Running a hand along the dusty frame of the window, she rubbed the dirt from her fingers and gazed outside silently, tears trickling down her face. She was 16, motherless, more or less fatherless, almost friendless and she was sarcificing the little happiness she had ever had to help her God-Father. It was hard, far worse than hard, it was heart wrenching. But what part of that, didn't the man outside understand? She needed help, not the hinderance of harshness and yet he couldn't grasp that.

He knelt down by the pond and put his hand in the water. It was cool, but warm enough for swimming if the children wanted to. Snape made his way back to the cottage and walked in the front door. He spied Marcella looking out the window. "You and your friends may go to the pond today, if you like," he said, wiping the sweat off his brow with his sleeve.

She shook her head melachonly, not looking at him, or anyone in particular, just staring outside at the sky, wondering why on earth this had to happen to her. Wiping her face, she placed her head on her knees, sobbing quietly.

This was very awkward. Snape didn't know what to do with crying girls. Kristi never cried. He couldn't handle this. Nevertheless, he walked over to Marcella and sat down beside her. He shifted uncomfortably in the chair, trying to think of what he should say. Instead of saying anything, he settled on patting her back a couple of times before holding his hands in his lap and waiting for her to say something.

Lifting her head, she was surprised to see him sat next to her. Nevertheless, it still didn't show he cared for anyone other than himself. She raised her hand a little, as if to fold them in her lap, and, accidentally, she allowed a flash of the cuts on her wrists to be seen by him.

He grabbed her arm before she could pull away and looked down at the cuts. "What's this?" he asked, his voice less harsh than before.

"They're old..." she remarked, not feeling at all comfortable with him holding her arm. She knew he wasn't stupid enough to not know what they were. Tearing her arm away, softly, she mumbled, quietly, "I know I shouldn't and I'm ashamed of myself."

Snape looked down upon the daughter of the Dark Lord. She seemed so fragile and lost. She wasn't at all what he had expected. "I'm sure you had your reasons," he said cryptically.

She nodded her head, briefly, pulling on her black jacket so that her wrists were now partially covered. Looking out the window, briefly, she muttered, "I dont think I'll want to go outside." And, then, turning back to him, she tried to smile and said, "Thank You." laying her head on his shoulder shortly.

Snape nearly jumped out of his skin when she placed her head on his shoulder. He shifted away from her slowly, trying to figure out what it was she was doing. He didn't know anyone who would willingly touch him, let alone put their face on him and he was completely unnerved by the entire experience.

Feeling a little rejected, though she knew not why, she turned back to the window, her eyes welling up again. For some reason, he just couldn't understand her. But she felt so lonely, so unwanted, so unloved that any sign of emotion or caring helped her. "Sorry.." she whispered.

Still not knowing what to say, but having read what it was she wanted, Snape moved back to where he had been. "Do you want me to leave?"

"Stay.." she whispered, placing a hand on his arm whilst saying this and then removing it straight after. She leant backward and allowed her head to fall back onto the wall, gently and she closed her eyes, as they painfully stung and silent tears ran down her face.

Snape looked down at his arm where she had touched him. Then, he looked over at her, the tears streaming down her face. He didn't know what to do, there was no potion to cure her, so he merely sat there and looked out the window.

Eventually, she drifted off to sleep, sat motionless, her tears had stopped falling, but her chest rose dramatically, as she breathed heavily.

Noticing that Marcella had closed her eyes, Snape leant forward to be sure she was okay before rising and leaving the room. He came back with a blanket and draped it over the sleeping girl. He looked down at her and wondered if she would be able to survive the summer and if she would ever fit in at Hogwarts.

Feeling a blanket fall over, she clung it close to her body and mumbled a vague 'Thank You' in her sleep state. Her head lolled to the left and her eyes drooped as her head faced him. Her arm slipped from under the blanket and, as it was facing downward, the sleeve rose and the fleshy cuts could once again be seen.

Snape saw her sleeve roll up to reveal the evidence of her weakness and carefully pulled the sleeves back down to cover them. He then placed her arms on her stomach. Then, he went over to the study, retrieved his book, and came back in the room with Marcella to sit and read.

Awakening, some 4 hours later, around midday, she stirred and her eyes open weakly, still aching from the previous tears. Looking around, she saw Snape asleep, looking as if he were in the middle of reading. Getting up from underneath the blanket, she prized the book from his hands and placed it on the coffee table. Picking up the blanket, she placed it over him instead and quietly made her way to the kitchen, where she filled the copper kettle and began to slice some bread.

Snape stirred as the blanket was drapped over him. But, he was so exhausted from his early morning venture that he did not wake.

Gratefully hearing nothing from the other room, she dashed over to the fire as the kettle whistled and tried to prevent it from waking him. Pouring the water into the teapot, she dropped in a drainer of tea leaves and left it to brew. Pouring milk and spooning sugar into mugs, she went about buttering the bread as she waited for the liquid to concentrate.

Snape heard a whistling and jumped up with his wand out. He was disoriented at first, but quickly remembered where he was. He put his wand away and walked into the kitchen.

Lifting the teapot, forgetting in her haste that it would be hot, she picked it up with her bare hand and dropped it instantaneously, her hand grew scolding red. Cursing, bitter tears formed in her eye lids and she threw down a towel, desparately trying to clear up her mess.

Snape walked in in time to see Marcella burning herself. He hurried over to her and grabbed her wrist to survey the burn. "Hold still," he said as he turned away and grabbed something from a cabinet. Turning back to her he smoothed the ointment over her burned palm. Then, bandaged the hand with a wave of his wand. "How does it feel?"

"It stings.." she muttered, honestly. Frustrated, she bit her lip and cursed awayher bitter tears. "I try and do something nice and this is what happens. Maybe I shouldn't bother.." she mumbled, down-heartedly, shaking in her anger, scowling at the teapot as if it were the inanimate object's fault.
