I agree with the 'betrothed' thing and that they developed their relationship in their marriage, instead of being Hogwarts sweethearts. I also think that Draco is the strongest piece of their marriage.. maybe what holds it together.. ? But I do think that Lucius had an interest in Narcissia and that they knew each other at Hogwarts, both being Slytherin and all.

I bet with the lack of pure blood options out there, there were a lot of pre-arranged marriages. It would be the only way to guarantee that your child married a pure blood. I also think that the family wanted to make sure that Slytherins were with Slytherins. Keeping the same beliefs together. | |

And, I don't think so. I don't see the relationship between Lucius and Draco being as deep or strong as others may believe it to be. No doubt, Lucius loves and cares for his son, but I think there's something hidden there. I see Draco as more of an anchor for Lucius and Narcissia's relationship, and of course the next branch on the Malfoy tree. | |

In the first five-six novels, I would have been all for saying "no, he would not have died to save his son, even from Voldemort." He was all about himself and maybe Narcissa, but he just wanted to please Voldemort really. He would have done anything to please the Dark Lord and be his number one most faithful.
However, now, after reading the final book in the series, I complete disagree with everything I previously thought. Lucius loved his son! While I am not a parent yet, I am a daughter, and I know that the most precious bonds that one has is the parent-child relationship. Parents will do anything for their children, sometimes even sacrificing their own livelihood. I firmly believe this to be the case for Lucius, especially when we see him running through the castle, frantic about losing his son. He was scared, as any parent would be; he didn't care about winning or losing at that moment because all he wanted was the most precious thing in his life back. He wanted his legacy... | |

Yes, I agree with Jess, Lucius showed a surprising side that he really did care for his family. I wouldn't have thought it possible, either, but I was really touched by his decision to leave the Death Eaters and stay with his family. | |

Dunno if this is off-topic, but I would have loved to see more of the Lucius-Narcissa interaction. I thought those moments in the first chapter of DH were really insightful as to the Malfoy family rship. But I would have wanted more; perhaps more from Lucius' perspective. We see some bits of Narcissa's dedication to her husband in the chap. Spinner's End, too... | |
