

Smiling a bit at the words 'head honcho', Sherman took the binder and murmured a thanks as he began to look over it.

Eventually, the elderly man glanced back up. Commentary time? All right, then. "This looks wonderful, Lynley. I can tell you and your department have put a lot of effort into this piece of legislation." Her regulations looked quite polished, and it was always best to start with a compliment anyway.

"Have you decided how you will conduct the license test for magic carpets and what would constitute proficiency operating one? And have you considered differentiating between charmed Muggle carpets and legitimately manufactured magic carpets created specifically for flying in the statute? Perhaps that needs to be addressed." He knew very well that there was a general concern about appropriating Muggle items in problematic ways, and he didn't want Accidents and Catastrophes to be running around willy-nilly fixing carpet fiascoes.

Sometimes, Sherman was prone to skipping lunch to reach his objectives for his work hours, but it was a hollow day today. He'd started out with a sandwich, and when that wasn't enough, he'd asked João to fetch him some pasta, and then baked beans, and then fried bread, and then sausages... still not enough. When a new noise interrupted him, he was POSITIVE it was his stomach rumbling.

Actually, it was the door.

Cleaning off the crumpet crumbs coating his lips, he wheeled over to get the door. "Mr. McMillan! How are you? Come in, come in, please!"

Making her way to the Minister Office, Victoria kept her notebook in hand. She had made an appointment a week ago and now was exactly on time. Stopping at the receptionist she was asked to go back. She had only had small run ins with the Minister since he had taken office so a meeting was quite nice in Victoria's mind.

Stopping at his door she lifted her hand and knocked. No need to barge in even if it was the scheduled time. She would wait until called. Her excitement was certainly there along with her nerves to bring up the idea she had been working out since her own campaign had started.

He had been ready— calendars were so handy, they were— for Victoria's meeting. Sherman wheeled over to the door at once, swinging it open and greeting the woman with a smile. "Mrs. Culloden! How nice to see you! Come in and sit, won't you?"

The paperwork that had been on his desk moments before was nowhere to be seen, and the office looked virtually spotless.

The Minister was prepared for whatever this encounter would entail.

"Hello Minister, please it's Victoria." She loved her last name, but it was so formal and she was never one for that formal. She felt it was just nicer to be on a first name basis, at least when you were just a quidditch manager. "I hope I'm not taking you away from important matters, but thank you for seeing me." Looking into the office she was very reassured to see it so clean. Not that she didn't expect it to be any different she just knew how she kept her own office.

Finding a seat she watched the man for a moment. "I hope you are doing well." Not to be too prying into his personal life, but it was always polite to ask. "I've been working on a few things for the latest Quidditch season coming up and it made me think of something that I had left sit on my desk for sometime." She pulled out her notebook she had kept all this time. "During my campaign I had went around to all the departments asking them questions, asking the employees questions, and even in Diagon Alley, this notebook has all that in it. I had always said I would give it to the minister if I hadn't made it and it just slipped my mind with the pregnancy and birth of my child shortly after the election took place."

Opening it up to a certain page she had set it on the desk. "There was a specific idea that I have been thinking on and off about that I feel very strongly for. I hope you wouldn't mind letting me discuss it for a few minutes with you."

Victoria, it was. Sherman wheeled around to the other side of his desk again, observing her. "Of course not. In fact, this is an important matter, I'm sure." Anything his employees wished to discuss with him was always a priority in the Minister's eyes.

Ah, was she? Shame it had slipped her mind; he was sure she had some great information in that book of hers. But apparently she was going to share some of it now. And speaking of that campaign... "Are you planning on running in the next election?" He wouldn't be vying for the position again. In his near three years in office, Sherman had achieved everything he'd hoped to— it was time for someone new to take the chair soon.

"Talk away, Victoria." He was all ears.

"Talk away, Victoria." He was all ears.

She gave him a smile as he said what she had to say was encouraging. That was very sweet and it made her feel good. It was nice to have a minster make time for his employees, yes that was all she had opened for when the elections went on.

Speaking of election, "Oh, I'm not sure really. It took a lot out of myself and my family." She remembered her sons little episode that landed him in the Quibbler. At least he had grown up since then. "It's something I'd really have to think about." She wasn't going to fully throw the thought out, but she remembered how embarrassed she felt as well.

That was another topic though and not what she had come for. "We have a pretty big turnover rate and with a great ministry like we have, it has always made me wonder why so many people tend to leave so quickly. Many are younger employees. It got me thinking of entry level programs, which many departments already have, but also some educational training to go along with that. Help them get on their feet faster in the workplace." She pointed in the notebook where she had it, "I was thinking of more job fairs for teenagers. Let them know exactly what is out there and what they need to prepare themselves a little more. Maybe even some work study programs where they would do school and a part time position here to learn more and see if this is really for them before they jump into the full time position." She hoped her words weren't sounded ridiculous she really felt passionate about this idea.

That made sense. While his granddaughter and wife were very supportive of his career and aspirations, the job took a heavy toll on his family as well as him, be it for protection or publicity purposes. Running again was a huge decision to make, and Sherman could definitely understand Victoria having to think about it. After all, he had decided to take a step back, too. He nodded.

"Ah, yes. Longevity in the Ministry was an issue when I stepped into office." It was actually something he'd touched on in many of his campaign speeches. He'd succeeded in making plenty of small changes to fix it after taking the position of Minister, from adjustments such as a small but doable bonus pay plan achieved by simple budgeting to more benefits for long-time employees.

"Those are great ideas. More seminars could be easily arranged with Hogwarts; when I was an employee in the Department of Mysteries, I presented at the school. There was a higher influx of younger employees in our department the following year, if I remember correctly." Sherman glanced at the notebook again. "Entry-Level positions sound good. I'm sure we could also work out a summer internship program for students and things like that to provide them with more opportunities for work education and hands-on experience." The details would need much fine-tuning and thought, of course, but he was sure it could be done.

She sat quietly while she listened to what he had to say about the ministry. Yes, she felt it was everyone's concern that had been running. In her own department it had been an issue. She couldn't believe the amount she had to train over the years. It was utterly exhausting finding good help. "Yes, I'm glad to see that you have made some nice changes. It is a wonderful thing to try to keep our good employees and keep them happy." She loved the ministry and wanted the best for it always.

"I think seminars would be great. I could always help you set things up if this would go on." She knew he had a full department to do that stuff, but she wasn't one to just leave ideas and hope someone did the hard work. She was willing to work to have them succeed. "I would like to get a more open communication with Hogwarts about quidditch as well. Our efforts to reach out the last few years seem to have gone no where." It still had put so much stress on them to find the talent with no school league. Such talent sitting not being used during school, it was a shame.

"Yes, I think internships would be wonderful It would really give teenagers a view of what goes on to know if they really want to do a job or not. In the long run I do believe they could help keep employees longer and have more expectation when starting then they have in the past. Also, opportunities to continue education and training once in the ministry might be another bonus for working hard here and staying longer." If they were willing to put their money into their employees maybe the employees would work harder for them in the end.

"Thank you." Sherman smiled, pleased by the woman's words. While he didn't much require recognition or praise, it was nice to know firsthand the changes he'd made were actually affecting employees positively. After all, he put a lot of effort into his job.

Help him set things up? "Of course, but I assume this project may take a while to sort out? I won't be in office for much longer." The end of his third and final term as Minister was approaching, so it wasn't likely he'd be there to see this through. "Perhaps you and I could draw out some plans and propose them to the next Minister as well?" It was a complicated time, and Sherman wouldn't want to hinder the following Minister's goals. Best not to step on any toes, no?

"Quidditch..." Yes, he'd heard a lot about that, given... well, Alice and whatnot. "I'm afraid that really isn't my area of expertise." The school was not something he held that much power over, as most of the public had made it clear they didn't favor Ministry involvement unless necessary, and there were laws restricting some actions that he could take there. That was probably something she'd be better off discussing with her own head and the Headmistress herself.

"I agree completely!" They'd have to be careful, as giving young people access to government positions could sometimes be difficult. But in the long run, it would be great for the Ministry, Sherman thought.

She smiled back at him, it was truly hard to not like the man. He was sweet and kind, plus he at least acted as if he cared about what she had to say. She assumed he did care, but she knew some had a way with words, but his actions had showed he did at least a little.

Yes she would agree it was going to take sometime and to think that someone else might come in and just tell her no, this was something she would have to think about. She bit her lip thinking about the directions this could go and the thought of running again couldn't help but creep into her mind. Though could she really do that again? It was so embarrassing to loose and just go back to her position afterwards. She wasn't sure her confidence or pride could handle that again. It would be something she would have to speak about to her closest people and figure out how she truly felt, "I think a plan and speaking to the new minister when the time comes will work just fine, but seeing how far we get it first would be the first step in a good direction."

Yes, she knew the man wasn't able to do things with the school, it sometimes seemed that the school had a bit too much power alone. "Speaking of the school, how much say does the Board of Governors have when it comes to issues there?" She was just curious and she assumed a new election there would be coming at some point. She didn't remember how long people held those positions, but she couldn't remember the last time there had been one. Maybe she had still been in Australia during and if that was the case it was well over 9 years.

She couldn't help but smile, she enjoyed when someone agreed with her completely on things. Especially thing that she had thought long and hard about.

"I think so, too. I'm sure whoever enters office next will think it's a swell idea as well." As for her next question...

"The Board has quite a bit of power, although the full extent of our authority is usually kept under wraps. what's commonly known is that we appoint the headmaster or headmistress, take action if parents want to resolve any school-related issues, and can shut down the school entirely if we feel it is necessary." It was quite handy, being on the Board as Minister, for it was nice to have a little insight and input even if the school was out of his jurisdiction. Quidditch hadn't been a problem they'd seen fit to intervene with just yet.

"Yes, I truly hope they do. These are good ideas if I do say so myself and I would love to see some of the ones we've talked about go through." Maybe this meeting wasn't such a good idea after all. It was good, because it went great and Sherman was wonderful. He liked her ideas, they were planning, she should be thrilled, BUT it just made a spark light in her again. A want to make a difference, to do more. No, she told herself she wouldn't do that again.

Ugh

As for the board stuff she couldn't help but be a little concerned, "Well no offence Minister but there were a few times that the board should have fired the headmistress with things that had went on there." She was still annoyed, bitter even, that her son almost died of old age and that her husband was in such danger so many times. He could have been killed a few times! A troll and spiders, it was just too much. "I know you all know how to do your jobs and I'm not trying to say you aren't, I will just say I'm just glad I no longer have children there nor my husband working there." Though they hadn't been in the paper in awhile, so hopefully it had gotten better.

Shutting her notebook she smiled at him again, "I think we've covered everything. Thank you so much for meeting with me. Hopefully we can gather our thoughts again soon to put some of this into more of a plan." He probably had other meetings and other more important people to see. She didn't want to keep him too much longer.

"I would as well!" Victoria was a clever lady, he could tell, with a potential to make a big difference in the Ministry and the Wizarding World. Sherman always enjoyed the bouncing of ideas and exchange of intellectual conversation with those sorts of people.

... as for her comments on the Board.......... it really wasn't his place to agree, disagree, or give out any information that the Governors had discussed. The Minister did not even nod, for he certainly wouldn't want to affirm anything offensive about Headmistress Truebridge, to whom she was likely referring. Perhaps it was best to just let that one slide?

"Please. I look forward to it!" She could pencil herself in on his calendar any time at all.
