Default DADA Lesson 1 - Shhh

The first thing you'll notice as you enter classroom 104 is that it doesn't at all resemble a classroom. For those of you more familiar with Headmaster Trent's teaching methods, this may not come as much of a surprise, not especially since the notice did mention it being a practical lesson. There isn't a desk or chair in sight.

What is present? Cushions. Padding. You've more or less walked into a fully padded, white room. The Headmaster is by the door waiting to greet you and ready to slam the door shut the moment the clock strikes 11 am.

The room is rather comfy. It's the sort you'd find in a soundproof environment. The floors, the ceiling, every crevice and corner is covered in spongy absorbent material.

Step lively, there's a lot to do today!

OOC: Welcome to the first DADA lesson of the term everyone!! Opening just a little earlier because I won't be home later like I thought I would be <3 Don't forget to read the classroom rules before posting. I'll have the first question up in 24 hours

The lesson hasn't started yet

CLASS HAD BEGUN!

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

This was turning out...well. No one was on the floor rolling and writhing in pain over being hit in the face too hard, no one was prematurely running away or ducking to avoid what they assumed was an oncoming ball. Good. It was good.

Malachi glanced down at his watch. It was time.

"Alright start wrapping up then head back over." The man gestured them closer. It was almost time for what he was looking forward to but there was still a bit that needed to be gotten through.

"We've still got one more activity but before we get there, what can you tell me about non-verbals? What makes them affective? How do they work? How advantageous are they? Anything you know is fine."

OOC: Wanted to give you guys some extra time to wrap up (and RL happened like I thought it would) but the next question is up! I'll be back to fully move the class in about 24-28 hrs.

She turned to face Patrick as she placed the blindfold around her eyes.
Patrick nodded, “Sounds great. Thanks Daisy.” He readied himself to toss. He was good at this so he wasn’t so sure why he was nervous. He did this all the time over the summer before he broke his ankle. Sheesh now he just needed to breath deep.

”Ready?” He waited to hear her say she was. He would hate to throw it while she was hyping up for him to throw it. “Alright, I’m going to throw it about waist level front and center.” He was ready to throw but was so afraid it would hurt her. Before letting go he let out, “incoming.” ready to let her catch it. He waited to see if she caught it.

Just as his eyes would have seen the result he heard the question about verbal cues. “Well the fact that you don’t know what the person is using makes them effective because the person on the other end will not know what is coming to prepare a defense.” Well at least thats what he assumed since he had never dueled before.

"Ready!" Daisy called out in the direction of Patrick's voice. When the Slytherin prefect mentioned where he was going to throw the ball, Daisy nodded as she placed her hands at the location on her body. Much to her relief and surprise, she managed to just catch the ball in her fingertips. "Brilliant directions, Patrick!" Daisy replied as she undid her blindfold and headed back over to where Headmaster Trent was.

At the question about non-verbal spells, Daisy tried a different tact and raised her hand. "Sometimes non-verbal spells don't work as they should. A non-verbal dark curse might not be as effective due to the reduced power of the spell."

The Idea Man Kori-Kins

Thomas had been sitting quietly for most of the lesson, as he was in total awe at how big this place was and how much information that he needs to process. He though decided to have a go at answering the last question. Putting his hand up he smiled. "Your opponent won't be able to hear which spell you are casting?"

She wasn’t a sore sport generally but this was embarrassing, especially when she had felt SO confident that her throw would hit target. The girl walked a little closer to Nina, nodding towards the ball that was lying somewhere nearby. “Would you mind throwing it back to me, please?” Because she had another throw left, yeah?

.....

Hold on. Her brows furrowed, Lenora suddenly noticed Nina’s blindfold.. which looked ridiculously loose. No. OMG. O.M.G. So, Nina had been able to see where the ball was coming from?? What EVEN? Did the Slytherin really think that she wouldn’t find out? Ugh. Lenora bit her lip, incredibly annoyed but oddly enough, a little amused too.

More annoyed than amused, just to be clear.

“You wouldn’t mind tying your blindfold a little tighter, would you?” She raised an eyebrow, hands on her hips. She had wanted to finish this activity as soon as possible but Nina made everything so difficult. As per usual.
^________^

"Sure," the Slytherin was QUITE pleased with herself and how she had managed to swiftly move out of the ball's way. Never mind the fact that she had kind of cheated. That wasn't important. The look on Lenora's face made it all worth it. But just she went to remove her blindfold in order to retrieve the ball... Said Gryffindor was fussing about something or another.

Oops.

Had she noticed?

"Oh, no problem," again, Nina gave her a thin-lipped smile though internally she was rolling her eyes EXTRA hard. But would you look at that?! "Out of time! That's such a shame," not. Because Nina didn't want to continue with this activity. Soooo. "Looks like we'll have to get back to it some other time."

Because now, there was a question being posed to the class. Thanks, Lenora.

Enough talk about non-verbals though; Maeve wanted to learn them already!!! And even though he had eluded that they wouldn't be learning until later this week, the Gryffindor was hoping that by later this week he mis-spoke. MAYBE??

What makes them effective? Patrick pretty much summed that one up, but alsoooo, "You have to pay attention and watch for visual cues which may or may not prepare the person. And if you're without visual cues," she tugged lightly on the blindfold that was covering her eyes still waiting for Missa, "you'd have to listen and use your other senses to hopefully figure it out."

So shook her head and opened the blindfold to put around her eyes. "I'll do this first, I'll be alright." Especially now that he was going to be her partner.

Giving him a smile before she turned and made her way to her spot that he would be throwing the ball at her, she lifted the blindfold and placed it over her eyes tieing it tight. "Just try not to aim for the face, I don't think my nose was healed correctly the first time. " It definitely seemed bigger to her then it should be.

Standing at the ready, she waited for the ball to come at her.

Alright, so Chloe wanted to be blindfolded first. It really didn't matter that much to Gunnar, though he was a little surprised for reasons. He nodded then went to his side of the line while she went to her spot.

"No, I wasn't going to," Gunnar assured his sister when she asked him not to aim for her face. He wouldn't try to hit her in the face after her recent head injury. In fact, he was thinking pretty much as far away as he could.

"Okay, I'm going to throw the ball at your legs.... on your left." His right, her left. "Ready...? Now!" He wanted to let her know the exact moment, and he tossed the ball, aiming right where he said.

And soon enough, he heard the professor's voice. Nonverbals, right. Gunnar had been practicing them for some time with little luck. Listening to some of his peers, he raised his hand as well. "They're difficult to learn and take some advanced knowledge of spellwork. They also take a lot of concentration and focus to work properly."

He had his reasons, they were entertaining reasons and while he wasn’t quite sure how the students would react, he was ready to get the ball rolling—once 11 rolled in of course. For now, the man contented himself with standing by the door replying to greetings.

Oh merlin he was going to enjoy this. Did he seem like he was in a good mood? Because he was in a good mood. No one had crashed his office with upsetting news yet. All was good.

”Morning, Tamesis.”

Was this room bouncy?

”I suppose it could be. I confess I haven’t given it a fair shot. Fairfield over there has some sort of idea but I reckon it couldn’t hurt to try it yourself before we begin.” There would be no bouncing at that point. It would be right down to business.

No, but it really was time for the lesson to begin, all jokes aside. Malachi looked around at the students, doing a mental head count. When he was done counting, he flicked his wand in the direction of the door and watched it slam shut as it always did when it was time for the lesson to begin. Anyone that was late would not be getting in at all. He would deal with them later.

"Gather 'round everyone. It's time to begin the lesson. The first thing you'll notice now that the door's closed is how much this room absorbs sounds. It's soundproof, none of anything we do in here will get out. Is there a reason for this? None particularly, outside of getting you all used to a more silent environment. In this lesson, I want you all to find an appreciation for silence and the silent approach to things."

Some may have already gotten the gist of where the lesson was going. Either way, "I have a question. Think about it. All answers are welcome. It's not something you'll find in the textbooks that I hope you didn't tug along with you but rather you'll find the answer in daily experiences or the experiences of others. What are things that can be accomplished silently? Can you name something that requires silence in order to be effectively accomplished or keep you safe?"

He could think of at least a dozen things right off the bat but it would be interesting to see where their brains took them and how widely they were allowing themselves to think.

WHO WAS SHE TO SAY NO????

There was no way that she was going to say no. Grinning like she hadn’t heard anything else as exciting today, she put her bag down beside Avery and the others, and then jumped over to the side so that she wouldn’t knock anyone else over. Hmm. It was bouncy… Slightly. More-So than her mats, not as much as the board or a trampoline… but she could make do. Checking over her shoulder that the class was still filing into the room, she jumped to gain height and momentum then did a few somersaults before landing and bouncing on the padding with joyful glee. Oh, that was amazing.

With a wide grin on her face she moved back over to the main body of the class. ”Professor?” she called out. ”Can I practice gymnastics in here over lunch before you turn it for your next class?” It was far too good and fun an opportunity to miss out on. Pleaseeeeeeee.

She’d get an answer later, right now it was time to have FUN. She could feel it. It was going to be a great lesson. Ohhhh soundproof. Nice! She could yell and yell and whoop in joy and no-one would be annoyed or interrupted!

Her hand was in the air before he’d finished his statement and question… which made her face flounder slightly. ”Oh, I was going to say you need to soundproof studios so that amazing Wrockbands can record… but then you added ‘keep us safe’ and that… doesn’t really fit that description.” Whoops. Nothing to see here.

Instead, she listened to what everyone else offered and nodded along as she tried not to blush at how badly she’d answered. She really should have waited, had patience. For someone who liked all the facts, she certainly hadn’t had them all this time.

"Now that we've discussed the virtues of silence, we're going to try a little exercise that ties in with what one of your classmates said. In duels, life truly does become easier when you aren't announcing your every intention to your opponent. Keeping the element of surprise is often just the push you need to get you into the winning position. The easiest way to keep the element of surprise? Non-verbal spells."

The man reached into the pit for the balls, passing them around to the students. It wouldn't be enough for everyone, in fact only half of them would end up with a ball. "We won't really get into non-verbals until Thursday's lesson but today we'll be doing something of a light introduction. Think of it as more a class on applicability. Getting you to solidly understand what makes them such a game changer."

They'd have an essay at some point, but he wouldn't bring THAT up just yet.

"Easiest way to do that is with a little game of dodgeball. As you can see, only half of you possess a ball. If you don't have one, find someone that does." Pair work. "If you don't have a ball, come collect a blindfold." Here he paused to fish the blindfolds from his pocket. He extended them to the students for them to take. "Those of you with blindfolds will be the first victi--volunteers." That was probably a better word for it. "This exercise is simple. In pairs, the student with the ball will have two shots at you. In one shot, you must say where your throwing the ball, whether to the left, the right, toward their face, by their legs. Be as detailed as you can. In the next shot, say nothing, just throw the ball. In both throws, the blindfolded student will have to dodge the attack." Did they see where this was going? It was essentially a duel. The spoken throw being the spell with an incantation and the silent throw being the non-verbal.

The balls would not be tremendously painful no matter how hard they were thrown, suffice to say the man didn't trust half of them. "Give yourselves some space along the line." At that, a line appeared dividing the room into equal halves. "Blindfolded kids on this side." He pointed. "And those with a ball on the other. Face each other. You can begin when you're ready. I'll give you about 10 minutes."

Ball pit!!!! She knew this lesson was going to be amaz--- ……… Did he just say non-verbal spells…

Holly didn’t know it was possible to feel sheet ice spread through her veins, but she was feeling it. Right now. She was only a third year, she hardly had a good base knowledge for dueling, never mind doing them non-verbally? Nibbling on her bottom lip, fingers wringing the material of her jumper just to give herself something to do, she tried to breathe. It would be okay, the Professor wouldn’t let anything happen to them. She trusted that much.

Just as she was getting her panicking under control, she got passed a ball and she murmured a thanks under her breath. She wasn’t sure if having a ball was good or not, so she just… waited. Okay. She could do this. It was two throws and two dodge-attempts with the ball. She looked around and found Jorgie, letting Alis be pulled away by one of the guys. She trusted Jorgie to throw a ball at her and know how important her face was. It was very important. Best friends understood this.

Standing on one side of the line ball in hand, she waited for Jorgie to put on the blindfold before she looked at her bestie. ”Your right hip, Jorgie.” She counted down softly from 3 to 1, and then pressed the ball away from her, letting it sail directly towards Jorgie’s right hip. It landed slightly further towards her belly button, but her friends hands were still well placed to catch it. She grinned, proud of her friend and her own aim. ”Throw it back, J. I’ll catch it.” She could see - which meant she could move around to catch it.

Taking a single step to the side, let Holly catch the ball easily - it showed that Jorgie grew up around sports… Sometimes she wished that she liked other sports more, was sure that her Dad would have loved that… but nope. Gymnastics or Quidditch…. Nothing else really held her interest.

Looking back over at Jorgie she smiled. ”Okay, can’t tell you where I’m throwing it - but I’m throwing it in the next 5 seconds.” She wasn’t sure if that was cheating, but on the count of 4 she threw the ball in Jorgie’s direction - aiming for left shoulder and Jorgie almost caught it, but it bounced off her hand. ”Oh man, that was so close Jorgie!” she laughed. Her bestie was amazing.

Next up, she got the blindfold and it was her turn. She watched as her world went black, and she heard everyone’s voices get sharper, louder - more… pitchy? Huh. They were more annoying when you couldn’t see anything. Interesting. She stood, light on her feet while she waited for Jorgie’s word - for the signal. When she spoke, she nodded her understanding of where the ball would be heading and she was prepared for it. Catching the ball and blocking the first pass, even if she had fumbled the ball and almost dropped it. She hadn’t… that was the important thing.

She threw it back to Jorgie, heard the thunck of her catching it and couldn’t help the soft grin that spread over her lips when she realised her hearing was much better without her vision. That was kind of cool. Staying focused, and bending slightly into a more defensive position she hovered and waited for Jorgie’s second throw. Listened. She heard the ball releasing… but it was too quick for her to react too. Her hands moved, hoping she was going in the right direction only for her hands to move too far, ball bouncing off of her forearm instead of being caught snuggly in her hands.

She frowned. She really hated losing.

… But she wanted to try being blindfolded again. She wondered if it would help her as a Keeper… Surely it would, having better hearing. Interesting.

Giggling from the thoughts of being a Keeper while wearing a blindfold, Holly shook her head and hand in hand with Jorgie moved back over to the Professor. She was bouncy, felt light. Even if she hadn’t managed to catch the second ball.

Biting her lip, Holly looked around the class at the older students. Non-Verbals felt like it should be on them. ”They sound really difficult... ” She offered, finally. ”Like, climbing Mt Everest type difficult... in that you need to train really really hard, and it is a marathon not a sprint.” She added.

Okay, fine. She was scared and terrified of this challenge. How on earth did it work? How did your wand manage to hear you? How did magic work if you didn’t say it out loud? And if you didn’t need to say it out loud, why were they not simply always taught magic non-verbally??

Non-verbals? Excellent. Eni had been looking forward to this class for awhile. She'd practiced at home over the past two summers, but with no luck. The theory she understood. Well, she thought she did. But sticking the landing? Hasn't worked out yet.

"You really only have a split second advantage with a non-verbal spell, but that can help quite a lot in a duel. It's also quite helpful when trying to stay stealthy as an Auror." She stated. Default catch up/wrapping up!
curly haired prefect - "sometimes I get angry!" - 30/90 - *chicken emoji* - probably @ Disney - I speak dog

Nettie frowned a little as her ball...totally connected exactly where she said it would on Ellie's arm. At least the younger girl admitted it was because she'd gotten her directions mixed up. Honestly there was no way that, if she DID get hit, it was on Nettie. Ellie was the one responsible for not getting hit!

She decided to try and go easy on her, aiming for left side again. In fact, she was aiming right where she'd said she was aiming the first time - and hopefully Ellie would be smart enough to pick up on that.

Unfortunately, she didn't have the chance to see if the ball connected, because her attention was drawn back to Trent as he called for them to all gather around. By the time she looked back, the ball had already landed on the floor. Had it hit Ellie or had she dodged it? She'd have to ask her later.

Heading back to the rest of the class, she wandered up just as Trent was asking about non-verbal spells. She raised her hand. "Well, the obvious advantage with non-verbal spells is that your opponent probably won't know what you're sending their way. Unless they know you really well, in which case, they may be able to guess what you're going to cast," she added.

"To the right. Got it!" Avalon said replied, flexing her right wrist and ankle in preparation. She waited for a few seconds before dodging her whole body to the left, attempting to avoid the throw. She didn't feel anything hit her, which was a good sign. But she also didn't hear the approach of the ball. She figured it should have made some sort of whizzing noise as it came closer. Maybe Analiese hadn't thrown it yet?

She just remembered a tidbit of information that her father had told her when discussing Ministry business. Avalon raised her hand. "I've heard that wand woods play a big role in nonverbal spells. Some woods are a lot easier to cast nonverbals with than others. I'm fairly certain that alder is the best wand wood for them."

Someone had acutely gotten the idea behind the exercise they'd just done. "Precisely. It's much harder to defend against things you don't know." Dodgeball, he hoped, would have made this perfectly clear to at least the majority of the students who'd participated in the small activity. You gained advantage in silence and when not the silent one you lost some.

Daisy replied as she undid her blindfold and headed back over to where Headmaster Trent was.

At the question about non-verbal spells, Daisy tried a different tact and raised her hand. "Sometimes non-verbal spells don't work as they should. A non-verbal dark curse might not be as effective due to the reduced power of the spell."

"That's a fair point, Swann, though it should be noted it isn't the spell that becomes weaker as a result of its non-verbal nature. It's the caster's intent, power and ability that determines that." So someone using "dark magic" could very well still be powerful as ever and he needed the students to not underestimate that. "It does require greater focus and power than a verbal spell and not every wizard can manage that. That is what can make the spell less effective." The wizard truly made the spell.

Did he notice that this one sat through the entire activity? Yes he did. Was he pleased about it? You could make your own assumptions on that as the man's expression didn't falter in the slightest. He didn't have time to make a large fuss about it.

"Correct. As Dooley also mentioned earlier, it becomes more difficult for the simple fact it makes it harder for you opponent to know what you're about to do." Surprises could be life savers in duels.

"You've brought up a few very good points, Walsh." Ones he hoped the others had been listening to.

"You'll have to become hyperaware of your surroundings if you want to have any chance of holding your own. This can come in the form of visual clues. Really know your spells and the wand movement can usually be a give away. Of course, several spells have similar wand movements with the most minute of differences which could still make visual clues difficult. Similarly, in a case where you have no visual cues, you may be fresh out of luck and go all out on defense."

SPOILER!!: McCarthy

"Another good point. Well done, McCarthy." Again, he hoped the others were listening. "Non-verbals are known for their difficulty. They require a great deal of focus and power, a greater connection with your wand, greater intent--which feeds into that connection with your wand. Having no verbal cues, you'll need to ensure without a doubt you and your wand are on the same page." Very good point that would be coming up in a minute.

She wanted to do what where now?

Malachi was taken aback by the question. It was such a departure from the topic of the lesson that it made the words just a little harder for him to understand. "Er.....sure.....I'll give you half an hour but then you've got to head to lunch. I don't want you late for lunch or your lessons following lunch." He would take it as a personal favour to him if she took the favour he was willing to offer her and handled it responsibly.

And she was another that truly understood the complexity of non-verbals. Good. If anything, it would make the activity have more meaning and make more sense to the lot of them.

"I like the way you put it. A marathon, not a sprint. Not everyone gets that. It won't happen overnight and does take a great bit of time and dedication. Not exactly a hobby you pick up over the weekend."

"Yes, that too." It was as he'd just explained. Good to know they were paying attention and actually internalizing rather than daydreaming.

"One might argue that knowing wand movements could negate the advantage of non-verbals but we may not always be able to depend on visuals and some are remarkably similar. There aren't nearly as many defenses immediately following a non-verbal spell."

Avalon pushed her blindfold up on her forehead as Headmaster Trent asked the next question. To be honest, she didn't know a whole lot that hadn't already been said about nonverbal spells.

"Right you are." And he was glad someone touched on this. "Intent and power aside, wand wood also plays a role in how easily or with how much difficulty one can achieve non-verbal magic. Just as some woods are better at defensive spells and some are better for healing ones, some are infinitely better at casting non-verbals than others."

Nice one.

"Excellent answers everyone." They could understand the fundamental benefits of non-verbals. This wasn't by any means an indication they would be able to immediately jump into casting them but that was fine as it wasn't what the lesson entailed. "As I mentioned earlier, we won't be getting into the actual practice until later this week, this being more an introductory lesson and all but it doesn't make learning this all any less pertinent."

There were actually a few things they needed to cover before moving on, not too many but things that needed saying all the same. "Given the difficult nature of non-verbals, it goes without saying that some spells will be more difficult to produce non-verbally than others. Simple spells, ones learned typically in your first year of formal wizarding education will naturally be more easily mastered than ones taught at the OWL or NEWT level." But surely that went without saying.

"Tamesis put it right when she said it was a marathon, not a sprint. The reasoning behind that is something McCarthy mentioned; it's very difficult. You won't sit for an afternoon and suddenly become an expert at non-verbals but that's not meant to discourage you. Rather, think of it as encouragement. Imagine the level of accomplishment when you finally do get them!" All that effort, focus and time finally paying off."[/b] With a flick of his wand, certain disillisionment charms fell away to reveal creatures chained to the corners of the room. They were skinny in frame with large teeth they gnashed and equally large. They kept pulling on the chains that bound them, trying to make for the man who'd been speaking the entire time. Red, menacing eyes locked on the students.

"Now that you understand the importance of silence, we've got one more activity." Two baskets appeared on the other end of the room and the opening in the wall reopened to reveal the ball pit again. "You'll have to get these balls across the room into those baskets. You'll be split into two teams. Let me stress, you'll have to do this silently. The creatures currently chained are hypersensitive to noise. They react to it. They attack anything they hear." Evidently. They yanked harder at the chains every time the man spoke. "This can be accomplished in a few ways. The one that may come to mind is by non-verbal magic. No talking. Easy peasy. Sure. However, this isn't an option for most of you. In that case, as a team, you'll need to find another way around it. If you do choose to attempt non-verbals, I suggest the levitation spell. It's a simple spell which should make it just a bit easier. Fair warning, screw it up, have that ball drop and it's charmed to be louder than a siren. You'll have creatures swarming in no time." Not how they wanted things to be. Was Dakest ready to scream now? Because the time for that had passed. "Get into teams. I'll release the creatures. Remember, not a SOUND." They could choose teams silently. They could plan silently if they knew what they were doing and could think far enough outside the box. The room was padded for this very reason. It would make at least movement a bit easier. They just had to work this out.

Malachi waited a silent moment for the creatures to settle then he vanished the chains.

Not. A. Sound.

OOC: The main activity is officially under way! Catch up is still allowed for anyone who wants to get the mini done (just title your post as such). You'll have until May 15th @ 11:59 pm EST. To complete this activity, the students will have to get the balls into the basket of their respective team. Keep in mind that this is very advanced magic. Students below fifth year who are still learning the basics of magic and spellwork are not likely to be able to do this. The levitation charm is easy verbally and has likely been mastered by 5th-7th years. This doesn't necessarily mean they'll be able to get it just like that especially if they haven't had any prior practice with non-verbals. The likelihood of success will go up with the year as well as how much personal work the character has been putting into this. Just keep things realistic to your characters ability and most important, have fun!

Oh, Missa was ready alright.

Even if she was starting to notice Mavae's reluctance at the blindfold - which is why her aim relaxed a bit, "don't worry, I am not gonna hurt you or anything," she assured the older girl gently, before turning her attention to the professor. Ah, so it all had to do with non-verbal spells.

Listening to Maeve speak, she nodded. Because the Gryffindor was definitely right - it all had to do with their senses in the end. Somber in her expression, she idly tucked some hair behind her ear, tracing the scar behind it, and couldn't help but wonder which was more important - the eyes or the ears.

Regardless, to wrap up the inevitable, she aimed the ball yet again at Maeve, "right side, thigh," she added, and give her a moment to understand before throwing the ball. Gently, ofccourse.

She was honestly missing her notebook right now. An itch to write everything down was very very prominent. Not that she was all that forgetful in life, but missing any detail in class seemed annoying to her. But all of that went out the window the moment the professor flicked her wand.

Missa's eyes WIDENED at the reveal. And what a reveal it was. This was better than anything they had done so far, and she wasn't sure if it was excitement she felt or fear. Nonetheless, she could not wait to attempt it.

Silently, she turned to look at Mavae again, and gestured at the space between the both of them. Did she wanna do this together too? She was an older one, she'd maybe know - non-verbal spells? Missa could direct and hold the ball, and they could be a balanced team, yeah?

You can throw at me first, then." She trusted him, knew even on his second throw, he wouldn't be throwing hard enough to hurt her. It was for this reason she tied her blindfold on with ease and waved her hand in front of her now masked eyes. "Can't see a thing. I'm ready to go."
Indigo was extremely grateful that Vita was going to be his partner. He trusted her completely. He also wasn't super psyched to have to throw a ball at her, though. But he'd be gentle so he didn't hurt her. Once she was ready he took the ball and stood a few feet in front of her. For this first round he was supposed to tell her where he was throwing. "Okay, I'm going to throw it toward your right shoulder." And then he threw it exactly toward where he had just said he would.

This time he had to throw it with no warning at all, which was... interesting. It was pretty obvious that throwing a ball at someone who couldn't see was most likely going to result in the ball hitting its target, but Kaiser would go along with the demonstration all the same.

"Alright," he said, just about managing to fight the urge to do a couple more kick-ups while he waited for his partner to put his blindfold back in place. "Here it comes..." He wound his arm back, ready to throw the ball... and paused...

... for quite a while, actually, all the better to keep his Ravenclaw partner quite literally in the dark about when the ball would be thrown. In his head, Kaiser counted to ten, and then, finally, threw it directly at his partner's chest. He doubted the balls could pack much of a punch but, all the same, he didn't put too much force behind the throw.
Putting his blindfold over his eyes again, Dorian readied himself for the second time. Having no idea how the slytherin was going to throw the ball was even more stressful than when he knew what was going to happen. Even from under his blindfold he held his eyes tightly closed in the hope that his hearing would be better. That was what happened in movies right?

He did hear the faint sounds of breaths as people threw the balls but none were near him or had hit him yet. "Did you forget how to throw or wh---ooow" as the ball hit his chest he gasped and stumbled backwards. He luckily did not fall this time and the gasp was more because the impact had shocked him rather than that it had hurt. "Good throw.... Say whats your name? Its kind of weird calling you Slytherin dude in my head"

He took off his blindfold, picked up the ball which he had dropped on the cushioned floor and walked over to him to switch places. "Here" he said as he handed over the blindfold but kept the ball and waited for him to get ready.

----

He gathered around with the rest of the group and when the Headmaster revealed the word non-verbal spells, he literally made a highpitched "Yes!" sound which he quickly disguised as a cough because he wasn't THAT excited. But in reality he was. He had been trying master non-verbal spells ever since Jessa had cleaned his robes with a non-verbal spell in his second year. And had he mentioned that she had been a fifth year at the time? Like...how AWESOME was that?! He might have been her lowkey fanboy when it came to her magical abilities. Which he sadly did not possess naturally. Sigh. Even till this day, the Ravenclaw had not managed a non-verbal spell once which meant he wasn't going to get his picture on a chocolate frog for a special achievement. Double sigh.

He was so lost in his thoughts that he did not even hear the question but what he did heard was the sound of chains. His jaw tightened as he turned around as the Headmaster revealed.....wait what creatures were they? Chained to the wall. Oh good they were chained, good, perfect, keep them there. He wasn't going to set them lose right? Nah, he would never do th---he set them lose didn't he?!

As silence was key, the Ravenclaw held his hand over his mouth before he could have yelped and looked around the room. What was he supposed to do again? He didn't even want to move a muscle let alone get the ball back in to the pit!

She waited for her brother to throw it, but just as he is always an amazing brother he made sure to say exactly when he was throwing the ball, so now she knew it was near her legs and he was doing it now. So she leaned down with more of her arms than anything else to catch it, trying to hear a quiet ball was not something that was possible so of course, it hit her leg before she realized it was close. A small giggle left her with the ball being soft, it was fun and her anxiety of being hit faded away.

She lifted off her blindfold to throw the ball back to him, but the professor was speaking again. "Maybe we can practice later?" She looked at Gunnar before she heard others answering his question. During questions she stayed quiet mostly in fear of being wrong, so she made notes of the answers and nodded as her own brother even said a few things on the matter.

Now they were moving into teams and she would have to try nonverbal spells. What was the Headmaster eating for breakfast, Merlin, this was going to be hard. She watched as others started to give it a go and waited her turn. When it was her turn she lifted her wand and thought about the levitation spell. She had done it often, so she knew the movement well and did so while thinking about the spell.

Watching her though, it looked like she might have been doing nothing but wand movements, because no balls were lifting from the basket at all.

Ooh, not bad, a hit on target. Kaiser grinned to himself - though not too big - and stuck his hands into his pockets as he rocked backwards onto his heels. "Kaiser," he said in response to the Ravenclaw's question. "And you are... D..." Uhhh. "D-something?"

Oh. Right. They had to switch places now. That certainly wiped the grin off of Kaiser's face. But it was only fair, right? Right. Sigh.

Kaiser took the blindfold from the other boy as he approached, then moved over to the other side of the classroom, the side of the human targets. He took a few seconds to get the blindfold on and secure, turned his head from side to side, then stood ready, arms spread slightly out in front of him as though he was about to catch the ball. And maybe he would. He probably wouldn't.

"I am ready."

It was strange being blindfolded in a room with so many other people. She could hear so many different sounds around her and it made it difficult to focus on Indigo's voice, if only for a minute or so. She tried very hard to block out everything else and took a deep breath, waiting for his warning.

Right shoulder. Her right shoulder...okay. Vita flinched as soon as she heard his words, her right shoulder moving back as she leaned to the side to try and avoid the ball. She could feel it brush past her, but it wasn't a direct hit, which she was pleased about. "Okay, ready for the next one." She knew this time around he wouldn't be telling her where he was throwing, so she was already trying to concentrate.

A shiver ran down her spine when the creatures were revealed and Vita felt quite uncomfortable knowing she could've dove trying to avoid a ball and gotten a little too close to them during the mini activity. They definitely didn't look like the friendly sort of creatures you'd want to share a classroom with and she was already looking around the room, wondering who she'd feel safe teaming up with. As a prefect, did she really need to work with the younger snakes?

...hm.

Looking to Indigo, she gestured between them. They could start a team? At least then she'd know there was one person she had faith in by her side.

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

Once loose the creatures moved about the room. They weren’t as rabid as they were a moment ago while the Headmaster spoke, rather, they almost seemed subdued. Despite large, red eyes they had poor vision and their sense of smell was nothing to brag about. Sound drove them and sound they sought.

They moved aimlessly about the room, trying to pick up on even the smallest sound. Lanky limbs propelled them forward in an eerie sort of motion.

One strayed closer to the students, its ears perked and ready to head even the fainted hint of a sound.

Was prey here?

Eni smiled at the headmaster, but you could see the disappointment on her face at her own screw up. She didn't particularly like not being correct. Even if it is minutely.

Of course there's some freaky creatures are possibly going to attack us! Eni thought to herself and rolled her eyes. Why isn't that a perfectly rational thing to do at Hogwarts? We've experienced much worse! I'm sure no first year will make any noise! Eniola all but glared at anyone close to her as if they had already started screaming to attract those teethed beasts.

Moving over to one of the teams that began to form she looked at another girl and mouthed the words 'Wingardium Leviosa.' to her very slowly and did the wand movement to try and get her to catch on to what she was attempting to do herself.

Having practiced non-verbals over the summer she knew she would have a leg up on some of the other students, but she was by no means the best student in the classroom today. Even if she did have a cozy spot a little higher up than some of them. Focusing on the task at hand she saw one of the balls start to twitch. Not wanting to cause it to drop from just practicing and make a loud noise she undid her tie and put it on the ground instead, deciding to practice with that first so as not to attract any little beasties.

After dozens of tries she saw her tie finally start to float softly higher and higher. Working on not losing her concentration she floated it across the room and back before she was willing to start working on floating the balls. This will be decidedly harder, I'm sure. She thought as she grimaced and practiced a few more dozen times before the ball began to lift...

Indigo didn't want to throw the ball at Vita again, which he knew wasn't the point of the activity at all but she was his friend and he felt extremely guilty even though he knew this was what he was supposed to be doing. What he decided to do was throw the ball back at the exact same place he had just thrown it, toward her right shoulder. All she'd have to do was make the exact same movement she had just made to avoid it, if she was able to guess that he was throwing it in the same place. His plan had been to make it easier for her to avoid it, but he wasn't sure if it would play out according to his plan.

Looking to Indigo, she gestured between them. They could start a team? At least then she'd know there was one person she had faith in by her side.

When the creatures were suddenly revealed, Indigo jumped. He moved even closer to Vita, instinctively grabbing onto her hand and squeezing it. Those things were a bit scary, and the fact that they were going to attack anything that made any noise made them even worse. What he really wanted to do right now was just leave, but when class had started the door had disappeared so he literally couldn't leave.

He tried to ground himself and think rationally to help keep himself calm. All he had to do was get a ball into a hoop without making any noise. He could do that. If there was one thing Indigo could do it was stay silent. Plus, he was kind of excited that they could use nonverbals. He had been working on them for a bit now and was feeling fairly confident in his ability to do simple spells nonverbally. So he actually wasn't as anxious as he could be about this whole situation. He glanced over at Vita and nodded at her gesture. Of course he wanted to be on their team. He gave her sort of a questioning look, trying to silently ask what the game plan was. It was too bad he didn't know sign language.

The question that Trent had asked was one he didn't know he could add anything to. Did he know a lot about non-verbals? Not really. And he didn't think he could say anything that anyone else had said so, he stayed silent. Silent was okay. Silent was good.

He listened as the man mentioned why it was a good idea to work on non-verbals - something he was sure he wasn't going to need anytime soon because, well, he was only a third year. Non-verbals were far, far, far into the-

WHAT WERE THOSE?!

Lucas froze. No. No no no no no. There were scary creatures who looked like they wanted to EAT him and they were standing there the entire time? Hidden in plain sight? This was NOT okay. He suddenly felt very unsafe in this room and wanted to run away but he couldn't seem to tear his eyes away from the creatures. The one who were yanking on the chains while the Headmaster spoke.

And was he listening to the Headmaster's words? Not really. He vaguely picked up some key phrases - about teams, sensitive to noise - but his brain wasn't comprehending these phrases properly. Why? Because Lucas Sebastian Dakest was in panic mode.

Full PANIC mode.

Everything was loud, even if no one was talking or making a sound. He could hear the quick THUMPTHUMPTHUMP of his heartbeat, and the sound of his breath as he tried to breathe normally. But that wasn't all: his palms had started to sweat again and he suddenly found that there was very little air in the room. Could he run? Could he go and find Emma somewhere?

Was he regretting not listening to Trent earlier? He was. He would like nothing more than to run out, scream, and deal with this later but that wasn't an option. And he didn't want to deal with it. Ever. Eyes wide, he watched closely as one seemed to walk closer to him - or closer than he would've liked. He tried not to make a sound, even if every part of his being was screaming right now. He was trying. He really was.

But then he whimpered.
