okay so i have a question.
Dobby warned Harry something bad was gonna happen at Hogwarts that year.
he obviously knew that from listening to the Malfoys.
but i thought when Lucius gave Ginny the diary, he didnt know what he was doing.
i thought he just gave it to her because he needed to get rid of things that could connect him to the dark lord in his house.
or he gave it to her because he hated the Weasleys and he thought something might happen to them with the diary?
i know he had no contact with voldemort and he didnt even kno he was alive.
did he think the diary might have brought him back to life or something??
your thoughts, please?

Lucius might have an idea about Horcruxes then, he despised the Weasley's yes and that might have been another reason why he had slipped the diary on ginny's things. Maybe it was all part of the plan.

Hm. I think that he want to get Mr. Weasley in trouble. Just think, Mr. Weasley have spent years protecting Muggles with the laws, and now his daughter is found to be attacking Muggleborn? Remember, Dumbledore told Harry that the Death Eater didn't know the meaning of Voldemort's statement about how he have gone "further than anybody" on the path of immortal life. (I'm not sure about what he said exactly, I don't have HBP or GoF with me now.) And by that statement, Voldemort meant his Horcruxes.

I'd have thought that he suspected something was up because of the Dark Mark. Wasn't that supposed to turn darker or move or something when Voldemort was getting more powerful? So, if the tattoo changed, he'd know something was up - just not necessarily what.

Dumbledore said that Voldemort didnt tell Lucius that the diary was a horcrux, but he might have said that it would cause the Chamber to open again:
“No doubt he thought that Lucius would not dare do anything with the Horcrux other than guard it carefully, but he was counting too much upon Lucius’s fear of a master who had been gone for years and whom Lucius believed dead. Of course, Lucius did not know what the diary really was. I understand that Voldemort had told him the diary would cause the Chamber of Secrets to reopen because it was cleverly enchanted.”

here's my theory:
He was trying to get rid of things connecting him to voldemort, and he thought it had something to do with the chamber, so he thought by giving it to Ginny not only would it cause turmoil at hogwarts but it would also bring down the Weasleys.

I think he had a good idea what it would do, he just didn't realize that it was a bit of Voldemort's soul. And the theory of him trying to get rid of dark things is quite possible too.

I think Malfoy might have had an idea about what Voldemort had done to protect himself from death, (i.e. the horcruxes) but I think you're right. He didn't want Voldemort to come back, per se, because then he would be beholden to him again. And Lucius Malfoy doesn't strike me as the kind of man who wants to live his life doing the bidding of another (extremely insane) person. I think Malfoy just wanted to get rid of some stuff that might connect him to Voldemort, because the ministry was getting ready to raid the houses of known Death Eaters again. And Malfoy was a known death eater.

Of course, he could have known about what the diary could do, because why else would he put the diary into a student's cauldron? Maybe Voldemort had left instructions for Malfoy before he died, that in the event that something like this happened (i.e. his "dying"), he was to take the diary to Hogwarts as soon as he was capable, thus sparking the catalyst that made the Chamber of Secrets open.

I dont think he had the attention of Tom Riddle using Ginny in the Chamber of Secrets. He just didnt like the family.

I think he knew it opened Chamber of Secrets, as Dobby had overheard, but just that. And if such a thing was found in a Muggle-lover's daughter (and his long hating family), it would be a very good shot.

Draco told Harry and Ron that the last time the chamber had been opened was before Lucius's time, but Abraxas Malfoy (Lucius's father) was probably at Hogwarts when it happened and could've been friends with Tom Riddle. I think all of the information Lucius had about the diary came from Abraxas, not Voldemort.

well when voldemort gave mr.malfoy the diary he just said it was used to open the chamber of secrets so he gave it to ginny thinking he was going to just open the chamber of secrets

Well he knew it was dark because Voldemort gave it to him but he did not necessarily know what it did. I think he gave it to Ginny in the hope that it would hurt her and the rest of the Weasleys.

Well, Voldemort probably had some way to communicate with his Death Eaters. He probably said to give it to someone vulnerable (like Ginny Weasley) so that she would be easier to posses.

Well I don't think he knew it was a horcrux. Or maybe he did, but he thought that Vol- sorry, You Know Who was dead so it wouldn't matter what happened to it.

i think he knew it opened the chamber of secrets and talked about it at home which is how dobby knew he didn't know it was a horcrux as it says in 1 of the books he would of been a lot more careful with a piece of voldermorts soul i don't think he intentionally set out to put it ginnys cauldron the odds of running into the weasleys on that particular day and time i think he was planning to give it to draco to plant on somebody maybe harry as it was him he was trying to kill dobby warned harry as if he knew bad things would happen to him

Lucius never knew it was a horcrux. I guess he knew it had something to do with the chamber of secrets. He might have slipped it into Ginny's cauldron hoping something would happen and it would consequently degrade Arthur as well. Plus, he would have been mentioning his expectations, as it was the Dark Lord's own diary.
