Discussion #7: Mundungus Fletcher

The Mundungus we know is a very dodgy person who involves himself in many different forms of crime and smuggling. He is a funny character, and all the kids love him because if all the amazing stories he has to offer from varioius, I'm sure, sketchy dealings.

So the question is, How did Mungungus get to be the way he is currently? What house was he in at Hogwarts, if he even went at all... And we know the Order of the Phoenix wanted him for his connection with Dark Wizards through the underground market. But how on earth did he even come in contact with The Order, and why did it interested him? He was a smart guy who could wriggle his way out of most sticky situations, and is an important character in the books who isn't recognized nearly as much as he should be.

How did he know about the Order? I think he knew about the Order because someone was blackmailing him. Maybe he wanted to be good but someone from the darkside threatened him and to keep it together he kept his word, or showed them that he could. Or maybe he was afraid of both Dumbledore and Voldemort but knew that Dumbledore would be a little more lenient and spare him his life.

As far as what House he was in, I say Hufflepuff. I think he was one of those that he could swing any way so there was not a particular House he truly belonged too because he had them all in him. You know...like a Huffie! We Huffies truly have traits that belong in each House so they have to put us in the a special House that only those with such traits belong in.

Hey Stacey! I think you bring up a very interesting point there about Huffies, one that I never considered before but makes a lot of sense. My first thought would have been that he would have been a Slytherin, but after reading what you said, I've changed my mind, Mundungus was definitely a Hufflepuff! He also had the ability to interact with a lot of people and was quite a funny, sociable guy, I think of all of those as excellent Hufflepuff traits. And I agree, he knew members of the Order through his many dealings with people of all types, both good and bad (though I'm still not convinced that he was all that much on the good side, after what happened in DH!) In a way, though, I almost think he's like another Horace Slughorn, concerned about protecting himself above anyone else, and that might make him a Slytherin. I don't see him as being either a Gryffindor or Ravenclaw.

Anyway, Mundungus... Shifty character, eh? Can I vote for Slytherpuff? Okay well seriously, I could actually maybe see him as a Ravenclaw only because believe it or not, he was a very intelligent wizard. Not that a Hufflepuff couldn't be intelligent, but a Claw would mean that intelligence was his main strength (i think)... Which I don't think is the case for Mundungus. Mundungus was probably mostly stealth, but through everything, he was loyal - as Linda said - to himself... He was about self-preservation, which in some regards, makes him fit more into Slytherin.

Enough about the house debate though ... How did he get to be how he is? That's easy... through his environment and himself, mostly... Environment and society are a big part of who an individual is and who they will become.
