Hmm ... I think that Trelawney was respected early in her teaching years. When she does her 'predictions' on the first day or something, the students thought that she was a fraud and didn't notice if she was just joking. So, they went with what they thought and told rumors the she was a fraud. | |

Like one student keeps on telling others that Trelawney is a fraud and that she can't really predict the future and then it gets to their parents who spread it on to others.

People probably think she's a fraud just because of the reputation of her subject. It's not really considered very reliable and all that, so when she actually is right, people won't believe her. It's rather sad, actually. | |

People can be terrified of Seers; knowing they have the ability to tell the future is a scary thought. People probably don't want to thin kabout what their future holds so start rumors about her and others saying they're frauds.
