Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes

Here is where the Department of Magical Accidents and Catastophes work on their tasks and missions outside of the department. If you need to adventure into the Muggle world to take care of your tasks at hand, then this is the place to come. Make sure that each department is working together and keeping a close eye out for each other, you never know what is out there waiting.

Jamie-Lee popped out a nearby pub's fireplace. She quickly left without forgetting to modify any of the muggles memory who had saw her pop out of a fireplace... as if! She quickly headed to the scene of the attack and hoped her team would get here as soon as. The muggle appeared to be floating, "Poor dear."

Ivan popped out from around the corner of the house where he'd been scouting out the territory, oblivious to the strange looks passing muggles gave him. "Ahoy, Jamie," Ivan waved and hurried over to her. He looked up at Mr. George Smith, who was approximately 20 feet off the ground. "Poor fellow," Ivan murmured before turning his attention to Jamie.

"The others should be along soon with their outfits." Ivan himself had gotten fitted with a full muggle doctor's dress from the costumer - charcoal grey suit with skinny black tie, black bowler hat, long white coat, black leather gloves befitting a proper gentleman of his station.

Ivan hadn't been sure what do with strangely-shaped rubber tube - something called a "seth-o-scopic." So he'd shoved it into the shiny black leather doctor's bag pictured in the muggle encyclopedia Ivan had referenced. The bag was filled with the essentials of a practicing muggle healer: bottled leeches, blood-letting bowl, small saw, caster oil (really a powerful sleeping draught to knock Mr. Smith out), and assorted bandages.

"Oh, and I was told to give you this," Ivan handed Jamie a business card. He had one for himself to indicate he was a muggle doctor from a muggle health agency.

Madeline Apparated alongside a building and quickly looked around. She was in an alleyway, probably not the best place to Apparate, as a dark wizard could easily ambush her, but no one was in sight. She hurried around the corner and towards the crime scene. She took one look at Mr. Smith and shook her head. "What person would do this to an innocent muggle?" she asked herself quietly.

Noticing that Jamie-Lee and Ivan were already on the job, Madeline began her assignment and began searching for any muggle who looked in shock or baffled or acting strangely in any way.

Behind a nearby rubbish bin, she spotted a little girl, probably 9 or 10 by the look of her, huddled in the darkness behind the bin, her legs drawn up to her chest and staring in horror at the levitating Mr. Smith. Probably best to start with this one first, Madeline thought. She inched forward and the girl shrank back into the shadows more. "It's alright, don't be afraid," Madeline said. "Are you hurt? We have a doctor here," she said, glancing at Ivan. The girl still didn't budge.

Madeline looked around to see if any of the others had shown up, but it was still just the three of them. She was going to need help coaxing this young girl out of her hiding place so she could properly modify her memory.

"Right," said Jamie-Lee accepting the business card, "You really have thought of everything. Good work." She nodded towards Mr Smitch who was still floating, "Get him down and sort his memory and i'll go help the others," she smiled at him and headed off.

She spotted an elderly woman nearby looking terrified. "Hello ma'am. I am Doctor Crawford," she showed the woman the card, "If you could just sit down for me a moment while I make sure you are okay." The woman obeyed and closed her eyes, Jamie-Lee removed her wand, "Obliviate." Jamie-Lee modified the womans memory to make her think she had a bad case of the flu and was suffering hallucinations. "Hope you feel better soon ma'am," She moved onto the next witness

Ivan nodded and turned to the floating Mr. Smith. He was middle-aged man of average height and build, with thinning hair done in the catastrophic comb-over which balding men everywhere always attempt and seldom were able to pull off. Ivan clucked sympathetically and moved to work.

Getting the man down proved to the be the easy part. A simple "Priori Incantatem" and the man fell to the earth with a thud. Keeping Mr. Smith from running away screaming turned out to be rather difficult. Although the sprained ankle did slow him down some. "Immobulus!" Ivan shouted and Mr. Smith was frozen in the act of trying to climb over his neighbor's white picket fence. And then, of course, a silencing spell was required because of all the screaming.

"Now this will never do," Ivan muttered to himself, examining the man's position. "Wingardium Leviosa." Ivan floated the man back towards his house. Getting him through the door took a few tries, but after about ten minutes of banging him off ceiling and walls Ivan had the man hovering above his bed. He reversed the spell and the man fell onto the mattress.

"Now, we're not here to hurt you," Ivan tried to explain to the cowering Mr. Smith, drawing out his wand and waving it about in a friendly way. "In fact, we're going to give you a little holiday. Obliviate!"

A few minutes later and Ivan had supplied Mr. Smith the impression of having been victim of grave illness, which included a rather high fever. He was instructed to take two swallows of the castor oil and remain in bed for a few days.

Afterwards, if Mr. Smith had cause to question why a 19th century doctor had made him a house call and plied him with out-of-date remedies, he would eventually put it all down to a fever-skewed memory due to his his bout of influenza.

Standing outside Mr. Smith's door, Ivan pulled his leather gloves back on, topped off his head with his bowler hat and went to find his leader and report a successful mission.

Madeline stuck her hand in her pocket and felt something. There was a piece of candy that she had left over from a visit to her niece, and a sudden idea struck Madeline.

"Do you want a piece of candy?" she asked the young girl. "It's from the doctor. It's yours if you come out and let us make sure you aren't hurt."

The young girl looked timid and afraid, but slowly crawled out, giving Madeline a better view of her. Madeline led the girl to a bench and handed her the candy, which she stuck in her own pocket for later. Madeline then quickly reached for her wand and pointed, muttering "Oblivate" before the girl could get away. Her eyes slid out of focus, and Madeline planted a memory of the girl falling asleep on the bench by accident. She stood up and headed down the street towards the area where Ivan had just been, ready to look for more victims.

"I need to head back to the office," Jamie-Lee told Ivan, "You stay here with the others and get everyone. Once your done I will meet you back at the Ministry, all right?"

Jamie-Lee moved behind a big, run down building before apparating back to the ministry.

"Yes, Ma'am," Ivan replied to Jamie. He watched her walk away and then turned his attention to the street. Where were the others? Ivan shoved a hand into his coat pocket and meandered up the street. He nodded and smiled pleasantly at the passing muggles with dubious expressions on their faces.

"Alright, sounds good," Madeline replied with a smile. She headed down the street the opposite way that Ivan was going and started looking for more confused Muggles.

Lindsay popped out from behind a little shed. She had made a quick trip home to check up on Emma and Keith. They were all fine, but you never knew with those two children. Looking around, she noticed that a little blonde boy was hiding inside a cardboard box, looking terrified.

"Come here, dear," Lindsay said to the boy, who was slowly coming out of the box. "It's okay. ... I won't hurt you. I have something for you to eat."

As Lindsay said 'eat', the blonde boy came out of the box and walked over to her. Lindsay lead him to a bench, which was nearby an alley, and the boy said that his name was Nick, after Lindsay had asked him what his name was. Nick sat on the bench and held out his hands. "Just a moment, dear. Stay right there. I'll be back shortly."

Lindsay walked into the alley. It was deserted. Lindsay took out her wand and muttered a spell under her breath. A bowl of chocolate ice cream appeared in front of her, floating in mid-air. She quickly put her wand back in her robe pocket and grabbed the bowl of ice cream. She walked back to Nick, who was still sitting on the bench with his hands still held out.

"I hope you like chocolate ice cream, dear," Lindsay said, handing Nick the bowl of chocolate ice cream. "Eat up. It looks to me your hungry for something sweet on this hot day."

Nick nodded, muttered a thank you to Lindsay and wolfed down the ice cream. After Nick had finished, Lindsay said, "Now. Can you do one thing for me?" Lindsay asked, as Nick nodded his head. "I need you to close your eyes. ... Just for a few moments."

Nick did so. Lindsay looked around and saw that no one was looking at her. She quickly took out her wand and whispered, "Oblivate."

She had made Nick fall asleep on the bench. She gave him the memory that he had fallen asleep and dreamed of himself eating ice cream all day long. Lindsay smiled, put a Vanishing Spell on the bowl and sang a little song, that she sang to her two children, to Nick. "Sweet dreams, dear," Lindsay said, after finishing her little song.

Madeline smiled as she looked at Lindsay doing her work. Poor children, they were in the middle of quite a lot today.

Suddenly, a middle aged man ran past her, yelling "He's flying, I tell you! He's flying!" A few passing muggles were giving him strange looks, and another muttered, "Poor devil must have taken too many pain-killers."

"Excuse me, sir," Madeline said, catching up to the man. "You say there is a man down there flying?" she asked.

He nodded quickly. "He really is, I swear!"

"Please, come with me, I'd like to ask a few questions about this 'flying man'" she said, leading him into a nearby alleyway.

"Finally, someone who believes me!" he exclaimed, and he followed her without another question.

As soon as they were hidden in the alleyway shadows, Madeline drew her wand and yelled, "Oblivate!"

The man's eyes slid out of focus, and Madeline created a memory that he had, indeed, taken too many pain killers for a headache he had had earlier in the day. Once the man was seated against the nearby wall, Madeline left to attend to more victims.

[i]How do doctors manage to stay cool dressed in a wool suit and coat?" Ivan doffed his bowler had and wiped the trickles of sweat from his forehead. So far he hadn't run into the other woman on the team. Maybe she went the other direction. "Oh, sorry about that Ma'am," Ivan shuffled around a woman and her two children whom he'd just run over while not looking where he was going.

He turned back and walked quickly down the street. A woman stepped out of an alley. Ah, there we have her. Ivan waved.

Madeline walked along the street, further and further away from the crime scene. None of the other muggles seemed to be confused. They were all just darting into shops, doing their everyday shopping. Madeline headed back once she reached a mile. Her legs hurt but everyone seemed to be just fine down on her end.

"Oy, Madeline!" Ivan hailed her. "You about done? I'm sweltering." Ivan pulled at his starched collar and tight necktie with a finger, trying to get some air. "I don't think there's all that many who saw and Mr. Smith is asleep."

Lindsay walked over to Ivan and Madeline. "A few others saw what all happened," Lindsay said, pointing to Nick who was sleeping on the bench. "Poor dear was frightened half to death."

Lindsay looked around. No one was going crazy or screaming about a flying person. Seeing that everything was back to normal, Lindsay smiled and said, "Looks to me like we got them all. Ready to go back to headquarters?"

Ivan nodded at Lindsay. "Right you are! These muggle doctors have a heck of a life. I'll choose robes over these clothes anyday." Ivan watched yet another child yawn and drift past their little Obliviator group. "Nice work, by the way. I think I'll take the tavern floo. Wouldn't mind a cold one before heading back. Meet you there?" It wasn't really a question so much as a good-bye speech because Ivan was already practically running toward the air conditioned pub with the frosted glasses of ale.

"All finished," Madeline replied. "I guess it's time to head back to Headquarters." she said, but before she could finish Ivan had already run off. With a small chuckle, Madeline checked to make sure the coast was clear and Apparated back to their office.

"Excellent!" Lindsay said, with a grin on her face. "Mission accomplished!"

Lindsay walked through the Muggle streat. Such silly things Muggles are, Lindsay thought to herself, peering inside the Muggle shops as she passed by them. As she passed the last shop on the street, she walked into an alley and looked around to see if anyone was watching her. No one. So, she Apparted at the spot, back to the Obliviator Headquarters.
