Default Professor Risu Antares' office
Encyclopaedia Galactica

OOC: Before posting in this office, please announce yourself here first.

(Si made this. <3)

Once Professor Antares has invited you in, you are free to enter his office. Close the door behind you, step into the room, take a look around.

There's not much to see. The large windows at the back of the room offer a spectacular view across the grounds, but the office itself has a Spartan look about itself. The professor is still in the process of moving in. Large boxes are stacked on top of each other everywhere. Along one wall, a large set of bookcases is halfway filled with heavy books, overflowing folders, and wrinkled magazines - more scientific journals, in some cases going back twenty years, to the days when the professor was just a humble graduate student. One shelf is empty except for a bound set of papers, the first copy of Risu Antares' doctoral thesis, and the end result of that set of papers, the framed diploma of a Doctor of Philosophy.

Most of the rest of the space in the room is taken up by a large desk. Not too much of the dark wood is visible - Professor Antares practices the first-available-surface method of filing, and has spread out journal articles, data sheets, and correspondence all over his desk. One corner, however, remains free of clutter. There, in another frame, rests a photograph of two smiling people, their arms wrapped around each other. Risu's parents.
The inscription on the frame reads Karin and Per Laelaps-Antares, Luleå, Sweden.

The Universe had much too much of it, and Risu's desk, large as it was, was in need of some - empty space. He scanned the stacks of paper and journals (white plains that would soon turn into hills) for the dark wood that would indicate empty surface, available for filing, but there was none to be found. With a shrug, he dropped the printouts in his arm on top of the latest Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. Then he looked up.

"Er, have a seat, Miss Force," he said, indicating the chair in front of the desk. Behind her, the other two students he'd invited in were still sitting in the waiting area - one was engrossed in a copy of one of Risu's journals, the other looked like he was still catching his breath. Risu wondered whether he'd climbed the walls to get up to the Tower.

He sat down on the chair on his side of the desk and looked at the young girl in front of him. His data sheets in mind, he said, "I guess we can get started already. What can I do for you?"

Maddie sat down.
'I - I was wondering if I could have a pass to be in the Observatory tonight, Proffessor?' she asked nervously 'If that's alright?'

"The Observatory?" Risu repeated blankly, his eyes skimming the first data sheet in front of him. Then he nodded. "Yes, yes, of course. Best to do something like that now before term gets going. Besides," he added, beginning to pat himself down for a pen (he disliked the quill - it gave him cramps in his fingers, and after many years with the Muggle tool, it came much more natural), "if I remember correctly, autumn gets awfully rainy and cloudy here. Not much to look at then. The skies won't clear up until winter arrives."

He finally located a pen in his breast pocket. With a click, the tip appeared. Risu peered at the girl. "The large telescope is off-limits, at least right now. I'm using it. So you can either bring your own collapsible, if you have one, or use one of the smaller school telescopes. Just remember to put them back into the cupboards afterwards."

Lifting stacks of paper here and there, Risu looked around for something to write on. "Er, I'll remember that you are allowed to use the Observatory," he flashed the girl a small smile, "probably anyway, but another teacher - or a prefect - wouldn't know. So if you don't want to get in trouble, keep the permission slip on you." Did he really not have a single blank sheet of paper? Or parchment? With a sigh, Risu took the first of his printouts and flipped it over. Hoping that none of the data on the front were important, he scribbled a note saying that the bearer was permitted access to the Hogwarts Observatory at night.

He signed the paper in his untidy scrawl and held it out to the girl. "There you go."

Maddie took the permission slip and put it safely in her bag.
'Thank you, Sir.' she said, smiling 'I'll remeber not you use the telescope, I've got my own. I just thought it'd be easier to see everything from the tower' she added. She wondered why she was rambling on like this...

Apollo walked ino the office, and listened as the Ravenclaw asked for a pass to the Observatory. He wasn't really paying attention to the conversation. He was too engrossed by all the books, and papers, and magazines, and was that the Professor's Thesis on one of those shelves? It was entirely cluttered, but extrememly interesting too see. He was just close enough to the Professor's Thesis to reach out and grab it, and was eyeing it wondering if he would get into trouble if he did.

The temptation was killing him.

"Don't mention it," said Risu. The large telescope in the Tower dome was locked anyway, he knew, but he had an idea that an ingenious and persistent student might be able to pick the lock. The telescope wasn't dangerous, of course, except perhaps to scientific ignorance (and the need to sleep), but he didn't want to find some student fiddling with the controls. Especially now that he was using it.

He glanced at the next data sheet just as the second student was coming in. After marking the column he had been reading very carefully with an X, Risu pointed towards a second chair. "Have a seat!" He turned to the girl again. "If you need an extension for that permit, let me know. And if you do get into trouble, tell them to talk to me." He clicked his pen menacingly, then grinned. "Would that be all?"

And here Risu was, juggling several - that is to say, two - conversations at once. "Erm... find anything you like?" he asked the male student in the Hufflepuff attire. He had not taken a seat. Instead, he had taken an interest. In the stuff on Risu's shelves.

O.o Oooops. Caught.

Apollo turned with a small smile on his face and reaplied, "Oh, um, Yeah...I was just noticing your thesis was sitting here." He wanted to reach out and grab it, but kept his hands in his pockets to keep the temptation at bay.

Realizing his rudeness, he continued with, "Apollo Leone, by the way. I just transfered here from L'istituto Italiano di Magia. I figured since I was new I would come visit one of the newer Professor's first, and seeing how I love Astronomy..." He trailed off trying to make is point known.

Studying the stars was extremely fascinating.

"Have a nice day, Miss Force," Risu replied. With a swish of hair, she was gone. There was only one other person in his office now, the Hufflepuff boy - until the third student he had invited to enter joined them. Whenever that was.

Risu studied the boy silently, listening to him talk. He did not recall anyone from outside the astronomer community ever taking an interest in his thesis, which was, as theses are apt to be, very long, very technical, very specific, and very very unreadable. "Yes, it is indeed, Mr Leone. Feel free to take a look," Risu added with a nod in the direction of the shelf, thinking that if Mr Leone were able to make sense of it, he could take over and Risu would be out of a job.

But, privately, he doubted it. Mr Leone cultivated good looks like farmers cultivated carrots, and Mr Leone was wearing a tie that looked like a construction barrier tape. Or, alternatively, a postmodern zebra crossing. Risu wouldn't mind a tie like that.

"So you are a transfer student? What year are you in, if I may ask? I spent two years at Hogwarts as a transfer. The final two." Risu did his customary gesture of ruffling his greying hair. "A long, long time ago, as they say," he said, flashing the boy a small smile.

Apollo almost went all grabbyhands, when the Professor gave im permission to look at his thesis, but decided against it. He was pretty sure it was all way over his head anyways. "Oh, I doubt I'll be able to understand any of it anyways, being a Doctoral Thesis, and all." He shurgged it off, and decided he would take a look some other day...even though he was very tempted to go grabbyhands and snatch it up.

Apollo finally walked over to a chair and sat down. He felt stupid standing up for so long. "I'm a fifth year. So I will have three years here. Unless of course I decide to go back." That thought has run through his head often since he first entered the gates of Hogwarts, but he wasn't completely for it. He couldn't go back. Not after.......

He snaped back to reality quickly before he let his memories escape with him. "But I doubt that I will..no matter how much I miss Italy, and my friends." He shrugged, and tried to smile, but it didnt work.

"Well, you never know," Risu murmured, but the boy decided to leave Risu's thesis be and sat down on the chair the girl, Force, had vacated just minutes before. Risu's own chair creaked homely as he leaned back to stretch. Wearing robes still felt a little awkward after a life of lab coats, work clothes, and, whenever those hectic and ungrateful periods of grant and sponsorship applications came around, ill-fitting suits.

Risu poked his bottom lip thoughtfully with his pen, listening and wondering how he had come to be a magnet for student problems. First the boy Jake, bullied, eight-fingered and zero-thumbed, now this young, apparently homesick.
It came with the territory, Risu supposed, poking away. His graduate students and fellow researches all had times when they needed support, but the mundane ("We're out of coffee. No caffeine for the next three weeks, Risu.") intermingled with the scientific ("Computer crash deleted my X-ray data of M82!"). These students were teenagers.

"Well, Mr Leone," said Risu, turning his lip-poking into a desk-drumming. The pen staccatoed away like a misbehaved metronome. "I understand your, er, plight. There were times during my time at Hogwarts when I wanted to return home too. Usually when Care of Magical Creatures was on my timetable." He flashed his amused smile again. "But I had lots of fun. Once the bandages were off again." He cleared his throat. "Maybe make some friends - I recall your house being very hospitable and friendly - and spend time with them. Be active! Do you like Quidditch?"

The REAL Sorting Hat: "Ravenclaw!" This monkey is bananas.

William realized that the man was cool just by looking at him as he stood and followed him into the office, his hand on the doorknob closing it behind him as he waited his turn to speak to him. Professor Antares seemed like the kind of man he could trust; of course he thought that about another professor at one point too and look where that had got him. Besides he needed to talk to him and he would let his nerves not get the better of him. Ari wouldn't want him to be scared of another professor, Kazi had been bad enough but Antares wasn't Kazi.

Walking into the room he looked around, and his eyes nearly popped out of his head as he gazed at the mysteries in the room. There wasn't much there, more boxes and books than anything, but he knew there were other things. The man was still getting acquainted with his new surroundings he assumed. Standing off to the side as he allowed the first girl to speak, he crossed his hands behind his back, a soft friendly smile on his face as he waited his turn. He wasn't going to be rude by speaking while someone else was speaking, after all his mother had taught him better than that.

Pulling a small pouch out of his pocket he opened it, popping a chocolate almond into his mouth and chewing quietly. He needed his sugar if he was going to get through this conversation without making a fool of himself he knew. If the last Potions professor had taught him anything, it was to be honest. Even if it meant making a fool out of yourself. While he would prefer to do it in private, he would speak if he had too.

Apollo watched, and was starting to get slightly annoyed with the Professor's unruley drumming with that dang pen. Though the annoyance slowly went away as the professor started talking about his own experiences at Hogwarts.

Of course Apollo had no problem with COMC, or any other classes for that matter. Except Arithmancy and Ancient Runes of course. He absolutley couldnt stand those classes, but everything else he was great at. Quidditch. He had never really played on a team, but was pretty fantastic when he was just off goofing around with his cousins.

"I know I should try to make friends. I have a problem saying things...nicely when I meet new people. I get nervous with new people and things come out rudely even though its not intended that way." He shrugged, and mussed his hair.

Thinking for a few minutes on the other suggestion that the professor had given him, he replied with, "Quidditch, I've never tried out for the team, but I'm better then my cousin's who are on the team in Italy." He grinned with an attitude that resembled arrogance.

"Weeell," Risu began, rolling the pen around in his fingers, "I would be the first to admit that I don't know too much about socialising - I'm here to teach about astronomy, as you know - but with your, er, unique background," his smile appeared once more, "I would think it easy to start a conversations, no?" He looked at Apollo questioningly. "Just... tell them you're from Italy, and then answer their questions. I'm sure there will be some."

With a sigh, Risu finally let go of the pen. It bounced onto his data sheets and lay still. "At any rate, Mr Leone, if you have an affinity for Quidditch, or the ability, you should try out for your house's team. I am told that once one is accepted, it is nigh impossible to escape one's admirers." Risu's grin became more pronounced. It took on a sarcastic glint. "Of course, if that became too much, you could acquire one of those terrible injuries Quidditch is also renowned for..."

Risu straightened up. He had spotted the third visitor from his waiting area lurking in the entrance to his office, near the door. "Ah, there you are!" he called out brightly. "I'm afraid I don't know your name yet, but I'm sure you wouldn't mind sharing. There's another chair here somewhere..." He looked around and found it. The seat was nearly disappearing below a huge stack of papers. Risu pointed at it. "Take that one. The papers... Er, just put them on the floor or something." He waved a hand vaguely. "What can I do for you?"

The REAL Sorting Hat: "Ravenclaw!" This monkey is bananas.

William smiled as he nodded, quietly moving to the seat that professor Antares gestured too, carefully moving the papers onto the floor after carefully neatening them. Call it OCD but he couldn't stand when things were cluttered or messed up. After he finished with the big stack, nice and neat he smiled again and introduced himself, "My name is William Cullack Sir, I'm a fourth year." he paused, wondering if he should continue to speak about why he looked like a fifth year instead of a fourth year. He sure was old enough, being 15 and all but since he had missed last term due to unforeseen circumstances - and form what he heard it had been a good thing - he had to take fourth year over again. which he didn't mind much.

But getting back to the matter at hand he looked up at the professor with a shy smile. "I actually came to say that I don't expect to pass your class." he said in a normal voice void of any nerves he might have been feeling. Why admit to a professor that the class you were taking was one of your worst. Hopefully Antares wasn't anything like Kazi who had taken off almost 100 points for him speaking up. Only one way to find out he thought looking the man in the eye. "It's not that I won't try, it's just that Astronomy and me don't get along. I mean I love the planets and stars but learning about them is different than just watching them from my window."

And there he goes rambling along like a little stuttering kid he thought shaking his head and wishing he had a sugar quill to suck on. He looked over to the other boy and smiled shyly, probably feeling just as nervous as he appeared to be. Probably not though. Will's problem was his lack of self esteem and right now it was showing.

He looked at Apollo questioningly. "Just... tell them you're from Italy, and then answer their questions.

"If I tell them where I'm from...they start to ask questions. Questions that I don't particularly want to answer." Apollo replied. It was true. They always ended up asking him why he came to Hogwarts, why he didnt just go back to Italy, etc. He didnt want to answer those questions, and according to another Hufflepuff, his cover story wasn't as convincing as he thought. He was never going to be a good liar. It was in his nature to be honest, even when it was rude.

Apollo grinned at both suggestions. They were both good, and true in every aspect. But he wasn't quiet sure he wanted all that popularity. He just wasn't good at being sociable, but he figured it was kind of acceptable to be slightly rude if you were popular. Most of the popular's usually were. "I'll have to think about it. I'm more of an....academic. But I dont know...I might give it a chance." He gave the professor a small smile.

"Thank you," Risu called out to the boy in the background, then, as the boy began shifting papers from chair to floor, neat and careful as a university librarian, Risu turned back to Apollo. "Questions you don't particularly want to answer," he repeated musingly, poking his chin with the pen. That sounded most ominous. He made a mental note to maybe ask the Hufflepuff Head of House about the young Mr Leone when he got a chance, just to find out what the exact circumstances of his transfer were. If he found out who the Hufflepuff Head of House was.

Then he brightened up. "An academic! Capital. I do believe we are always needed. And perhaps you could exercise not only your body on the Quidditch pitch but also your mind. I'm sure your captain would appreciate any tactical input on your part. Maybe a strategy of yours would even become known as 'the Academic', hmm?"

The other boy - name o' William Cullack - meanwhile had moved his chair next to Apollo's. Risu's expression of good humour was slowly replaced by one of confusion as he listened to the boy talk. This sounded serious... Maybe Risu should have delayed the conversation until Apollo had left, but now that William had got started, Risu would just have to find a gentle, sympathetic, and understanding beginning. "Professor Antares, please," he said, "not 'sir'. You'll be making a lot of venerable old men very angry if you call me sir, and at their age, that's not a good idea. I wouldn't want to be responsible for that."

He placed the pen on his desk with care. "Now, Mr, er, Cullack. Mr Cullack. I appreciate your frankness and honesty, but I don't believe for a second that you'll struggle in my class. I fully intend to mark every exam with a passing grade this term, and that includes yours." Risu looked at the boy closely. "What specifically do you have problems with?"

Apollo could see the assumptions in the Professor's eyes. He now had to explain a little more. How was it that this Professor could get him to talk so easily? "Yes. I came here because I wanted too, not because I got into trouble in Italy. I had some.....issues there that I just...couldn't handle." More like an issue, and I ran away from her. He gave a grave smile and decided not to divulge much more information. He was in a word...embarrased.

Hmmm....The thought of actually being useful to the Quidditch team, other then being just another player, made him think. He liked the idea and was suddenly wondering when tryouts were. "Agreed, Professor. I think I will go look into that now." He quickly stood up, and headed towards the door. "Thank you for giving me some time and advice. I can't wait for your first class." He waved, and then headed out the door.

The REAL Sorting Hat: "Ravenclaw!" This monkey is bananas.

William looked over to the other boy, now very aware that he could very well take all this for blackmail material later, even if they didn't know each other. but at this point it was too late, and he didn't know the memory charm to fix it. Al well he was already the strange boy with the vial around his neck. Glancing back to Professor Antares he smiled shyly, holding his head up high. "Well professor, you certainly are different than the other professors we've had in this class." he said with a hint of mirth in his eyes, which dropped off quickly.

"I don't understand any of it. Everyone always talks about constellations and varieties of meteorites or whatever their called and frankly I can' never see anything when I look in my telescope, all I see are a bunch of stars randomly placed. " he explained shrugging as bit as his hands clenched around the handle of his bag. He wasn't making much sense, yet this subject just didn't make sense to him. To him they were always talking about muggle accomplishments in Astronomy, but what about the wizarding ones? Surely there had to be a wizard who had ventured into space and lived to tell the tale? "It's nothing about you si...Professor Antares, it's just, to me it seems rather pointless." there he had said it.

Sometimes William hated speaking his mind like everyone kept telling him too, it made him say things he didn't want to say, like his last sentence. He was a man now though and was going to take anything that was dealt to him. Even if it meant another 100 points from Ravenclaw. "I"m sorry professor, it's nothing about you, I just get a bit annoyed when we always learn about the muggles and their achievements, but what about the wizards? Surely we've done extraordinary things too with Astronomy." he stated, now crossing his arms, his eyes curious.

OOC: I'm so sorry I didn't reply sooner, I hadn't noticed that you'd posted for some reason... =[

"Indeed," Risu said, nodding gravely, "and we shall hope that once your excellent education at Hogwarts has been completed, you perceive yourself to be up to the task of tackling your," he paused delicately, "issues again." Then Apollo stood up to leave. "Sure, please. Any time, Mr Leone," said Risu, and watched quietly until the student had left.

He turned to William, listening with the tips of his fingers placed together thoughtfully. Where to start with this one... "Well," he said carefully, trying not to feel as if he had to defend himself. "The question of pointlessness is, of course, a rather subjective one. I can accept that not everyone necessarily has the same... enthusiasm for this subject as me." He smiled faintly. "Although it rather puzzles me. Astronomy, like any other area of science, is driven by curiosity and a search for understanding. Maybe more so than, for example, biology, which has the possibility for advances in medicine or similar things, but I should think that discovering the laws that govern nature is a very interesting and very rewarding pursuit. Or consider the possibility of finding life on other planets..."

Risu shrugged. "If you are looking for practical applications of astronomy... Searching the skies for intercepting asteroids, for example. Mining the Moon or the asteroid belt, which are both extremely rich in resources. Colonising other worlds - which, given the eventual demise of our star, will become necessary at some point. But personally, I've always thought that the studying itself was the most important thing. Furthering our knowledge of the cosmos is an achievement that goes to the credit of our entire species."

He shrugged again. "As far as witches and wizards in astronomy go... It is, I would suggest, a simple matter of numbers. As there are many more Muggles than wizarding folk, even in the small community of astrophysicists, it seems to me that by that fact alone, most discoveries will be made by Muggles. And as we must adhere to the Statute of Secrecy, we appear to be just ordinary people. No one around me had any idea I was a wizard when I was a working astrophysicist." He waved a hand.

"At any rate, the days of the 'lone genius' are long gone. Today, most discoveries are group efforts, especially where large telescopes and similar equipment is concerned. Scientists publish with co-authors or collaborations, not on their own. And you will probably find the occasional witch or wizard in those papers, sure."

The REAL Sorting Hat: "Ravenclaw!" This monkey is bananas.

William realized he might have offended the professor and blushed profusely. "I'm sorry professor if I made you feel like you had to defend yourself. I tend to make others feel bad and think that they need too. It's one reason why I don't speak up in class. I do understand where you're coming from and I do love the stars, possibly not as much as you do I'm sure." he stopped, crossing his arms and smiling a bit. He understood where Antares was coming from, he felt the same way as potions. "I want to try and understand Astronomy more than I used too, especially for it's healing purposes. I heard that in some cultures, they go by the stars to find out when they get sick and heal from the stars or something like that." well he wasn't sure if that was true, but it could be. They didn't know everything about the stars or the purposes they truly carried.

Smiling timidly he took out a sugar quill glancing at him. "Do you mind if I have one?" he asked, gesturing to the confection in his hand. He didn't want to get into too much trouble with him; he liked this man he was someone William could easily speak too. Turning back to the subject at hand he smiled, "Well studying is important in everything we do from getting up in the morning to falling asleep at night, it's the choices we make that deter us form actually learning everything we can. And I know about the Secrecy which I still don't understand fully but that's another topic for discussion." he paused, moving in his chair to get more comfortable. "How did you manage to keep that a secret though? That's one thing i can never understand fully; I mean I know we need to pretend to be muggles when we're not at school, and it must have been over difficult for you especially in your field when you were a astrophysicist, especially when you find something that no one else could." he explained grinning a bit.

"I do have some enthusiasm for Astronomy professor Antares, I mean there's so much we'll never know about it. And I think that's the one thing that's deterring me from actually enjoying this class fully. I love the Divinational properties of the stars though, I can tell you that has been helpful." William said nodding eagerly. See he didn't hate the subject totally he just didn't understand it fully. And he hated things he didn't understand fully. Ravenclaw moment.

OOC: It's okay

"Healing purposes?" Risu repeated blankly. He waved his hand absent-mindedly, indicating that it was alright for William to eat the sugar quills. Then his eyes refocused. "I have to say that's the first I've ever heard of that. I wouldn't be surprised if ancient cultures have thought that - the skies have always held tremendous fascination for humans - but as my research concerned itself more with the physical properties of the cosmos, I'm not aware of any actual evidence for such health benefits. Similarly," he continued slowly, and carefully, "in Astronomy, we do not investigate any kind of, er, hypothesised influence of the stars or planets on human affairs. I appreciate that this kind of divination is, er, very inexact and difficult, but I have never had much interest in it. Perhaps," he added diplomatically, "because most of the time I came into contact with it, it was in the form of artless Muggle horoscopes or similar stuff, but in general, this is more up your Divination professor's alley than mine."

Risu paused. He felt a little uncomfortable, aware that he had come close to criticising a colleague's subject. But it was true, he had never had much patience for Divination, not least when, at school, it had been one of his worst subjects. A star had seemed grandiose and fascinating enough already without adding metaphysical or supernatural significance to it. He gladly followed William's change of topic.

"That was actually rather easy." Risu put the tips of his long fingers together again and stared at the ceiling for a few moments. He smiled, more to himself than for the boy. "It might come as no surprise to you, but magic isn't something that ever interested as much as astronomy. And while I can do enough magic, my abilities are not in any way noteworthy. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the cleverer students here could beat me in a duel, for example. Magic is... convenient, but I've never felt like I needed it."

Ellie barged through the office. After she was invited, of course, but she pretended that she wasn't waiting to be allowed in.

"Professor, I need you." was all she said. She said this in a 'you got some 'splainin to do' way.
