Default Care of Magical Creatures Lesson ❧ 2

CARE OF MAGICAL CREATURES LESSON

Ever since the disastrous lesson in the Rose Garden, Mathys' curriculum had been limited to almost exclusively theoretical lessons for the students of Hogwarts. Unless the care involved the cleanliness of the environment creatures dwell in on the Beaxbatons grounds, the only creatures students had seen were those in print within the pages of their textbooks and in a proper classroom setting indoors. Though the Care of Magical Creature professor had made some attempt to liven the experience up by animating the creatures off their pages to life size when appropriate to do so. Though these docile magical manifestations could hardly appease a true creature enthusiast and, to him, it felt as though he were administering detention each lesson.

This afternoon was to be different and students had been instructed as such at the conclusion of lessons last week.

The first outdoors lesson since the week long scrub down of La Volière, the comfortable wicker couches that seated five were arranged in two rows in semi-circle formation facing his chalet. Mathys himself stood just in front of them flanked on either side by some very familiar friends. And these friends were looking a bit green, literally, around the edges from moss and other lichen.

"Please refrain from speakeeng een raised voices as your find your seats," he cautions as the Hogwarts students make their approach.

index de leçon
question one | what do you know about illnesses that infect creatures?
creature preparation | get dressed in your gear
main activity I | luring your gargoyle

OOC: Salutations and welcome to our second and final Care of Magical Creatures lesson together this term. As is alluded to in the thread description, lessons since the Rose Garden incident have been almost exclusively theoretical (think Umbridge's DADA lessons but without all the pink and hostility) unless its been janitorial related. If you would like to discuss any specifics between your character and Professor de Nostredame, please do not hesitate to send a PM to this account and we can sort some things out.

Before posting, make sure you are familiar with the rules and regulations for the subject.

Class will officially begin in approximately 24 hours from the time of this post.

Blake's draw nearly dropped at the idea of an actual Care of Magical Creatures class .... because what they had been doing for the majority of the year seems ridiculous ... what was with these Frenchmen ...

Being careful not to make to much noise since the Professor had asked them not to raise their voices .. he took a seat on one of the couches ... since was the first one to arrive it looked like ... He gave the professor a friendly nod, wave, and smile and waited for others to join him.

Cole usually liked the CoMC subject and learning about creatures and how to care for them but since the rose garden incident he had thought many times about skipping the class all together. He had even gone as far as writing a letter about it to his father but he had never sent it. Theoretical lessons Cole we're all well and good but it didn't beat getting to work hands on with creatures in the flesh. Animated pictures just weren't the same.

Cole made his way into the makeshift outdoor classroom giving a silent wave to Professor De Nostredame before his eyes landed on the gargoyles. No not them again was Cole's impulsive reaction as he went over and took a seat on one of the wicker couches furthest away from the gargoyles. Was this lesson going to end in disaster too? Warily he kept his eyes on the gargoyles as he waited for the lesson to start.

The lack of actual creatures in lessons was disappointing and every time Cecelia turned up to class, she couldn't help but feel the weight of what had happened in the rose garden. She felt VERY much like the not interacting with creatures was partly her fault (the headmistress had done a good job of making her feel like a troublemaker) and she wondered if the other kids blamed her and the others, too. They'd all witnessed what had happened, after all. It made her a little less excited, a little less smiley, and a little more timid than she used to be and it felt bad. SHE felt bad a lot of the time.

She arrived with her head down, only picking it up to offer their instructor a polite smile. Seeing Professor de Nostredame standing there with the gargoyles gave her pause, though. This was...unexpected. She felt a mixture of things in the moment and she wondered if the gargoyles held grudges, because the one that looked quite a bit like a dog didn't seem to like her so much before. They seemed calm enough now, though, and so she quietly made her way to a seat and watched them from a safe distance away. Maybe she could prove she was good with creatures today. Maybe...she could make up for before? She hoped so.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Claudine didn't really enjoy Care of Magical Creatures. For one thing, she no longer found the professor interesting, and for another, the lessons had become mostly theory. Still, she was there because despite her feelings, she cared about her education. There were faces she recognised but she ignored them all especially that Blake Ryan. De Nostredame simply got an uninterested look from her before her gaze swept over to the gargoyles.

Were they going to have another lesson on gargoyles?

Oh, the joy.

Not.

She moved purposefully from those gathered and chose a free wicker couch that would allow her to be as far away from everyone as possible.

Usually, Lucas really liked theory lessons. They were less likely to be dangerous and he could guarantee that he wouldn't be getting nervous over the tiniest parts of these lessons. Plus, he had a feeling he knew why. Or could guess why. Did the Headmistress of Beauxbatons say something? She did look pretty angry after that........ well.

But after a while? After a while, even he was starting to find the theory lessons to be boring and growing less and less excited for these lessons as time went by. They were okay but every lesson? Not even the animations had been enough to make them exciting. And Care of Magical Creatures was supposed to be exciting.

So it was a nice surprise when Nostredame mentioned that something different was happening this lesson.

It might be because of this reason that Lucas was smiling a bit more today. Or because this was still Professor Nostredame's lesson and the man was....... well. He had a face that the boy didn't mind spending the hour or two staring at. The only part that ruined it were the gargoyles that were on either side of Nostredame, acting like...... his bodyguards? Yeah, he was confused too.

For the time being, he gave Nostredame a wide smile - act cool, Dakest, act cool - as he went to find a seat on a wicker sofa. Somewhere....... somewhere. Anywhere. Sitting down, he tried his hardest not to look like he was staring but as if he was just..... ready for the lesson. Yeah. That's what it was.

Ugh, great. The gargoyles WERE here. Stupid... stupid ugly things! Didn't they have any other creatures in France! Bernie would have been happy to meet even BOWTRUCKLEs for heaven's sake!

Bernie practically stomped to a seat near Claudine but away from the others. Her wand was firmly in her bag and she was going to sit here, near her friend, making no noise and pretending to not exist.

Elisa was in her own thoughts as she returned to another lesson of Magical Creatures. Sure, it was disappointing to learn in the first set of lessons that interacting with live creatures wouldn't be occurring. The challenge in learning a new set of species was intriguing, after all. But as of now? Elisa didn't pay any more mind. It was her final year of schooling, in a different school setting and rules, but her final one.

Smiling politely at the Professor and the gargoyles, she wasted no time in taking a seat. Now came the waiting part on the lesson to begin.

Ewan wasn’t a massive fan of care of magical creatures and the series of lessons this year had been nothing short of a joke. He didn’t necessarily blame Professor De Nostredame Buuuut…did everything have to be so boring? Obviously, he must have thought exactly the same thing to because today’s lesson was actually outside! Taking a seat in one of the wicker couches, he waited patiently for the lesson to start, his eyes on the familiar visage of the gargoyles that sat either side of him.

Surely, they weren’t going to be cleaning them? Hadn’t they done enough of that already? With his eyes firmly locked on the Professors now, he tried his best to make the professor understand that this was not going to sit well with him, his facial expression that of somebody who just stepped in something nasty.

Avalon had been looking forward to today's lesson for the past week. This term, Care of Magical Creatures had been nothing short of boring. She missed when Professor Cornish was their teacher. He always made sure that the class was very hands-on. She couldn't really blame Professor de Nostredame after what happened earlier, but she wished that the staff trusted them a little bit more.

It was certainly interesting that the gargoyles were there again. That could definitely end badly. Not wanting to make too much noise, she gave the professor a polite nod before taking a seat at an empty spot on a bench.

Rhibear ~ Madam Solo ~ Dark Brooding Girl ~ Accio Jedi ~ Gryffinclaw ~ Just a doll

Tina had never been a huge fan of Care of Magical Creatures, not even at Hogwarts, not even when she was an actual student here at Beauxbatons, but since the rose garden incident, it shot right to the top of her list of least favorite subjects. She almost dropped the subject after that day, but she'd already dropped Charms and Defense Against the Dark Arts last year. she couldn't afford to lose another possible NEWT if she wanted to get into a good university.

So she was here at the appointed time, dressed in her uniform and ready to learn... at least as much as it was possible to learn in the current lesson climate. She didn't mind the theoretical lesson much- In some ways, she preferred them; they took away the element of unpredictability in interacting with a living creature - but she found the janitorial lessons downright insulting. They weren't house elves! If the creature habitats needed cleaning, that was the job of de Nostredame and/or the groundskeeper, not theirs! No need to guess whose idea that was...

As Tina approached, her dark eyes fell to the gargoyles flanking de Nostredame, and she immediately noticed the moss. Was it too much to hope that they wouldn't have to clean the moss off the gargoyles? That would be the worst of both worlds... janitorial duty and unpredictable creature interaction. Only time would tell, she supposed. For now, she greeted the professor with a polite nod of acknowledgement and a whispered, "Bonne après-midi, Professor."

De Nostredame didn't say not to speak at all, just not to speak in raised voices... which she didn't. But just in case, she made no further effort to converse in French so as not to agitate the gargoyles. With the pleasantries out of the way. she took her seat on the least crowded wicker couch and waited for the lesson to begin.

Care of Magical Creatures was supposed to be FUN, and even if the Most Interesting Man in the World was teaching the class, it was hard to enjoy it class after class after class. Phoebe still enjoyed coming to class, even to just stare at the professor, but she was ready for an adventure.

LIKE THIS. THE CUTIE PIE GARGOYLES. "Oh, HELLO, sir! Hello! And hello to your babies," Phoebe managed to keep her voice to a general whisper!shout, since they'd been told not to raise their voices and she was getting SO good at following directions. "Can I give their bellies a skritchy scratch?"

He could only imagine how disillusioning this term could be for the first years among the Hogwarts students. Mathys had hardly given such notions any thought at the beginning of term, he had standards that he had intended to keep regardless of which school he was instructing, but as the term progress he found himself having some regrets for previous decisions. Nothing he would voice to a living soul, however.

Returning the boy's nod of the head, the professor rested one of his hands atop the head of the gargoyle closest to his side and stroked it behind the ears while the boy took his seat.

A sentiment that your professor shared, rest assured. Though his hands were tied presently and he had had to go to great lengths to procure this opportunity again.

Wary of this particular Hogwarts youth, Mathys offered a polite nod of the head to the young man as he found somewhere to sit.

This dear little mademoiselle.

The professor returned her smile with one of his own as the attention his fingers were giving the gargoyle behind the ears accumulated into a frightful and low rumbling from its chest. "She is only purring, Mademosielle Summers," he assured her.

Here was one student that was not aiding in Hogwarts' image, that much was certain.

The softness in his expression that had been earned by Mademoiselle Summers quickly faded into his usual stoic indifference. It was a mutual agreement between himself and Mademosielle Blaze, nothing more.

Though she would not perform well in today's lesson if she insisted on being solo.

Mathys could always count on Monsieur Dakest to arrive with a smile of some variety. It was something the man appreciated immensely, particularly given the bleakness of the curriculum he had been pigeon toed into teaching. He had intended for all lessons this month to revolve around the courting rituals of the Peteu, but alas.

Smiling, perhaps even a borderline side smirk, at the fourth year, Mathys' soon found his hand being licked by another of the gargoyles. "Encore un peu de patience, mon ami."

Ah, oui. The ever spirited Mademoiselle Grantham. Mathys was intending to keep particular watch over this mademoiselle today and would likely be separating her from Mademoiselle Blaze when it came to activity time. They fueled each other in unhealthy ways when it came to just about anything, as he had observed.

Shushing one of the gargoyles with a firm hiss through his clenched jaw, the one whom had suffered from the sparks of Mademoiselle Grantham's wand, he offered the girl a polite nod as he had the others.

At least this mademoiselle offered no scowl or looks of disgust as she entered, which earned her a slightly more casual nod of the head and accompanying tight smile from the man as he watched her find her seat.

He did catch the dissatisfied look from Monsieur Jones, but it had little impact on the man. He could only assume that it was a look in relation to the presence of the gargoyles, one that mustered up unpleasant memories for the Hogwarts students. This was their opportunity to remedy such sentiments and get a unique experience.

He simply nodded his head in acknowledgement to the young man, though the manner in which he had wrinkled his nose begged for some sort of casual commentary. "Step een something unsavory, Monsieur Jones?" he inquired with his brows raised expectantly.

The nods was easily returned, now that he had poked a little fun at one of the Hogwarts students at their own expense, and upon doing so checked the time on his watch. Tapping it thrice with his index finger, he looked back to the assembled crowd.

Just a few more minutes.

With the pleasantries out of the way. she took her seat on the least crowded wicker couch and waited for the lesson to begin.
Mademoiselle Dantes was a student that puzzled Mathys time and time again, though not in a negative context. Though one could not argue that it was within a positive context either. She simply struck him as a troubled and lost mademoiselle who simply could not find her footing despite her honest efforts. Or, perhaps, it was a reluctance on her part to accept any footing.

Something that, unfortunately, the French man was not privy too.

"Bonne après-midi, Mademoiselle Dantes," he greeted in return as the gargoyle whose ear he had been tending to decided to curl up on the ground by his feet and roll a bit on its back, all four legs and sharp tail wiggling a bit in the air.

Miss James. Another peculiar mademoiselle.

Smiling a bit at her enthusiasm, finally a student who was showing the interest that the subject and the creatures deserved, he gently held his hand up in silent dismissal of her inquiry. At least for now.

"In due time, Mademoiselle James," he somewhat chuckled. Though the gargoyle at his feet was prime for such affections now and nearly whimpered in protest upon hearing its master speak. "For now, simply find a seat. S'il vous plaît."

Kneeling for just a moment to indulge the gargoyle presenting its belly (the whimpering and whining would have been insufferable otherwise), Mathys rose and rested one arm behind his back to bow politely from the waist as usual when he began lessons.

Bernadette HEARD that gargoyle growling, that SAME ONE who had bitten down on her wand. She was willing to bet it was the ugliest, most LOYAL dumb dog-pet-bird-thing to the Headmistress here. She would put A WHOLE COOKIE on that bet; nay, A DOZEN COOKIES.

Stupid Ogden or whatever his name was. Anyway, what--- uh, hmm. What ILLNESSES could creatures get? She could think of several, but was busy side-eying the gargoyle still, and wondering if he wanted to know illnesses that were specifically related to them...?

Default hopes its okay to say Cole sits with Avalon, Elisa and Lucas?
Swedishfish Girl! Madame Librarian! Jess's Soul Sister! Sweetest Swede!

Cole kept his eyes on the gargoyles wary of what might happen if he didn't. More and more peers entered and when the lesson started he had been joined on his wicker couch by Avalon, Elisa and Lucas. Why did they have another lesson on gargoyles of all creatures? Why not a winged horse or even a salamander? Cole supposed it was no use dwelling so instead he focused on the first question. He considered what illnesses he knew about and raised his hand to say. "Um i've heard of scale rot professor, it is a disease that afffects dragons, salamanders and other reptiles. It makes the scales fall off and become flakey. Pretty gruesome."

Default we'll say we're sitting with Phoebe! (and whoever else wants to be on that bench)
elephant-astic•wanderlust•stay in the ninedaaays the original Taco Belle•look at the flowers✿

Phoebe was really brave wanting to play with the gargoyles after everything. Truth was, Cecelia really WANTED them to like her, but wasn't sure it was possible just yet. If they WERE as much like dogs as they seemed, they'd probably forgive her after she showed them some love. PROBABLY. In an effort to test this theory, she offered one of the creatures a tentative smile and a wave. Hai. Hello. Phoebe got a wave, too, because hi friend.

So some illnesses could hurt people AND creatures, right? Cecelia knew as much and so she raised her hand, actively ignoring what Bernie had said about mouths because that's why she'd gotten in trouble last time, trying to help the gargoyle who'd gotten sparks in its mouth. Poor thing. "Conjunctivitis can hurt people and creatures, Professor. It makes it hard to see and you need a potion to cure it, pretty sure." SHE'D never had it, luckily, JUST in case anyone was wondering.

Default Definitely NOT with Claudine and Bernadette :P
#heartsforhealthcare | Disney princess

Blake was at a bench by himself by the time class had started ... He really didn't have any friends did he? The best he had to offer was Claudine the snotty Syltherin and Bernadette the inappropriate Gryffindor, and he refused to sit with them again. Transfiguration had been enough. After Bernadette's drawing Blake could not risk further speculation about any romantic interest with either of them. Though they were both pretty .. nope never mind.

Blake actually shook his head to get his thoughts back on straight and thought about the Professor's question. "Non-magical creatures can still get colds and stomach bugs ... so maybe Magical creatures can to?" Right?? Maybe???

Default Bernie & Claudine sitting together ^_^
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Certainly Bernie was the only person at Hogwarts who managed to make Claudine show a hint of a smile. It was no different now even as she watched the other girl stomp her way over to sit beside her. “Hi, you,’’ Claudine whispered and greeting then fell into silence. Her gaze flicked to the gargoyles which were the source of Bernie’s bad mood. The Snakette was very bad when it came to comforting or cheering up anyone so she would sit and be there for her friend.

The first year eyed the whining gargoyle. Did it just want attention?

Her hand went up after a moment of her racking her brain for an answer. “Squabbs Syndrome affects dragons. They’re not able to make any fire.’’

That smile, that almost-smirk that he had received was enough to make the fourth year turn slightly red. Why? He didn’t know. All he knew was that the man had a very nice smile that he didn’t mind looking at, if he was being completely honest. He hardly even took note of the French that he was speaking - it wasn’t for him, right? - as he smiled.

At least he was being cool about it, right?

Right. Lesson. This was a lesson. And it was about diseases, apparently, something that made him furrow his eyebrows as he glanced over at the gargoyles. Was this the reason behind their look today? Were they going to have to cure them? Because Lucas still remembered what happened at the Rose Garden and how terrifying these creatures seemed when they - or Desmarais- felt attacked.

As for the question, he frowned a little in thought before raising his hand in the air. It...... wasn’t the answer he was hoping for but he had something which was good enough, right? "Well, there’s Foot and Mouth disease. It effects non-magical creatures with cloven hooves like cattle and sheep and, uh..... pigs, I guess? It’s supposed to cause a fever and blisters in the mouth and on the feet. Some even die!"

What was the point to this? "I guess," he started, slowly, "The same could also happen for magical creatures with...... similar hooves?" Shut up, Dakest.

Phoebe leaned against her Cece friend and looked absolutely forlorn over not being able to skritchy scratch the gargoyles right now. See that one there? He obviously needed his belly rubbed VERY MUCH, sir, and not letting her do it was called neglect. NEGLECT.

"Um, our crup likes to eat things that aren't good for doggy bellies and then barf everywhere. So maybe allergies and upset tummies? And barfing." Very important, because the barfing was how doggies got rid of the things that weren't good for their bellies.

Default gonna say she's sitting with Ewan, hope that's okay! ^_^
Rhibear ~ Madam Solo ~ Dark Brooding Girl ~ Accio Jedi ~ Gryffinclaw ~ Just a doll

Tina hadn’t paid much attention to who was sitting on the same couch with her. She’d just chosen the couch with the fewest people, but now that she looked, she saw she was joined by one of her younger housemates (Ewan). She gave him a polite nod of acknowledgement, then turned her attention to Professor de Nostredame as he began the lesson.. Blink, blink. The question caught her off guard slightly. Illnesses that infect creatures? Was he beginning the lesson on that note because the moss covering the gargoyles was making them sick? Somebody please tell her that wasn’t the case! Handling creatures always came with some degree of uncertainty, but sick creatures were even more unpredictable!

She considered the question. The first thing that came to mind was conjunctivitis in dragons, but one of the Gryffindor firsties (Cece) already mentioned that… well, sort of. She hadn’t said anything about dragons specifically. Then Tina’s thoughts turned to chizpurfles on crups and kneazles, but did parasite infestations technically count as an illness? The dark-haired Ravenclaw remained lost in thought until something occurred to her. All this thought of crups and kneazles reminded her of her own cat, Nemesis, and from there to her “dad”’s elderly Persian cat. Poor thing could hardly get up the stairs anymore because of her arthritis!

Hold on, if non-magical cats and dogs got arthritis, did that mean kneazles and crups could too? It stood to reason that they might, since their body structures were similar enough that the species could be interbred, but maybe their magical nature gave them immunity. Tina didn’t feel confident enough about any of the answers she came up with to voice them out loud - she didn’t want to chance losing house points if they turned out to be way off the mark! - so she stayed silent for now, listening intently to her classmates’ answers.

Several things popped into Ewan’s mind as the Professor asked him if he’d stepped in something. What he really wanted to say was this stupid, pathetic excuse of a school but somehow, he had a feeling this wouldn’t go down well. Taking a second to compose his face to a cordial smile, he just replied simply “No Professor, not at all. I’m just curious what we’re going to be doing”.

Luckily, he didn’t have to wait too long to find out. Unluckily for him, a knowledge of animal illnesses was not something he was an expert about. Turning to the person next to him (Tina), he couldn’t help but give her a small shrug and smile “I’m honestly not sure. I guess it would depend on the creature? I mean, gargoyles surely wouldn’t get the same illnesses as regular creatures?” his mind comparing the needs of both animals now. Obviously normal such as crups and kneazles required a healthy diet which if it didn’t get, could make it ill. Holding his hand up now, not wanting to draw any more negative attention to himself, he waited until the professor called on him “I guess animals could become ill depending on the sustenance they receive? I mean feeding animals something that doesn’t agree with them could make them ill?”. Was he confident with his answer? No but it was better than no answer.

Carsyn literally felt relieved about today's lesson. After what felt like months of theory presented indoors which was only half appreciated on cold days, they were finally going outdoors again which meant the prospect of studying a real creature was great. Except maybe not since the only creatures present were gargoyles? Who looked sick?

Once Nostredame spoke to greet them, Carsyn's eyes were fully on him as from the months of having him teach, she'd learned if she didn't pay strict attention she would definitely be missing something due to the thick accent.

"Weather can definitely play an important role in well-being. There's a reason the phrase, under the weather, caught on." Carsyn said, after raising her hand. It wasn't specific to an illness, per say.

Holly had so many opinions on Beauxbatons that she had almost filled a full diary with her complaints and thoughts. Some of her musings had helped her to understand things that were happening, such as that weird lesson with Professor Barlow in the Dining Hall because of the room being double booked - others, simply couldn’t be worked out, no matter how many pages she wrote or how many times she tried and tried and tried to find the truth (like why the French students hated them all so much or why everything seemed to be falling down around them again).

However, seeing the Gargoyles next to the Professor as she moved closer, made her pause. She had complained and moaned about the over-use of theory only lessons for Creatures only two nights ago. Hmm… Maybe someone was actually listening to her … Nah. She was only writing it down, she hadn’t actually bored anyone to tears with her complaints. Not even Alis or Jorgie. And definitely not Avery. They always had better things to do and talk about when they were together. Cute boyfriend was the cutest. Mmmmhhhmmmm.

With a wide smile and a wiggle of her fingers in the Professor’s direction, the Slytherin slipped onto a bench with Lucas and gave him a whispered “Hi, Lucas!” before she gave the others that were sitting with him a smaller, but still sincere, smile.

… So…. Gargoyles???

Leaning back in the wicker chair, sandwiched between Lucas and Elisa, Holly watched the Professor and the Gargoyle. No one should be allowed to be that pretty. She bowed her own head slightly in return, probably looking ridiculous but she didn’t care. It was polite… right? That, or it didn’t make a difference either way. Oh well. It was done now.

Listening to the others that gave their answers, she bit her lip. Holly wasn’t the most up to date with Creatures, even with all of the time they had spent on theory this year. She loved arithmancy and runes too much. Whoops. However, that didn’t stop her from putting her hand in the air to offer an opinion. Even if it was wrong, who cared it would be a conversation point. “Sir… I think that small insects an often pass flu’s and virus’ across to different creatures. Some of them are really really fatal… I think there is one that attacks birds specifically? …. Or was it horses… Maybe both?” She didn’t know, she had an idea that was floating around in her head but it seemed too much like mist; noncorporeal and just out of her reach to form into a proper description for the Professor. Whoops. Sorry.

That was a bold answer, but Mathys had come to expect such intrepid gestures from the younger students of Hogwarts. Had she left her answer there, the man was obligated to throw his own flavour of pettiness into his response. Though, unfortunately, she continued and that tight fist pressed to the small of his back relaxed. He considered what illnesses he knew about and raised his hand to say. "Um i've heard of scale rot professor, it is a disease that afffects dragons, salamanders and other reptiles. It makes the scales fall off and become flakey. Pretty gruesome."
Mathys nodded in approval at the young man's answer. "Scale rot can be quite painful for magical reptiles, oui." He was considerably more impressed already with the answers that Hogwarts students were offering this lesson, two ticks in the right direction already.

This felt a bit more promising.

He nodded once again as Mademoiselle Summers spoke, his features a bit grave as a lack of sight in some creatures was as good as a death sentence. Though that was not the case for his gargoyles, so there was no need to dwell too much on the subject.

"A condition zat can become very severe," he nodded sagely.

Maybe???
Not the most insightful of responses, but Mathys could accept it. "Indeed zey can," he nodded in agreement.

"Oui," he nodded while giving the gargoyle at his feet a bit of a look. Had been a nasty bout with this one not too long ago. "Not just ze dragons, but othair fire breathing reptilian as well."

Mathys once again found himself offering this particular young man a half smile. "Oui, zis can be a very serious ailment for ze cows, pigs, sheep, goats, deer, and other animals with divided hooves," he gestured towards the gargoyles knowingly.

The tension in his shoulders had relaxed considerably as the Hogwarts students continued to redeem themselves.

"Um, our crup likes to eat things that aren't good for doggy bellies and then barf everywhere. So maybe allergies and upset tummies? And barfing." Very important, because the barfing was how doggies got rid of the things that weren't good for their bellies.
Mademoiselle James certainly had a way with words, didn't she? "Food poisoning," he chuckled lightly as he concisely placed the first year's thoughts into a neat little package. "Zankfully we should not be faced weeth such scenes today."

His eyes fell on Mademoiselle Dantes and her silence. He allowed himself to pause here in case she decided to raise her hand and offer up any thoughts that were clearly gracing her mind in this moment. Though, when none came, he nodded his head in acknowledgement of her attentiveness and moved on to the next student.

OOC: we are assuming that first speech was whispered and not for Mathys to hear

His brows dipped in slight disappointment at the repeated sentiment, though he was not wrong in his response. "Oui, food poisoning. As Mademoiselle James too mentioned."

It wasn't specific to an illness, per say.
.......hark. Another dip in the pool of disappointment.

But before he became too critical, perhaps he could offer her the opportunity to elaborate on this old maritime saying.

"Can you offair an example, Mademosielle Rose?" he inquired skeptically. "Wethair itself iz a rathair broad statement." One that would earn her no marks in a exam setting.

Whoops. Sorry.
Mathys found himself nodding once again, though the list of ailments that fell under this umbrella category were far too vast to go into detail at the moment. "An astute mention, Mademoiselle Tamesis. Zere are many diseases transmitted by eensects and teecks and zey can infect both mundane and magical creatures alike. Zough, zankfully, zee hide of zee gargoyle is so thick and tough when zey are in stone sleep zat zey have a very low risk of receiving any of zese."

He was aware that he had not asked for gargoyle specific ailments, and he did not think that the Hogwarts students were familiar enough with the creatures to make guesses. And he did grow rather weary of telling them that their answers were incorrect.

Most of the gargoyles had taken it upon themselves to lay down in the grass as the lesson progressed while various noises of discontent filled the air between silences from human speech. A purr over here, the rattle of a tail over there, a quiet bleat, the occasional crunch of grass as one or two decided they needed a bit of a snack. All this was music to the man's ears and a good indication of his gargoyles' temperament for the remainder of the lesson.

"Gargoyles, as you have hopefully observed, are a unique species of creature. Like ze chimera and ze mateecore, gargoyles' bodies ahre a hybreed of two or more species and ziss ees not always conseestent from one gargoyle to anothair. As you can see among zose who have volunteered to attend our lesson, we have some zat have reptilian parts while others lack zese entirely and have strong caprine qualeeties. Ziss can make zeir care extremely deeffeecult as zey are susceptible to numerous ailments. To counteract ziss, gargoyles' stone sleep, wheech ees usually triggered by zeir biological clocks, became a vital evolutionary advantage. I am sure you can sink of numerous advantages for phase shifting, zough not without eets risks as well." He paused a moment to carefully maneuver himself around the gargoyles that had strung themselves out on the grass. "In ze wild, cleanliness ees a survival skill. Even ze cahckroach must keep eets feelers clean to find food. One disadvantage zat gargoyles face with zeir phase shifting ees zat zey struggle to shed old coats, or scales, or skin. Some of you may have seen what Non–magiques considair to be a gargoyle, where zey awake by bursting out of a stone casing...but ziss ees something of pure imagination and not how sings actually work. Gargoyles not only will phase shift eento zeir stone sleep for rest, but also to protect against ze weathair and zey are not invincible against erosion or lichen growth...which ees what you see on our gargoyles here. Among...other zings. Today, you will all be learning how to give a gargoyle a bath and tend to eets specific needs for cleanliness. But before we begin, we need to start on some protective measures. no spell work ziss time."

They all saw how well that had turned out the last go around and Mathys did not fancy a repeat offense.

"Over zair on ze racks tucked behind zat tree you will find an assortment of modified fencing gear zat you can slip on over your Hogwarts uniforms. I suggest you remove your bulky billowy black robes. Zese have been mmodified by myself to act een ze same mannair een wheech Loricatus was meant to ze last time ziss task was attempted. Now...off you go. Be sure to make no sudden movements and remembair to keep your voices to a pleasant calm. Once you have changed, reassemble weeth your couchmates and we will begin caring for our gargoyles."

And if there were any questions, now would be the time to ask them.
