05 Constant Vigilance You both bring up some interesting points - I definitely agree that he probably wasn't a model kid - but I do think he was an overall good kid who just got into a bit of trouble - very much like the Weasley twins or even Harry. As far as being bullied - that is entirely possible that he could have turned out the way he was in his adult life because he didn't want to be pushed around. It was his turn to do the pushing! Perhaps his motto of constant vigilance came from his days of being on the look-out for nearby bullies!  |

When I think of Moody's childhood, I picture him really outspoken or really shy - but I can't imagine him in between. He is meant to be a realy extreme character and the middle-of-the-road just doesn't suit him. So I picture him being a very intelligent, hard working teen who probably set on becoming an auror from the second he thought about a career and worked incessantly toward that goal. | |

Yeah! I like that idea! He definately couldnt be stuck somewhere in the middle, it doesnt work.
I think he had that job on his mind all through his life too. Thats probably why hes so good at it! He was preparing himself his whole life!
But I cant decide if thats because he was in a bad family of a really good one.....

You know how sometimes JKR gives her characters names that coincide with their personalities? For example: Albus = white, Dumbledore = bumblebee (JKR has said that she pictured him wandering around the castle humming to himself). So perhaps Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody is no different - maybe he was a moody, temperamental child??? Also, Alastor means 'avenger' in Greek - he spent his entire life defending others and seeking justice as an auror. I doubt he was any different as a child - I think he would have been someone who stuck up for those who were being bullied and those who sought to do the right thing for everyone involved, though his form of justice might be a bit different from the norm. | |

^^ You bring up an interesting possibility - it could be entirely possible that someone he knew was taken from him at a young age. Perhaps he shares that in common with Harry, although not necessarily both parents. Or maybe it was a sibling or friend. Or maybe it wasn't anything as severe as death but still something that he felt wronged for. It could be something as simple as someone stealing something valuable from him, which caused him to want to make the person pay for their wrongs.
Back onto the Harry thing, I think we can infer a lot about Moody from Harry because I think the two are very similar. Besides the obvious about both becoming aurors, I think the word "moody" is appropriate for both. They both are the type of characters whose emotions are often lingering on the extreme. And I think they both have tougher skin than most people. And there is more but I'm having trouble thinking about it. Maybe this could be another discussion topic LoL... jk.
