Basseterre, St Kitts, CMC – West Indies were left needing a huge batting performance to save the Second Digicel Test after Pakistan dismissed their top order, leaving them well adrift of a victory target of 427 on Monday.
The hosts ended the fourth day at Warner Park on 130-5, still needing a further 297 runs on the final day Tuesday to win the match and complete a 2-0 sweep of the series.
Stylish left-hander Dwayne Bravo defied a turning pitch and the Pakistani spinners to stroke an even 50 but his demise late in the day left the Windies with a major task to at least avoiding defeat.
At the close Vice-captain Brendan Nash was unbeaten on 30 at the close while opener Lendl Simmons hit 24.
Left-arm spinner Abdur Rehman wreaked havoc with three for 26 though dangerous off-spinners Saeed Ajmal and Mohammed Hafeez have both gone wicket-less in 27 overs between them.
Earlier, opener Taufeeq Umar registered his fifth Test century and captain Misbah-ul-Haq struck his third, as Pakistan declared their second innings at 377-6 after resuming the day on 202-3.
Taufeeq equalled his highest Test score with 135 – his first hundred in nearly eight years – while Misbah scored an unbeaten 102, in a partnership that yielded 129 runs for the fourth wicket.
Set a big target, West Indies were in early trouble when teenaged opener Kraigg Brathwaite lost his off-stump to seamer Tanvir Ahmed off the fifth ball he faced, playing back to an off-cutter in the third over.
Bravo then counter-attacked in a 54-run second wicket stand with Simmons, smashing two thunderous sixes straight back overhead off Abdur Rehman, while also counting two fours in his 144-ball knock.
The right-handed Simmons hit two fours off 57 balls but never looked settled and sliced Abdur Rehman to Hafeez at slip at 59 for two. The experienced Ramanresh Sarwan faced just four balls before being given out lbw on referral in the bowler’s next over, after the initial appeal was turned down.
Marlon Samuels, top scorer in the first innings, had no such luck this time around as he laboured 33 balls over six against the spin triumvirate before edging a nearly unplayable delivery from Abdur Rehman to keeper Mohammad Salman at 77-4.
Earlier, the left-handed Taufeeq, who resumed the day on 97, cracked 13 fours and faced 314 balls overall while Misbah struck 10 fours and two sixes off 141 balls.
Their partnership punished West Indies and was only ended via the run out route, 13 minutes before lunch, when Taufeeq made a lethargic attempt to reach his ground in attempting a quick single, and failed to beat captain Darren Sammy’s direct hit.
Pakistan chased quick runs after lunch with with Umar Akmal hammering a typically quick-fire 30 from 25 balls. Leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo claimed 2-149.

Basseterre, St Kitts, CMC – West Indies were defeated by 196 runs by Pakistan in the Second Digicel Test on Tuesday, as the two-match Digicel Series ended 1-1 at Warner Park.
Resuming the fifth and final day on 130-5 in search of 427 for victory, the hosts lost their final five wickets for 100 to be bowled out for 230, 15 minutes before the lunch break.
Captain Darren Sammy counter-attacked with 41 but found no support from the lower order as left-arm spinner Abdur Rehman (4-65) and off-spinner Saeed Ajmal (3-79) were the best bowlers
West Indies were undone by the early loss of vice-captain Brendan Nash who fell in the day’s third over to a catch at slip off Ajmal, without adding to his overnight 30.
Sammy stroked six fours in a spirited 41 from 51 balls, adding 36 for the seventh wicket with Carlton Baugh (18) to hold up Pakistan’s victory charge. Left-hander Ravi Rampaul crashed two sixes and two fours in a bold 20 close to the end.
When Baugh was trapped lbw to Abdur Rehman, wickets continued to fall steadily as the Windies faced the inevitable.

Selection notes:
1. Kemar Roach is being rested for the Trinidad leg of the West Indies v India Series 2011. It is expected that other players with heavy workloads will also be rested and rotated from time to time throughout the West Indies v India Series 2011 and moving forward.
2. Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard are not eligible to represent the West Indies in T20 format as they did not take part in the last edition of the Caribbean Twenty20. (The WICB Selection Criteria outline that for a player to be eligible for selection to the West Indies team he must participate in the corresponding format of the game at the regional level.)
3. Although he has been allowed to return to low intensity cricket in Trinidad Adrian Barath is still undergoing rehabilitation and an assessment will be done during the Trinidad leg of the West Indies v India Series 2011. A decision on his return to international cricket will be taken following the assessment and it is hoped he will be available for the Digicel Test Series – West Indies v India.
4. Chris Gayle will not be considered for selection to the West Indies team before an intended meeting with himself, the Selection Committee, the WICB Management and the West Indies Team Management. The Selection Committee views this meeting as necessary as a result of Gayle’s comments in a widely publicized radio interview in Jamaica.
5. The Selection Committee is of the view that Jerome Taylor is required to play a full season of regional cricket in order to prove his fitness to compete adequately at the international level before being considered for selection.
