quill Mini Challenges

What exactly is a mini challenge?

Mini challenges are extra prompts that you may use IN PLACE of any one of the prompts in your list for the SS100 and/or SS50 challenges. These are meant to help stretch your writing skills and provide additional inspiration - don't stress about them! The most important thing is that you have fun! If you're looking for even more ways to challenge yourself outside of the SS25/50/100 and the EEFD, be sure to check out the various games in the Chocolate Frog Corner too!

» about the mini challenges
They do not expire and can be completed any time.

The first post of your thread may NOT be a mini challenge.

You may only use each mini challenge once per SS100/SS50 thread.

You may use up to five mini challenges or ten mini challenges in your SS50 or SS100 thread, respectively.

You do not in any way HAVE to use any of the mini challenges in your thread(s). They are only there to offer you an additional resource for you to use from time to time with your writing.

You do NOT need to post anywhere that you have replaced a prompt. Simply strikeout the prompt from your list and write beside it the title of the mini challenge that you have selected.

Default mini challenge twenty-four - Dementors
astronomizzle ♧ gryffinDORK | & the rest is drag ♣ #badluckDerf

mini challenge twenty-four
"Get too near a Dementor and every good feeling, every happy memory will be sucked out of you. If it can, the Dementor will feed on you long enough to reduce you to something like itself — soul-less and evil. You’ll be left with nothing but the worst experiences of your life."
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Feeling the heat? Why not cool your writing down with these ice bearing, soul sucking creatures? Whether they are a main component, mentioned in passing, or used as a metaphor, the choice is yours but just be sure dementors are included somewhere in your entry when submitting for this mini challenge.

Oh, and make sure you have your wand at the ready. Hate to have one of them give you a kissy kissy before you finish writing

Default mini challenge twenty-five - luck of the Irish
astronomizzle ♧ gryffinDORK | & the rest is drag ♣ #badluckDerf

mini challenge twenty-five
"The word luck is Middle Dutch in origin, coming from luc, a shortening of gheluc, 'happiness, good fortune.' "

When one thinks of March, thoughts about St. Patrick's Day, leprechauns, pots of gold, shamrocks, and rainbows come to mind. Finding any of these things would make you one lucky person, yeah? The phrase luck of the Irish is commonly thought to mean “extreme good fortune.” However, according to Edward T. O’Donnell, an Associate Professor of History at Holy Cross College and author of 1001 Things Everyone Should Know About Irish American History, the term has not an Irish origin but “a happier, if not altogether positive,” American one.
"During the gold and silver rush years in the second half of the 19th century, a number of the most famous and successful miners were of Irish and Irish American birth. . . .Over time this association of the Irish with mining fortunes led to the expression 'luck of the Irish.'"

So why not make one of your drabbles especially lucky - or unlucky or the case may be? Whether your character has stumbled upon a four leaf clover, draw from the Unlucky Dip in Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes, or snuggling with their lucky teddy bear, make sure your drabble includes a little bit of luck!

Default mini challenge twenty-six - first person witness
astronomizzle ♧ gryffinDORK | & the rest is drag ♣ #badluckDerf

mini challenge twenty-six

The story of the main character is told by another character observing the events.

This form of narrative voice is told by an "I," but this "I" is not the main character of the story but a a less important character witnessing events and telling them to the reader. Are your drabbles/ficlets about Harry Potter? Try writing a drabble from Ron Weasley's perspective or even Colin Creevey!

Default mini challenge twenty-seven - healer

mini challenge twenty-seven

Harry Potter: "Are they doctors?"

Ron Weasley: "Doctors? Those Muggle
nutters who cut people up? Nah, they're
Healers."

An apple a day keeps the Healer away, or so they say. In honor of the 2014 Days of Potter, we are asking you to tuck the apples away and invite the Healer to step into your drabbles an ficlets! Whether the primary focus or in passing, make sure the Healer stops by to give your writing a bit of a check-up!

Abracadabra! Sim Sala Bim!

In a magical world like the one our challenges take place in, Muggle magic might appear very strange and out of place.
All the more reason for you to incorporate it in your SS50 or SS100 threads.
Simple card tricks, someone pulling a rabbit out of a hat - your choice!

But remember, no real magic allowed!

Merriam Webster defines laundry as:
"clothes or linens that have been or are to be laundered"

Others might describe it as "an annoying nuisance"

Your challenge will be to come to my house and do my laundry have someone in your drabble or ficlet do laundry.
Might be theirs, might be someone else's. They might be good at it or it might be their first time.

Or it might be their hundredth time and they're still not good at it.

Default mini challenge thirty-one - bad pickup lines
The Kisapaths | Sila!Roti | -2 | TouchableHair | ToiletPaperGuy | QueenOfConfusion

mini challenge thirty-one

"Are you a Snitch?
Because you’re by far the greatest catch here."

Surely, most of us have experienced bad pick-up lines one way or the other. Some might have even used one themselves.
Your challenge this month is to incorporate someone using a bad (are there even good ones?) pick up line in your drabble/ficlet.

The reaction they get is completely up to you.
