I agree that the address is for the owl to know where to deliver. Also, it could have been Lockhart's excuse to have Harry serve detention with him. In addition, it could have just been for professional reasons, making the letters seem sophisticated.

I think it is necessary because we don't know if Lockhart was going to use the school owls or not, if so he would need the address because the owl will have never been there before. If not he might have still needed the address for the people who had never written to him before.

With Hedwig I think its different sometimes, because not only is she incredibly smart, but she has usually been where Harry is sending the letters. So if he says, "This is for Ron", she already knows where to go. But with something like the fan mail, the owls would have no clue who all these people are without an address.
So yeah, I think under normal circumstances an address is always required. ^^Very good point.

Haha. That's true. Err. But I think it was more for formality, since I also believe that the owls do not need an address to find a person, that's why their magical. ^^, haha. I dunno, this is kinda confusing
