Default DADA Lesson 1 - Hold It Right There

The first Defense lesson of the term takes place in classroom A1. If you've hit the music hall, you've gone too far.

Today, the classroom looks well put together--as most everything at Beauxbatons seems to be. Tidy walls, organized work sections, a neat pile of books on the Headmaster's desk. The points of interest today are the box shaped objects placed on each set of desks. The desks themselves are pushed together, housing 4 seats per group and each desk has its own box, covered by a magnificent length of light blue satin cloth...very obviously borrowed.

On the board, there is a sign asking you not to touch the boxes or the satin sheets. Kindly obey said instructions and we can begin the lesson amicably.

The wide windows to the left of the classroom allow the warm mid morning sun into the room. If you haven't already somehow managed to wake up in all this time, the bright light from the outside world should do the trick.

Headmaster Trent stands by his own desk, getting in some last minute reading and prep. Occasionally, he makes a scribble or two in the book he holds but he's present enough to return greetings and keep an eye out to ensure that one rule on the board is adhered to.

OOC: Welcome to the first DADA lesson of the term!! Don't forget to read the classroom rules before posting. I'll have the first question up in 24-28 hours

The lesson hasn't started yet

Avalon nearly gasped as she removed the piece of cloth to reveal six adorable yellow bunnies. They were SO cute! And she needed to pet them! But before her hand made it to the cage, it burst open and the bunnies swarmed out. She turned to Alex and Analiese. "Let's catch those bunnies!" she exclaimed with a grin, pulling out her wand. Mumbling the incantation a few times for practice, her eyes scanned the room for the yellow bunnies. As soon as she spotted one, she pointed her wand at it. "Colloshoo!" No such luck. The spell worked for a split second, but the second that Avalon made a move to pick it up, the bunny got away.

Ooo! There was another one! Without a second thought, she aimed and shouted the incantation. The bunny stopped in its tracks...long enough this time for her to scoop it up and place it back into the cage. "Quick! Get that one!" she said to her group as she noticed a yellow blur hopping toward the steps. One down, five to go.

To both girls, she asked, “What about if we all work on the same bunny at the same time? Two of us attempt to stick the bunny and the other grab it if neither of the spells work? Of course we shouldn’t try to hit the bunny at the same time in case the spell’s too much for it.” It was just a plan but if either of them had something better, she was willing to listen.

Unfortunately for Claudine, her first spell had completely missed the rabbit she had been aiming for. The little creatures were so fast that she was sure the Headmaster had purposely done something to increase the speed of the not-so-real-bunnies. Speaking of him… “Does the group who’ve captured all of their bunnies get a prize, Headmaster?’’

Oh, there was a pink bunny. Claudine aimed her wand as it hopped, hopped, hopped. “Colloshoo.’’ It was a neat miss. “Colloshoo.” Another miss. “Colloshoo.’’ This time, the pink bunny stuck in place. “Quickly, someone grab it.’’ She was a bit further from it and didn’t trust her spell work to hold for long.

That was a valid question. This seemed like a lot of work without there being some sort of incentive. Maybe house points? No homework? A break? This was exhausting.

Oh! Claudine hit one! Gemma quickly ran to grab the bunny. The avid animal lover held the fake bunny close to her chest as she carried it back to the cage. Once she was sure it was safe and secured she scanned the room for more pink rabbits.

"Phoebe, I think I spot one over there! Come with me so we can try to conner it!" Gemma slowly made her way around the room, trying not to spook the rabbit.

Oh! Phoebe grinned in response to the correction to her pronunciation, although she wasn't sure she'd gotten it straight even yet. Col-lo-shoe. Colloshoooooo? She was still pondering it when Claudine mentioned working together and they caught their first bunny.

Yes! Working together! Two to shoo and one to grab. "We should stick ahead of where the bunny will be and then try to chase it toward the sticky," Phoebe suggested as she followed Gemma toward the pink bunny. "I think you should cast and I should chase. I don't know if you know this, but I'm not very subtle."

In fact, she was already spooking the rabbits nearest to her, although none were pink. "Cast ahead of us! I'll chase!" She spotted a pink bunny and made chase.

Alexandre was the smarter one here, there was no doubt about that. His plan sounded a lot more thought out than whatever it was that Lucas had in mind. He nodded at that, a smile spreading across his face. "Sounds like a plan." Maybe he was the one who should be in charge here. Or was in charge. Really, the Gryffindor would like that a lot more.

Speaking of Gryffindors, Cece was....... energetic. And adorable. The part about making sure Trent knew they could do the spell? Yeah, adorable. And she even started demonstrating, which only led him to be taken-aback. Uhhhh?? How was she brave enough to do...... that?! To prove that she couldn’t do it?

He was confused. He was really confused.

"Great attempt, though," Especially since she was a first year and this was her first Defence class. "Just remember that it only has os. Colloshoo." But she got it. Or she would get it, he was sure of it.

Lucas started taking his wand out, and even rolling up his sleeves just as the other first year (Bernadette) joined them. And, not too long afterwards, there was a sudden ZOOOOOOOM of orange that only made him JUMP backwards and away from the bunny that had sped past.

Merlin oh merlin.

To make matters worse, the girl (Bernadette) was casting spells. This wasn’t the bad part, it was the part where she started being LOUD about it. Yeaaaaaaaah, this was a bad idea. This was a really bad idea. An energetic first year and a loud first year? In one group?? This was almost his idea of a nightmare.

But she was still casting and trying and for that, he was giving her a, "Great job! Especially on the multiple spells." What was her name again? He had no idea.

Right. Spell. Come on, Dakest. He held up his wand, almost close to eye level and started moving it around towards the nearest zooms of orange he could find. It was hard with the number of colours that were zooming around but orange was bright, y’know? It was difficult to miss. So this was supposed to be-

"Colloshoo!" Did it hit? "COLLOSHOO!" Run run run!

Default white rabbites - 3 bunnies captured
Lovely™ | Captain Hurted | Ariana's Bane | Resident Antagonist | Unparalleled Delight

Kaiser was very much aware of the other groups in the room who were actually properly uniting to work as a team to catch their rabbits. He supposed the idea had some merit, but he was personally much more comfortable with the prospect of everyone at their table doing their own thing. He was satisfied to note that Alessandro seemed to be on the same page as he was in that sense.

Divide and catch the bunnies conquer.

There were now four white rabbits out there, waiting to be captured. Or, well, not waiting at all, but leaping madly around the room probably looking for some kind of escape.

Kaiser was lucky with his next find. One of the rabbits - which just so happened to be another white one, and apparently not particularly bright - was attempting to run up one of the slides that had been magicked into the room. He watched it for a moment, half-wondering if it would manage to make it to the top, before deciding it was probably a better idea to take advantage of the animal while it was being impeded. He took aim and fired off another spell.//

"Colloshoo." ... which sailed right over it. Whoops. Nobody saw that. He quickly tried again before the rabbit processed what had happened and made a bid for escape. "Colloshoo."

That time he got it, and the rabbit was stuck fast to the slide. Wading through the gradually thinning sea of leporids, Kaiser got hold of his catch, cancelled the spell it was under, and brought the creature back to the cage.

Alexandre waved at the new girl when she did actually join them. Okay, this was perfect! Everything was working out, and everybody seemed to be good with the plan. He was only slightly alarmed when Cece pointed her wand at her own feet, but he supposed it didn't matter since she didn't even say the incantation right. "It's colloshoo," he said helpfully. "But maybe don't try it on your own feet in case it does work." He didn't know how to reverse the spell, and he really didn't want to tell the headmaster that a first years feet were stuck to the ground.

Oh, were they ready? GO. Alexandre tried to keep an eye on both the bunnies and the two casting the spell. He wanted to not let the bunnies get too far away, and be close to where they were aiming so he could snatch them right away. He glanced toward Cece to see how she was doing and almost tripped right over a bunny that had frozen in his path. He wasn't sure who's spell had done it but it was stuck. He quickly snatched it up and brought it back over to their box. "I got one!"

But maybe the blasting curse would work to temporarily get away. Whew...there finally done with her notes at last.

Stella's sky blue eyes settled on the bunnies in front of them, there were so many of them! Holding back a squeal at how cute they were she gotten out her wand. Looking at the light blue bunnies, she looked at Rylee and nodded. "Good idea, it'll go by faster that way, I'll capture the bunnies!" Putting her wand back in its holster fof now, she had some bunny catching to do.
Rylee grinned at her friend. Stella was offering to do some bunny catching first while Dorian and herself probably took turns casting the spell at them. "Great! We got this!" If the three of them worked well together... and she knew for a fact that she worked really well with each of them independently, they shouldn't have any trouble.

She was a Quidditch player. Her reflexes had be fast in order to play well. Listening to one another and following her group members direction at times was all part of this. Alright... so it wasn't entirely the same as flying through the air and using a bat to whack at bludgers but it was similar. It was something like being a Seeker or a Chaser. Two positions she also knew how to play.

Twirling her wand between her fingers, Rylee shifted her gaze slowly around the room. "Ready?," she asked her friends waiting for their replies before doing anything else. "Do you see any?!"

Ah-ha! A light blue bunny over there close to one of the holes in the wall. Raising her wand she quickly created the boot like movement in the air while calling out, "Colloshoo!". Where it hit she wasn't entirely sure. Probably the spot where the bunny had been, for now it was gone having darted into the hole like it knew what she was trying to do. "Almost had that one!"

There was a streak of light blue again. The ginger lioness had seen it out the corner of her eye. Whirling around quickly, her wand still at the ready she cast 'Colloshoo' much faster this time. "Stella be ready!," she warned the slightly younger lioness.

Had she managed to cast the spell fast enough? Was the bunny a blue one? Would Stella be able to capture it before the spell wore off and it got away? Yes, yes and she hoped so!

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

The Ravenclaw's concern was...admittedly somewhat endearing. A bit less on the practical side for a Ravenclaw but endearing all the same. "You've got nothing to worry about on that account." He assured. These bunnies would not flinch or mimic pain. It was an unnecessary addition to its behaviour that would have only served to unsettle some of the students--a point well proven with Gladin despite it not being a thing. He could only imagine how much more of an issue it would have become if he had shell shocked bunnies all over.

His gaze shifted to the young Slytherin (Claudine). Get something? For practicing a spell? Hardly.

"The joy of knowing you've successfully returned all rabbits to their cages. Quite the reward if you ask me. The accomplishment. The pride." The fact it was only practice and the real stuff was what counted for the man. Something she'd come to learn in time. Practice was its own reward. You got better when you did it.

"Finish up with those rabbits then gather 'round." He announced. Any that were not in the next few minutes would simply be vanished. They all would, but you got the idea.

"Now that you've had a bit of time to be practicing colloshoo, tell me some of the disadvantages you've picked up on. What are some of the problems you could easily see yourself running into should this be your choice of defense?"

OOC: Doing great everyone! The second question has been posted. You can still do last minute bunny catching as the Headmaster is allowing them time to finish up but please do respond to the question. I'll be back to move this class on again in about 22 hrs or so. ^^

Aww, they'd caught one! "GOOD JOB!" Bernadette cheered for her Ravenclaw teammate. No idea about names here, but she was having fun working with the older students. "COLLOSHOO!" She continued casting spells as as saw another orange rabbit, hoping that Cece (did she go by that? Could Bernie call her that anyway?) would catch them.

"Thank you," she replied to the Gryffindor boy as well. She WAS doing a good job. But it seemed like they'd just started the activity and here it was already ending. Awwwww! Bernie frowned and crossed her arms, wand still at the ready, as the professor spoke.

Hmm, what could go wrong with this spell? "You could accidentally cast it on yourself," she answered honestly, thinking of her classmate who had just tried that.

Freyr decided to think about Professor's question while catching the 4 remaining green rabbits. He realized that with other desks catching theirs, the hunt was actually easier. Or Freyr was getting better, he preferred to believe this. He "colloshoe"d one green rabbit after another and after a couple of minutes, all green rabbits were again in the box. He was exhausted but it was so fun that he felt like he could catch another 6 of these hyperactive rabbits.

Then he raised his hand and said "It's very effective to immobilize the opponent, but as it just immobilizes the opponent, the user of the spell is still invulnerable to the spells that would come from the opponent. Therefore, compared to a spell that could completely prevent the opponent's movement, it is not preferable. Also, as it is seen, it is difficult to hit a target that is moving very fast, against which this spell would provide the maximum advantage. However, I think that it is very useful for a quick advantage while running from something or someone. I would choose this spell if the chaser was not this fast which would make it difficult to aim."

It was REAL nice how the older Gryffindor and Ravenclaw were trying to give her magic tips and Cecelia was SOAKING all their kind words in as best she could, only a lot little distracted but the adorable rainbow fluff balls darting here and there and everywhere. She mouthed the incantation to herself, making sure to accentuate her Os so they could SEE, and then gave them a BIG thumbs up. "Got it! THANKS!"

Also. ALSO. This was SO MUCH FUN!

Cecelia ran from one place to another, trying to track the orange bunnies and call out to her teammates when she singled them out. She was giggling a lot, too, 'specially 'cause that Bernadette was casting spells so so so fast and it made her words jumble together in a silly way that you couldn't HELP but giggle at. She VERY much liked this team, she did. She ALSO liked how Alexandre had caught one of the bunnies, causing Cece to raise her arms in the air triumphantly and give a little WOOP to anyone who was listening. He was a good chaser!

SHE got to catch a bunny, too, though she wasn't sure WHO had stuck it to the floor. It could've even been HER, 'cause she'd been practicing while she was running around and it was POSSIBLE that MAYBE one of her spells had worked. MAYBE. Who KNEW?

She cast a few MORE times, just trying to do her part, when the Headmaster went and said it was time to wrap things up. She was definitely sad the activity was ending, but she DID move closer so she could hear what the man was saying.

"It's kinda hard to cast one something that's moving around. Like, you've gotta be real good at aiming and concentrate a bunch, and the person trying to get you would probably use that to his or her advantage."

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Usually, Claudine resented working with anyone but she found it was different when it came to these girls. Maybe it was the fact that they were all first years. “We did great,’’ she said to Gemma and Phoebe and tossing in one of her rare, huge smiles. “That’s a great idea,’’ Claudine agreed with a nod to Phoebe after listening to the plan. “I think I’ll try that too.’’ While the girls targeted another rabbit, the Snkette sought out a pink bunny. “Colloshoo.’’ The ground was stickied and all that was left to do was to chase a rabbit towards that patch of ground. But then she gazed at the Headmaster. Of course there was no other reward. She had firmly established that Trent was no fun. She gave him a shrug and was left to ponder the next question.

“What she said.’’
Claudine inclined her head towards Cecelia. “We’d also have the disadvantage if our opponents are as fast as these bunnies.”

Yeaaaaaah, this was chaos.

But for some wild reason, Lucas was excited as he watched the two take off. He should be trying to stop more bunnies in their paths but his eyes wandered over to see how Alexandre was doing, just in time to see the Ravenclaw with a small orange bunny in his hands. Wow, that was fast. Was he really a Chaser? "Well done!" Smile!

It was a little funny to see Cece trying to spell out for herself while she ran. A little funny and a little...... confusing? Why was she doing that? For practice? Or was she trying them on her own feet again? Or did she not trust them?

Which...... well.

All thoughts about that were driven out of his mind when he saw that she also had an orange bunny with her. "Well done!" And if they had two, that meant that the roles were supposed to be switched. Did the other girl know that? Had she heard their plan? Lucas turned to her (Bernadette) and started, "We did it! Now we just need to swi-"

Or not.

As soon as Trent started speaking, the fourth year stopped. Maybe this wasn't the time, then. And if he was asking questions, then they were moving on, which then meant that he didn't need to do any running around of his own. He wasn't going to show it but he was silently pleased about this little fact. Thank you, Trent. Really.

What were some of the disadvantages? Well, the two first years in his group had good answers for that. But his mind was going to the situation Trent had said before and trying to think of an answer that matched that. He didn't know how long passed by but eventually, his hand found itself up in the air. "Well, you're supposed to be running as well, right? They're chasing you, you're running away...... Trying to cast a spell over your shoulder while still running away sounds difficult. It sounds like you might end up sticking something else to the ground." Pause. "And you might end up running into something." Which sounded painful.

Kaiser was still scanning the room for his next white rabbit target when Trent signalled that the activity was more or less over. Right when he'd spotted a flash of white, of course; ain't that just the way.

Well, he'd said to finish up, which meant that Kaiser could at least take advantage of this opportunity. With more bunnies were in cages, there was less chance of hitting the wrong target and accidentally helping another group out. But it also meant that there was more space for the animals to run free, ergo they were less impeded, ergo they were even faster and more slippery than before.

Kaiser had his wand aimed at this one wily wabbit for a good thirty seconds, tracking it as it hopped madly through the classroom, not tiring even for a second. A couple of times he started the spell - "Coll-" wait "Collo-" waaaait "C-" hang on "Collosh-" nope "Co-" not yet - but ultimately decided to wait on actually casting until he could get a good shot.

Until finally, finally, the rabbit cornered itself for the briefest of moments. In the split second it took to do a turn itself around and make as though to leap away, Kaiser struck. "Colloshoo."

Got him. Er... her? ... It. Nice. Once again, Kaiser went over to retrieve the animal, cancelling the spell on it before returning it to the cage. He supposed he could try to help grab the last two, but he didn't think getting all of them really mattered too much, so he abandoned the task and joined the group around Trent.

That was a nice, easy question too. Kaiser half-raised his hand. Only half because he was being lazy tired.

"If you are trying to get more than one target, like the rabbits, the others have a chance to attack you while you are focused on the first one." Not a problem with the bunnies, of course, but in the general sense it could be an issue.

They did it! Phoebe did a happy dance as they put their pink bunny back into its crate. It was nice working with Gemma and Claudine - they listened to her ideas and shared their own, and then... success! Plus Claudine was grinning like her face would fall off.

At the professor's next question, Phoebe raised her hand and wiggled a little in excitement. "If what is chasing you has wings or you're in water... basically, if there's nothing for them to stick to, then the spell won't work."

Gunnar might have been biding his time with the activity, but it wasn't because he minded it. It seemed straightforward and easy enough - cast a stickfast hex at a rabbit, then retrieve it and return it to its cage. But it was also absolute and utter chaos in the room with so many rabbits running every which way and the entire class chasing them and shooting spells, with more than a few of them wayward. And Gunnar wasn't a fan of chaos.

But he still wanted to participate, so he simply waited until some of the chaos died down and most of the rabbits had been captured before making a move himself. Colloshoo was an easy enough spell, though he didn't exactly run after the rabbit in his sights. He did make his way after it though, dodging a few people in his way, and was pleased to see his aim was accurate enough to stop the rabbit in its tracks. Just on time too, since Trent was calling them to attention again.

Gunnar retrieved his stuck rabbit and carried it over to the cage, thinking over the question. He had an answer... or two... but they were quickly answered by classmates. Once he had secured the captured rabbit, he raised his hand. "It's not the most effective spell for defense," he began, for the reasons a few people already mentioned. "You didn't disarm your opponent... Though I suppose it would be effective if it were used in combination with another spell," he added thoughtfully.

You could accidentally cast i--what?

Malachi shot the Gryffindor an openly confused look as she offered up her response. The wand movement alone should have made that quite a difficult and deliberate act.

"I...how...I mean.....if you worked really hard and were determined to be caught...I suppose...." No, really, what? "We...we've got training dummies in the arena, should you ever decide...you...y'know...." Under the complete assumption she was talking about herself and had managed to get herself stuck. Gryffindors tended to speak from experience.

SPOILER!!: Njordson
[QUOTE=Freyr;12427629]Freyr decided to think about Professor's question while catching the 4 remaining green rabbits.

[/QUOTE

"Correct." The Headmaster commended. "Good thinking. The opponent would most certainly still have their wands free to retaliate meaning you haven't truly reduced your level of danger. Similarly, anything too quick will be able to easily avoid such a tactic."

A more promising response after that last one...

"Right. Again, speed does make this spell less than advantageous. Get caught up by something fast enough and you'll have trouble just getting to aim while you try to escape. In those circumstances, it's certainly best to employ a different tactic." One that wouldn't get you eaten.

Rabbits weren't going to become a deadly menace any time soon but there were far worse things out there and some of them were faster without any sort of magical enhancement.

Malachi nodded.

"Yes and an even bigger problem should whatever chases you be faster than these rabbits. At that point, I wouldn't advise trying to cast many spells at it. Your chances of a solid hit will be significantly reduced. Better to focus on proper defense or retreat if it came to that."

Sometimes, standing to fight just wasn't an option.

"Excellent point, Dakest." And no, the man hadn't missed the way he was choosing to help the younger among the group. It was commendable. The sort of thing that made the Headmaster proud. It was a good look on the boy that tended to favour running and hiding to actual defense.

"It can be asking a bit too much when trying to use this spell while running. There are a tremendous amount of things that could go wrong--tripping and falling becomes a real risk in the middle of all that chaos."

Not to mention some of the points his classmates had mention about the speed of the pursuer further complicating things.

SPOILER!!: Kaiser

"Another good point, yes. You can easily become overpowered depending on the number of pursuers. Eventually, it would prove more beneficial to remove yourself entirely rather than attempt to take them all on alone. If you think you've got the power and skill...you could make an attempt....but the smartest wizards know when to call it in and beating a hasty retreat."

There truly was no shame in running when it was called for. Dakest wasn't always wrong. Indeed, sometimes it paid to be somewhere else if things got exceptionally bad. Everyone had limits to their capabilities and once that limit was hit...if the opponent still had more to give....it was over.

Not the sort of faith he wanted for any of his students.

The students were on a roll. Always a proud moment for the man when they dug deep inside their brains and came up with proper, thought provoking responses.

"You're absolutely right. If whatever's chasing you isn't on the ground or any other surface, there's really nothing the spell can do. It would be a waste of a shot and could draw you closer to being captured."

"You're right about that, McCarthy. Even if you manage to cast the spell effectively, you haven't managed to ensure the opponent can't simply cast back at you. In fact, should they disarm you, they could then free themselves and be free to deal with you. Always best to disarm if you can. Reduce the dangers where possible."

He hoped they were all taking notes. It would prove useful later on in the school year.

"I like what I'm hearing. It tells me, for the most part, you've been making assessments of the spell as you work and more or less understand its limitations. To be clear, even after you cast successfully, you still haven't disarmed your attacker. If the attacker is particularly quick, your chances of landing a successful shot are drastically reduced. Spells that properly take the pursuer out of commission should always be prioritized unless there's a chance to make a safe exit, in which case that may be the best option. There are of course exceptions. Aurors, for instance, aren't trained to retreat unless absolutely necessarily, but for the average witch or wizard, there's no need to remain at risk if you can change that. Most things aren't worth risking your life."

Being a hero was cool. Living was also cool. Making smart choices was very much the coolest.

Malachi took a moment to remove the rabbits. Each vanished into a thin puff of coloured smoke. The rocks were then collected and stored away for the next time his lesson required creatures.

"Let's move on to the main activity. For this, I'd like you all to forget the groups you were previously in. Now, there should only be two teams. For simplicity, they'll be the purple and orange teams. If you know anything about the muggle game freeze tag, this should be an easy concept for you." Relatively easy even if they hadn't. "In these teams, you will use the stickfast hex to stick your opponents in place. You can use anything in this room as cover and shield charms are of course an option if you can cast them." As he hadn't removed the obstacles. "Anywhere is fair game, even the walls." Courtesy of another set of charms. They'd be able to run up and down them with ease. "Rules. You can't unstick yourself, even if you know the counter charm. Your teammate must unfreeze you. The team with the most "frozen" students loses. The winners will be exempt from the first homework of the school year."

Just a little extra incentive. It was all information that would be covered in the following class and easily something that didn't need to be homework but was.

"If there are no questions, find your teams then you can begin."

OOC: Time for the main and final activity of the lesson! In groups, freeze the other team. Note, you cannot decide if another person's character gets stuck. You can take aim but it's up to the other RPer to decide if it lands. You all have until September 14. Have fun! I'll be around IC and OOC in case anything comes up.

Freyr walked to one side of the class, decided to be in the Purple Team said to his classmates "Orange Team, here I come!" He started to wait for the first classmate to choose the Orange Team. He was ready and he was already having fun. He tried to remember his cousins' duels and their protection spells.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

There were so many good points regarding the disadvantage of this spell. Claudine hoped that she would remember most if not all of them so that she’d be able to make notes. Better yet, it would be a thrill if Trent provided them with handouts like Beryl did. Somehow, she got the feeling that wasn’t to be with this lesson. For the moment, she was disappointed that she had to leave the group she had been working with. Darn it… this new group was going to be even bigger.

Claudine knew nothing about this game of freeze tag that Muggles played but she understood the rules that Trent explained. “Orange team.’’ She moved opposite of the other first year (Freyr) and eyed the other students, particularly Gemma and Pheobe. She’d have liked them to be on the Orange team too but if they thought differently, then that was fine.

Cecelia was on team orange the FIRST time around, so she felt she MUST spread her talent and join the PURPLE TEAM now! With a grin and SALUTE to her former teammates, the first year let out an impressive, "Purple Team Unite!" This came with a super hero pose and EVERYTHING before the small blonde...took cover, obviously! She was still LEARNING the spell! The BEST spot for her was behind a BIGGER KID on her team so she could cast spells and STILL be safe!

Okay, ORANGE team with Claudine. Yep... nope. What was Cece doing over there on the Purple team? Didn't she know that orange was the best? "Psst, Cece? You don't get me, and I don't get you. Okay?"

This was going to be FUN, though. They'd stick each other to walls and the floor and run around until someone unstuck them. Wait, though... how did they unstick? What was the spell for that? And she hadn't actually cast the sticking spell successfully the first time. So. Like. "I don't know any spells!" It just occurred to her, but she was a sitting duck. Or a sticking lion. "I DON'T KNOW ANY SPELLS." Time to panic.

Too bad that Avalon didn't know any shield charms yet. She was fairly certain that they were supposed to learn them at some point during her second year. It would a lot easier to avoid these stickfast hexes if she could throw up a good 'Protego.' The young Ravenclaw jotted down a few more notes on her parchment before joining some first years on the purple team. It was her favorite color, after all. Hopefully some older students that knew about shield charms would join them. For now, she'd have to focus on perfecting her aim and dodging spells. She peered around the classroom, trying to scope out potential spots for ducking before the activity began.

Gemma quietly moved over to join the orange team and her friends teammates. This was going to be interesting. Most of the class seemed to be first-years who didn't really know any spells. Hopefully some of the older students would end up joining the Orange team.

She looked at Claudine and Phoebe maintaining a whisper to ask, "How much defensive and offensive magic do you guys know how to cast?" Casting this new spell shouldn't be too hard. Especially since her opponents wouldn't be charmed to go as fast as those bunnies, right? Oh dear this was going to be a disaster.

Freeze tag? Never heard of it. But that was okay, because Kaiser was fairly certain he was following the concept. Better than all of the rest of the lecture, anyway, but that was more because his brain was just struggling to translate. What was new there?

Resisting the urge to unstick himself was going to be the hardest part, Kaiser figured. He didn't like being trapped in any way, shape, or form. It wasn't a phobia or anything, he just really didn't like it.

Being exempt from homework, though? Kaiser was absolutely on board with that. So, if his team could please win, that would be great.

Speaking of, Kaiser went ahead and randomly drifted towards one group of gathered students, which happened to be the orange team. He was reasonably content with his choice, and had just started wondering if he should get started, when he heard Plant-Licker's alarmed declaration.

Ah. Well. That was certainly a drawback. "Try 'Finite' if you need to unstick someone," he advised her, hoping he didn't sound too much like he knew what he was doing or she and the other first years might start thinking he could help them in other classes too. And he couldn't. He really couldn't. "Just... point your wand and say it and think very hard about the person unsticking." Maybe that would be enough for her to make the spell work? Maybe. Doubtful, but maybe.

As for the actual shoe-sticking part, maybe he could lead by example. Could they start? Kaiser was going to start.

Looking over at the other team, he spied one of the eager looking first years. One that wasn't hiding behind another student, at least. He raised his wand as sneakily as he could, and fired the spell at the first year (Freyr). "Colloshoo."

Well, someone had to be the first to cast, right?

There was something kind of odd about casting spells on innocent rabbits just to get them back into their cages. If anything, Carys had felt awfully bad sticking their poor feet to the ground, but then watching them poof into smoke was just that much more awkward. Given everything they’d gone through last term with the mist and everything, the unknown was proving to be an awkward spot for the fourth year. Although, funnily enough, the main activity didn’t seem quite as strange to her. Her only question was if they were banned from just taking off their shoes if they’d been targeted. It made sense to her, considering the spell wasn’t directed at their feet, specifically. They all had shoes on, unlike the bunnies.

Either way, her main deciding factor in choosing which of the two teams to join was moot, considering in all her consideration she hadn’t noticed which team either her sister or her cousin had picked. Nor any of the others she particularly trusted with protecting her, which meant she was on her own as she headed over to join the orange team. If anything, she figured, maybe it would be a weird training skill when it came to her chaser ability. Avoiding spells couldn’t be any harder than avoiding a bludger, right?

Plus, she was pretty good with defensive spells.

Just like that, bunny catching was over. Somewhere between all the darting around and trying to capture the bunnies to return them to their cage, Rylee had lost count in how many her team had actually successfully captured. Luckily it didn't much seem to matter right now.

Oooooh, a game of freeze tag! Now this was going to be fun! Without any thought about it she made her way over to the PURPLE team. It was her favorite color if she had to choose one and still at sixteen she managed to wear something that was purple each and everyday. Today's item being a purple ribbon that was braided into a bit of her hair. Not that it was important for this task but who knew... maybe it was? No, really it wasn't.

There wasn't much time for chatter buuuuuuut... in order for them to do well they needed to know how to protect themselves. "Anyone need help with casting the Shield Charm or Finite? Finite can used to end the Sticking Hex." That being said removed her wand from it's holster on her wrist and quickly tossed up a 'Protego' around herself and whoever on her team was closest to herself for the moment.
