Erm... what about discussing what Slughorn did during his "retirement"? Like before he went back to Hogwarts for the second time? What caused him to leave in the first place? Corruption like at the ministry or something else?

I'd like to think he left for a similar reason to the one you just mentioned. It probably was Ministry Corruption. I mean the timing coincides with what we saw happen later in the canon. Corruption often starts slowly, before it escalates.

It could also have been the need to hide. When we first meet up with Slughorn, he's on the run.

Oh, on that game, you just guess people or objects that Slughorn can "take to the moon", then try to figure out what the category/answer is.

Jess - Thanks for thinking up a good discussion topic! I think Ministry corruption does sound like a probable cause for his retiring, though he may have simply felt it was time for him to take it easy and lead a life of luxury without having to worry about such mundane things. Even in the wizarding world work is still work, after all!

Sorry I didn't explain how the game works: Someone (me in this case) thinks up a group of things, for example "only boys", "only evil creatures", "only round things", "only things that start with an A", that has to be guessed.

Discussion: My first thought was that Slughorn simply felt it was time to retire at a certain age. He likes teaching, but it is not as important to him as to Dumbledore. He would also have enjoyed a quieter life outside the school. He might have experimented a little with potions and would of course have maintained good contacts with the former Slug Club members.
But maybe he made the decision to leave the school at a time when it was wise to do so. That is to say, when Voldemort was powerful for the first time, so he, Slughorn, wouldn't be associated with Dumbledore and the Order.

Congratulations to SlytherinFox, our new Club President! I will have some other officer announcements in the next week or so.

Discussion: I always thought Slughorn left Hogwarts the first time because Voldemort was getting so powerful that Slughorn was getting paranoid that Voldie would find him so he went into hiding. Perhaps he thought Voldemort would trick/coerce him into betraying Dumbledore's secrets.

*tries to jump in discussion* Discussion: Yeah... it might be because of Voldemort's powers, Slughorn was afraid of and didn't want to be forced into doing something he didn't want to do. Or maybe it's something more personal that caused him to. Family? Did he even have a family? O_o

Thanks, everyone! I'm very happy to accept the President position to help keep the club going and get it strong again. Let's all show our love for Sluggo, he truly is a great guy!

Fear, yes, that was probably a very big motivating factor as well. I know that he was deeply, deeply afraid of Voldemort (with good reason), and that could very well have been the reason he retired. He may have gone deep into hiding somewhere where no one could ever find him again. Who knows?
