We know a little about Fawkes, but how do you think Dumbledore got him? How do you think their relationship was.

~I think Dumbledore had Fawkes for a long time, he was probably a gift from someone dear to him. (Is Fawkes a rare bird?) I love their reltionship, there's so much understanding between them.

yes, as a phoenix, Fawkes is rare. You don't ussually see phoenixs as domesticated pets. They obviously had a strong, bonding relationship. If Fawkes was a gift, I wonder who gave him to Albus.

Interesting question, Dumbledore knew alot of people, but who amongst them was really dear/close to him. We got to remember that alot of people didn't really know much about him. Do you think it was Gridelwald that presented Fawkes to Dumbledore?

^ That is a possibility I would think. It would have had to have been a very special relationship for someone to give up a phoenix for him. I almost see fawkes and Dumbledore as a boy and his dog. They are together through it all.

So true..that's why Fawkes left when Dumbledore died.

I really think that Fawkes was either given to Dumbledore when he was a student at Hogwarts maybe hi grandfather or someone else or he found an egg or the shriveled baby bird in its ashes and took him home, because he had a big heart. I believe Albus Dumbledore had the same love and big heart for animals that Rubeus Hagrid had but combined with wisdom (which by the way is one reason why he protected Hagrid). Now I wonder do you really think Fawkes is gone... or will he show up to help those who love Dumbledore so dearly when the need should be there?

I remember reading straight from JK I believe, that Phoenix mostly/completely bond with wizards or witches at hatching. As Phoenix breeding and eggs are very rare, and the fact that they don't bond easily with people even when they do hatch, they aren't domesticated often. I think it would take a special person to get one to bond with them, and Dumbledore is indeed that.

True, I think Dumbledore was the most special wizard, his choices always reflected that his heart was true.

Yes, I think I remember him traveling for a bit when he was younger after graduating. Perhaps he found the egg, be it on the road or in an empty nest and decided to keep it. A bond happened when Fawkes was born and there you go. Fawkes knew how important Harry was to Dumbledore and therefore he treated Harry and the gang different. either that, or Fawkes felt how special the boy was and helped them in his own way during the series.

Just a thought, maybe Dumbledore got him as a special gift for defeating Grindelwald? The wizarding public were quite happy about the Dark wizard's defeat.

I think he could have found him in one of the exotic locations he traveled to when he was a young man. He either found Fawkes or was given him as a gift from someone in that country, Tibet or wherever it is that phoenixes live.

That's possible. But was it ever mentioned in the books how he got him? I don't remember reading anything about it in the books or elsewhere. Anyone have a clue?

I think he was given to Dumbledore as a present by a friend, or maybe he found it lying there in a cold and lonely place and decided that he would take care off it.
