It takes decades to understand our parents, and unfortunately, once we do, they are often gone! My dad and I were like you and your mom. We just couldn't seem to understand each other at all, and although it got better, it was only shortly before he died that he actually spoke the words I never heard from him - that he loved me. I will cherish that forever. Parents, first and foremost, are human. We tend to forget that and don't put them on the same level as others we know. As a mother, I know that I want better for my daughter than what I had. Your mom knows how hard a career in music can be and sees the dangers that lie in that professional field. Look at Brittany Spears. Now, I don't know what you would like to do as a musician...band, fame, riches are rare in that field and you have to understand that if you are going to try to succeed in it. Then there's the alcohol and drug stigma that professional musicians seemed to be plagued with. Your mom sees this and it scares the bejesus out of her, I bet. Now, what are your plans for a back up? Musicians can have successful careers in teaching, for example, or content themselves with playing for local orchestras and even better known ones if they are good enough. Either way, you need a strong backup. A strong college education in music would help. You can choose music as a major or a minor and use your backup as the other. Show her that you are knowledgeable and sincere, and her position may change. But, it could be she'll never get past her belief that music is just not good enough, and then you will have to help her come to terms with that by showing her you can do it using those plans I mentioned earlier. Then, if you succeed and still she doesn't accept it, it's her problem! Don't make it yours! Get what I am saying? Respect her opinion, but stick to your guns! But do it the right way!

*clings to you* That's true. I guess I could choose a second career as a back-up. I'm not really in it for fame or fortune... And I certainly don't want to end up like Brittany Spears... I just really love to play music. It's my passion. I think it's probably true that she's just scared, but I really don't think that my brother's preferred career of conquering the stock-market is any less far-fetched... I guess you are right in the drugs and alcohol, but the fact is that I'm such a stickler for health that I don't even take pain-killers like Tylenol to get rid of headaches... And I got really freaked out when I was so sick that I took a NyQuill... I've never taken any others like that since. I'm even a vegetarian.

I really hope that I learn to get along with my Mom before she dies... She does tell me that she loves me, often actually. It's thankfully not that she doesn't love me, it's just that she is so strict. She makes me do schoolwork almost all day, then complains when I don't get all of my house chores done. Plus, my brother plays a game called Magic cards... Its a trading-card-game that you play with. She makes sure that she goes out of her way to get off work early to take him to the game store every Friday so he can play, yet she doesn't make the extra effort to take me to volunteer as an usher at the Shakespeare theater... It's little things like that that elevate into long silences and/or fighting between us. [/pathetic complaining]

I don't know why it is that parents tend to treat their sons differently than their daughters, but the simple fact is that the boys get cut more slack a lot. Perhaps it is because they don't expect as much from their sons because "boy's will be boys" and girls have to make it in a man's world so they have to be pushed harder to succeed. I pity your brother in a way. The stock market is as cut-throat as the music business, and it can destroy one just as easily as the music business can....it is so fast paced and unrelyable that one can make a fortune in one day then lose it all the next. Many stockbrokers do cocaine to help them keep up with the pace of it all - just like a successful music career can! I wonder if your mom sees this correlation at all! The main difference between the two is that one is "blue collar" and one is "white collar" meaning basically that one wears a suit while the other doesn't (Like a banker vs a factory worker). It is a difference in "class". But, one must ask themselves if the dangers involved in either career care what "collar" one is wearing? Nope! It is the character of the person doing the job that makes the only difference and will determine their success or failure! It sounds to me like you have pretty good strength of character and would be unlikely to fall into those traps whatever you chose to do!

That's crazy! I sometimes hate this new machine! It won't let me do what I want to do which is simply cut and paste a cute photo!!!!!! The photo comes up for me whem I first cut and paste it, then when I send it it switches! All I have to do is hit on it and it opens right up into the picture again!!!! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR RRRR! I am going to try one more thing!

You have no idea!!!!!! It was great thanks to all of you! It was a bit of a bummer that my kids forgot all about it though! (Scratch half of that, I just noticed my youngest did call back Saturday! I had a message on my cell phone so I checked and it was my youngest calling to wish me a happy birthday. I musta been in the tub at the time! Why it just showed up today I have no idea!!!!) I can understand a bit where my youngest daughter is concerned because she has a lot to deal with right now and it is pretty serious, but my oldest, right down stairs, she and I spoke on the phone numerous times and she must have just plain forgot. (Maybe I'll forgets hers next December! LOL!) But with all everyone here at SS and this site did, made me feel like a young kid having a party, and that was priceless!!! Could be a bit better today, though though. I had to go out to run some errands and the powers that be led me to drive up to my parents old house. But then I met the new owner who showed me around to see the changes they have made and I know my parents would be pleased! That makes me feel a bit better, cause what they are doing definately makes the house look so much better! (Not that it looked bad before, but Dad was simply too busy with mom and too old to do a lot! Carpet was getting worn and they replaced it with beautiful wood for example!
