Staging pranks

I originally thought Peeves had no limits, now I'm going back to that kind of thinking, too! It's only the Baron he fears, after all.

And that makes me wonder - What could the Baron possibly do to Peeves, after all, they're both ghosts? Or have we discussed this already? But seriously, what could he do to him? I just don't get it. Makes me curious about the ghost pecking order.

Discussion: I think it's because, for some reason, Peeves has a measure of respect for the Baron, in the same way that he does for Albus. No one can really do anything to Peeves, if you think about it. He would've probably been gone ages if they could manage it. It's because of his infallibility (is that a word? ) that he can be as crazy as he is, and choose who he wants to respect.

True, I was thinking the same thing, what could anyone possibly do to him that would stop him? It's interesting that he does choose to have that respect for the Baron, something must have happened along the way that caused him to earn that respect from Peeves. I wonder what iti could have been?

Discussion: Haha. Very true. I was re-reading PS, and when Harry scares off Peeves by pretending to be the Baron, Peeves doesn't seem like he respects the Baron at all. It seemed more out of fear, and Peeves certainly made a hasty disappearance. URG! I wish JKR would tell us what it is already!

Discussion - Fear, yes, I wonder about that, too. I can't imagine what Peeves could fear, could it be some secret that the Baron will reveal, or do you think he could actually inflict physical pain on him or maybe harm someone he cares about who is still living? Is that even possible?

Yes, I would love to hear more on this from JKR. There are so many books she could write about her wonderful characters, and wouldn't it be great if she decided to devote one entirely to the ghosts?

Discussion: Hmm....interesting point. Maybe Peeves' fear (if it is a fear, that is) of the Baron is strictly for his own physical protection. The Baron always did strike me as a violent ghost...the kind that would try to drive people nuts and tear apart friendships. But after finding out the story between him and the Grey Lady, I just don't know anymore. He doesn't really strike me as violent, per se, but rather just frustrated and perpetually upset. How that may connect to Peeves, though, I have no idea.

HAHAHA. That's true....that is a good point. Man...this is going to bug me for ages. I mean...technically pain is all psychological in that we can feel pain without stimuli, and we can also lessen the feeling of pain when stimuli are present. I want JKR to just tell us already!!!!

Although Peeves remains at Hogwarts (as far as we know), do you think he ever ventured to Hogsmeade to terrorize the villagers?

I don't know. I can definitely see him venturing off into Hogsmeade to mess with people. Especially on Hogsmeade weekends for the Hogwarts students. But then again, I wrote this question before we really got a lot of discussing under our belts, and now that I think of it, Peeves is probably tied somehow to Hogwarts. What do you all think?

I think Peeves is tied to Hogwarts. However, we know that there are secret tunnels to Hogsmeade from Hogwarts, so long as he travels those, technically he's still connected to Hogwarts isn't he? I don't think he uses them though. I think his one true love is the castle and he will always be a part of it. I think Peeves would be lost in any other place. He knows Hogwarts inside and out and I think thats what makes him such a powerful poltergeist - to have that knowledge gives him a huge advantage over any of the staff or students.

I think that's true, though. The secret to Peeves' success is that he is monogamous, so to speak, to Hogwarts....inhabitants as objects of his pranks. I don't think Hogsmeade residents would appreciate the pranks for what they were.

I agree. I really don't see Peeves ever leaving Hogwarts for any reason. He has ties there and I can't imagine him ever going anywhere else, even for a brief time.

Discussion: I haven't been here in a while, but I like this topic. And I say the ghosts can definitely travel outside of Hogwarts. Don't know why I think this, but I have a feeling Peeves would have been curious to find out more about the Shrieking Shack, and he has to get lonely during the summers when no students are at school....can't you just see him popping in and out of Hogsmeade's joke shop to keep one step ahead of the kids?

I agree. They are ghosts, after all, and should be able to have free reign of where they go to. I would be surprised if there were anything that would actually keep them grounded to Hogwarts, I would believe they can come and go where they want. However, there is definitely something that keeps them there, some sentimental tie or something.
