Default Review: The Secret of Kells on DVD

The Secret of Kells is a breathtakingly visual film, in that along with the well-written characters, they are surrounded by bright, stylistic, and astonishing attractive backgrounds, made of various designs and doodles. The bright greens and eye-popping hues are blue are those you simply can not take your eyes off, but aren't so distracting that you forget to pay attention to the from the overall storyline.

The film follows a young orphan named Brendan who lives with his uncle Abbot (voiced by Brendan Gleeson of the Harry Potter films), who is a loving man, but far more interested in the fortification of the town's wall than his nephew's incredibly vivid imagination. Brendan is led by Brother Aidan, and dashes off to a forest, where he meets a nymph named Aisling. Brendan and Aisling come together as friends, trying to work out how to save the village in peril, and find out what indeed is the secret of Kells.

The film is overall a wonderful work of art, minimalistic in drawing but vivid in character and background, which itself is a mixture and modern and traditional art traditions. It works for kids, especially those with the biggest imaginations, and art enthusiasts and critics who are eager to see a different take on the old 2D, hand-drawn method of animated film-making.
