The next morning Olivia woke up to some snickering. She opened her eyes and found that her hair was sticking up all over the place and she must have looked a right sight. Ron was laughing at her, she threw him a dirty look and rushed from the room before someone else saw her. She made it to the bathroom in time to fix herself up before rushing down to the Great Hall for breakfast. She sat down next to Harry and piled some eggs and potatoes on her plate with lots of ketchup.

“You know I think you eat more than Ron does.” Hermione told her looking up from Ancient Runes translations.

Olivia looked at her, “Years of having to eat from the rubbish bends teachers you to eat when you have the chance.” She said looking at her. Hermione’s cheeks flushed crimson.

“I’m sorry Olivia I didn’t mean to…” she stammered looking embarrassed at having brought up a painful memory for Olivia to think about. They had spent the summer months glossing over Olivia’s former life. She didn’t often speak about and they never asked. It was just an unspoken thing, her life started when she walked into number 12 Grimmuald Place as far as any of them were concerned.

“It’s alright Hermione.” Olivia told her. She gave her a smile after she finished swallowing her food.

Professor McGonagall was walking up and down the aisles handing out schedules. “Ms. Black here you are.” She said handing her a slip of parchment.

She had potions first. She was dreading this class most of all. The stories that Harry and Ron told her about Professor Snape scared her. Not the sort of scared that she wanted to run and hid, but scared that the old Jefenda would rear her head and get cheeky and lose house points. She noticed that Harry and Ron had a lot more free periods than she did. That wasn’t fair she thought. Ron could stand to spend more time in the classroom than she did. She could work spells and charms better than him from just a few weeks learning from Hermione.

“Bad luck having Potions first with Slytherin. We had to do it too.” Ron said chasing his sentence with some bacon.

“Just don’t let Snape get to you.” Harry said giving her a pat on the back. Olivia turned and beamed at him. It was just the sort of thing a brother would do, and it seemed that Olivia and Harry were falling nicely into the role of brother and sister and they were both happier for it. She nodded her head and finished eating her breakfast. She checked to make sure she had the right books. She smiled as she touched the books; they were Sirius’ old school books. He had wanted to buy her new ones but she insisted on using his. A chime rang throughout the whole school signaling the start the of the days lesson. She bid them all good bye as they headed off to charms. She threw her bag over her shoulder as she headed toward the dungeons for Potions. As she passed the Slytherin table she caught Draco looking at her. She looked back at him and he looked away. She wanted to say something but she bite her tongue and hurried down to the dungeons so she wouldn’t be late.

She walked in and sat down at an empty table, so didn’t really know anyone in her year yet so she hoped a Gryffindor would sit next to her. Before she could properly look around Professor Snape walked into the room and it got deathly quiet. All eyes followed him as he walked to the front of the class.. “This year Draco Malfoy shall be my potions assistant.” He said as Draco sat down at a desk in the corner. “Do not bore me with your questions. Direct them to Mr. Malfoy.” Draco looked up from his desk and locked eyes with Olivia, she felt something in her stomach flutter. Why is he looking at me like that? She wondered as she finally tore her little brown eyes away from him.

Professor Snape moved into the shadows of the dungeons. “Some of you maybe wondering why you have to learn about potions.” He said softly, “It is a very exact art that requires skill and a steady hand. I wonder if this class will live up to my very high expectations. I can teach you how to brew fame and bottle luck. I can teach you how you how to slow deaths tracks.” He said as he stalked through the rows of tables. “If you are not a bunch of idiots that I usual have to teach.” He pulled out a piece of parchment to call roll. When he got to the B’s he looked up at Olivia.

“Ah Olivia Black.” He said as he slowly advanced on her. She held her head up and he stood in front of her. “The noble house of Black is rising again it seems.” He rolled up the parchment and stuffed it in his pocket, he seemed to be done with it after he got to the name he was looking for. “I wonder if you will be like your noble father or like your uncle.” Olivia gripped the edge of her table as Snape mentioned her uncle. Sirius had told her and even shown her memories from his school days with James and Snape. They were so horrible to each other, but Snape gave as good as he got from both James and Sirius.. “Let’s play a little game shall we.” He said giving her a cruel smile as he walked to the front of the room and moving a cauldron in front of everyone with his wand. “If Ms Black can make for me simple restorative draught I will give the entire class 20 points and class will be dismissed for the day.” He said as he grinned evilly at her.

Olivia however smiled serenely at him. Hermione had taught her how to brew every potion in all her school books. She stood up and walked to the front of the class. “Of course Professor Snape.” She gave him a curtsy and went to work on the draught. She gathered all her ingredients and went to work.

“No book Ms. Black?” He asked with a raised eyebrow.

“No sir. I know this by heart.” She said as she added some dried roots to the gurgling cauldron. He looked at her with a surprised look on her face. She added more ingredients and kept a watchful eye of her potions. After a few minutes when the surface when shiny and silvery she scooped out some and filled a small vile that Draco had set out on the table for her. She handed it to Professor Snape who stood up from his desk and retrieved the vile from her outstretched hand.

“I need a volunteer.” He said looking out over the class. No one stood up to volunteer. “Mr. Nickols.” He said pointing his wand at a terrified little boy in the back of the classroom. The boy stood up and looked at Snape as he wanted to flee the classroom more than he wanted to breathe. “Stupfy.” Snape said as a jet of red sparks burst from his wand and hit the boy square in the chest. The poor boy crumpled in a heap on the floor. The whole class jumped out of the seats in care Snape needed more volunteers. Snape drove the butts back into their chairs with one look as he walked over to the boy. He lifted his head and carefully tipped a few drops of the draught into his mouth. All most at once the boys eyes fluttered and he looked around and wondered why he was on the floor and everyone was looking at him. The whole class burst into a round of applause. Olivia had a huge smile on her face. Professor Snape’s lips curled into his version of a happy smile.

“20 points to everyone and class is dismissed for the day,” He announced to many rounds of cheering. Many students came up to Olivia to thank her and congratulate her. They all pumped her hand profusely, some of them promising gifts of sweets. Soon the dungeon cleared out as the students ran off to spread the word of Olivia’s triumphs. Olivia made it back to her desk to find a small green box with a silver bow on top of her bag.

She looked at the box wondering who could have sent it to her. She reached for the box and picked it up. It looked simple enough and safe to open. She took the top off the box and peered inside. It was the beautiful silver and jade snake with its tail stuck in its mouth. The eyes were made with small rubies and there were Runes etched along the top. Her eyes squinted to get a better look at the runes. “Olivia, you are my curse.” She blinked a few times trying to think of who could have sent this to her. Harry would never call her a curse. She looked around the dungeon and saw Draco hurry out of the room with a pink tinge creeping up his face. Draco gave this to me? Her heart start racing and it fluttered in her chest. She let the smallest smile play at the corners of her mouth. She reached to the touch it and the snake lifted its head out of the box and blinked at her. She dropped the box on the table and stepped back. She snake slithered out of the box and slinked up her arm to her wrist. It wrapped itself around her wrist and it chased its tail till it was a nice fit on her wrist. When it fit her just right it ate its tail and became still. She turned her wrist this way and that was getting a good look at the bracelet on her arm. She loved it, but how was she going to explain it to Harry? Her face fell when she thought of that. She gathered up her bag and walked out heading toward the Gryffindor common room. She still had almost an hour before Transfigurations started.

She guessed she made a wrong turn at one of the staircases on the fourth floor because now she was somewhere totally unfamiliar. She turned around to head back the way she came when she walked clear into someone and she fell back and lost her balance. She was about to let loose a string of foul words when she looked up into Draco’s face. He held out his hand for her to take. She slowly reached for his hand and he gently pulled her up. He looked at her wrist to the bracelet and he smiled.

“Oh um..Hi.” she said nothing really knowing how to make her mouth say anything else.

“Hello.” He said as he peered down at her. “Do you like it?” he asked pointing to her wrist.

“I love it,” she told him before she could stop herself. “What does the inscription mean?”

He really started to blush as this question and he had gotten so quiet that Olivia didn’t know if he was going to speak again. “I’m not supposed to even talk to you, but when I saw you on the train that day I just…” He couldn’t explain what he was feeling. She didn’t know what it was that made her do it, but she reached for his hand and took it in hers. She could feel his heart beat in his hand.

Olivia had never had a boy to give her a gift before. True when she lived in the group home she was a dirty ragamuffin. Standing there holding onto Draco’s hand as his face flushed a deep red and her little brown face was a deep shade of red as well she realized that for the first time in her life she had a crush. She actually liked a boy. She let go of his hand quickly. “I… um have to go.” She said turning on her heels and running all the way down the corridor. She made it back to the Gryffindor common room after falling on that trick step that you were supposed to skip. Hermione was sitting by the fire translating some runes onto a 2 foot piece of parchment, Olivia went and sat down with her.

“Nice work in potions.” Hermione said as she looked up from her stack of books.

“Thanks,” She held out her wrist for Hermione to look at the bracelet.

“That is really nice. Harry gave it to you?” She asked. She looked up when Olivia didn’t answer right away. “Who gave it to you then?”

“Draco” She said so softly. Hermione looked at her, her expression not revealing how she honestly felt.

“I wondered when you two would get together.” Hermione finally said with a cheeky grin on her face. Olivia looked up at her with a creeping blush on her cheeks. “Does Harry know?”

She shook her head. “I don’t think Harry would like this very much.” She said slowing turning the bracelet around and around her wrists.
Hermione put down her quill and closed her book. “Harry will get used to it if that is what you want. Harry loves you Olivia. He’s never had a sister and you’ve never had a brother so you both have gotten close to each other to make up for that.” Hermione explained to her. Olivia smiled at her Hermione always seemed to know exactly what to say to make her feel better. The bell went off for the next class to start. They both started to pack up everything.

“Thanks Hermione. I will talk to Harry later.” Olivia said as she made her way out of the portrait hole. She walked up to the Transfigurations class and there was a queue outside the door. Professor McGonagall strode up to the door and it opened for her.

“Everyone in, let’s go.” She said and everyone made a mad dash to find a seat quickly. Olivia sat in the second row. She didn’t want to appear over eager. “Transfiguration is a dangerous and exact art. No messing about in my class.” She gave them a stern talking to. She turned around and changed her desk into a chestnut stallion and then changed it back. The whole class got excited and started chatting away. She looked at them and quickly regained their silent composure. She handed out matches and set them to trying to turn them into needles. Olivia sat at her desk a little upset that they were starting so simple. She quickly changed her match into a needle and back again. She looked over her should as McGonagall was busy with another student. Olivia changed her match into a lady bug and watched it dance across her desk. “Ms. Black.” She jumped when she heard her name. She was in trouble; and with her head of house no less. Olivia turned around in her chair to look up at Professor McGonagall sheepishly.

“Yes Professor?” She asked innocently.

“How did you learn to do that? Animal transfigurations are very difficult.” McGonagall said looking at the perfect lady bug that was now flying happily around Olivia’s head.

“I just know how Professor.” Olivia explained. When Hermione wasn’t teaching her she had been in her room reading through all the textbooks in her father’s bedroom. She had made it through all the 7th year textbooks. Her patronous was just as good as Harry’s.

“Turn your textbook into a toadstool.” She instructed. Olivia nodded and turned around in her chair and look at her book. She tapped it with her wand and it changed into an array of mushrooms. Professor McGonagall clapped loudly. “20 points to Gryffindor.” She said with a huge smile on her face. “See me after class Ms. Black.” She said as she moved to help some of the other students with their matches.

yay a post!!! loved it and I agree with jade, i don't think harry's gonna take it too well.

Olivia had no idea why McGonagall wanted to see her. She had given her points right? So she wasn’t in any trouble was she? She sat through the rest of the class fidgeting with her quill and her ladybug. When the bell finally rung to signal the end of the class she slowly packed up her bags. The rest of the class chatted away happily as they went off to their various classes and to lunch. She followed McGonagall out of the room down the corridor to her office. She tapped her wand on the knob and the door jumped open. Professor McGonagall walked in first and pulled off her robes and sat down in her chair motioning for Olivia to sit down.

“You can relax you are not in trouble.” She told her, and Olivia let out a sigh of relief. “I am most impressed with you Ms. Black. I do not think even Ms. Granger was this accomplished this early on.” She went on as she pushed a tin of biscuits her way. Olivia reached in and took a shortbread cookie out and nibbled on the end of it. “Ms. Black I believe keeping you in your current year would be a bit pointless and even keeping you in your second year again would be pointless.” She said looking at her. Olivia looked up at her, surprise on her face. “I am moving you up to the third year class.” She announced. “I will expect you to maintain your level of studies and conduct yourself as a third year. Is that understood?” she said giving her a slight smile.
