| | | This is ANOTHER general topic for LOTR. Talk about anything about the books or JRR Tolkien here. ALL OTHER LOTR BOOK TOPICS MADE AFTER THIS POINT WILL BE LOCKED.
In addition, I don't want to hear about the ROTK movie AND/OR spoilers from it in this thread, either. Anyone who is caught will receive a harsh warning. It is not fair for everyone else who hasn't seen the movie yet. INCLUDING ME. You have been warned. | |

| *stern* Ackapoo, did you delete my forum?
What do y'all think of Éowyn? She's my favourite character personally, but what do other people think? Yeah, I did. Because you and several other people were talking about the movie, that's why. And I also received a complaint from another member that someone was posting spoilers. SO DON'T DO IT. |

Granted, we shouldn't have gone off-topic, but it's not our fault if people come in to discuss the books (which are designed to be read to the END) and it turns out they haven't read the books at all: they've just seen the movie.
Anywho, Éowyn? |

| Definitely. He was so clingy in the films.
But in the books (when you look past all the gestures that would now be considered homosexual) he was devoted and truly cared about Frodo's needs as opposed to his own. I love the bit in ROTK where he has a bit of a Gollum moment, trying to work out how to get Frodo up to Mount Doom. |

| I love pippin  he's the greatest (in books and the films) It's sad now that all the movies are finished, they were really good tho.(I hope that didn't violate the first warning...) | When it was written, I guess homosexuality wasn't really something that was public.
I love The Hobbit (rereading it at the mo) - I forgot what a great little book it is.

I'm just wondering... do you make many mistakes, or are you a true hero when things get tough?
Anyway, I am now reading TT for the second time, but now I'm noticing all the quotes in the movie that are directly from the book, but from completely different parts. I'm just amazed how well written the script is!!! |

| I'm reading a book called JRR Tolkien: Architect of Middle Earth. It's interesting in points. But I have to say, it has really reduced my romance with the books. I used to read them and try to pretend that Tolkien really did uncover some hidden history of "England" and then write about it, but now after reading this book - it tells you where he got all his ideas from and it kinda sucks!
Anyway, LOTR is still a really good series of books. I'm glad they are enjoying so much renewed popularity because of the movies. |

| Oh hey, is anyone else bothered by the differences in personalities between elves in The Hobbit and elves in LOTR? Maybe it is just my perception but it seems like the elves in The Hobbit are just concerned with having a good time (drinking & eating) and are somewhat petty when it comes to dealing with other races (for example, putting the dwarves in prison). They don't seem to act like that at all in LOTR. |

| Yes, Legolas is the son of Thranduil, king of the Silvan Elves of Mirkwood. Thranduil's father, Oropher, was killed in the Battle of the Last Alliance.
Legolas is probably of Sindarin descent, since after the breaking of Thangorodrim, many of the Sindar and Noldor who remained in Middle-earth became lords among the more numerous Silvan. |

| Gollum is cool even though he led a very sad life. Everytime that i think of his life, i almost start to cry.He seemed "happy" before he found the ring, and then he became all spooky and evil. For ral, the ring did so much to him, he even forgot his own name! And to top it all off he lived in a cave suffering by himself with the ring with nobody to talk to, no wonder he had two personalities. |

| I love that bit in TTT where he goes over to SAm and Frodo sleeping, and that whole paragraph... Gollum looked at them. A strange expression passed over his lean hungry face. The gleam faded from his eyes, and they went dim and grey, old and tired. A spasm of pain seemed to twist him, and he turned away, peering back up towards the pas, shaking his head, as if engaged in some interior debate. Then he came back, and slowly putting out a trembling hand, very cautiously he touched Frodo's knee - but almost the touch was a caress. For a fleeting moment, could one of the sleepers have seen him, they would've thought that they beheld an old weary hobbit, shrunken by the years that had carried him far beyond his time, beyond friends and kin, and the fields and streams of youth, an old starved pitiable thing.
That always makes me cry. |

| Yeah, I always thought Gollom/Smeagol was one of the best characters in the whole series.
He's a tormented soul. |
