My sister was actually so surprised that she thought he might be under the Imperius Curse to find out some info. Whatever happened to him and the Dusleys at the end, anyway?

Just like most of you, I too was surprised at Dudley's affection towards Harry. But then again, they did spend their whole lives together. I feel Dudley always had that soft spot for Harry but he used to have this 'macho' image so I guess that's why he never really bonded with Harry, not to mention, he was following his parents' behaviour as well.

Maybe JKR wanted to show that the Dursleys aren't actually THAT bad. Atleast Dudley. Maybe she took the opportunity to show that through Dudley's gesture.

im rily having this funny feeling that Jo really planned about these charcters turning out good, coz Dudley's was all of a sudden! i mean its not needed but it will make it better if he did, and im thankful that at least one of the dursleys appreciated Harry thoughtfully in the ending with Petunia, half-heartedly and Vernon well nothing....

yeah i was really suprised about this also. i think it was kind of a love/hate relationship. since they grew up together, he had sort of an "attatchment" to Harry...even if he didn't really like him and was kind of afraid of him. i wish we could have found out what became of the Dursley's in the end...

Ahh, I teared up slightly when I read that little part between Dudley and Harry. I think he'd always had um...feelings of remorse for him, and feelings of caring after Harry saved his life. I'm glad that he'd finally accepted him in that chapter =D

I think that Dudley got really creeped out about what he heard about voldemort, and having first hand experiences with dementors makes him realize how much danger he's in. then he thought about harry, whom he had always had a tiny bit of affection for. I think being "better" than harry always boosted Dudley's confidence

I was very surprised and touched by Dudley's attitude toward Harry in DH.

JKR explained in her Bloomsbury webchat on 7/30/07, what Dudley saw during the Dementor attack:

Quote:
Superhans: What was Dudley's worst memory?

J.K. Rowling: I think that when Dudley was attacked by the Dementors he saw himself, for the first time, as he really was. This was an extremely painful, but ultimately salutory lesson, and began the transformation in him.
That is why Dudley changed how he felt and acted toward Harry in DH.

Thats nice, carola. I was shocked to hear Dudley speaking like that to Harry. He was really trying to up himself and be a better person. In reality, he is 17, so he was getting to a mature stage.

I wonder what the fate of the Durlsey's were? They probably never heard from Harry ever again ...

I felt that he started to appreciate Harry for saving him from the dementors. That incident most likely destroyed his prejudices about wizards and helped him overcome his immaturity towards Harry. In the end Dudley grew up and realized that one of the Dursleys should give some thanks to him.

I wondered that, too. Someone had to let the Dursely's know Harry was safe and won the war so they could leave the protection of the Order. Maybe they got to have one more chat after all.

I hope when JKR does the encyclopedia she will put in what happened to the Dursleys, too.

If Harry had been treated as well as Dudley had, they'd be a lot like brothers. Actually, they still are a lot like brothers seeing as they grew up together (no matter what the conditions). They've known each other for pretty much as long as they can remember. Living without Harry must seem a bit odd after having him around for 16 years, huh? Especially after he saved his life.

If someone saved your life, I don't think you'd say that they were a waste of space either...
I agree. No matter how much Dudley semmed to have hated Harry, deep down he probably liked him. They grew up together and lived under the same roof(only the summer, for Harry)for 16 years. Imagine,a person living with you that long, and then you're told that you probably won't see that person ever again.Shoking, I would say. Yes,I would also say that Dudley's likin for Harry also grew when he saved his life.Deep down,he must of felt some gratitude.

I really hope that Harry went to go visit them after it was all over.

they were relatives to begin with...so i guess at some point or another, dudley questioned his attitude towards harry...and after being saved by harry, he realized how misguided he was (thanks to lovely petunia and vernon)...thus the change of heart

A product of his upbringing, he is.

Also, I think he was more accustomed to Harry than actually fond of him. I mean, Harry's the only one who didn't yell constantly or act like a total weirdo in the house, sooo... I think he was just starting to realize that Harry is the good guy.

i think Dudley experienced a "you don't miss it til it's gone" kinda feeling. he may not have realised it in the end but Harry's always been around, doesn't matter in what way. He (dudley) actually softened in the end towards Harry possibly because of it. It was a really touching piece in the book.

I think Dudley would have liked Harry from the beginning, ifit weren't for his parents. He grew up prejudice against Harry and his kind, and never was able to form his own opinions about wizards. Seeing Harry leave, and all the trouble wizards were going through for him, made him realize that his parents were wrong.

I am sure that Dudley loved Harry since they grew up together. Dudley did not know a life without Harry in it. I feel like he acted that way toward Harry because of his parents, as it was learned behavior. I really feel that things changed between them after he saved Dudley. For Dudley it was like losing his brother, and not understanding why he wasn't going to be there any more. He has never known a life without Harry in it, even though those moments weren't warm and fuzzy, they were always in each other's lives.

I wished JK had written that Dudley produced a magical child, and was on 9 3/4 sending his child off to Hogwarts at the same time as Harry. That would have been to funny.

Dudley's pseudo-reformation was probably my favorite part of the book. It showed that however much his parents forced their opinions and views on him, he was still capable of independent thought. He, unlike his parents, had bore witness to such things as Dementors and he knew just what Harry was getting in to and this dense realization his him probably not long after the Dementor attack; he and Harry just didn't have all that much interaction until this point in the story. Unlike Petunia and Vernon, we see that Dudley is capable of some sort of compassion, understanding and caring. It took a major slap in the face to realize it but it was nice to see that Harry, however minutely, had someone that he could relate to, and someone that cared for him, in his own home.

Well I have to admit that Dudleys reaction to Harry being seperated from the Dursleys surprised me. I think that Dudley changed somewhat when Harry saved him from the Dementors. I mean think about it, he was brought up to hate and belittle Harry every chance he got. His parents made sure that both Harry and Dudley knew that magic was a bad thing. After all they werenīt even allowed to say the word in the house. I donīt even want to think about what grisly stories Petunia told her beloved Diddykins about the bad bad witches and wizards and the horrible things they could do. And then the first (at least the first we know of) experience with magic he has is that Harry sets a Boa on him.... and the first real wizard Dudley meets is Hagrid who promptly gives him a pigs tail and he needs to go through a operation to get rid of that one... how humiliating is that!?
I is clear that that experiance didnīt make him warm up to magic.
The sweets from the twins didnīt help either (though that scene was very funny indeed ). And then Harry goes and saves him, now that must have been a shock for him. But he starts to realize that not all magic is bad. After all Harry used some of it to save him. That might have led him to the conclusion that Harry is not that bad a person all together...
Well that at least is what I think.

I wonder if Harry kept in touch with Dudley or if Dudley tried to sort of mend their relationship after the war once they were brought back to Privet Drive. Would be kind of good if they had a sort of understanding kind of like Harry and Draco.

I think that it was always there but he saw how mean is parents were to Harry so he thought he would be to and when he finds out that when Harry leaves this last time he might never see him again and that is why he was being so nice to him.
