"Ye-es..." Truebridge fixed his gaze on the little boy. That was the point of the lesson. Shield charms. Still, at least he was trying.

"Finite and the Patronus have already been said, please play attention. They are correct however."

Bending over in her seat, the Hufflepuff began to rummage through her bag. Transfiguration...Transfiguration...Transfig-AHA! Pulling out a stack of parchment, she thumbed through it until she found the sheets with the right dates. For a minute she didn't read, she just wrinkled her down-turned nose and thought about how bad her handwriting used to be. But then the teenager remembered where she was and what she was supposed to be doing.

There was stuff about vanishing and stuff about animals and stuff about unvanishing and stuff about...wait. No. That was everything.

No shield spells. Vanishing people could be defensive, but it wasn't a shield. And then transfiguring - unless!

With an image of a scorpion-skinned Cela in her mind, Wesley raised her hand high, "Professor; you could transfigure your skin into a harder kind of animal skin by saying 'Bestiar Skin!' and thinking of some kind of animal with hard skin. Like a scorpion or a....armadillo! It'd be like a full body shield!"

Oh boy! She needed to drink water more often. All this hydration was making her smart.
"Thats some very clever thinking and indeed there is a spell which I do intend to teach those of you who are part of the duelling club, during an after hours session. The only thing with the Bestiar method would be that you'd have to be sure your movement isn't obstructed, you wouldn't want to be completely incased in a shell of sorts I'm sure." Truebridge answered, pleased with the outside of the box thinking.

Leaning forward so she was able to put her elbows on her knees, and hold her head up with her palms, she looked around, waiting to see if anyone was going to say the spell. No one? No, there was that one kid, who pretty much didn't know the answer either. Maybe she could just start naming off stuff. Mwaha!

"Isn't there one that like, starts with a B? Or...no. S? ...I?" Pfft, she couldn't remember. There was too much going on to really absorb information during the summer.
"Third time's the charm, Evelyn." Truebridge answered.

Defensive spells:
- Protego - Shields
- Expelliarmus - Disarm
- Expecto Patronum - conjures patronus.
- Finite - stops spell effects (From DADA book)
- Incarcerous - Ties with ropes.
"Actually it can in some ways. Do you mind if we come back to your question? It is an important one."

Sidney takes our her transfiguration textbook and looks up arrow charms. Oh yeah, the Arrow charm. Sidney raises her hand. "The Arrow Charm shoots arrows out of the end of your wand. The Incantation is Shrowan, and the wand movement is a jabbing movement. I would call that a very sneaky defensive charm, sir. Did you use it last term in the fifth floor bathroom?"
Truebridge frowned and rubbed his arm where there was, beneath the sleeve that hid it, still a scar.

"We are talking about shields. I don't believe arrow conjuring was mentioned even once. Put your transfiguration book away Sidney, and pay attention."

Weird. Surely that kid couldn't read his thoughts or anything, right?

Or no... that would be an offensive spell, wouldn't it? Oo! What about a Disillusionment Charm?!" she asked in an excited voice. Hiding yourself... that was definitely defensive, right? Learning to do a Disillusionment Charm would be awesome!
"Disillusionment is defensive. Today we're focusing on shielding rather than stealth spells however." He nodded at Cadence.

"Switching spells can be useful for that, so can the shield spell which reverts glass to sand that was mentioned before. Good question and another that will be addressed shortly."

She paused, "You also don't have to hold it steady the whole time. Its not as strong of a shield as Protego, but it stays up and allows you to cast other spells."

Had she been third year? Hummmm. Yes. She'd learnt that in her third year.

"Thank you Celandine. Impiriano is the other shielding spell we will touch on for precisely the reason you have given. All shields have their purpose. Protego is one of the stronger and easier to cast shields, but you do need to drop it in order to attack. Impiriano you can conjure as a one way barrier, though it will not stand up against a particularly strong barrage of magical energy, though it is useful against conjured and physical items such as arrows, ropes or even animals."

He paused and looked around, a few of the suits of armour got a bit restless and clattered as they shifted from foot to foot.

"The 'glass to sand' shield, isn't specifically for that purpose, that is, it doesn't only work on changing glass into sand. Rather it is a shield which is used to revert physical things to a former state, whether they are transfigured or not. It has its limitations but as with any spell, in the right situation it is invaluable. Keeping in mind that it changes things back to a former state, what transfiguration spell might be its root?"
