Default DADA Lesson - 1 Don't Go Into the Light

It's the first official day of school and the first class at that. Hopefully you took Trent's advise and got yourself some sleep. As the notice stated, you should be properly attired for the practical lesson.

The corridor leading to classroom 104 is quite bright, and the grounds outside the windows appear to be awakening at this relatively early point in the morning. This is a stark contrast to the inside of the classroom. Once you enter, you'll immediately notice that it's no longer nearly 8 am. Indeed, the inside of the classroom depicts a slightly cloudy, night sky.

That's not the only thing strange about the classroom, the setting is void of any desks or chairs. Nothing about the room looks like a classroom, it doesn't look like a room at all but a bog of sorts. It's a dark "night" as the moon is currently being obscured by a cloud with no intention of going anywhere, but Headmaster Trent can be found not too far from the door, lantern in hand, while he waits for the students to come in.

Step lively, there's a full lesson ahead.

OOC: Welcome to the first lesson of the term everyone!! Don't forget to read the classroom rules before posting. I'll have the first question up in 24 hours

The lesson hasn't started yet

CLASS HAS BEGUN!

Class progression:
- Replies
- Replies and Question 1
- Question 2 + walking
- Start of Mini-Activity: Get in boats
- Mini-Activity: Follow the light
- Mini-Activity: You get a light and you get a light
- Main Acitivity: Practical

Uh oh.

They were venturing out on boats, and Aaron found himself only slightly nervous about it... He wasn't the best swimmer, but they were being assured nothing would (could?) damage these boats. Magic was funny like that...

Moving quickly, the Hufflepuff considered those already loaded into the various boats. These were just ferrying them to the activity...so really it didn't matter whose he crashed, right? His eyes continued to dance over all his classmates, most still obscured by darkness. Luckily, the man seemed to take note of this and juiced up his flame a bit... Ah, that was much better!

Aaron all but slung himself into the boat with his cousin (Abra) the Slytherin Prefect (Natalie), and another Slytherin kid (Gunnar) he didn't actually know. It was a no-brainer.

"Hey, guys!" His joyous tone did not match the class aesthetic of doom and gloom.

Torii froze when the Headmaster abruptly announced that they were 'here'. Here as in...where? What was out there?! She was instantly on alert, and again, she wished she could draw her wand out her holster. Being at a new school, with a new Headmaster, with new students that she had no amount of developed trust in yet...was intimidating. I mean, who were these people? Basically, she could be walking herself to her death and never see it coming.

She peered around a few heads and saw a river. Great. A hinkeypunk-infested river, no doubt. At least their supposed attackers were one-legged. Surely she could take on something with only one leg. Thoughts were running through her mind like roller coasters. Wait a minute. FIREBALLS?! Why had she not really that one tiny detail?! Her eyebrows now widened, she slooooowly turned to see the boats revealed by the Headmaster. He wanted them to...get in the water? In the WATER?! She tried to remember to breathe as she watched the Headmaster board a boat. Well, if they could only fit five at a time in the boat, she was going with HIM! Torii started to dash out from the crowd, but stopped when the Headmaster floated on out into the water.

Well, THANKS FOR WAITING.

On that note, she was finding an older student to ride with. Let's see...let's see... Oh, hey--look! A Gryffindor girl who looked close to seventh year or so! [ZORYN SPINNET] Torii was riding with HER. She'd know how to save them if something terrible happened, wouldn't she? Torii stepped into the boat, skipping the polite hello's. Was this even the time?

"Hello. No, we don't mind," The sixth year said to the younger girl who took up the last spot in their boat. Was it rude to speak for the group? Vita hoped not and honestly, speaking up for anyone but herself was a rarity. It was just...she was glad to be one step closer to getting a move on. Indigo looked about as thrilled as she did to be on the water, but they'd get through this okay. The headmaster himself had told them not to worry so look at her, not worrying over here... ... ...yeah.

Picking up one of the oars, the sixteen year old positioned it over the water and waited for the okay to get going. "Anyone ever steered a boat before?" Because she most certainly had not.

"U-Uh... C-can i?" Was he even supposed to be asking? It seemed rude not to.
It hadn’t escaped his notice that a few students had wanted to join his boat. Amusing but not allowed. Brownie points to them for thinking about it in the first place though.

Something else that hadn’t escaped his notice? A first year attempting to join a full boat.

“Find another. It won’t carry six.” Why he thought it was okay when he said it wasn’t was beyond him.

And another first year that decided to ignore his warning regarding the capacity of the boats. The same boat too. That would have made seven.

”You too. There are several boats still available. Find another one, this one is full.”

As he could clearly see by just looking at it.

OOC:Still plenty of time to settle on a boat. Just remember, the boats will only carry five. Currently, Mark, Stella and Ewan’s boats are at capacity and cannot be joined. Rylee, Steph, Nat and Mary have space in their boats. <3

She’d just ace the practical portions and draw christmas trees in on the multiple choice section and that’d bound to get her at least a passing grade. That’s all that mattered anyways. It’s not like she was going to try to do anything academic in the future. HA. As if.

After what felt like AGES, the Headmaster pointed to boats, gave a whole speech about them and yadda yadda ya.

The seventh year tugged on Cameroni’s arm, in hopes that he’d follow her to a boat.

Going down the line, Zoryn looked at the first boat, ew a first year. “Nope.” Then the next one, which was EQUALLY as disappointing. “NOPE.”

And finally, she stopped at Steph’s boat. “….” She didn’t care much for the girl and hadn’t spoken to her since maybe third year, buuuuuut. “I guess,” she shrugged and stepped inside.

Was he actually safe here with only one Professor even if it was the Headmaster?

He didn't really know what boat to take and some where finally up rather quickly with people. He looked around for friends or really any first years he knew and well nothing so far.

He walked over to the one boat that had two people even if they were a lot older than him inside it.

"Hello, um im Igor"

He said getting into it.

Would be kinda of rude to just get in with them and not say anything. Hopefully they aren't weird or anything. It was the first day of classes and he didn't want to test his luck further.

Hopefully.
Patrick looked around and figured if there was a small chance that he was going to die at least he'd be in the boat with Zoryn because she never let a dull moment occur. He'd die with laughter. He walked up to the boat and looked in counting. He didn't think he counted more than 4 so he figured he was good.

He looked at the first year Igor. He needed to remember that. "Care if I join y'all?" He was more asking Zoryn because he still remembered being a little bit of a pain before when they worked together. But now he had an appreciation for how she handled people. He didn't wait because he heard the headmaster tell others to find a new boat and he wasn't into doing that.

It seems his answer, at least the landmark part of it, got the approval of the headmaster. Septimus made a mental note to keep an eye on any landmarks he could use throughout the class. Something told him they might come in handy given the reaction. And there was also the notes of some of the other stuff that was said and approved, figure not to bother writing down just yet since they were moving on and he didn’t want to get left behind in the magical bog. Not when he was both following the professor and trying to track their movement somewhat.

They were going away from the door…and straight…right?

The questions he left for his classmates to come up with answers as they were just another distraction though he was paying enough attention to hear what he might need. Soon enough they were apparently at their latest point of interest, a body of water large enough for boats. It really was amazing just what could be created when needed. Boats they would now ride in to get further along in their lesson on the smoky hinkypunks and their dangerous lanterns.

Septimus looked around as they started to load boats, debating options once he was near them. Finally he opted into one that had only a first year girl, figuring it was better than leaving her alone. "Hey," he greeted with a polite smile as he settled in, grabbing one of the oars to row.

Ah, hinkypunks. It still sounded SO funny to her ears that she couldn't help but grin every time it was said out loud. Even if they threw fireballs around and hollered over their smoky bodies.

Harri couldn't even be bothered with the dark and squishing wet noise that her shoes made whenever she took a step because hello, this was supposed to be a classroom and not only did they end up in the swamp lands, they were now getting on boats to cross a river. A river! Inside a classroom. It was so cool. Magic was so cool! And the Headmaster too, since you know, he was probably the one who made this all happen.

As for finding a boat to board, the young Gryffindor sort of just loitered around at first until she saw somewhat of a familiar face. One of the Gryffindor's prefects. Hi, Prefect Abra! As for the other three, she didn't know any of them but they all looked to be older. She waved at them and offered a wide smile. "Hi, I'm Harri!" Let's get to rowing!

"Right again." A few of these students were on a roll. She didn't make an attempt at what she was likely to do if she found herself in the situation he presented but the information she was provided was valuable if not standard and with as many first years as there currently were, it would do them some good to get in this sort of knowledge while they still could.

Aaaand the voice was back to normal. Good. He wouldn't have to worry about the poor boy hurting his throat in a vain effort to pull attention from himself. The lot of them had been out of their minds the night before. No one could hold things against him personally.

"Also correct." He replied, paying keen attention to the surroundings. It wasn't because he thought something would jump out at any second, no, he knew when things would jump out. He just didn't want to end up tripping and bringing down a few of them with him inevitably. "It can be a real conflict for some. The desire to help versus the nagging feeling it's only a trap. Not being able to shake that you may have left someone in danger."

"Very true." Not the point he'd been hoping to bring up with the hinkypunks but an interesting one nontheless. "There's a bit of debate there, one I confess I haven't followed too closely regarding the classification of hinkpunks. They're a little harder to nail down. Between terrain and their own form, they can also be a little difficult to tie get a ton of concrete data on." Not from a lack of trying and he didn't suspect they'd stop trying any time soon. The brilliance of research.

...

....

"I.......that's....not where this is going." He almost stopped for that answer, almost did, but remembered the long string of students coming up behind him in the dark with nothing but his lantern for light. A sudden stop may have been quite jarring. "Hopefully you've been paying attention to what your classmates have said. It will prove useful later on."

"Keep the discussion to the topic at hand." He chided, raising the lantern to ensure he got a good look of the bushes he was about to push through. The man had been patiently waiting for the girl to end her conversation she'd started when she arrived but it didn't seem to be happening, so he would end it himself. "Save the non-class chatter for after you've left here."

Wasn't that hard, he promised. "But you're correct. Lumos duo is a good way of stopping them in their tracks for the very reason you've mentioned."

Well.

Yes.

"All wizards should have their wand with them at all times." Yes, he was aware he'd told them all to keep theirs holstered, but it was still with them, ready for use once the time came. "There are a few forgetful ones among us and I have no doubt they have a harder life." He'd accept that answer.

Stuck in the mud, yes. He didn't give verbal comment to the girl's words for the fact he'd already addressed it several times when her classmates brought it up but he would take a crack at the later statement.

"Sticking to the path you were originally on is a sound decision." He agreed. "I would like you to, however, consider a scenario in which the bog is known for lanterns that help travellers. Ones you're meant to be following." He wasn't saying she was wrong, he was simply asking her to consider another angle now that she'd already thought of one.

"Merlin, I thought I was morbid." Jagged rocks and broken necks...and now praying for swift and painless death.

Circe.

"I don't recommend sitting and waiting for death to take you if you've got a choice. This lesson exists to ensure that should you encounter one of these things--or several--you'll be able to handle it."

"You too." He'd already cautioned the older Gryffindor this one had been talking to and now he would caution her. Nearly to the mini activity and they were both still chatting. "Save the non-class chatter for the corridors. I need you focused on the lesson and not distracting those around you."

She was doing herself no favours not answering the question. It made the chatter more an issue for him. Wasn't hard to answer what she'd do in the given scenario. Not knowing about hinkypunks was one thing but the other question was entirely open ended and required no prior information.

Perhaps if she hadn't been talking, she could have thought up an answer.

If he weren't so busy trudging through the terrain and distracted by other answers, he may have noticed the lack of response. As it so happened, he didn't know the boy and therefore didn't miss his response when none came. Nothing in his mind alerted him to the boy's verbal absence.

He continued walking.

Same thing with this one. Distracted as he was and as unfamiliar as he was with the students, there was no way he'd notice the absence of a response from a student or two.

For now, it went right under the radar.

"Interesting." The man was half distracted while he looked both to the left then the right. They would be approaching their destination soon. He...just had to remember which way it was. "What happens if you get taken by whatever lured you away and aren't able to double back?"

Believe it or not, the man was genuinely curious about this. Did the boy have a backup plan? Was there another idea zipping around inside that head? Everyone needed a backup plan.

Blink. Blink.

Surprised? Something inside him told him he shouldn't be. After the shoe comment, he had the feeling that this was really as good as it was going to get with this one. "....right."

He wasn't above remedial lessons. Keep this up and she'd find herself in some with a certain Slytherin Prefects.

TREES.

"Good thinking, I'd say." It seemed a bit sketchy to follow unknown lights off into the darkness. "You never know what's lurking. Now that we've established that, I'd like you to consider a scenario in which the bog is known for having lights to guide travellers. A situation in which you already expect there to be lights."

Malachi was absentmindedly nodding along to this ones information on hinkypunks. So far, it was spot on, the sort of thing he hoped the first years were listening to. The man was about to reply, more or less letting him know he was correct but that question took him aback.

The Headmaster turned to look back at the students on impulse, trying in vain to catch the face of whoever had just asked the question. Didn't take long for him to realize how impossible it was.

Not wanting to start tripping over things, he faced forward once more. "Well....technically turning around and running back home is an option--but not today in this lesson. Do it on your own time and if you do, ensure you're faster than whatever may be hunting you." Solid advice. He was welcome.

Well at least this turning around didn't involve outright running...and if it did, at least he didn't say it.

"You could turn and head back in the direction you came, yes. That's also a good point." One he hoped the others were listening to. "Being out of their range of fire significantly lowers the level of danger." Hinkypunks, once they couldn't get to you, actually weren't that bad.

"It's always a good idea having your own light source in dark situations." This one lantern was all they had for the moment but things would be changing soon enough. "That said, now I want you to consider something your classmate mentioned earlier. Using your own light giving you unwanted attention and allowing predators to know exactly where you are."

She wasn't wrong, it was simply good to consider all angles.

"What happens if there's no leader, or worse, you're the leader and everyone else is depending on you?" Stopping was an option too, yes and not a bad one depending on the situation and how much danger was actually present.

Just something for the boy to think about. Couldn't always depend on someone else to determine your fate.

That was....an interesting response. Almost like the universe was having an extra little laugh at his expense with the mention of trees once more. At least it wasn't the Slytherin Prefect this time.

He could live with this.

"No need to apologize for answering a question." It was hardly talking his ear off. The man had ran into a Gryffindor on the way down to breakfast and now knew the true meaning of having his ear talked off. This was nothing by comparison. "You bring up a good point, climbing a tree aside. Sometimes the better option is taking cover and waiting for the worst of the danger to pass." Good job.

"Isolation. Yes. Just the thing I'm hoping we can avoid on this little excursion and something I hope your classmates are actively trying to avoid." He didn't need anyone getting lost and left behind. They wouldn't be hard to find once the charm ended but they'd miss out on a whole lot before then and he'd have to do something about it after.

The voice was familiar. He couldn't see, not when his back was to them and his eyes fixed on the near darkness but that voice.

Ah. Monster in a portal kid.

"Good. Constant vigilance. You can't just follow strangers into bogs. Most people have no business being in bogs to begin with. Granted, some may mean well, but there's always a chance they may not. This isn't to say you should spend your life being paranoid but rather that every decision needs to be carefully thought through." And this one already seemed....a little....paranoid.

Monster in a portal.

"On the flip side of that, it could be someone tired of losing travellers to the hinkypunks in the area. Someone dedicated to helping others move through safely. You never really know."

Again, the Headmaster found himself nodding along as a student spoke. Mentally, he was going through the information offered, double verifying it in case there was anything that needed correcting while half his attention remained on figuring out the path they needed to take.

So far so good.

Head Boy, right? Sounded like him from his limited interactions thus far. "Disarming is a good first option. Remove their means of hurting you and you've effectively removed the threat. That said, I'd also like you to consider the flip side of many lanterns." Because there were always many sides to anything. "What if the lanterns were intended for travellers? To keep them on the right path while going through the bog because of a string of hinkypunk attacks in the past?"

Just so they left no stones unturned.

"That's a good point to throw into the mix." He said, slowing all the more as he was sure they were coming up to where they needed to be. "No, they don't force you to follow them, it's entirely your choice."

Back on feet, huh?

Malachi would pretend he never heard that part. "If it's a path you've taken before, it's fair to stick to it. The bog isn't likely to have changed by much since your last visit." Pause. "What about if you've never been there before and don't know what path is the "safe" one?"

Bonus question for her to think about.

Okay. Sure. He'd take it. "Knowing your surroundings is very important, yes." Yep, they were definitely getting close. "It goes back to the scenario I gave a few of your classmates. What happens if the lanterns were actually put there to help? Knowing the setup, you'll already know the answer to this." In the end, a useful response.

Then she'd be able to make an informed decision.

Mary followed closely, keeping to the group and watching her feet with what little light there was. She felt the mud oozing through the lace holes in her boots, but ignored it and continued. She knew nothing about hinkypunks, so she did not respond to the questions and instead continued walking. The answers to the questions were of nothing she understood.

At one point, she tripped over a tree roit she couldn't have seen and cursed under her breath as she used her soccer instinct to push her foot into the ground and therefore not fall down.

In the dark, facing the other direction while students offered up responses, a few missing ones here and there went completely unnoticed. Her tripping went equally unnoticed.

And another that fell off the Headmaster's radar. The silence was easily missed when there were others offering up answers and the man was actively trying to remember the route they needed to take.

"Correct." Oh, oh this was where they were going. It was just up ahead. "They don't have much going for them physically." Just wisps of smoke and a lantern.

Another out of the box suggestion, sure. Here information was spot on too. It told him at least some of the students were keeping up with their readings.

"Didn't say you had company to go linking hands." At the same time, he hadn't said there weren't. It was a good time to start considering things from all angles. "What if you didn't have anyone to tug you back or to tug on so they don't go?"

To the point. He liked that. "Agreed. If the lights are grunting and making other strange noises, it's safe to say it's not just a harmless lantern put there to keep you safe." Which negated the scenario he'd given to a few of the other students.

Another one for running. He supposed there was no shame in running, especially alone in a bog where no one could see you running so sure, he'd take it. "A little suspicion can carry you a long way." He agreed. Honestly, with all he'd heard about Hogwarts, he could understand varying levels of suspicion among the students.

"The key is to not be too suspicious and thus irrational. Always a balance to be struck."

SPOILER!!: Parker
This was very different from anything Kaira had expected. It seemed a bit like they were in a muggle film that she had seen recently (Lord of the..something- she couldn't recall the exact name)

'They umm..are smoke-like creatures that pretend as a lamp-bearing beings and lure travellers off...They are..umm..impish and they are part of muggle stories too, as a matter of fact..especially in Indian folklore. They can propel fireballs from their lamp..,' she added.

What would she do if there were many lanterns like that? That was a tricky one.

'I would cast my own light and take the path that my instincts tell me to follow..,' she said. Her intuitions never failed her.

Malachi nodded to her points on the hinkypunk. More or less in line with what her classmates had said.

"In response to you saying you'll make your own light, I'd also like you to consider the position of sitting duck you'll make yourself once you have a light going that alerts all predators and creatures to where you are."

Just to give her another side of the coin to consider.

SPOILER!!: Swann
Daisy followed the Headmaster/DADA Professor's instructions and followed him using the light he was carrying and the sound of his voice as a guide. She was mindful of how she walked among the boggy terrain. Daisy thought about the question and gave her answer.

"I'd use a powerful illumination spell like 'Lumos Duo' to illuminate the area where there could be a Hinkypunk because I think that could render them immobile."

Similar to the last response but this one was more about immobilizing them. "That's a viable option, true. Once you get them out of the way, you're free to fumble around the bog for the entire night without fear--of them anyway." Still plenty other creatures in a bog.

"Here we are!" Malachi came to a stop near the edge of a body of water. It was difficult to see much of anything outside of where the lantern struck but it was evident they were now by a river of sorts.

"Very good everyone, I see some reading has been done. Just a quick recap before we move on. Hinkypunks are creatures that resemble smoke. Real wispy. Think blue or white or grey. They're one legged and carry a lantern around which they use to lure travellers off their path and into bogs." Pretty standard stuff. He wouldn't go into too much detail because they didn't have the time, their classmates had already covered most of it and they would be getting a reading assignment once this was all over to supplement this lesson anyway.

"As some of your classmates have mentioned, they shoot fireballs from their lanterns--the real reason they're a threat. Those fireballs are...well....hot. It's fire. It does damage. You don't want to remain within their line of fire. They're also known to make noises. Grunts, hollers, that sort of thing." The kind that could unnerve a person in the dead of night with limited lighting.

"Moving on!" He hoped they'd been paying attention to each other. The students had given the bulk of the information and there wasn't any need to say it ALL again.

Malachi drew his wand to reveal a few boats. Those closer to the front had a better chance of seeing them. "We're taking a little trip that will get us to our final activity. There are boats by the edge of the water here." He paused to gesture. "No more than five in a boat. Don't worry about capsizing, they've been charmed against that. Similarly, they will not sink. You've got nothing to worry about from them." So no unnecessary panic, yeah? They'd all been doing good at that so far. "You will board the boats then follow me in mine. Remember what I've said. Listen for my voice. Look for my lantern. It's very important."

For reasons. Ahem.

With that, the Headmaster climbed into the first boat and nudged himself out onto the water. He brightened his lantern a bit so they could see back on the shoreline. "Everyone into boats, no time to waste."

OOC: Time for the mini activityyyyyy. So here's the basic rundown. The students are in for a trip down the river in boats. The boats have been charmed to be near foolproof. Perfectly safe for students to steer on their own with the use of the oars (five so each person can row). For now, your charries can choose a boat to be in/who'll be in their boats. I'll get us started down the river in 24 hrs.

Everyone seemed to be going into each boat quicker then Skyler could barely see.
"Anyone have a free boat?" She asked.

Sooooo, running back home was an option, then? Just not in this lesson?

Lucas was torn. He was glad that, in a normal circumstance, he could run home because that was exactly what he'd do. Stay and fight a creature that could potentially throw fireballs at you? No, that wasn't how he liked to spend his day.

But then the Headmaster also mentioned that they weren't going to be doing that in this lesson so..... well, it meant one thing: he'd have to fight. Biting his lip, he clutched onto his wand - which was still in its holster - a little tighter than he should've. The worst part? Being faster than whatever's hunting you. He wasn't the fastest Gryffindor on the block but all that running last term did do something to his fitness. He hoped.

He was a growing boy and he hoped that muscles were part of that.

Oh, they were going on a trip? In boats?

Lucas glanced over at Józef. Something told him that this wasn't going to be a nice boat ride along a riverbank where they could go and have a picnic. Instead, he let out a small sigh and squinted around for the best boat with the least amount of people that he could join and not feel awkward. But, it looked like his dormmate had other plans.

UH.

His eyes widened as he looked down at his arm that Jó had..... grabbed? And was now leading him?? Towards a boat??? Lucas did NOT know what to think. It looked like all plans of trying to avoid Jó and save himself from embarrassment were thrown out of the nearest window. Why? Because here he was: about to share a, uh, not-romantic boat ride with the very same boy he was 'in love' with just twelve hours ago.

MERLIN.

Was this some weird new test he knew nothing about? Because he was NOT prepared for this.

But.... there were other people here. That was a good sign, right? He tried to clamber into the boat as best as he could and sat down in a spare seat. "Hey, guys. Looks like we're a full team."

Their walk through the bog was more of a let all the other students give their answers while she observed their surroundings, paying close attention as well to where the professor's light was located.

However, this was the part of the lesson that she wasn't fond of. Boats played no role in her life until this point in time in which she would have happily passed on. Again, apparently there wasn't an option for it... and she had to mingle. Well, not really knowing anyone except whom she ran into on the train, and not particularly enjoying the idea of sharing a boat with them, she chose the first one she saw had an empty space as well as the same robe color as her (Mark).

Ah, well, maybe should've chosen on age too, but what's done is done.

Spotting Mark in his own boat, Nettie grinned and immediately headed towards that one. As she approached, an older Ravenclaw girl (whose name escaped her at the moment, oops) and climbed in. "Hello!" she piped up as she plopped in.

When the boats appeared, Anna could hardly see because she wasn't exactly at the front of the group, but she wasn't bothered. Soon enough she managed to get close enough to find a boat with an empty seat. She climbed onto it and greeted those in there. All Ravenclaws, it seemed. Anna didn't have a problem with that. "Hi, all!" She greeted them with a grin as she settled in. "I'm Anna." She introduced herself in case some of them didn't know her name, and also hoping that would make them tell her their names, because although she had seen some of them before, she actually didn't know them.

Except the little boy who was Ravenclaw's keeper the previous year. Gunter. She knew that much. It'd be helpful to know his first name, actually. "Where's my-" There the oar was! The fifth year quickly grabbed one and got ready to row! "Cool!" She finished with a beamy grin.
At first it was fine an Older girl from his same house joined him in the boat. That wasn't so bad if others around his age joined him then it wouldn't feel very awkward. In fact he was sure the awkwardness would reverse onto the older girl for getting into a boat of younger students. "Hi." Mark said with a smile to her as she settled into her seat.

Who else. OH Nettie! Mark liked Nettie she was fun to be around, and she was only a year older than him. Wait no not like liked Nettie, maybe he just liked her. "H-hi, Nettie. Welcome aboard!" Heheh that was so dumb and awkward Mark covered his face with his hood a bit more. Maybe he'll go back to disguising his voice again.

Next in Line? a First year. Mark was there once, that was last term. What a weird term that was. Why was he acting awkward in his own thoughts?! C'mon man! Man up!! "S-sure. yeah the more the Merrier." Ah butts he forgot to disguise his voice. Too late now. Just be Mark as Mark as you can be.

Oh...so far it was a Ravenclaw Boat! That made Mark calm down a bit....nope

Who was this? The Gryffindor Captain? Uh...Anna? Mark supposed it was inevitable that his boat wasn't going to be full Ravenclaw. "Hi, Anna I'm Ma..." oh she was already moving on to start rowing, Okay. He grabbed at his oar too then looked at his fellow rowers. Was it on his command to start rowing that was his role as the coxswain to start the process right? Except he had oars too so maybe he wasn't in absolute command?

He looked again....Oh..oh Geeze his Boat was full of girls...Okay that's okay Mark nothing wrong with that. Why hesitate? "W-we can go now. If if you want to go. It's not on my command though, you know. I don't want to be the boss or anything. Just a suggestion." Ugh so much for Mark being as Mark as he could.

Anna was a Gryffindor and a Captain too. She could Captain the Boat instead of him. Please take command! Actually maybe the stern of the boat was on her end anyways. So she was at the front so yeah she was in command!! There, problem solved.

The Professor, and the class, carried on. Maxie kept quiet.

Others had spoken the very thoughts he'd been having and been praised for it and- and and- Ugh. Last night had been terrible enough but this felt? Worst. Somehow. He couldn't explain, and he didn't want to and he wouldn't. The Hufflepuff crossed his arms under his chest (careful not to poke himself with his grandfather's wand) and puffed out his cheeks as the Professor talked on and on about Hinkypunks and all the dangers they posed. he was interested, he was, but he was also feeling weird and frustrated too and that kinda cut into his listening.

Boats again, water again. At least this time there wasn't rain. Maxie chewed his lip, peeking around at the other students as they clambered into their boats, and he decided that none of them looked very welcoming. Er. Yeah.. Um..

Fidgeting, the Hufflepuff's eyes fell on a boat with only one occupant- an older boy who looked... fairly... normal....

He weighed his options. He could a)get in the boat or b) fake sick and walk back alone through the dark classroom and- Yeah, no, he was getting into the boat.

"U-Uh... C-can i?" Was he even supposed to be asking? It seemed rude not to.

It hadn't occurred to him until he heard the Headmaster tell this Hufflepuff to not step into his boat that Mark would have felt a little less outnumbered. No he can be here with them! Please...Just make the boat a little bigger or something with your expert magic! Mark just gave the first year Hufflepuff an apologetic look as he was sent elsewhere to be on another boat.

Sorry.

Well that was a positive response meaning they now had four of the five spots filled up on their boat. "You're welcome," Septimus replied, offering the Slytherin girl an oar. "Nice to meet you...I'm Septimus," he added, returning her introduction.

The habit of waiting on everyone else was becoming, well... quite the habit. Chloe wanted to make sure everyone got settled, but this mothering instinct that took over at the moment she received her badge was getting to be stupid. Like, now the boats were nearly full and Chloe was going to have to row by herself. Five oars, one medium sized Head Girl. The odds weren't in her favor.

"Ugh, I'm STUPID but if anyone wants to ride with me, I will stupidly work two oars at once," Chloe stomped (maturely) into the next nearest boat and sat down, steadying herself as the whole thing shuddered under her fit of temper.

Now they had to get on a boat. Taddy blinked because he saw everyone was already pairing up before his eyes. Yikes. He had to find a boat that would have him fit.... gosh they were all full. He was about to get anxious when he saw... yes! Free!

"Hey Chloe, I'll join you." Taddy chirped. This would work. She was Head Girl so she knew everything... even if she was being completely modest in his mind. "I bet we'll beat the others." Smiling as if he just had a bowl of pickle cereal.

Juniper was really starting to wonder if she could count to five. She could but still. Everyone was clambering for the boats. What was this the titanic? Every time she found a boat it was full. So she decided to let everyone get in boat. She could wait that was awesome let the little kids in first.

Is this what seventh year was? It didn't help that there was a ton of little kids. Chloe? Juniper frowned hearing the head girl. "Chloe you are not stupid." Really how dare she put herself down like that. The seventh year was not going to stand for that. Joining her best friend in the boat along with Thad who had appeared (like out of nowhere). If she had to be on a boat with some she rather it be Chloe Kettleburn.

Isla on the other hand received a look from her that showed she understood the younger girls fear and that it was okay.

As they walked deeper into the bog she kept a good hold on her cousins hand walking just a tad bit in front of her so if anything happened she would be the first to know about it. Stopping at the river Rylee carefully inched closer so they would have a better look at what was there and what was going on. Unknown body of water, unknown body of water deep enough that boats were needed... this alone had her stomach doing flips but now wasn't the time to be nervous. Now wasn't the time to be reminded of Inferi or Grindylow both of which she was still very much frightened and left both physical and mental scars on her.

Get in a boat and listen for the Headmasters voice and follow the light of his lantern. Yeah, right. Easier said than done. Even if these boats wouldn't sink. Rylee inhaled a deep breath holding it while very carefully getting into a boat, when it didn't move of flip over she reached out a hand to help Isla into the boat with her, as well as three others that were welcome to join them. Sitting down she picked up an oar and handed them out to everyone else silently.

Following along, she kept a few mental notes about the Hinkypunks. Hoping one would not come out too soon. Please ...please don’t. Sigh. Hold on...they were doing what now? Steering their boats into the darkness with just one lanterrrn?! First of all, why would anyone do this? She would have to get past her fears!

Isla hastily board the boat with Rylee. She mouthed a thanks to her before taking her place at the front of the boat with her oar.

It would probably be over nothing, and it would be too dark to see her tears, but she didn't care, and the crying would likely be loud and ugly anyhow....

Charlie, luckily, had absorbed a lot of the information stated by her classmates and the headmaster (and she would be sure to read after class to supplement it). Hinkypunks, by way of the headmaster's description, sounded cute and adorable (like something out of a muggle children's fantasy cartoon), but they probably weren't so cute once they lead you into a bog... or if they shot fireballs at you. That, too.

So, they won't sink or capsize, but we still have to guide them in the dark with only Headmaster Trent's lantern... right. Charlie just had to trust him... even if she didn't, she would give no indication of such. The boats weren't filling up quite yet, but she didn't care to waste time anyhow, so she made a decision quickly and headed for the boat occupied by the fourth and first year that Headmaster Trent had scolded.

"I hope it's okay for me join your boat," she stated, the lilt of her voice painting it as an inquiry. She was already moving to get in the boat and grab her oar, but she could always leave....

Following the headmaster hadn’t been too fraught with dangers, aside from the occasional issue with her shoes nearly getting stuck in the muck and the darkness making things that much more nerve-wracking. In an odd way, it was reminding her of the lessons way back when she was a first and second year, with Professor Hirsch teaching them. The difference was that she hadn’t quite developed the trust with the headmaster as she had the other DADA professor. Obviously she wasn’t counting last term. That had been something else entirely.

She’d stayed quiet during the discussion about hinkypunks, focusing more on keeping up with the group as they’d finally come up alongside a river that she knew for a fact was the result of magic, even considering she’d known the bog had been in the first place. A river definitely wasn’t something that existed inside the classrooms of Hogwarts, last time she’d checked. Plus, she’d gotten the distinct idea that the headmaster didn’t exactly approve of repeating answers and early everything she’d known about hinkypunks had been mentioned.

Instead, she applied herself to finding a boat to board. Chloe’s had been under consideration, but ten she’d seen the boat containing Rylee and two younger students, of which only one she was familiar with, having met at the feast. Either way, the idea that having an older student there didn’t seem like a bad one, so she’d made her way over. “Mind if I join you?,” she asked, giving the three younger students smiles as she carefully stepped into the boat and curled her legs underneath herself before accepting an oar.

Malachi gets into the boat and grabs an oar, honestly glad he was accepted. He turn to the others and smiles slightly. "My name is Malachi (pernounced mal-soft a-kai), nice to meet you all."

"Hi" Mary said. She was a quiet person, but the night was equally quiet, so she was pretty sure he could hear it. She looked forward, towards the other side. Having memories of the boat ride that brought her to the feast, Mary really hoped it would be quick. She looked back towards the bot that just sat down and hoped for not too much sociality.

SPOILER!!: Muldoon

Soooooo this was what they learned in Hogwarts? This was definitely so weird. Kaitlyn looked at the schedule and shrugged. This was a magical school though so she didn’t expect she would learn the any “Muggles” subjects like other siblings here. Defense against the dark art. What an interesting name! So she would learn how to fight “the dark art”? Like superheroes but with wands? Imagining Superman waving the wand to defeat villains make her laugh so hard. Preparing for the class, she was ready to learn new things.

The girl looked at the Headmaster while he was greeting students then asking questions. She didn’t know the answer so she just remained quiet and listened to what other people talked. She did know some words as she had read the book but mostly it was new to her. After that, Kaitlyn followed Headmaster, tried not to be lost or worse, die. I mean the place is pretty dangerous and she really wondered if her father was right when he sent her here. Listening to the Headmaster, she recalled some words that she just read earlier in the morning. ”They said Hinkypunk can propel fireballs far from their lamps, causing serious damage”

Following the Headmaster, they finally arrived at the river and then they stopped. Listening to what Prof. Trent said, she looked at the row of boats. It was safe, right? Watching others finding their boat teammates, she started to find a boat that hadn’t been full. Noticing the Headgirl’s boat hadn’t been full yet, she came closer and asked nervously. ”Can I join you guys?”

It was mostly quite frightening following Professor Trent around in the dark. Near a bog. Whilst talking about Hinkypunks. And now... well now they were getting into boats. In the dark. Gulp. No, Hanna wasn't scared of the dark. It was just what was in the dark.

She looked around for a boat, considering getting in one by herself so that she could have a little freak out privately. She vetoed that idea pretty quickly though. No, she definitely wanted to be around other people. Boats seemed to be filling in quickly, but she spotted one with mostly people from Ravenclaw, and a Gryffindor. "D-do you mind if I join?" she asked. Now that her wand had been holstered, her fingers felt fiddly with anxiety and she was starting to pick at the skin on her fingers.

Yes, well, that was why he had said IF he got close enough and...well...the implied meaning had been that there was visual confirmation that the lantern did in fact belong to the creature in question. Though he simply nodded in response to the headmaster rather than say anything further. Wasn't the point of the lesson, after all. Unless the man was meaning to imply that HE was the harbinger of good travels and everything. Which, well, the Hufflepuff was HOPING was true.

Once at the boats, Derf's brain shifted into helpful badger mode rather than concerning himself - maybe it was because he hadn't been able to get the first year boat assistance out of his system - and had been scampering back and forth helping his classmates here and there find their own boats while ENTIRELY neglecting to find himself one. And it was only at the last second that he remembered this, the intention of riding in one with Chloe, only to find her boat full riiiiiiiiight in that moment.

Well....fudge pops.

Ruffling his hair, Derf held his hand up in the air and waved it slightly. You know, to...er...try and help people see him better? "GOT ROOM FOR FOUR MORE PEOPLE HERE!" he called out, his right foot placed inside it to help hold it steady.
