"Please raise your hand next time, Miss," Preston let his eyes drift to the parchment. "Zabini-Riddle. While the first part of your answer is correct - and we'll talk about food more in a bit - you can indeed transfigure live organisms without doing them harm." He smiled at the girl. Perhaps he'd demonstrate later. "I could transfigure you into a creature right now, and return you unharmed. But I promise you I won't."

"Good good. Can you say any more?" Professor Kingsley nodded at the boy.

"Professor, transfiguration has to do with magically altering things, correct? It's not just changing one thing into a completely other thing, though that's what people most commonly think of it as. There are spells in transfiguration that simply change the properties of things. So, I would say that transfiguration works by magically altering specific properties of a person, animal, object, substance, or element" she said, feeling kind of okay about her answer. It sounded sort of intelligent, right?
"Well said. Yes, a switching spell, for example, could only change one thing. And," he took a few steps toward the other end of the classroom. "I believe last year, you turned parts of your body into fruit?" Not exactly his idea of responsible education, especially with the younger students. However...

"I am glad you mentioned properties. This will be very important later."

I don't know a teacup or something, it'll look like a teacup, but it would still be my scarf." he said. It was like the Professor explained to him earlier. If he transfigured himself into something else, he'd just look like that something, he wouldn't become it.
With a smile for Mister Phillips, Preston responded. "Well said. It would even break like a teacup if you smashed it, but in essence, it remains your scarf." He looked around the room. Were they following?

"We'll talk more about this later. Thank you for raising that point."

Another hand and another fine answer! Professor Kingsley nodded at the Head Boy. "Indeed. Sometimes the temporary part it intentional. And at others, because the strength of the spell has faded. Good." Others?

"Again, a reminder to please raise your hand. Thank you." Preston considered the girl. A Miss Silver? Young. That tempered his response. "Well, yes, Transfiguration is transfiguring, but the word itself implies that. Is there another way to say what you mean?"

"Of course, there are rules that apply in which your magic is limited. For example, according to Gamp's Law of Elemental Transfiguration, you can't conjure food." She thinks she has this. Points, hopefully! Ravenclaw needed some. Third place was unacceptable.
Preston nodded again, noting the lack of a hand. "Excellent. Thank you for mentioning Gamp, Miss Stone. We will come back to that, as well." Preston gave the child a small smile, impressed she knew Gamp as a first year.

Preston nodded again. "Thank you."

Stopping in front the class, Preston addressed them again. "You've raised some good points and a few of you have hit on some very important concepts: concentration, properties, laws." He paused. "However, most of you are telling me what Transfiguration is instead of how it works."

He surveyed the class. "Does anyone else want to offer their thoughts?" He looked around in particular for Miss Toussaint, expecting her response, but finding her not in the room.

"Anyone?"
