Default Trafalgar Square

Exiting the subway station for Charing Cross instantly takes you to Trafalgar Square, which is at the south of Charing Cross Road and extends to a number of other streets. The square has been a significant landmark since the 13th century. The bulk of the square is taken up by Nelson's Column, surrounded by four bronze lion statues, and two large fountains featuring dolphins, mermaids, and tritons. In the corners of the square are four plinths, one of which is swapped out for another from time to time, and up a flight of stairs is the National Gallery.

A number of Muggle ceremonies are hosted here during major holidays, such as a seasonal tree ceremony prior to Christmas and a New Years celebration. The space is also occasionally used for political demonstrations, premieres, parade destinations, and more. This area is still primarily used today as a public gathering spot. With that being said, wizards and witches that find themselves here will know better than to whip their wands out.

Heading directly south of the square on Whitehall Road, the Ministry entrances can be accessed.

There was an odd stirring in the square. For the average person, perhaps they imagined it was the wind stirring up the few fallen leaves and trash in the square. Any birds in the square had departed hastily a few hours ago and had not returned.

For any who have been touched by death, you might see black, skeletal, bat-winged horses. Grouped to the right, the group of thestrals gave off a more…tamed feeling, although they looked a bit haggard, as if they were used to being taken care of by someone, perhaps the Hogwarts staff? Another, more tempestuous, group lingered off to the left. This group looked more wild, but fine as if they were used to taking care of themselves.

In between, prancing around between the muggles that were lingering in the square, the foals of each herd chased each other playing happily together.

Tommy had decided to go for lunch today. The square usually had the best hot dog stands and so he made his way there figuring he could snag a sausage and then sit on the steps and enjoy some rare London sun. Besides, he wasn’t in a hurry to go back to his desk job.

Whistling, he walked up to a food cart and paid his lunch, putting copious amounts of mustard on his dog, and then wandered over to the fountain to sit down and enjoy his lunch. Setting his dog down on his lap, he popped the top on his pop and took a swig. Hmmm…bubbles.

The whistling noise from one hyoo-mon got the attention of one of the frolicking colts. So did the delicious smell that the hyoo-mon was carrying. He cantered up and then followed the noisy man, although the hyoo-mon didn’t seem to notice him. It was fine. The colt was used to going about his business unseen by silly hyoo-mons.

He leaned in, sniffing trying to figure out what the hyoo-mon was doing. He jolted back a step at the odd hissing-pop sound of the man’s drink. He snorted, wings flapping a little.

Ooo – look….the hyoo-mon's yummy smelling treat was unattended in the man’s lap.

He leaned in and picked up the hot dog before turning to go. Maybe one of his new friends would like to share the treaty-meaty thing.

His hot dog was floating…

HIS HOTDOG WAS FLOATING!!!!!

Tommy spat out a mouthful of pop. Why was his hotdog floating? And WHY was half of it missing? He sat there, soda dripping down his face, as he watched the hotdog bounce in mid-air.

Before he could process things and reach out for it, the hotdog floated off. ”Hey!” he yelled after the hotdog. ”Come back here!” he jumped to his feet and reached out for it and managed to snag the end of the dog with his fingers.

Ohhh so the hyoo-mon wanted to play? Great!

Whickering and fluffing his wings, the colt tugged back as if playing a game of tug-of-war with the meaty treat in his mouth. His hoofs click-clacked on the stone ground below him.

Only, it appeared that whatever was in his mouth wasn’t designed to play tug-of-war. After a second or two of tugging, the thing split in half. The colt faulted, then stumbled back a few paces before gobbling up his part of the prize that was in his mouth.

He then snuffled and nosed around on the ground for the other half. He had won right? Well, then he deserved the entire meaty treat!

Wind blew in his face and Tommy swore he heard horse noises. What was going on here?!

”Gimme---“ There was a tug on the hotdog from the other invisible end as if something was pulling on it. He was not giving up his hotdog without a fight! Tommy felt his feet sliding forward on the stones and then the sausage ripped in two and Tommy felt himself falling backwards.

SPLASH!

And he landed in the fountain.

Little Emma had been watching the floating hotdog and the man with big brown eyes.
”Mamma……mamma….mamma….” she had been calling tugging on her mom’s sleeve. Her mom of course ignored her. ”Mamma….that man’s hotdog is floating…” Sleeve tug …

It wasn’t until the big splash in the fountain that her mother paid Little Emma any heed. Her mom took Little Emma by the hand and pulled her along to check on the man. ”Are you alright?” Mamma asked the man in the fountain.

Emma, meanwhile was trying to figure out what happened to the floating hotdog...

~~*~~

Across the square, having just left Charing Cross Road, Mr. Oppsokopolis, III, entered the square and stopped dead in his tracks. What in tarnation was going on?

The square was filled with big black, bat-winged Skelton horses. This was going a little far with the Halloween decorations wasn’t it?

He walked up to one and gave it a poke.

The colt whinnied happily as it found the other half of the hotdog and snuffled it up. His head bounced around as he chomped it. Once gone, the colt sniffed and leaned in towards the little hyoo-mon to see if she had anything else for him to try. He was rather hungry and there were no birds in this stone meadow for him to chase and eat.

Meanwhile, across the square Mr. Oppsokopolis had poked the wrong bear. Or in this case, Thestral. The old stallion was not in the mood. He was hungry, this stone meadow was uncomfortable under his hoofs and he had been scared out of his home. All he really wanted to do was be left alone. With a loud bray that echoed off stone buildings, the stallion flicked his tail in the muggle's face, his wings flapped threateningly, and he nickered at him in warning before side-stepping into the muggle with a loud thunk-clunk of his hooves.

The stallion's reaction set off a chain-reaction with the rest of the herd. Loud neighs could be heard. Wings flapped. Hooves click-clacked on flagstones. A sudden restlessness rippled through the group.

Sputtering and splashing around in the fountain, Tommy’s eyes landed on the lady and the little girl. ”My hotdog!” It was all he could think of to say.

”Hotdog?” the lady asked as Emma who had found the hotdog, watched it bounce around in the air. ”His hotdog was floating mamma!” A big giggle escaped her as something tickled her face and her hair bounced around her face.

”Floating?” the lady replied. ”What silly imaginations kids have these days.” She offered a hand to the man in the fountain.

Tommy took the proffered hand and allowed the woman to help him to his feet. If the little girl had seen the hotdog floating, well, then Tommy himself felt a little better about the entire encounter. Still…he was going to take the rest of the day off work.

Mr. Oppsokopolis was knocked back a few feet as the Halloween decoration moved… MOVED! into him. ”HEY!” he yelled out as he stumbled back a few feet, somehow managing not to fall over. ”What the tarnation is going on here?!” Whoever set up these skeleton horses really went above and beyond…maybe it was some stunt for a movie or TV? He looked around and the edged back closer to the horse thing, reaching out a hand to try and touch it again.

Clearly the human didn’t understand that the old stallion just wanted to be left in peace. They had been driven from their home and hadn't been able to find a comfortable place to resettle.

As the human reached out, the stallion neighed threateningly. He stomped his hooves, coming precariously close to stepping on the human's foot, and then turned. It was time to leave this place. Clearly there was no food and the humans weren’t going to leave them be. This would not be their new home. He whickered at the herd and then began flapping his wings.

The herd followed suit, flapping their wings and snorted nervously. When the old stallion took off into the air, the rest of the herd followed suit.

Soon the square was empty of thestrals.

Airey Flamsteed tended to reserve Thursdays for his day to eat outside of the Ministry for a bit of fresh air as was required for all those employed in the Department of Mysteries. It was a level saturated in experimental magic and dangerous magical components and it was quite literally bad for the health of witches and wizards to be near it for uninterrupted periods of time.

Something he felt more and more these days...what with everything going on and them being no closer to sorting out just WHAT was going on.

He had ensured that all enchantments had been reinstated and several of his own personal making and with a certain safety on some very...very specific artifacts housed in the Chamber of Codes. The unsettling feeling of constantly being watched had not left him either...but not even foe glass seemed to reveal anything and thus this feeling of paranoia had also settled into his cranium. At least...in addition to the usual paranoia.

He had ceased wearing red these days as well. No tempting the script.

Settling down on to a bench off to the side and with his vintage Star Trek lunch box on his lap (the contents of which had been lovingly made by Medea with the addition of a few ... surprises from the twins inside as well), the department head sighed and tucked into his chicken tuna sandwiches and uncharacteristically slouched his shoulders.

The man was tired.

Of all the Wizards Simone had to follow this one had been the most interesting and she wasn't surprised that he had picked the square to have his lunch. Following him since he had left the ministry she glanced around at the amount of people out at the moment. January was easy, no one was there and she had stopped right near an alley that Simone could have easily taken her in if she needed, but here, this was out in the open. She'd have to be quick and would have to be careful.

Taking her time she walked closer to the man when a thought crossed her mind and she went towards the bench. As she approached she let her hand slip from her robes to her side and straight into his lunch box spilling it off his lap and onto the ground.

"Oh dear me, I am so sorry."

It all happened in slow motion. His sandwich and apple slices following the momentum of the knock and up into the air, the CLINK of his tin vintage lunch box as it struck his sundial wristwatch in his attempt to catch it, a bit of mayonnaise and leaf of lettuce falling on to his thigh AND ON HIS SUIT...it was truly a scene from a horror movie and one Airey Flamsteed could not look away from it...while also did not know WHICH to rubberneck about more - his ruined pant leg or his poor now slightly dented lunch box.

"Aba...abababa...abababababa...noooooooooooooooo!" he mourned in a low wail as he flung the mayonnaise covered piece of lettuce aside (and towards the woman entirely on accident) before bending down to scoop up his lunch box and cradle it in his arms.

He could fix this...it was just a small dent.

Knowing he'd be dramatic Simone took a chance that he would bend to grab the food or the lunch box. As she was scooped down she kept apologizing and instead of picking up the pieces she pulled out her wand. "It's okay, I can take care of this and fix your lunch box." She was being the sweetest citizen and lifted her wand, but instead of cleaning up the mess she turned slightly more toward the man and whispered

"Stupefy"

Without missing a beat she reached for the man and apparated them both away. It was like Airey and the lunchbox had never sat down to lunch after all.

After fighting off an owl that had seemed interested in the baguette Valentin had in his bag, he and Alba had finally exited the Ministry. But rather than head to St. James Park, which was likely where Alba thought they were headed, Valentin led them into Trafalgar Square. It was noisy and busy and they would likely be ignored amidst the people. And so, if she wanted to ask him again about work, this time he could answer her with more than one-word answers.

Finding a place to sit on the fountain’s edge, Valentin set the picnic bag down on the stone and unbuttoned his suit coat before he sat down. ”Ai was not sure if you liked red or white,” he said digging into the picnic bag. He pulled a bottle of wine out to show her what he meant. ”And ai 'ope you lik dark chocolat.” Because he had brought back one of his favorite desserts: a blueberry chocolate tart.

Alba had been slightly confused when they hadn't gone straight to the park, she was worried Vale was changing his mind about sharing a picnic with her, but the location had just changed. Her heart rate began to settle again. " I don't know if I've ever sat in the square before." It was always fun to experience new things, and Vale was good at being part of those.

"I'm fine with either red or white, but I prefer white." There it was true, maybe that didn't make her a real wine drinker, who knows. "So what was all those one word answer about?" There no sense in beating around the bush, she wanted real answers, and no his push her away answers. They had broken through this barrier before, and Alba was not afraid to push him a little now that they are in a more 'private' locations.

”Ze square eez a great place to people watch,” he was busying using a corkscrew to open the bottle of white. Had they been alone, he’d simply had used a charm to open the bottle, but alas there were too many non-magics around. He preferred red wine himself, but didn't have a problem with whites. This one, a white Bordeaux, was fresh and a bit on the sweater side. It would go well with the cheeses and strawberries he had brought for them to nibble on. After producing a glass from the picnic bag, he poured Alba a glass and handed it over to her. Normally he would have waited for her to try it before pouring himself a glass, but he really needed a drink.

So pouring himself a glass, he answered her question. ”Too many ears around befair.” Sure, there were lots of people around the fountain, but it was less likely to be overheard here than in the Ministry. Also she worked in the Minister's Office area. To be overheard discussing international politics in the Minister's office with someone other than the DIMC Head, Undersecretary or the Minster? Yeah, that wouldn't go well for him. If Alba was going to spend time with him, she’d need to learn a few non-magical tricks for not being overheard without magic. It was funny, if you thought about it. He knew she had after all, spent a lot of time in the muggle world. ”Thengs at 'omé 'ave been tense and aye am not sure 'ow much la Ministère des Affaires Magiques de la France wants the information getting oot.” AKA he was telling her this information and she needed to keep it to herself. He didn't feel the need to voice that however. If he didn't trust Alba, he wouldn't be here sharing a bottle of wine.

He took a sip of wine as he looked out over the square. He was quiet for a moment. ”Parts of Notre-Dame, the Arc de Triomphe, even the Pyramide du Louvre ‘ave been defaced with non-magiques graffiti.” To deface those highly visual and heavily visited landmarks were bad enough, but to add the hate movement behind it was worse.

Alba took a sip of her wine. It was delicious! "You Sir, have very find taste." Alba added taking an additional sip. She could have drained the glass really, but thought it was best not to over indulge, she did after all have to work again tomorrow.

Alba smiled, good, she figured it was because they were inside the ministry before as to his answers and she was happy to see that, that truly was the reason and not that Vale didn't trust her or want to share information with her. "This may sound silly, but are you sure it's wizards doing the graffiti? Any chance it could be muggles?" Alba was trying to remember if he had said anything that seemed out of the realm of what muggles were capable of without magic, but honestly she couldn't.

"Your secrets are safe with me." Alba added, knowing that she didn't have to say it out loud either, but she would never betray Valentin's trust list that, never. It had taken her far to long to earn friendships around here.

Valentin toasted Alba with his own glass at the compliment regarding his taste in wine. ”It’s un of mon pairsonal wines.” And he didn’t share those with many people. In fact, this particular wine was one of Michael’s favorites. Valentin hadn’t opened one of them in a long time. The fact that he had even opted to bring a bottle to share/give to Alba, said something about how much he meant to her.

”Considaireng what was written? Oui, we aré préttay certain it’s wizards.” Valentin busied himself by pulling the container of cheese and fruit out of the picnic bag. He pulled the cover off the tupperware and then held it out to her. The cheese was cut into small squares, easy to eat in one bite and should pair well with either of the bottles of wine he had brought along. A dire thought occurred to him as he ate a piece himself. ” Unléz eet eez muggles cursed to do zo.” The thought that someone might be using the Imperius Curse made Valentin shudder a little.

He had already known she wouldn’t got blabbing to anyone about their conversations, but hearing it aloud was reassuring. In fact it led him to ask another question. ”En yur dealings at lé mineestry, 'ave you evair run into Conley Phora?” Sure it was a complete change of topic, but Alba was the only person she could ask. ”Or le Ambassadair to India?”

It was getting colder, not Genny's favourite season but she grew to learn how to enjoy it, particularly with a tall handsome man on her arm to cuddle. Although she wasn't cuddling Sam right now, it wasn't like her to be too clingy when she was upset. SUPER upset, actually, because they'd lost the most recent Quidditch match to the Wigtown Wanderers. Genny's arms were crossed to keep her warm partly and to accentuate how upset she was about the result. It was physically painful to lose when you've received so many bludgers to the side in order to save your teammates.

UGH.

She made it customary to go on a walk with Sam when she was angry upset, a healthy let out of her negativity through something other than physical smashing. So embarrassing to lose in front of her boyfriend, her friends and her parents. "ugh," she groaned at the memory of when she had to shower and meet all of them after the match.

UUUUGH.

Sam was rather accustomed to these walks now, and if he had to admit, he was grateful for them. To know Genny was to know her emotion. She was a force to be reckoned with when she was mad, yes, but she was never someone whom you had to pick and pry to understand where you stood with her. What you saw was what you got.

And, fortunately, the source of her irritation today wasn't Sam.

He had known by the last few minutes of the match that post-match Genny wouldn't be a hoot. For as much as he loved the girl, she was never exactly the best loser. In true good-boyfriend form, he wrapped an arm around her shoulder and attempted to improve her spirits. Comforting was never his forte, but he did genuinely try when it came to Genny. Whether or not he was successful was another story.

"It's a shame you guys lost today, but that's part of the game, I suppose." Mm, not exactly his best, but it was true, right? He went on. "You'll probably face them again in playoffs, after all – you can beat them then, when it counts." Or counts more, that is.

Sam sucked at comforting, true, but only when it sprouted out of his own version of what Genny wanted at the moment. He excelled at it when he went with the flow and let her dictate her channel of relief, but let's not dwell on that right now. Sam was doing his best, she could feel that. She accepted the arm-wrapping gesture by leaning into him a little, though keeping her arms crossed and her brows furrowed. "Oh please don't give me the standard you-lost-and-you-suck-but-it-is-not-the-end-of-the-world speech." she didn't mean to sound exasperated, but immediately as she said that, she heard her exasperation in her tone. "I'm sorry, I'm just..." her eyes caught sight of some baseball advertisement in the street, muggle sports for those who didn't know. She knew of those types of sports but never tried playing any. All her life focused around Quidditch. "...maybe I should change to baseball or something. Or even better, asports without a bat..." Okay, this time she sounded stupid and dramatic.

... what was this smell, by the way? Genny's brown eyes caught sight of the vendor by the huge statue. Was this sandwich stand there all the time? She was locked in that mood where she didn't want to admit that a falafel wrap would cheer her up... so Sam had to figure that out all by himself. All she did to help was to steer them in that direction and try not to stare too intently at the vendor.

Subtlety was not her game EITHER, but she was learning. Dating a pseudo-Ravenclaw taught her a lot of things including subtlety and collecting her laundry in a hamper instead of sprawling them on the chair for Coco to play with them all week.

"When have I ever said that you sucked?" Never. So don't sound quite so exasperated there, Genny Tate. Genny was well aware that she didn't suck – if she did, she wouldn't be playing quidditch professionally; so Sam wasn't going to allow her to sink in to her sulking that much. His blue eyes followed hers to the baseball posters, which he found to be very odd in general. Wasn't baseball an American sport? He'd at least first expect to see that muggle sport rounders before baseball. To be honest, they both seemed rather lackluster to him, as far as sports went. "Stick to quidditch," he answered dully, knowing she was only feeling sorry for herself and would never actually switch sports. Not to mention, it was a little late for that.

Getting Genny food was already on his agenda – it almost always improved her mood, after all – and so he happened to have the same idea when he spotted the vendor by the statue. "Well, I'm hungry, and I know you're always hungry," especially after a match, "So let's get some good street food? My treat." A little food now, followed by some favorable physical activities at home, and they'd both be in a good mood.

Uhm. Was she supposed to answer that question? "I dunno, shut up, Sam." She snuggled in closer to him, her cheek touching his shoulder because she knew he never said it. If Sam didn't say it, then he didn't believe it was true. He always took things way too literal, though, which sometimes was annoying when she was making a point using little logic. "Okay, only because you're persistent." About her not joining baseball. She would agree that it was lacklustre (though wouldn't choose that fancy word) by the way, they didn't even fly, they just hit the ball and ran from one square to another. Muggles were so funny sometimes.

What a great boyfriend he was, picking up on the hint she provided regarding the food, or maybe he just knew her for way too long and this was already in his plans? Either way, Genny smiled and nodded her head. "I'll only take two wraps--" as opposed to getting her usual three. They were SMALL falafels, don't judge her. "--I don't want a fake baby bump when I wear my dress to David's soiree thing." she confessed airily. "Extra hot sauce, no cabbage." she leaned up to give her charming feeder a peck on the lips as a thank you.
