Well, at least you didn't burn your dinner!!! Or did you!!!! (Burns hurt period! I had to help airlift a burn patient to the hospital once - not pleasant! He was in severe pain and you could smell the burnt flesh!) | |

Yes, unfortunately it is very true! And a great lesson as to why one should never use gasoline to help burn brush piles! He was burned on his legs, chest neck, back and arms. I do miss riding in the medical helicopters though! I loved taking emergency care of people! I had to quit as an EMT because of problems with my right hand that won't allow me to safely lift gurneys anymore. I never dropped a patient, but I won't take that chance either now. On an ambulance, there are often just two EMT's and they often have to lift a person weighing close to 200 pounds and sometimes over 300 pounds!

Anyone can do it if they like emergency medicine enough to take the training. I did my education hours volunteering on the area medical helicopters. Usually they are staffed with flight nurses, which are RN's with flight training and don't use EMT's. My job was in the ambulance, driving or riding depending on who got their first, or whose turn it was to drive. One drove and one stayed in back with the patient. | |

Without divulging my antiquity, let me just say I am older than 25. I broke my hand several years ago and it has never really been the same since surgery was needed to correct miss-healing due to an inept doctor that thought it would heal on it's own without a cast! Otherwise I would still be doing it, I love it that much!!!!! They call us adrenalin junkies because even my dog was trained to my beeper that alerted us to a call. He immediately went to his kennel. I was also a firefighter as well, so speed in getting to the station was paramount. My dog seemed to know that, and all I had to do was shut the door and go. LOL! Anyone who is over 18 can qualify for either or both positions. EMT's do have to attend college classes, of course and firefighters attend special classes and practice a lot!
