Default Park Bench

Placed strategically along the south end of the street, there are about five park benches on either side of the street offering a place for the weary to rest their tired feet for a moment. There is one situated between Eeylops and Flourish and Blotts, one between Weasley's Wizard Wheezes and Ollivanders - and then on the opposite side of the street, between Primpernelle's and Wiseacres, and Sugarplums and the Menagerie. The fifth bench is where the cobblestone ends, clearly placed there to let you know you've reached the end of the street and to turn back now.

Though I would be wary of the bench near Sugarplums, as well as the one near WWW, as both seem to have fairly strong odors associated with them. The one near WWW simply because WWW gained a store location right near the rubbish bin, which holds various items, some still of value, but many decomposing. And that Sugarplums bench? It used to be home to at least one homeless person who's hair was so matted, it could have been used by your front door, and who likely hadn't had a proper shower or change in clothes in several years. The lovely shopkeeper assistant from Sugarplums saw to it that the homeless of the area were sorted out though.... the stench still lingers. She is currently working on that.

SPOILER!!: Genny!

She was dueling.

She got to the benches in a moment, and the boy sitting on the bench in front of her looked like he was trying to be invisible. Like, he was hiding from someone. Someone who could hurt him?? No! Genny walked up to him confidently and watched him for a moment, then squatted to try and look at his face without being in his personal space. "Are you okay? I can help you." She jumped up and smacked her chest, she was the man.

Though he'd already managed to calm himself down significantly, Daxton kept his eyes closed, but was now listening to the sounds of the street around him. When he wasn't being overwhelmed and overloaded by the stimulus and information around him, he always always always tried to remain on alert. It was just incredibly difficult at times.

So he heard her footsteps, except he didn't know that she was a her at first. Only that the person was small, and that their footsteps were erratic, up until the moment that they weren't. He heard the footsteps become more like a regular gait, and realised that whoever it was had approached him. So he wasn't surprised when her voice rang out from somewhere right in front of him.

Daxton's eyes opened immediately. He realised he was still rocking slightly, and stopped, and looked right at the girl. Removing his hand from where it covered the lower portion of his face, Daxton started to make a very specific gesture with his hands, before realising there was a very high chance it would not be understood. He nodded his head once instead. Yes, he was okay.

The boy regarded the girl carefully, silently, suspiciously. He wondered if he might need to get his notebook out.

"Understood." She replied simply and left it there.

She watched as he wiggled his toes within his socks and had to suppress a giggle. He elected to remove the cloth encasing his feet as well, only sparing her a questioning glance as he repeated part of her name."Yes." And......there went the other sock too. At least he placed his effects neatly beside himself, his bare feet brought a small smile to her lips.

His question to her name brought a small grin as she looked back to his face. "Kaimi is my middle name. So in a sense it is Annette Kaimi, I suppose it is also something else too though." Yup, she was sure he had some sort of nickname or something at least to share with her for her last name. "Are there more facets to your name, Rhydian Blackhold?"

The woman beside him got a serious raised eyebrow for that. Who, in their right mind, gave their middle name as part of a greeting, without a last name? Unless she wasn't in her right mind. That was totally possible. After all, he did have to explain to her the delicacies of extending shoes, both by muggle and wizarding means.

It...was Annette Kaimi and...something else? What something else?

For the first time that day, he shifted uncomfortably. This woman was being strangely protective and secretive of her names. It stirred an old, long dead worry and he was tempted to put his socks back on. Bare feet didn't do much for running...

"Do...I know you?"

He was just going to ignore the question for now. It was suddenly something that seemed dangerous.

Kai was totally lost as to what had just happened. He shifted a bit, seeming uncomfortable and neglected to answer her question. Did he......know her? Her expression changed from playful to admittedly confused as she looked at the blonde. "Not that I am aware of.......isn't that why we were introducing ourselves?" What a strange question to ask in the middle of an introduction / banter. "Did you visit Hawaii at some point? If not than its really unlikely." She had traveled yes, but eighty percent of her life had been spent in Hawaii and research and schooling. "My full name is Annette Kaimi Fern. Kaimi is Polynesian and sounds sort of odd between the first and last names, not sure what my parents were thinking on that one or the length of the name as a whole. Regardless.....its all a mouthful and I usually go by Kai. Unless you were in Hawaii , at a surf competition or an ecological science /toxicology exposition somewhere and saw me.......I am ninety-eight point two percent sure this is the first time I have ever seen you in my life." There went the scientist in her, and her small speech as to why his question and expression was odd. She wasn't judgmental but sweet Circe what had his knickers in a bunch. Could they go back to playful banter now please?

She straightened up when the boy's eyes flew open, and grinned at him encouragingly. Her grin dropped when he started making odd signals with his hands and Genny was about to ask what that meant but he nodded finally and stopped those movements. Could he hear?? Was he one of those who read your lips and understood you? She blushed deeply at the possibility, embarrassed that she might have embarrassed him. Aw but she didn't mean it!

Now he was inspecting her like this was the first time anyone had ever talked to him. Oh how sad. Genny walked slowly and sat on the edge of the bench next to him, with a small smile on her face. "Who--" She started but remembered that he might not hear her, so she started making up signals with her hands trying to convey her question. Who was he waiting for?

The blushing did not go unnoticed - there was not a lot that ever went unnoticed when it came to Daxton - though he could not say he knew what had brought it on. He kept watching the girl, never quite looking her in the eye, right up until she sat next to him.

There was a fleeting moment of panic then, which went through his entire body, gripping every muscle. But he quickly noticed that she did not touch him, intentionally or otherwise, and so Daxton relaxed, just a little bit. He looked back up at her as she started to speak, making gestures of her own instead. At first, Daxton was totally surprised, wondering what the odds were that he might have randomly encountered someone he could communicate with. But it soon transpired that those signals were not ones he recognised. Daxton watched the girls hands in what he assumed was a kind of crude attempt at sign language, trying to ascertain what she was trying to say based on the first word he had heard. It was impossible.

Before she'd even finished up her question, the boy had turned his focus to something else; trying to extract something from his jacket pocket. It took a moment, but he soon produced a notebook with a black cover and ballpoint pen slotted tidily inside the spiral wire that kept the pages together. Daxton flipped through it, likely giving glimpses of pre-written words, statements and questions printed neatly on every page. He quickly found what he was looking for held it up for the girl to read.

'I can hear. You can talk.'

Genny dropped her hands awkwardly in her lap, realizing he did not understand what she tried to 'say'. She made a mental note to let her mum teach her sign language, it was very cool talking without making any sound, it must've been handy in stealthy conditions among Aurors as well.

The boy started taking something out of his pocket, at which point Genny slid a little further from him as instructed by her dad when meeting up with a stranger no matter how frail and small they looked. It turned out to be a notebook. "Cool." She whispered to herself, sliding closer again and spying on those pages that were turning far too fast for her to comprehend. Davie would love to study those and generate ideas about this boy if he were here.

'I can hear. You can talk.'? Her mouth made a perfect O for a second before she grinned again. She made a motion with her hand asking for a quill, hoping this signal was universally known? Because she liked this game better than talking! She wanted to write things down for him, too!

Daxton simply stared at the girl, quite confused, though it was likely hard to tell through his stony expression. He'd informed her that she could talk, and here she was... not talking. In fact, she'd gone back to the gestures again. It didn't make sense.

He understood that gesture, at least. She wanted his pen, to write something down. Daxton blinked, waited a moment longer, then nodded once again and poked the pen through the spiral binding so he could take it out the other side. He held it out to the girl and waited.

...

After a delay of about five seconds, he seemed to suddenly realise something else, at which point he flipped to a fresh page in his notebook, and held it out for her to write something. But not for her to take; he kept a vice-like grip on the top of the book. Not because it held any sentimental value, but because it was one of his best tools, what with all its pre-written pages, and had taken a long time to build up. If someone ran off with it (and anyone might try), all that time and effort would have been wasted. Daxton did not appreciate neither his time nor his effort being wasted.

...and gladly, he understood her gesture this time. She wasn't so bad after all! Genny grabbed the muggle quill and looked at it to register all the details. She had seen a muggle quill before, but she hadn't written with one. They didn't have any in the house and she simply didn't write much anyway. Now she could try it out and tell Pepe about it, he'll be thrilled to hear about this adventure with the mute boy.

She tried to pull the notebook out of his grasp, thinking he was offering it to her, but couldn't. It was like he had a grip of steel. It was a little scary looking at his unchanging face while prying it away unsuccessfully. Well fine, she could write while he held it for her. 'Are you waiting for someone?' A tip of her tongue stuck out of the corner of her mouth as she wrote, then she pushed the notebook closer to him to read it, all the while grinning and gripping the muggle quill tighter in her hands.

Daxton watched the progress of the pen, reading the words upside down as they appeared on the page. He wasn't sure why she hadn't just asked him loud, and was busying himself with solving the puzzle before him while she finished writing. One conclusion he had drawn, seeing as he knew she could speak and she now knew he could hear her, was that she simply wanted to write things down instead of saying them. But that didn't make much sense. Daxton liked to write almost as much as he liked to read, but inscribing entire conversations often became boring, long-winded, and frustrating. In his mind, it was the same for everyone else.

Or, he thought to himself, mulling things over. Perhaps she's like me. Though he'd never met anyone else who could only talk on occasion, that theory seemed a lot more likely to him, and it too fit all the evidence provided. Plus, he could relate to it, and therefore it struck him as realer, more probable.

Angling the notebook so he could see it better when it was nudged back, Daxton scanned the words now they were right side up, though he already knew what they said. Looking up at the girl again (or rather looking slightly past her because it was more comfortable that way) he nodded his head. Waiting for someone. Yes.

Daxton turned the notebook back to the girl again, so that she would be able to write another question if she wanted. After all, she still had his pen.

Genny didn't notice this before but now she caught his eyes and he wasn't looking directly into hers. Why? She touched her face, trying to see if there was something funny on it that he didn't want to look at. But nope, she hadn't been eating anything, anyway. Maybe he was just watching their surroundings while they talked-- wrote. This boy was very odd.

Yes, she wanted to write another question. Genny took back the notebook and scribbled as quickly as she could, 'who are you waiting for?' And because she was too impatient to wait, she wrote another question, 'why don't you talk?'. There. Now he was free to answer, she nudged the notebook towards him and shifted where she sat to a more comfortable position. This was going to take a while.

Once again, Daxton read the words upside down as the girl wrote them. He didn't really need for the words to be right side up, so by the time he was turning the notebook back his way, he was actually already mentally forming his response.

He needed a pen. At first, Daxton had considered grabbing the pen back to write with, but leaning into her personal space felt too much like sacrificing his own. In any case, he had spares in his pockets, as was his habit. While the girl fidgeted around, Daxton extracted another biro from a different pocket and wrote out his responses, his handwriting deliberate and neat though it took him almost no time at all to write. When he was done, he looked up again, shuffling around on the bench so he was sat on it sideways, cross-legged and facing the girl. He held out the notebook for her to read and respond.

'My mum. She is in the book shop.

I just can't talk to people. Why don't you talk?'

Genny watched him get another pen, and wondered how many more pens did he have in that jacket of his. Did he have other things than pens in there? Maybe things that are more fun to play with? Her eyes only lingered a moment there before she adjusted her sitting position to mimic his own.

She looked down at his writing, which was intricate and lovely unlike her scribbles. In her defense, she didn't write much at home... or at all. There was no use in writing when you were taught one-on-one and your father let you do whatever you wanted as long as it wasn't life-threatening. Her mother would've loved her to sit for five minutes to read or write, but Genny was incapable of doing that. She tried. She only managed it in Mother's day.

His first answer was expected, the second one didn't even qualify as an answer. She leaned forward to write on the notebook again, her hand moving raggedly across the page with that little tongue tip poking out in concentration again.

What a strange question to ask in the middle of an introduction / banter.

Yes. Yes that was generally why one introduced oneself. But it wasn't an exclusive gesture to those unbeknownst to one another. Those that did know each other, or at least one knowing the other, also used the greeting. A form of slight as it was. A dangerous overture. But she had apparently, missed that suggestion? She seemed positively baffled.

But not as baffled as he was when she suggested that he was either a surfer or a scientist. So, clearly they did not know one another. He would have laughed, had his toes not been itching for cover. Against all dignity, he lifted his foot, hooked it over his knee and scratched at the bottom of it, his eyes never leaving the woman beside him.

Purpose number one, it was itchy. Purpose number two, she might be so disgusted as to his tendencies that she would up and leave. Then, all problems would be solved.

Ninety-eight...point....two. Rhydian just blinked at her. Wasn't it an all or nothing type deal? "....What happened to the point one point eight percent?"

And he'd thought playing seeker was hard, merlin he couldn't imagine being a professor or flying instructor full time. He was sure they were just excited for the fact that he had played professional quidditch for almost 8 years. They'd been much more interested in talking about his playing quidditch and getting autographs than learning how to lean forward on the broomstick without falling sideways off of it!

He stretched his long legs out in front of him as he closed his eyes. He was looking forward to a few days off, nothing to do but....search for an apartment in London. Ugh, maybe he should just take up a room at the Leaky for awhile. He didn't much want to really look around for an apartment. He'd just moved everything from America to Eric's flat, but knew he couldn't exactly stay there. Meh, maybe he'd stay there another few days and decide.

It had been a long morning. Kenzie was good at her job. She knew how to sell properties, she was 99% accurate when reading what people were looking for in their new houses and she was fantastic at making sure that those points were available in the houses that her clients were looking at.

She was also fantastic at making their properties look more up market than they might have been originally, simply because she was her. An Irish woman who carried an air of being an elite, stuck up snob… And mostly, that worked with her clients - because they were arrogant self-proclaimed elite’s. If there was one thing that McKenzie Cartiér Black had learnt since she had taken on this job and her apprenticeship; it was that your own personal look went a long way in selling a property.

Which made no sense. At all.

It wasn’t like SHE was going to be living in the house with them. However, Kenzie wasn’t one to complain if it made her life easier.

Clutching a muggle orange and passionfruit frappachino in her right hand and her handbag in her left, McKenzie moved through the park until she found the closest benches. As much as she loved the park, her next client was close to this side of the park. As she moved towards them, she sighed as she noted that two of the benches were in the sun - and there were people sitting at both of them.

One, she didn’t really want to go anywhere near… the second. The second however, was cute. So she moved towards his bench, her fingers already feeling the coldness from her drink.

Sigh. Why did he have his eyes closed? Anyone could be robbing him right now… Well, not really as he didn’t seem to have much possessions out for the world to see, but still. It was the principle of the thing. ”Excuse me, can I sit here?” AKA, unless you tell me no, I’m sitting here.

Kai watched in surprise as the man with whom she was sharing the bench, hooked his foot over his other leg and scratched. He was watching her and scratching his foot and she really didn't know what to make of it. He seemed almost more creature than man and she didn't know how much she'd trust putting her bare feet on this ground though. He could get some form of fungus on his feet. Maybe that is what happened, that was why he was itching his foot. She elected not to ask or say anything though, it was his body not hers.

She wasn't sure what his expression was for but it was soon cleared up with a question. One she didn't realize needed asked but perhaps it was the scientist in her. "Margin for error. There is always the chance that one is wrong and you want to account for it, even if you are certain that there is no error in your assumption." Which she was pretty certain of.

Rhydian stopped scratching and just stared at her. Three blinks later and he dropped his foot on the ground. "No you don't. If you are certain there's no error, then you don't account for error. That makes error in an error-less certainty."

And now. His brain was hurting. How had they gotten from shoes, to this?

Speaking of shoes, as the disturbed frown was working its way across his brow, Rhydian plucked his socks off the bench and proceeded to stuff them into his shoes. "It was a lovely first meeting, Ms Annette Kaimi Fern. I will try to remember to wear more comfortable shoes next time."

Default For Lislchen! ^_^

Lysander wearily approached the last park bench in a long line of park benches, passing by the other four and judging them accordingly. Some smelled downright foul and some had other people already sitting on them - Lysander couldn't decide which fate was worse: stench or company. Luckily for the anti-social young man, he at last spotted the final bench which was both devoid of people and any noticeable scent. Good enough.

After a day of solitary shopping for necessities, he was tired of interacting with others and also had a very unpleasant rock in his shoes. He took a seat on the last abandoned bench, his tall and angular frame unfolded quietly as he adjusted to the relatively uncomfortable seat. Finally, a place to dump out whatever rock was currently his biggest enemy! He leaned over and gently untied the shiny black dress shoe on his left foot and quickly turned it over to release any rock or piece of grass that might have been his trouble.

He was quite the funny sight, actually, dressed in his usual formal suit of smooth gray, a dark emerald tie fastened smugly around his neck. All of this, and yet one shoe off, now being examined by the eyes behind his large black glasses frames - leaving his paisley sock exposed for all to see.

Frankly, Olly couldn't care less whether or not someone looked funny.

What she DID care about however was finding a place to sit down. And since most of the other benches were filled with happily chattering people – and the rest with weird looking loners – she chose the one Lysander was on. Congratulations, you won nothing. Actually Olly didn't even really look at him when she sat down with a sigh, that sounded a LOT like a groan really.

Today was officially NOT her day.

But at least she'd found a place to sit. Olly had been running around ALL day and her legs were killing her. She just wanted to go home and watch TV with Józsua right now, to be honest. But she couldn't. She still had shops to go to. Not right now though. No, right now she was simply going to sit here. Yes.

My brother's with me, too.
I like using your pen. Why don't you talk to people? Can you whisper?

His turn!

The contrast of her handwriting beside his was almost enough to make Daxton twitch. Almost. Again, he watched the progress of the pen as she wrote, frowning a little at the questions, because he wasn't entirely sure how to answer without going into the whole thing. And frankly, he couldn't be bothered to do all that.

So when it was Daxton's turn to write, he kept it simple.

'Because I can't. No, I can't whisper. I can sign and I can write.
Are you a witch? Do you have a wand?'

He'd added the last couple of questions almost as an afterthought. Because Daxton had realised that this girl, whose name he still hadn't even considered asking, was obviously in this street because she was magic too. And other than that strange professor man who'd visited his house, Daxton hadn't properly interacted with anyone else who was magic, let alone someone his age. Thinking of all the things that this girl might know that he didn't know was simultaneously thrilling and incredibly frustrating. He turned the notebook back to her, almost enthusiastic in his haste, eyes flicking up to the girl's face for just a millisecond when he was quite sure her own eyes would be on the notebook.

Lysander looked up from his shoe inspection as he heard a loud, and rather rude, groan as someone plopped down on his bench. He glanced at the unknown woman from just above his heavy black frames, his sharp green eyes evaluating her and her groan with mild interest and slight distaste. He certainly hoped she wasn't expecting some reaction to come from him as a result of this disturbing sound. What was he supposed to do? Are you okay? Rough week? Bleh. Lysander's expression scrunched up at the thought.

Small talk. What a nightmare.

He proceeded to ignore her, going back to his shoe for several moments until he really became rather agitated with her presence just a few feet from him. What kind of game was she playing? Sitting on his bench, making exasperated sounds?? Was this some kind of test? Of his chivalry? Well. Ha. Lysander firmly believed that chivalry was a concept best left to the middle ages -- it was not his job as a gentleman to be polite to a random woman, simply because he was a man and she was a woman. Chivalry was dead, as far as he was concerned. "I certainly hope you're not waiting for me to ask what's the matter," he stated dryly, his deep voice cutting through the afternoon air as his eyes remained on his shoe.

It wasn't until a few minutes into sitting on the bench that Olly even LOOKED at the guy next to him. Who was apparently trying to get something out of his shoe. Okay. Not that she cared. Her eyes went back to a shop across from them without actually seeing it. She reached down to rub her legs a little as if that would make them hurt less. Maybe she should pick up running again. That would certainly help a lot. Yes. She should definitely do that. Maybe she could even convince Józsua to join her.

Although...probably not.

Olly was so lost in thought that it took her a moment to realize the guy next to her was in fact talking to her. "What?" She looked at him, raising her eyebrows slightly. "No." Her tone clearly suggested that that was a ridiculous idea. Why would he think that? "I didn't sit here because of you." Unfortunately, she was a little too exhausted to come up with a witty remark right now so that would have to do.

Weird person.

"Superb," was all Lysander responded as he heard the woman next to him admit that she didn't sit down on the bench because of him. "I would hate to think you joined me for some form of sympathy or gossip hour." As per usual, he had very little understanding of how rude his remarks could be. Or perhaps he could tell, and simply didn't care. Lysander wasn't one for making friends and certainly wasn't trying to find company on a park bench.

Just getting this rock out. Once it's out, he would leave. Yes. Any moment now... Ugh, and yet he couldn't seem to find the culprit of his misery and so he remained glued to the bench grumpily. He glanced at her shopping bags. "Don't you have friends or an idiotic boyfriend or something to shop with and listen to your bemoaning?" he asked, rather rudely, though to Lysander it was just another question.

'Superb.'

What even...??? Olly wasn't sure whether to simply ignore him or laugh. So at first she remained quiet, seeing as his first statement didn't really require a reply. She just continued to stretch her legs a little. There should be a spell for that really. Give you super!legs that never hurt or something. Someone should invent that. Or maybe it existed. She should ask Alice. Or West. They were both professional Quidditch players after all. Maybe they knew.

Oh. But look, an actual question.

Olly raised her eyebrows at the guy next to her, a somewhat amused smirk on her lips. "You DO know, YOU are the one talking to ME, yeah?" Like. When did she 'bemoan' anything? She hadn't really done or said anything so far. Or not a lot at least. So HE was really the one who seemed to be in need of someone to talk to.

Also no she didn't have a boyfriend. She had a girlfriend and a 'husband' on the side.

Lysander looked at the person sitting next to him on the bench as she noted that he was the one speaking to her so much and he opened his mouth to retort when...he realized she was right. Immediately upon realizing this, his mouth snapped closed and his large green eyes fell into a slanted glare behind his large glasses. He hated when other people were right.

Swiftly and silently, his large mouth pursed in annoyance, he returned to his shoe and chose to ignore her. Yes, he could do that. Honestly, he owed her nothing. He wouldn't even tell her about the rock in his shoe! Hmph.

Olly tried to keep her face casual but couldn't help but smirk a little at his reaction. Ah yes. She was right, huh? Sorry not sorry, dude. After watching him out of the corner of her eyes for a moment, she stretched some more, not quite ready to continue with her shopping. Besides, she had such nice company and all.

"I'm Olly, by the way." Just saying.
