But the epilouge brought nothing to the story. It wasn't needed. The book would be complete without it and it feels like it just doesn't belong with the book nor the rest of the series.
I agree with you. The only information we got was on the three main and Ginny and Draco. What happened to Luna, the other Weasleys and such? I know we got interviews with it in, but people who can't access then won't know unless some one else tells them.

And if there is anything through out the books, it's the no matter what happens, whether it be a marriage, a birthday or something; there's always an underlying sense of evil there. The epilogue totally destroyed it because the only "evil" in it was Al thinking the hat might put him in Slytherin.

The books were fine as they were and gave you a real sense of something. The epilogue's more like something out of a fan-fic or some one elses book.

I wonder if the epilogue was a reflection on JKRs life. The 19 years is about the time from her original idea and the production of movie seven. I believe she has three children, so does Harry. She may no longer be troubled by the scars of her past. If we knew what her original inspiration was, it might explain the epilogue.

May be she will tell us more in the encyclopedia she wants to make. I too wanna know more about the other characters but she won't tell every fat of every character cause they are many, aren't they?

I'm completely torn. I agree with the people who say that the ending doesn't seem to belong to the book, and there is something a bit alien about it, but I don't agree that the book would have been complete without it because everyone would have complained that we don't know what happened to the characters. However, I do think it could have been written differently so that it didn't feel as cheesy and as sickly sweet.

One thing I do think is that she's definitely left it open if she did want to write any more. "All was well" feels like there's an invisible bit missing of the end like "at the moment" or "or was it?"...sorry I know that's pure cheese

I think that is the plan for the encylopedia. More details and backstory that she couldn't fit through out the series. She said in the MSNBC interview that:

Quote:
“J.K. Rowling told TODAY’s Meredith Vieira she “probably will” publish a Potter encyclopedia, promising many more details about her beloved characters and the fate of the wizarding world beyond the few clues provided in the seventh book’s epilogue.

I suppose I have [started] because the raw material is all in my notes,” Rowling said.

The encyclopedia would include back stories of characters she has already written but had to cut for the sake of narrative arc (“I've said before that Dean Thomas had a much more interesting history than ever appeared in the books”), as well as details about the characters who survive “Deathly Hallows,” characters who continue to live on in Rowling’s mind in a clearly defined magical world.

Hogwarts, for example, has a new headmaster (“McGonagall was really getting on a bit”), and Rowling said she can see Harry going back to give the “odd talk” on Defense Against the Dark Arts. That class, by the way, is now led by a permanent professor, since Voldemort’s death broke the jinx that didn’t allow a teacher to remain in the position for more than a year.
She also said;

Quote:
Rowling said her original epilogue was “a lot more detailed,” including the name of every child born to the Weasley clan in the past 19 years. (Victoire, who was snogging Teddy — Lupin and Tonks’ son — is Bill and Fleur’s eldest.)

“But it didn’t work very well as a piece of writing,” Rowling said. “It felt very much that I had crowbarred in every bit of information I could … In a novel you have to resist the urge to tell everything.”

Quote:
Rowling said she may eventually reveal more details in a Harry Potter encyclopedia, but even then, it will never be enough to satisfy the most ardent of her fans.

“I’m dealing with a level of obsession in some of my fans that will not rest until they know the middle names of Harry’s great-great-grandparents,” she said. Not that she’s discouraging the Potter devotion!

“I love it,” she said. “I’m all for that.”
But we my have a wait on our hands...

Quote:
“I’m not going to do it tomorrow because I’d really like a break,” Rowling said, laughing. “So you may be waiting.”
Anne Rice co-wrote an enclypedia type book for her Vampire Chronicles series. It was called the: Vampire Companion - The Offical Guide to Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronciles. It was a fan's dream. It was 500+-pages of maps, illustrations and photos, bits of Anne Rice information, a time line, in-depth character biographies, cross-references characters, plots and themes from each of those books, plus contains exhaustive research.

If JKR follows that example it would be wonderful. Sure every question still may not be answered but a little mystery is a good thing for everyone's imagination.

---
JKR's own words on the epilouge:

Quote:
It was widely reported that the last word of the final Harry Potter book was "scar" and for years Rowling said that was true.

In the epilogue, which is set19 years after the defeat of Voldemort, Rowling paints a picture of Harry standing on platform 9 3/4, his nearest and dearest surrounding him. In her original draft, the last line was “Only those who he loved could see the lightning scar,’” ….or “something like” that, she told Meredith Vieira in an exclusive interview.

Ultimately, Rowling felt that line was too ambiguous, begging the question about whether the scar was still there or not. She said wanted a more concrete statement that Harry had won; Voldemort had been defeated. The scar was still there, but now it was only a scar.

“I wanted to say it’s over. It’s done.”

Rowling changed the last line to: “All was well.”

“That felt right,” she said.

I loved it, every little bit of it. The fact how Harry named his children James, Lily and Albus Severus. I adored the bit how Albus had green eyes, just like Harry. When Teddy Lupin got caught snogging somebody cracked me up. But the little conversation between Harry, and Albus about Albus' fear of being placed in Slytherin, brought tears to my eyes. I was disappointed with the fact that we never figure out who Draco marries. I was sad that we never figured out what happened to Dudley, Vernon, Petuina, Luna, and the rest of the Weasleys. All-in-all, I was pretty pleased with the ending, but would have loved for some more, as do all of us.

^ I agree. I loved it. I mean the fact that Harry and Ginny got married was enough for me! Then they throwed the kids in with it! I think it's really cool that Ron and Hermione got married and are still really good with Harry and Ginny. and I love the fact that he named his kids after his parents and dumbledore. Although I wish she would've explained how James looked because I figure out how to pictue him in my head.

The Epilouge was a bit to...how should I put this?? Too perfect!!
I mean everyone got their happy ending and everything, but for a author that killed many beloved characters throughout 10 years, the ending was to happy!! But apart from that it was O.K

^ I also agree with. I think that something tragic should have happened. Like one of the main characters needed to die for some noble cause or something like that. but I still think it was awesome.

Epilouge? Deathly Hallows doesn't have an epilouge, what are you talking about? (I really hated the epilouge so I'm pretending it doesn't exist)

Me, too! I'm not reading it when I re-read either. It was pretty pointless and VERY cheesie.

I think she could've done a lot better but after a book like that you kind of need a happy ending. But I will say that this ending was a little TOO happy.

heart Over all it was good, I'd buy two even ...

Happy Endings Rock My Socks but ... what about Seamus & Dean? And Hannah and Ernie and the job at the ministry and Luna hooking up with Neville and Dumbledore's illegitimate Child? OMG! What none of you actually read Rita's book? Seriously ...

I loved the ending but I would have loved to have found out what happened to all the other characters in the book, yeah, even the bad guys, I mean ... Did Draco & Pansy ... you know ... totally hook up ... or did they break up after the prom?

ZOMG! Inquiring minds want to know.

I thought that the epilogue was good; it showed that despite the tragedy, life moves on. However, I didn't think the epilogue fit the rest of the book. The whole book was a dark story about Harry looking for the horcruxes and eventually realizing that he had to accept his death, and the epilogue was just " . . . and they all lived happily ever after."

I thought that the epilogue was great, but I was kinda sad it wasn't a bit longer, or we got a bit more information. I was pleased with the relationships and since Harry was an only child and all that he had three kids. I started laughing when Ron said that he passed his drivers test. But all in all, I was pleased.

the epilogue was a bit too happy for me...but i'm not complaining for harry, he deserves it...it's just that, maybe it would have been better if after reading the final chapter, i took a break (days...hours...perhaps?) before going into the epilogue (like i could really do that? )...the emotional transition was a bit abrupt for me...

I was disappointed by the epilogue! There wasnt anything about Hagrid or Luna or anyone at all..it almost seemed like a forced chapter just to make out the point that "all was well". I wouldve expected a lot more from the last chapter of the series

That said I loved the Ron and Hermione bits of the epilogue, Im the biggest RonHermione fan ever!

the Epilogue didn't quite fit in with the story. It would have been great to find out what happened to the other characters. It was like something out of fanfiction and too sickly sweet..it was cute & fluffy I guess.

I think she copped out and wrote an easy ending.

As I have expected, the story plot ended w/ H/G & H/R but never imagined Draco would still be a little evil. But it was all expected. I thought Harry's scar will be gone after killing Voldemort.

i think most of you are right when you say that the ending was a little too happy. I was okay with it. I guess i got to read it first hand what happened after all the action in Hogwarts. The names of Harry's kids kinda got to me though......Albus Severus?!!. James and Lily?!!...made you try desperately not to roll your eyes cuz the rest of the book was really great.

As far as who Victorie is, it is Bill and Fleur's child. Check out Wikepedia, there is a huge family tree on that site that shows all the generations.

Some things that bugged me, 1. Did Harry become an Auror? 2. I wanted to know what James' middle name is, was it Sirius? 3. What did he do with Kreacher. 4. Did he keep Sirius' house?

I cried when he told Albus that Sirius was the bravest man he had ever known. How awesome was that?

I did find it very cheesy, but I did think that it was needed. I suppose it's just the message that horrible things happen and people you love die, but life still goes on.

I didn't like the epilogue much, was too sappy and sweet for my tastes, those things I often like be left more to my imagination, and thought it weakened a spectacular ending. But then again, it being a childrens book too, I can understand why the epilogue's there. One can always choose not to read it right? I have read the book twice now, but have yet to read the epilogie for the second time. Am going to, but I chose not to directly after finishing the book for the second time. The book is more complete without it to me, and indeed I thought it was a bit too fan-fiction-y. (Great word but you get my meaning).
There were things I liked a bit though, just for fun. Names of kids and such. So it wasn't all bad, just I personally could have done without.
