Yeah, poor bas...

Who's your favourite human? I just love Aragorn!
That's kinda hard to say, cuz are any of them really human??

I guess I like Aragorn the best too - although he's not really a human either.

I think actually, my favorite human would be Faramir.

:o Aragorn is human! He's one of the Dúnedain of the North - just as Faramir is a Dúnadan of the South!

The Trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkein. No explanation needed.

Someone said something about the elves being quite different in The Hobbit and LOTR. I don't really see that at all. Elves and dwarves really just don't get along at all. That's why it's so cool to see this really intimate relationship develop between Gimli and Legolas in the books. If you can, read The Simarillion. That will explain things to you.

My favorite human--in the books, anyhow--is Faramir. My least favorite human all around is Denethor. I hated him from the first moment I met him (which was in the books...)

I liked Merry best. He was fun, but he could see the whole picture, too. I guess he's the hobbit who makes me think of myself. If I were going to choose someone from LOTR to be my best friend, I'd choose Sam. He may not be the brightest character in the book, but he's absolutely the most passionate and compassionate.

I'm not sure that anyone can really recommend this to you effectively. If you haven't read the trilogy yet, you are missing out on one of the most profound and beautiful works in the English language. The only thing you need to be warned about is that The Fellowship of the Ring is a little too slow for some people at the beginning. If you get discouraged 50 pages through, keep going- it gets more active!

LORD OF THE RINGS??? man i loved the trilogy!!!!!! but i must admit that if ur not a reading fan (like me! ) you'll find the beginning of the Fellowship very boring... on the other hand itll be good for you cause than youll know alot more details that will help you later on... the return of the king is a very good one, and if you have seen the movie then youll notice that there is an important part missing in the end, but that it is very interesting to read too..
all im saying is... Go FOR IT !!!!! =)

Yeah, I was really looking forward to seeing the scouring, but...I guess that wasn't REALLY that important to the main plot...I suppose... Ah well, considering Jackson's time restraints, he did good! But definitely to those that have only seen the movies or *gasp* have had no exposure to Tolkien at all: READ IT! I have to agree that the Fellowship is kinda slow...I think it's all the songs every other page, lol...I actually didn't mind the songs all that much, but I know a lot of people who read the books and had a hard time digesting the first one due to the songs...

The songs are BORING??????? How can you understand the plotline without reading the songs? They are probably the most important device in the novel. Plus they are entertaining-JRRT is a good poet. I'm curious if anyone can point to a single song that wasn't both informative and enjoyable.

Where to begin.
Lord of the rings Is one of the best books I have ever read. I would reccomend reading the books definitely but also the Hobbit, yes even though its a children's book of thats how He wrote i to be,and The Silmarillion which is the war before Sauron was defeated the first time. All in all Fantastic Books!!!!! Just wish the Movies were longer =P

I love LOTR.

To be honest, I liked Fellowship best as far as just reading is concerned. Between the beautiful poetry and Tom Bombadil and Goldberry, it was just awesome. But ROTK was great for epic battle scenes.

And to continue being honest, it was the scouring (actually, the corrupting) which ruined ROTK for me. I just hated that. I know why Tolkien did it, but I still didn't like it.

The entire trilogy really allows the imagination to come to life with incredible, vivid images.

The scouring is great! If there is no scouring, then the ring's (sauron's) power doesn't affect the innocent, except Tolkien has told us throughout all the books that it does. There can't be no scouring and a coherent plot. It is a depression part of the book to read, though. Also, the scouring is one of the few places divine judgement appears- the shadow of Saruman looks to the west (from whence it came, since he is a maia), but is refused entry there.

^I would presume to guess that it is because most people interested in Harry Potter are interested in good books in general as well.

Unless you've read the books and watched the movies, your in no position to say you hate it. At first, Ill admit, I didnt like Lord of the Rings and I hadnt read the books or watched the movies but that was really stupid of me because now I relieze what a dumb mistake that was. Lord of the Rings is awesome. Yes its a Harry Potter Site, but mind you this is a *Non-HP Book* thread.

I read "The Hobbit" first, and for those people who pick up LOTR FOTR, omg the first pages after Biblo's birthday can get mighty boring (Sorry dudes - some spoilers) cuz you're waiting for Frodo to just LEAVE! Tolkien's language is also diverse, and he uses so much imagery that if you're not committed to following the book and half reading you really miss out - reading LOTR is like creating a new world into your head.
And to the dude who didn't like LOTR - Sorry dude. If you think big words means boring (which is the reason most people who don't like LOTR don't like it), read "A Farewell to Arms," by Ernest Hemingway, and the rest of us can totally appreciate a college professor who took soOoO much time to create every single detail to LOTR - just like Peter Jackson, the cast, and the crew gave their all to every little thing - because he loved his son. I mean, I hated HP for a while - I thought people were making a big deal outta some dweeb who was a wizard. I refused to read the books, even see the movies. But I saw a movie one day, picked up the 2nd book, and am now in love. Simple. My 2 cents.
