Doyle Branxton Department of Mysteries | What is SnitchSeeker.com? This thread was inspired by a project some of our members undertook in order to get SnitchSeeker onto Wikipedia. Unfortunately, we were unable to post the articles to Wikipedia but, we wanted to archive them here in the library as an introduction to the site for our guests and new members.
Also, a big thank you to katiebell is in order, as she went through each and every one of these articles to ensure that they were worthy of a site such as this one.
What makes SnitchSeeker notable?
* Winner of Seeker Awards for Most Interactive, Best Linkage, and Best Online Community.
* First to use the FanLib (click on 'Showcase') software in a competition called 'The Potter Project', a collaborative fan fiction contest (you can view the press release here).
* Hosts of other things that you can read about in more detail, straight from our members' keyboards.

Doyle Branxton Department of Mysteries | Introduction by TonksNymphadora
SnitchSeeker.com uses the Harry Potter novels to create a world of Pottermania on the Web. The site sorts members into their own houses at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where they can play along as a character of their own making. Members visit Hogsmeade on the weekends and school holidays, attend classes, as well as make wizard and witch friends in their own common rooms.
The Harry Potter novels have a tremendous influence on SnitchSeeker. The site is home to a radio thread that takes requests, with some of the members even reading out of the novels on the air.
There are fan fiction threads of all sorts based on Harry Potter and his friends and enemies within the books. Even some made-up characters find their way into the “fan-fics” as well as multiple characters from non-Harry Potter books.
Snitchseeker is a site full of fun, games, art and writing of all original forms from the members themselves. SnitchSeeker members all love the Harry Potter world and love to play with the theme, and invite everyone to come join in the fun, hang out and show your own style. Join the Snitchseeker family, we'd love to have you.

Doyle Branxton Department of Mysteries | A Concise History of SnitchSeeker.com by Taking Back Kirstie
SnitchSeeker.com was created in 2002 by Richard (a.k.a. Dumbledore). He wanted to create a Harry Potter forum where the fans run the site. A one-stop shop for anything a budding Harry Potter fanatic could ever need - a place to call home. Through multiple server changes, SnitchSeeker has only grown bigger and more popular than ever. Over time, more and more forums have been added, from fan fictions to role-play to a gallery for Harry Potter photos. The site is run by a group of wonderful moderators and administrators who are as obsessed with Harry Potter (or in some cases even more so) than the members themselves.

Doyle Branxton Department of Mysteries | News by Pottermaniac
Every day, the staff at SnitchSeeker.com brings its members the most recent Harry Potter news. Whether it be about the actors, J.K. Rowling, the movies, the books, various photographs, interviews, articles ... SnitchSeeker has it all. Included inside these articles are related links (e.g. videos, photos, source articles, etc.)
Most importantly, you don’t have to be a member of the site to view the news articles! However, only members can post their opinions in the news threads. The links to the 10 most recent articles are found on the index on the front page of the site and the rest of the news items (numbering close to 1,000 and dating back several years) can be found in the Daily News forum. If you want to be up to date on events concerning Harry Potter, or do a little research on past events, Snitchseeker is the place to check.

Doyle Branxton Department of Mysteries | Hogwarts School Role-play by Nabiya
The members of this site are sure to agree that one of the most exciting parts of SnitchSeeker.com is the Hogwarts school role-play (RP). The SnitchSeeker school RP involves Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Diagon Alley, The Hogwarts Express and Hogsmeade.
Before the beginning of every term, new and "unsorted" members are given the opportunity to participate in the "Sorting" ceremony. They are given a short questionnaire to fill out, which is judged by the administrators of the site, and they receive an answer a few days later informing them into which house they have been sorted (Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Slytherin or Ravenclaw).
Each sorted member can then create a character to use in the school RP. While some find it easier to just use their own names and personalities, most members find it infinitely more challenging (not to mention fun) to create an original character to act out.
After being sorted, "Diagon Alley" becomes available to members who wish to hone their RPing skills. They are given a range of shops (all mentioned in the Harry Potter books) from where they may buy the supplies needed for the upcoming term or merely to meet with new and old friends.
The Hogwarts school RP is held in a way that is very true to the books. There are Professors teaching all the subjects which are offered at the “real” Hogwarts, prefects from each house to monitor that the students adhere to the school RP and forum rules, quidditch matches, homework, final exams, detention, house points, common rooms, Hogwarts' grounds, hallways, etc.
And what really makes the SnitchSeeker school RP stand out is that it has a different central plot that everyone is aware of and participates in every term. One term there was the very evil Lord Voldermortist who came and terrorized the school with his band of Death Eaters, resulting in some professors and students losing their lives to protect the school. Another term dealt with a mysterious love potion being planted all over the school grounds, wreaking havoc among the staff and students. It's really interesting to see what creative ideas the staff members manage to cook up each term.
The school RP has its own timeline which is set roughly 50 years after Harry Potter and gang attended Hogwarts, thereby avoiding the possibility of somebody asking, "Why weren't these events or people mentioned in the books?"
Each term lasts three months before the End-of-Term Feast is held to mark the end of the term, and also to announce the winner of that term's House Cup. Afterward, the Hogwarts Express is available for students who wish to RP themselves leaving the school.
The SnitchSeeker school RP works hard to keep as close as possible to the school presented by J.K. Rowling and this is what contributes the most to its attractiveness.

Doyle Branxton Department of Mysteries | Witch Weekly by Pottermaniac
Every week, the SnitchSeeker.com staff interviews an active member of the site. These are posted in the Witch Weekly Forum. The interviews are interesting as well as entertaining. The various questions asked by the interviewer can range from “Do you prefer the books or the movies?” all the way to “What is your favorite desert?”
In this forum, you will also find a thread entitled Personal Pictures. Here, members can post pictures of themselves for all of their friends to see! Of course, the staff encourages the younger members to consult with their parents before posting.
Finally, you will find a game named Which SS member? The first person to post in the thread gives three hints and the next person must find which member is described by these hints and post three hints of their own.
Witch Weekly is a great forum. It gives all members of the site a fun way to meet other members.

Doyle Branxton Department of Mysteries | The Three Broomsticks by Pottermaniac
A brand new forum has recently been added to SnitchSeeker.com in April 2006. The Three Broomsticks is reserved for the many fan clubs in which members can talk about their favorite characters, actors and, of course, author J.K. Rowling. SnitchSeeker members hold positions as officers for these fan clubs and are in charge of preparing activities and contests.
Some of these activities are unique, but all the while pleasurable. For example, members have created everything from a list of the “101 Reasons Why Sirius Black is the Best” to a questionnaire by the Albus Dumbledore fan club. The winner’s prize being a signature announcing his or her victory. There are also inter-fan club competitions, the first one is currently taking place. Who is your (wo)man? A game based on the Snitchseeker's own Snape is my man! Members vote for their favorite character, actor or Rowling and the man or woman with the most votes win fabulous prizes for their fan club. In the first round, there has been more than 10000 posts!
The best part of the many fan clubs is the chance to participate, interact with like-minded members and share a sense of belonging. Whether it be in the many discussions about the characters and actors or the activities prepared, the time spent in this forum is sure to be enjoyable.

Doyle Branxton Department of Mysteries | Zonko’s Game Shop and Trivia by XoxXtinaxox09
Among the many features SnitchSeeker.com has to offer, one of the first places that attracts many newcomers is the Zonko’s Game Shop and Trivia forum. After a newbie (new member) has surpassed a minimum of 10 posts, the game threads are finally opened up for exploration. However, like every other forum on SnitchSeeker, in order for things to run smoothly, there are rules. Game ideas are generally submitted by members, approved by moderators and then run by the member who originated the idea. All games threads cannot exceed 4,000 posts, due to bandwith concerns. Once a thread reaches 4,000 posts, it will be closed and deleted by the moderators. Usually, the game will be replaced with a newer version. And whenever a new Harry Potter book is released, a spoiler ban automatically affects all SnitchSeeker games for several months.
Among the many different types of games Zonko’s offers, there are two special ones that have won the hearts of all who play. It is pretty clear to all that Snape is My Man (SIMM), an SS original game, is a favorite to the majority of the Zonko regulars. Though it’s cherished by many and in its 13th installment, the game is really quite simple. In order to win the beloved Snape, a member’s post number has to be a multiple of five (e.g. 5, 10, 15, 20, etc).
Another intriguing game that relates to Harry Potter is Virtual Quidditch. This game works using “moves” and “results.” Members make moves (e.g. shooting or passing quaffles, or sending bludgers) and then rely on team mates (other members of their house) to complete their moves with a result (bludgers hitting their mark, quaffles being intercepted or goals being scored).
As many SnitchSeeker members know, Zonko's is a great place for meeting new people and tying bonds. Though spam is discouraged, many members have been able to create special friendships. In one way or another, it's one of the best socializing threads on SnitchSeeker. And the greatness of Zonko’s is due to SnitchSeeker’s diversified membership. Simply put, it’s like a second home for many.

Doyle Branxton Department of Mysteries | Fan Fiction by Pottermaniac
What would a Harry Potter fan site be if there were no fan fictions? One of the major attractions of SnitchSeeker.com is Grimmauld Place, the forum that is home to so many fan-written stories as well as poems and art.
Within Grimmauld Place are various subforums dedicated to writing. These include:
- Character Stories
The stories in this forum focus on a single character.
- Comedy Stories
These stories are (as the title explains so well) funny. You will also find a game: The Evil Elite Fan Fic Dares. The members of the EEFFD (Those who have previously succeeded in completing a challenge) dare others to write a story. But there’s a catch, the story must include people, objects or quotes that usually add comedy to the story. There is a due date and, of course, it is always Harry Potter related.
- Epic and Adventure Stories
Tales of heroes and great battles.
- Romance Stories
Love, intrigue and surprises!
- Fandom Crossover Stories
Stories that combine Harry Potter's world with other fandoms.
- Other Stories
The stories that don’t fit in any of the above categories.
There are hundreds of great authors in these forums and even more stories. All we’re waiting for is you!

Doyle Branxton Department of Mysteries | The Sphinx’s Sofa by SenoritaMaxie
Among many other sections meant for SnitchSeeker.com members’ pleasure and delight, one of the main attractions for poetical SSers on SnitchSeeker.com is The Sphinx’s Sofa where members can display their love for poetry. The forum is purely dedicated to providing members a platform where they can convey their feelings about Harry Potter in rhyme. It boasts of almost 30 poetry portfolios (and still counting …!) where members regularly post Harry Potter-related poems to be reviewed and commented upon by other SSers. For members who would like to read non-Harry Potter poems, the Ye Olde Home for the Olde Poem subforum contains portfolio after portfolio filled to the brim with non-Harry Potter poems. Moderated by the resident poet Eric, the place also has a thread where SSers can talk about their favorite poems, poets and more.

Doyle Branxton Department of Mysteries | Fan Art by QuidditchChick
The members of SnitchSeeker.com are a truly talented group. This is clearly seen in the many drawings, sketches and even computerized images that make up the Fan Art section. Members are encouraged to show their love of Harry Potter and the world that J.K. Rowling created through these precious works of art. Many fans have created entirely original characters based on the world of Harry Potter and have submitted wonderful and unique drawings of them. All of the artwork is 100 percent fan-made originals, and ranges from the comically simple to the intricately detailed. Every piece of art is cherished.
Members of all age groups are able to appreciate these pieces due to the hard work and attention from the Fan Art moderators. They make sure that all work that is submitted is suitable for all age groups before uploading it for everyone to see.
The Fan Art section of SnitchSeeker is divided into four groups: Artist Showcase, Computer Made, Crafts and Traditional Fan Art. The Artist Showcase is when fan art is chosen from the gallery to be featured on the front page of the site. Artists whose work is featured are sometimes asked to do short interviews and get their own category in the gallery in which to submit their art.
The Computer Made Fan Art section is for artwork that is digital. Digital art, unlike traditional, refers to artwork originally created via the use of digital tools that mimic traditional utensils such as computer imaging/3D software, computer mouse, digital pen and tablet, or any similar tools. This section of the Fan Art forums is rapidly growing. SnitchSeeker has a lot of talented graphic makers and designers that share their computerized work, ranging from wallpapers to avatars to “transfigured” (merged) images, and even fan art done in Microsoft Paint or other Oekaki programs.
The Craft section is for members to share their homemade, Harry Potter related creations. This includes costumes or costume articles, homemade quidditch gear, hand-crafted wands, knitted scarves and anything else SnitchSeeker’s creative members can make.
The Traditional section includes any artwork created using a traditional (nondigital) medium (e.g. paint, markers, pencils, charcoal, etc). This section is home to the greatest amount of fan art.
Also, members are able to show off their Harry Potter and non-Harry Potter related artwork in the Artist Portfolio forum. In this forum, also known as Creative Tapestry, artists are able to create their own threads and submit their artwork for others to enjoy. This allows other members to view multiple works of art by a single favorite artist without having to dig through all the numerous other submissions.
The fan art is truly amazing and it is just a part of the wonderful things you will find on SnitchSeeker.com.

Doyle Branxton Department of Mysteries | Books and Movies Discussion by Pottermaniac
What would SnitchSeeker.com be without a place to discuss the books as well as the movies with other fans?
Flourish and Blotts, one of the many SnitchSeeker forums, is entirely dedicated to the discussion of the seven Harry Potter books. Yes, I said seven. Among the many subforums in Flourish and Blotts is an area to discuss predictions of occurrences in the upcoming final book. There is also a subforum for each of the six books that have already been published. In these forums, you will find various topics of discussion that range from theories and predictions to plots and various discoveries.
In addition, you will find many reviews for each book written by SnitchSeeker members, editorials and more theories where members can find the answers to mysteries with facts based on the books. You will also find the Quote of the Month and a J.K. Rowling Fan Club.
In the Wizarding World Network, a forum dedicated to the Harry Potter movies, you will find reviews and discussions concerning actors, special effects, crew members, sets, costumes, etc.
Here, you can also join fan clubs for the actors, post your own movie reviews or take quizzes created by other members. You can complain about the length of the movies, discuss differences between the movies and the books, or tell others how much you cried or why you jumped up with surprise.
For discussions on the books and movies, SnitchSeeker’s Flourish and Blotts and the Wizarding World Network are fantastic places to come. The members are active, polite and respectful enough for you to have a great time while giving out your opinions and ideas.

Doyle Branxton Department of Mysteries | Role-playing by Pottermaniac
An exciting part of SnitchSeeker.com is the forum known as Knockturn Alley. In this forum, SnitchSeeker addicts are free to role-play (RP) their favorite Hogwarts students or characters that they themselves have invented (a.k.a. “made-ups”). There is one condition, however, that the theme, characters or setting must be related to Harry Potter. Some might think that this condition does not leave much place for imagination, but SnitchSeeker RPers would disagree.
With more than 150 RPs currently in progress within three categories, SnitchSeeker RPers truly find themselves in heaven!
The three categories are:
- The Common Room, which is the most active category and can be used for all sorts of RPs – with all RPers warmly welcomed.
- The Riddle House, reserved for more advanced RPers who just can't stand one-liners or bad spelling.
- The Triwizard Tournament, is a roleplaying based tournament where members compete to be the champions.
As if that isn’t enough, there’s still more! For some of the older SnitchSeeker addicts, the Forbidden Forest section (restricted to 15 years or older) is home to the Salazar’s Lair thread. Although this thread is less active, the story lines are more developed and the RPers take more time to perfect their characters and the plot.
So, if ever you decide to drop by SnitchSeeker, don’t forget to visit the Forbidden Forest and Knockturn Alley. I assure you, you will be satisfied.

Doyle Branxton Department of Mysteries | Chats by Mamushkaleontti
SnitchSeeker.com has many Harry Potter-related chat threads, one of the most popular being “One Million Before the Order of the Phoenix." This thread is also known among SnitchSeeker members as the “TP” thread, where the title pretty much gives it away as collecting 1 million posts before the “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” movie is released. Administrators and moderators, make the TP more exciting by selecting creative titles and polls for members to enjoy every 4,000 posts.
In addition to the TP, SnitchSeeker has its own Java-based chat room where many of the members chat their way through their favorite fictional book and meet each other. SnitchSeeker also has a chat available in every language at the Department of International Cooperation, and in every fan club forum as well, to help members to meet each other and initiate various activities and discussions.

Doyle Branxton Department of Mysteries | ~~how Much We Love Our Staff~~ by Jessica AKA Jay, the Mod Stalker
When a sprawling website is overflowing with over 16,000 members, more than 9,000 threads, dozens of thousands of posts every day, hundreds of fan-fictions, heaps of role-plays, scores over scores of graphics threads, tons of poetry portfolios, an expansive gallery and an extensive school role-play, it is a titan’s task to enforce the site rules and regulations over members. But SnitchSeeker.com has it all ––– and alongside each and every SSer follows SnitchSeeker rules. There is absolute stability, perfect order, complete organization and ideal implementation of SnitchSeeker laws.
But who reads through the millions of posts every day on SnitchSeeker, tracking down and warning law-breakers? Who stops members from ruining chat experiences through idiotic conversation? Who provides SSers with juicy news, information, gossip and tittle-tattle about the Wizarding World? Who looks after the sprawling gallery and arranges it? Who looks after the technical systems and other forums? That’s right – Meet the SnitchSeeker staff: here.
SSers have a lot to thank the Mods for because there is no end to the number of jobs our beloved Mods do to make our surfing experience on SnitchSeeker so awesome, so to speak. No matter how much we thank them, it isn’t enough because they work too hard to shape up SnitchSeeker. The whole purpose of this write-up is just to tell how much we love our cute lil SS Mods. This set of awesome SS-shapers is a wicked, juicy treat for us all. We love them not only because they look after SS, but because they also come up with brilliant ideas to make our time on SnitchSeeker extremely entertaining. Moreover, we dote over them because these dears stop mischief-makers from destroying the fun-filled atmosphere of SnitchSeeker. They keep us updated with the going-ons of the Wizarding World. And they always let us know rules we weren’t previously aware of. We love our Mods because they keep everything about SnitchSeeker in order, uniformity and chord. But the best part is – they are never rash. Our SnitchSeeker Mods have always been strict and firm but also just, well-organized, reasonable, efficient – and downright nice, sweet and friendly.
The Wikipedia Project for Mods is a small attempt at telling our Moderators how much we swoon and drool over their sweetness and adorability. Thank you for all that you guys have done for SnitchSeeker.com. Without you, SnitchSeeker would seem so very barren. You are the ones that make it so special. Thank you for all that you have done for us.
