Long Term Assignment: Part 1

Kalen was sitting on his desk with all of the kids sundials spread out before him on a few tables. He was hoping people would show up, but then again it was a Saturday morning, so he couldn’t be fully sure.

Notebooks were arranged next to him, for the students to take and he had his question all ready to ask, now he just needed someone to ask it to!

OOC: Welcome to the first part of the Long term Assignment! The students will be interacting with Kalen as part of the assignment. Kalen will explain the first part of the assignment himself.

This thread will be open until February 20th.

Saturday morning or not, Rylee was up and ready to go. All things had been taken care of early, morning run which also included a quick trip to the barns and the Oasis, breakfast, showering and dressing for the day, tending to Lamb and checking up on Lilac. The whole rest of her day was left wide open for time with friends and some studying.

Before her relaxing weekend could really continue there was one stop that needed to be made this morning. The Astronomy room. It was time to get started on that long term assignment Professor Kennedy had assigned to them all. "Good morning, Professor!," Rylee chirped cheerfully making her way into the room and to her usual seat pausing momentarily before sitting down on her chair. Did she need her sundial or was she meant to get it later on when told to do so? There wasn't any instructions on that part.

Oh, well. She was already sitting and could get up and collect it if need be.

Jackson was ready to get started again with his sundial. He had quite enjoyed the project thus far, and he wondered how they would be proceeding. He walked into the classroom, not quite sure what to expect but surprisingly awake for a Saturday morning. “Good morning, Sir,” he greeted Professor Kennedy, taking one of the provided notebooks and taking a seat next to the other student present. “Hey Rylee!” Not surprised that she was here already if he was being honest.

Eeeeeehhhhhhh.

You know, Anna didn't really want to be there, but it was either that or dealing with her brother in the Common Room as he tried to make her focus on her OWLs studies. She supposed being in an informal lesson - which was what this was, right? She wasn't too sure, to be honest - was better since she could always chat with friends instead of paying attention to what was going on. AND she could tell her brother that it counted towards studying because, well, it was a lesson. Ish. It was, right?

As soon as Anna got there, she slowed her pace down. Oooh... not that many people there. Ugh. That meant she would have to actually pay attention as professor Kennedy talked to them. Nooooooo!

Merlin.

The Gryffindor did give everybody there a smile as she approached the table and grabbed a notebook, though. "Morniiiing!" She greeted those there in a sing-song voice, turning to go take a seat near her friends Jackson and Rylee. "Alright?"

DuckyLinJi 02-06-2019 07:37 PM

Any opportunity to learn more, Dorian would grab it. And that wasn't just because it was his O.W.L year. Opening the door, the Ravenclaw entered while taking his bag off his shoulders. "Good morning, Professor" he greeted the man first before he turned to see who else had decided to show up.

Anna and Jackson both got a polite and friendly "Good Morning" as well but Rylee... He walked towards the Gryffindor with quick steps and when he was in reach he playfully punched her shoulder, not hard for it to hurt. Rosie, Sup!" he grinned and then found a seat.

Kennedy was VERY lucky that Nettie liked him and his class, because she didn't get out of bed on a Saturday morning for just ANY subject. Yet she knew this was also going to help her grades, and let's be real - that was the true motivating factor here. Smiling as she walked in (and a bit fueled by her morning tea) she waved at the professor and took a seat.

"Good morning," she said quietly as she took a seat. Hmm. Scarce crowd so far.

Felixir 02-07-2019 12:34 AM

As a general rule, Abra didn't do assignments on weekends. He mainly did the whole 'wait until the very last minute' method, which was incredible stressful but kept his weekends almost entirely free, were it not for Quidditch practice and Prefect duties.

Not today though. It seemed like the start of this long term assignment was likely to be quite important in understanding the rest of it, something he'd need to know if he was going to do the thing right at the last minute, and so here he was.

"Morning, Professor Kennedy," Abra greeted the professor as he entered, initially heading for a seat before stopping, and eyeing up the sundials, and then the notebooks. "... Do we need to take a notebook, or...?" He trailed off, uncertain.

siriusblackliveson 02-07-2019 02:04 AM

Patrick walked in rubbing the sleep out of his eyes. He would have much rather been sleeping in today. But would he ever turn down a class offered by Professor Kennedy? No. Never.

He noticed that there weren’t many students in there. Did they not want their points? He noticed Anna and moved over closer to her just to pester her. Especially after dragging him through the maze. Who did such a thing. Finally getting settled he greeted Professor Kennedy “Hello Professor.” He sipped his tea hoping that it might liven him up.

Kalen looked around at the small gathering and decided he could start at least a bit for these kids, if other kids came in, he could explain for them.

“Good morning everyone, and welcome to the start of the long term Assignment, that will be taking place over the rest of the school year. Every few months I’m going to give you something new to do with your sundials.” He said with a grin as he motioned to all of the sundials in front of him.

“Today’s Assignment is pretty easy, I have a question for you all, and then we will be making a mark on our sundial to denote the current time.

You all are lucky that I’m not making you come back every hour to make a mark on the sundial at each hour, I’ll be doing that for you all. ”
He said with a grin

“As for the question, “Who is believed to have been the inventor of the universal sundial?” ” He asked as he sat on his desk looking at them.

OOC: Thanks for coming all! And don’t worry if you come in after this. It’s not a formal class, so feel free to have your charrie come in and Kalsn can ask the question to them!

For all of your here, answer the question and then we will move on! No rush! This thread will be open until February 20th! We have time. Thanks! Let me know if you have any questions!

Lissy Longbottom 02-08-2019 03:00 AM

Who invented the sundial? Hmmm. Nettie looked down at her notes and flipped through them a bit, trying to find the answer. She knew she had read about it in her reading somewhere, and had scribbled it in her notes...AHA! There it was. She raised her hand with a smile.

"Professor, the universal sundial invention is credited to Theodosius. He was a mathematician who made the dial that could be used anywhere on Earth," she explained. Hopefully Kennedy didn't need anything more specific than that, as that was all she had written down from her reading...

Jessiqua 02-08-2019 11:57 AM

Hanna knew she was running late. She was heading up the stairs as quick as her legs and lungs would allow her, but she was late.

Once inside, she said "Good morning Professor. I-I'm sorry I'm l-late."

She spotted her sundial and moved towards it, assuming they were out because they would be doing something with them during the day's session of the assignment.

Hanna heard the question as she made her way to a seat, and thought back to what she had read in her text book about sundials. It was a confusing thing because there were so many names, and so many different sundials, and thus so many creators. She had heard of Theodosius, as Nettie offered. There was another name that came to the top of Hanna's head, but she wasn't sure why. Raising her hand she said, "There was also uh... William Oughtred. I'm just not sure exactly what he invented."

Kalen nodded as Nettie spoke. “That is perfect Miss Gladin, you can take your sundial, and make a mark on the rock where the sun is hitting it now, and you can be done for today. ” He said with a grin before he turned to answer the next student.

OOC: You all have eight days left to answer the question and make a mark on the sundial!

Felixir 02-15-2019 11:25 PM

Okay, notebooks at the end. Good to know. Abra settled down and waited for this whatever-it-was to commence.

Well, this assignment didn't sound like it was going to be too difficult, at least from what Professor Kennedy had said so far. That question though. It was both more complicated than and not as difficult as Abra had been expecting. Probably much easier to those who had given their textbooks more than just a passing glance (which Abra had, as luck would have it, at least done).

"It's... Theo... Theoborius, or something like that," he tried, knowing he was probably getting the name completely wrong but having a go all the same, which was very unlike him. But, well, giving an answer was part of the assignment and all.

siriusblackliveson 02-15-2019 11:44 PM

Patrick racked his brain for who had invented the sun dial. Although he had some lingering questions about sun dials. He remembered something about a theo something or other. He couldn't remember the name, "Theo something or other created it. But I've got a question professor."

He paused for a second thinking over how he wanted to ask his question. He wasn't sure how to verbalize his thoughts. Taking a second, "During the winter wouldn't the sun have different markings based on how short the day is?" Or was he totally losing his mind?

DuckyLinJi 02-16-2019 10:32 PM

The Professor was going to mark their sundials each hour so that they did not have to do that? Dorian was happy about that. He was afraid he would forget to walk to the astronomy tower and mark his sundial in the first place while he was studying.

"First of, thanks for wanting to mark our sundials for us every hour, Professor" he said after raising his hand because he honestly did not NEED to do that, before he continued to answer the question. "Theodosius was his name and he was both a astronomer and mathematician. He also wrote a book about the geometry of the sphere" don't ask him the title of that book though, cause that he did not know.

Kolyander 02-17-2019 01:30 PM

Rylee smiled warmly at Professor Kennedy when he greeted her in return. Feet crossed at the ankles and swinging gently back and forth beneath her desk, she listened silently as the 'lesson' not 'lesson' began.

So they wouldn't have to return to the Astronomy tower or carry around their sundials and try to remember to mark them off every hour. This was seriously good news with how busy her schedule normally was, she might actually forget. So thank you professor! As for his question, Rylee's raised her hand into the air. "Theodosius of Bithynia invented the universal sundial." That much she knew. There was also the little bits of information those around her had given as well but was it truly necessary to constantly repeat what had already been said. Probably not.

“It would have less markings, that’s for sure. You’ll find out more about sundials during the winter during our next task in a few months.

For now, go make a mark and grab a notebook and get back to your Saturday.”
He said with a smile and a nod.

Lissy Longbottom 02-18-2019 02:56 AM

Wait, that was all they had to do? Well that was easy enough. Nettie smiled at Kennedy and marked her sundial where the sun was shining on it. She then stood up and grabbed a notebook as instructed before smiling at Kennedy again and heading out the door.

Nice and easy - hopefully the rest of this assignment would be just as easy!

Jessiqua 02-18-2019 07:27 AM

Hanna made a note of the correct person who invented the universal sundial. So many names, and she sometimes got a bit confused between one inventor of one type of sundial, and another. But this was learning, and if it came up in their exam she knew now. And she was going to go back and re-read the part in her textbook about the inventors so that she knew where she got her mind wires crossed. Being wrong was fine, but understanding why was very important for learning. Yep.

Jumping back up, she made that mark on her sundial before waving to Professor Kennedy and heading back out of the class.

MadMadamMalfoy 02-18-2019 12:18 PM

Hope we're not too late to join!

Tina was so late! She'd spent most of the night studying for her OWLs and only meant to sleep an hour or two, but eventually dozed off and didn't even hear her alarm go off. Still half asleep, the dark-haired Ravenclaw had grabbed her bag and sprinted to the astronomy classroom as fast as her legs could carry her - which, fortunately for her, was pretty fast. She leaned against the door for a few seconds, panting heavily. Thank Merlin the astronomy tower wasn't too far from Ravenclaw! Imagine if she'd had to make the trek all the way from Hufflepuff or Slytherin!

As Tina's breathing returned to normal, panic set in. She was never late to lessons, not even informal ones! Just how much trouble was she going to be in with Professor Kennedy? Just the thought of being told off in front of everyone made her shudder! She supposed the best thing to do was try to sneak in and not draw attention to herself, but before she could enter the room, he saw a couple of other students already leaving.

Had she missed the entire assignment? Oh no, oh nononononono... she needed the points from this to offset her less than perfect parks in DADA! So much for not drawing attention to herself... now she would have no choice but to ask Professor Kennedy if she could still do the assignment. Heart sinking and panic rising, Tina walked into the room with her head down to hide the blush on her cheeks. "Professor..." she said in a small voice, "Sorry I'm late...late night studying for OWLs and lost track of time." It was only then that she looked up. "Can-" Her mouth suddenly went dry; she swallowed hard and tried again. "Can I still do the assignment?"

DuckyLinJi 02-18-2019 12:48 PM

That was it?

Dorian looked at his classmates, wondering he had heard it right before stood up from his chair slowly and uncertainly. They could go? He had expected more but okay. At least he could go back to his DADA homework which he had been practicing before coming here. He quickly marked his sundial and then hoisted his bag over his shoulder and after a nod of his head towards the Professor he grabbed a notebook and turned on his heels to leave the room.

Kolyander 02-19-2019 02:01 PM

Rylee smiled warmly once again. She had known her answer was correct but having it confirmed by a professor always made her extra happy. It proved that a little studying went a long way. However what had taken place next she hadn't expected.

Was that all she had to do?

Mark the sundial, grab a notebook and leave? It appeared so as that's exactly what everyone else was doing. Well okay. Rylee got to her feet and made her way up to the desk to locate her sundial. Finding the one she had made quickly, she made a mark on it like told.

"Have a good day, Professor," she smiled at Kennedy as she grabbed a notebook which she slipped into her bag before heading out.

Kalen smiled at the out of break Ravenclaw. “You aren’t late at all Miss Dantes, and of course you can still do the assignment, Just answer the following question, make a mark on your sundial and then grab a note book.

As for your question: Who is believed to have been the inventor of the universal sundial? ”

He smiled at her and nodded at all the students who had made their marks and left.

OOC: I’ll be locking this thread tonight! The next part of the assignment will be up in the next few days

MadMadamMalfoy 02-20-2019 11:26 PM

Tina's mind raced as she waited for Professor Kennedy's reply. Just how much trouble would she be in? She was prepared for a reprimand or *gulp* points loss, but… Blink, blink. Tina could hardly believe her ears. So she wasn't going to get in trouble for being late, and she hadn't completely missed the assignment? It seemed too good to be true! For a minute she thought she must be dreaming, and any minute she'd wake up back in her dorm… but that didn't happen. Tina nodded, returning the professor's smile with a small one of her own. “Thank you, Professor.”

Tina bit her lower lip, lost in thought as she considered the question. She was still groggy from lack of sleep, and all the information in her brain was sort of running together. Come on, Tina! Think! She vaguely recalled reading about a Greek astronomer and mathematician who was credited with the invention of the universal sundial, but what was his name? Oh, yeah! “I think that was Theodosius of Bithynia,” she said, hoping she had the right answer.

After she'd answered the question, Tina found her sundial on one of the tables. The bright yellow and orange sun decoration in the center made it easy to spot, and she smiled a little at the sight. With a steady hand, she marked a line in the exact spot the shadow hit on her sundial to denote the current time. Then she picked up one of the notebooks. Was that it? It seemed too easy! Was she supposed to record her observations in the notebook and hand it in before she left? “Is there anything else I need to do?” she asked the professor.

Felixir 02-20-2019 11:53 PM

Okay. Well. Close enough! Abra could take that, he wasn't too far off.

With a smile at Professor Kennedy, Abra got to his feet and searched for his sundial from among where they were all being held for them, then returned back to his seat with it. He set the sundial down and, as Kennedy had instructed, located the point where the sun was currently hitting it and casting a shadow. Using the carving charm again, the same he had used to put his name on the underside, Abra scored a mark at exactly the right point on his sundial, then sat back again, satisfied.

Soooooo... that was it then? That was it then. All done, Abra returned his sundial, picked up a notebook, and with a wave, went on his merry way. "See you later, Professor."
