The next day, Potter asks me out. Again. I scream at him that if he asks me again I will jinx him and turn him into a cockroach. Sirius watches in amusement, while Remus pointedly looks away.

“I think you should give him a chance, Lily,” says Meagan quietly when we arrive in Transfiguration.

“Um, I think not, judging from the way he acts 24/7. I’m sorry, but no. I’ve already gone over this yesterday.”

Meagan looks mildly surprised. “With who?”

My eyes dart over to Sirius, who has just entered with Desiree. “No one.”

“Sirius?” She noticed my quick glance.

“No. Yes. Oh, I’m not supposed to say, he told me not to, so don’t spread it.”

Then I tell her all Sirius had confessed to me on the Hogwarts Express. When I finish, she looks at me stubbornly. “Well, I agree with Sirius, for once. I think you should say yes, because I’m sure James isn’t really like what he usually is. I bet he’s actually a good guy at heart who would treat you better than anyone would.”

I watch as Potter takes a seat behind Sirius (who is sitting with Desiree), looking a bit sour at the loss of his best friend’s presence.

“Well, how’s this?” I say, smirking because I know she would decline. “If I go out with Potter, you have to tell Remus that you like him.”

Meagan’s face pales a little. “No! No. I don’t even like him.”

“Fine, then, I’m not going out with him.”

She narrows her eyes at me, but drops the subject.

“Sirius is so sweet,” Desiree squeals the moment we’re out of class. “You should have heard the things he was saying; I didn’t even know he was capable of even thinking of –”

I force myself to listen as she rats on, Meagan nodding her head or smiling whenever there is a pause. Eventually I stop listening to her, watching Sirius walk with his friends a little ahead of us.

“Personally, I don’t think I’ve ever had a better boyfriend,” Desiree concludes her story in the Great Hall.

“I’m really happy for you, Desi,” I say with a strained smile.

“Aw, thanks, Lil, you’re sweet.”

I really like Desiree.

She’s a lot like me, actually. Outgoing, popular, smart, and funny. While I don’t like to hear it, I’m kind of arrogant; she knows how to – how should I say this? – strut her stuff. We both know how to dazzle the opposite sex.

I asked her out because of those reasons. I really thought it would be a good relationship, but then she had to barge in. I can’t like Lily Evans; I would never, ever risk my friendship with James for anything in the world, especially some girl. The girl.

I decide to push the thought to the back of my mind for now; as soon as I enter the common room, my stomach shifts slightly, for nothing could be mistaken for that dark red hair. “Sirius!” she exclaims in surprise when I approach her. “What are you doing here?”

“What, a guy can’t go to his own common room?” I say casually with a faint smile. There aren’t a lot of people in the room. “Who are you? You look a lot like this girl named Lily Evans that my best friend is in love with.”

“Ha, ha, very funny,” she answers sarcastically. “Please don’t bring him up again, he’s driving me nuts.”

I sit on top of the table which she has her stuff on. “You know you like him.”

“No.”

“Yeah. You’re too afraid to admit it,” I tease her, watching her eyes narrow, “because then it will mean he won and you lost.” Sometimes I don’t understand myself; why is it that when I have feelings for this girl, I’m trying to convince her that she is in love with someone else?

What am I saying? I don’t even like Lily Evans.

No, I really don’t like him, Sirius. Please don’t say that,” she says through gritted teeth; there is a dangerous edge to her voice. I immediately drop it – redheads tend to have a nastier temper than anyone else.

“What’s that?” I ask to interrupt the silence, beckoning to her book.

“Oh, some dumb book that I don’t even like. My mom recommended it to me, but I’m not so into reading about people rescuing animals.”

“Would you save a dog in trouble?” I can’t help asking.

“Of course, I love dogs.”

Heh, so she’d like my being an Animagus.

“What?” says Lily, looking bemused. I hadn’t realized I was smirking at her rather vividly.

I merely laugh and get up. “Uh, no, it’s nothing.”

“You’re odd, Sirius Black.”

“So are you, Lily Evans.”

Our eyes lock, and for a moment I consider giving up trying to stay away from her. Then she tears away her gaze. “I need to go and return this book,” she says, flushed. “I’ll see you.”

“See you later,” I say as she smiles and leaves the common room. Feeling rather happier, I walk over to James, who is in a serious conversation with Lewis Crookbain and Eric Whale, abruptly stopping when I approach.

“Uh, telling secrets?” I say, my eyebrows rising.

“We should have a party for him,” Eric exclaims, pointing to James.

“Why?”

“Because Lily –” Lewis starts, but James slaps a hand over his mouth.

“I haven’t told him yet – don’t ruin the surprise,” he says quickly. My suspicion arises.

“What did Lily do?” I demand as soon as he pulls me into the dormitory.

“Nothing. I’m telling people that I asked her out, and she said yes.”

I merely look at him. “She didn’t, though.” It isn’t a question, but a statement.

James grins sheepishly. “Well, no. But I figure she’ll eventually how genuinely great I am and everything will be great.”

My jaw drops in disbelief. “James, that is the stupidest thing on this planet. She’s just going to despise you even more, if it’s even possible. Tell those people you were kidding or something, because it’s bound to spread fast and reach her in about five minutes –”

“I already told about twenty people,” he interrupts calmly.

“You –”

“So it’s too late. Come on, Padfoot, relax. My plan’s going to work, I know it.” He climbs into bed; as he grins, this time victoriously, I don’t crack a smile.

I mean, I love him and all, but that is just ridiculous.
