Most of the spells in Harry Potter are in Latin. So, it is very easy to go look up in a dictionary and read the American/British meaning, then use it.
EXAMPLE: Duo Inflictum. "Duo" means two in Latin, with "Inflictum" which means Inflict, could mean "Hit twice" or "Hit two."
