Andi pulled a smashed Cauldron Cake from her pocket and handed it to Lex. "I didn't get a chance to eat it on the train. You can have it." She turned to watch her brother and Rusty come in, assuming he had given up on waiting for Joey. "I'm sure we'll find out who the captain is soon enough, Lex," Andi left it deliberately vague, glad she wouldn't have to be the one to tell her sister the news. "Someone's not here yet at the head table. Who's missing?"

Bryce shrugged, feeling rather indifferent about the missing professor. "Maybe he needed to use the bathroom, how am I supposed to know?" he asked, wondering when the sorting would start. "Where are those firsties? I'm getting hungry...."

Beth looked back at Bryce's words briefly, before returning her attention to the staff table. She rested her head back on her arms, letting her hair fall forward to cover her face. 'You should have eaten on the train. These things always take time to kick off,' she mumbled after a few minutes. She was hungry, but it could wait. She was far more interested in this latest mystery.
All the staff bar McGonagall, who was no doubt shepherding the first years, were at the table with the exception of Hollace. That could easily mean that there would be a new teacher. It looked like this evening might be interesting yet.

"You're wrong, once again. I'm honestly not trying to get you in trouble, this time.." Joey said, nodding his way. "But do you want to play twenty questions when we get back? I most certainly do not, and if we walk in to the feast... together and late..," Joey said trailing off. "We can just mingle in later.."

"Heh.. Dad told me that story about your dad and Bucky. What a lil prat your dad was. I mean.. even you know better than to insult a hippogryff. Especially one as nice as Bucky..," Joey said confidently. It was about two moments too late though.. she had just told a Malfoy that the old hippogryff was indeed still alive...Maybe he didn't notice, or care though..So she quickly moved on. "Oh please, Malfoy. Don't try and sweet talk me. Pretty girl? Is there some sort of bet going on that you can win me over or something? Because your charm doesn't work on me. I can see through it..," Joey said with a chuckle. "Pretty girl.."

Charlie had been worried about where Joey had gotten to, especially since he didn't have a chance to properly see if she was okay after her fall. Nonetheless, the carriage ride to the school was bearable, but quiet. Wendi was quite a pretty girl, and Joey was right, was quite flirty. When they got to the Great Hall, Charlie found a seat by himself, looking around to see if Joey had made it to the castle in another carriage or something.

"Being seen with you like this won't damage my reputation, Potter. In case you forgot, I don't have an angelic Gryffindor image to maintain. And you're pretty enough to make it worth lying about. Not that I would... my father would skin me alive if he thought I was making friends with the dreaded Potter family. I happen to like my skin, so if you want to lay low, I'm for it."

"Pretty enough..," Joey mumbled under her breath, and began twisting her hair tightly around her finger again. She kicked rocks along the way, and fell silent. Her sixth year back had already begun so strangely. First, a new girl who is somehow linked to her through her parents shows up, and now she was having a somewhat civilized conversation with a Malfoy as she walked up the hill to school.

Joey looked up to the top of the hill, and she could of sworn she saw the figure of her brother standing there. She was just about to bring it Malfoy's attention, when whoever it was walked away. "I think for your own safety.. we should lay low. For some reason, I've become the little sister to every Gryffindor, and though your intentions with me have proven innocent.. so far ... there will be no explaining that to Rusty.. or Jake.. or Charlie.. or Brennan.. or the Twins..," Joey sighed as she trailed off once more.

"Fine," Orion responded shortly. "We can hide out until after the feast is through. Any suggestions? I don't fancy staying out here in the wet and dirt until Dumbledore deigns to finish with the feast, but I don't know of any alternatives." He considered their options before adding, "I'm surprised you're concerned with my well-being but I think you all need to come to terms with the fact that some inter-house "unity" is bound to happen. Look at your own parents." But it wasn't the Potters he was thinking of... he was considering MacNair's desire to get one of the Winston twins.

"Do I really look that stupid... and no, you don't have to answer that," he said. "I did eat on the train but, this is taking forever." Bryce crossed his arms and glared up at the head table. And where was Malfoy?

Serenity shifted from foot to foor while gazing around the large entry hall. Ghosts suddenly filled the ceiling. They gazed down upon the first years, some pointing at her and whispering, others giving friendly advice, and still others remained silent before passing through the door into the Great Hall. The ghosts had renewed the buzz of chatter from the younger students and Serenity found that the butterflies in her stomach redoubled as she realized she was about to step through those doors and walk past and stand in front of all those students...

Joey didn't know what to say. She didn't really care what happend to Malfoy. Whatever he got he usually deserved, but she wasn't going to let her "brothers", blood or no, give him a hard time for nothing. "Don't look too much into it, now. Though, I don't think the Potter-Malfoy relationship has exactly healed itself since our parents, I don't see us holding hands and skipping anytime in the near future. I just don't want you all bloodied up and calling daddy all on my account."

Joey bent down to scoop up a rock as they passed the lake, and chucked it in the lake. "I don't exactly know where to go either. Neither of us can get in our Common Rooms without me going through Jake, and you with Beth. Not, that I even have to stay with you once we get up to the castle," Joey said chucking another rock.

Orion glared at her in the dark, although she couldn't see it. Speaking about his father was always a sticky subject. "I don't need my father to fight my battles. If some Gryffindor wants to fight me because I walked with you after dark, then they are welcome to it. I wouldn't want to deny them the privelege of being recklessly and pointlessly brave simply because I happened upon you in the train. In fact, why don't I save you the trouble of trying to figure out how to get rid of me?" He stopped in the road while she continued to walk a few steps.

Joey stopped and turned back to glare back at Malfoy. "What is your problem? We spend five years of hating each other, and now you want to be my friend? Have you forgotten all the times you've terrorized me in Potions? Or tried to knock me off my broom? Or just called me Potter like it was some sort of curse? Sheesh, Malfoy. You should really cut me in on whatever bet you got going on my skin. I might give in for a bit of the profits. Because I know you wouldn't act this way for any other reason. Now, come on and stop pouting. We can just wait it together in the Entrance Hall.." Joey cautiously reached out to his arm to tug on him slightly, but pulled her hand away quickly. "Sorry to bring up your dad, by the way. I don't like my dad talked about either.." Joey said, as sincerely as she could.

McGonagall eyed the group with a practiced eye. They were the same each year at this point, although through the progression of time they began to make their mark, both on the school and on her. She wondered about Serenity Rosier-McMillan, not only whether or not she'd manage to make a mark but how. "It is now time for the sorting. Please follow me. Don't stop and keep up." She processed into the Great Hall, listening to the murmurs from the older students and keenly aware of how hard this must be for the tallest student in her group. At the podium, she approached the hat and turned to allow all the new students to take in its tattered glory.

Serenity processed with the rest of the students, maintaining her focus on McGonagall's back, rather than at the multitude of students she could vaguely see out of the corners of her eyes. She felt as if everyone were staring at her but, chalked that up to her nerves and imagination. Finally, they reached the end and stood in front of the staff table, waiting for something to happen. Serenity's mother had told her about the tattered hat which sat upon the stool. Soon, it would burst out in its annual sorting song...

Let's just resolve to get to the Entrance Hall in peace, and then we can go our separate ways. You can pretend we never walked to the castle together, and you can just keep my cloak."

For a brief moment it appeared that the hat wasn't going to perform. Several students, expecting to be entertained, peered up towards Professor Dumbledore for answers. The Headmaster though, just smiled his usual calm smile and waited patiently indicating that they should do the same. Finally after what seemed to the students to be 10 minutes a small tear in the hat opened up and two eyes appeared. The hat, fully animated now, came to life and smiled as it surveyed the fresh young faces staring back at it. As the student body craned their becks and ears to get a better position the hat broke out in it's familiar sing-song voice this year's sorting song.

Ooooh you see a tattered relic
As I sit upon this stool

Till I sort you in this school

You may think you have the answers
Like into which house each goes
But until you try me on your head

Joey was completely puzzled. Who was this new Malfoy.. or better yet, what was the old Malfoy really up to.. ? "Well, if that be the case, and you want to go on a non-hating spree, then don't think you should start off with someone a little bit farther down on the "Hate List?" Joey stopped walking again to just stare at Malfoy, her face still completely incredulous. "I can't believe I'm being made out to be the bad guy here. It's not my fault one of the other Gryffindors will beat your head in for being with me. And excuse me for trying to keep you safe. I wasn't trying to push you away, but I didn't know you wanted to be my buddy, now. " Joey, still completely confused, took a few more steps before turning on Malfoy again, "And why should I be so naive as to trust you?"

Orion didn't move towards Potter and turned his body away from her. "I don't need any more buddies, Potter. I'm just tired of being enemies. I don't mind the banter and the pranks, but I'm really sick of you thinking you understand me. So I make an effort not to be a total prat, and you throw it back at me. So don't trust me." He stayed put, hoping she'd get disgusted and just go up to the castle. He was calling himself all kinds of fool for caring what Joey Potter thought about him anyway.

McGonagall tapped a scroll against the stool once the hat was done singing. "Pay attention and approach the stool when your name is called." She sighed and unrolled the scroll. "Ackbee, Leon." A small boy with a riot of blond curls tripped up the steps and put the hat on his head. The hat thought for a few seconds before singing out, "Gryffindor!" The table along the far wall cheered and the boy raced towards them, sitting near the Winston twins. McGonagall continued through her list, finally reaching, "Rosier-McMillan, Serenity." A hum went through the room and it fell silent.

Lex looked at the cauldron cake with weary eyes. Her sister had a reputation as a jokester, too. "No, I think I'll wait for the banquet to begin." Lex then checks the head table to see who's missing. "I think it's old man, Hollace, that's missing. Doesn't he teach divination or something. He's usually the first one for dinner. It's strange he hasn't arrived yet." Lex watches Rusty and Jake come in and take their seats at the front of the hall. "Well, I see you little ride with Rusty didn't leave much of an impression on him. I'd thought he'd come and sat with you."

Serenity watched as student after student was called up and sorted into houses. Cheering broke out from one of the four house tables after each one. Finally, as the crowd standing at the front began to dwindle, her name was called and she could feel the undercurrent of whispers as she stepped forward. She took a deep breath as she turned and sat upon the stool. McGonagall placed the hat upon her head and for a moment, nothing happened.

Serenity was prepared for this delay and didn't panic, in fact, it seemed the longer she stayed there, the more relaxed she felt. Finally, she heard a voice in her ear. "A little old for sorting..." it said and for a brief moment she was afraid she wouldn't get sorted but, the hat continued.

"I was wondering when you'd come here. Now, where to put you?" it said and began deliberating. After what felt like several minutes, though it was probably not that long at all, Serenity heard the hat shouting out her house to the assembled students, "Slytherin!"

The hat was removed and she slowly stood to walk over to the Slytherin House table. She didn't know anyone over there and cast a glance over at the Gryffindor table as she sat down at a free spot, actually a bit disappointed to have not been sorted into that house. Why hadn't she thought to ask the hat to sort her to Gryffindor instead of Slytherin?

"What do you mean, you're sick of me thinking I understand you? I do understand you. Or wait... up until tonight, I thought I understood you. " Joey said honestly. "And don't worry about my trust. Trust is earned...," Joey said cautiously. "Look, I threw out my idea of us splitting up so no one that thinks they have ownership over me tries to bully you for no good reason. That doesn't seem to be settling with you. You have something better? You want to just go walk right up to the Great Hall and go in? If you'll stop pouting, I'll do it." Joey put her hands on her hips, and waited for the next big surprise from Malfoy.

"Your hair..is gorgeous," Ophelia said, as the red haired new Slytherin came and sat close to her. She gave herself one last look in her pocket mirror, shook her blonde hair back into place, and turned to look at the new girl closer. "The name's Ophelia, and I'm a seventh year. What exactly are you?" she asked just before doing a thorough examination of her pink nails.
