Current Article: Does the Wand Make the Wizard? who cares? I’ve got a new job!

Mrs Elliot and Mr Spinks proud of amazing achievements of Jane Holland. Realized that Self would miss Mrs. Elliot and Mr. Spinks. Also realized Self would not miss Mr. Cole. Jane Holland could, if career as self-help writer falls through, make money impersonating animal sounds.

Consider using Quills from now on.

“I knew you would, dear! I knew someone would see the value in you eventually!” Mrs. Elliot’s eyes crinkled at Jane in doting, old lady smile. “And now you can move on to bigger and brighter things and leave us old fogies behind!”

Jane, who had been staring at the parchment in her hand with an expression of childish glee, slowly lowered it and looked up at Mrs. Elliot. She had, of course, known that it would mean her leaving. That had kind of been the point after all, but it hadn’t truly sunk in that she’d be leaving people behind.

“Oh! But I’ll miss you. I’ll visit, I promise!” She leaned down and wrapped the older woman in a squishy hug, suddenly thankful that the woman had been so nice and welcoming to her. “And I’ll still come to bingo night!”

A gravelly chuckle was heard from behind her and Jane straightened up and turned towards the sound. She smiled at the sight of Mr. Spinks who had that grandfatherly look on his face that always fluctuated between the two extremes of disapproval and pride.
“I knew you could do it, Janey. You are a wonderful writer.”

“You are! Wonderful!” Mrs. Elliot agreed and clapped her hands together a few times. “Back to work! Back to work! David, come with me, we have things to discuss.”

Jane wrinkled her nose and took her broken pencil back to her desk. She wouldn’t be starting at the Daily Prophet for awhile and she did technically still have work to do here. She sat down and fussed around a bit to make it look like she was working, since clearly ---CLEARLY-- it was impossible for her to actually accomplish anything except for self-congratulatory squeeing. She glanced up at Mr. Cole once and immediately looked away.

Eh. Won’t miss him.

Apparently Jane had managed to make her glance invitational though, because Mr. Cole suddenly appeared behind her, still seated on his rolling office chair and breathing creepily on her neck. Jane cringed a little and turned around slowly to see him smiling beadily at her. He made a sudden move, much like he was saluting with his wand before starting a duel.

OhMyMerlin! He’s finally cracked! He’s going to murder me!

Jane jumped and tried to focus on the wan… oh. The pencil. She blushed and her eyes flickered down to the one she had had a hissy fit over a few moments ago, then back up at Mr. Cole as he stretched out his gnarled and shaking hand, the fingers gripping the new pencil so tightly that his tobacco stained joints were turning white. He let out a slow and sticky breath, an alarming little mist hitting Jane’s neck and the exposed skin of her chest.

Ew.

She offered an awkward little smile and tentatively reached out her hand to take the pencil, noticing as she did so that the pink nail polish she wore was chipped and needed a touch up.

“…I’ll miss you when you’re gone.” Mr. Cole told her breathily and thrust the pencil into Jane’s hand. The pencil was clammy and Jane looked down at her hand and at her fingers as they closed reluctantly around the pencil.

“…I kissed it for luck.”

Jane let out an uncomfortable, mono-syllabic, high-pitched sound, managing to like a cross between a seagull and a donkey.

“…Thaaaaaank you?” Jane’s voice rose, subconsciously asking if he was going to leave her alone now. Yes indeed. She desperately needed to go wash now. She couldn’t help moving her fingers experimentally and in a disgusted sort of fascination, attempt to figure out what part of the clamminess on the pencil was slobber and what part of it was sweat. Though really, if she was going to experience old man bodily fluids, Jane was glad it was those two; all the other options were too alarming to consider and yet she was convinced it wouldn’t be beyond Mr. Cole to attempt to share more of himself; boogers and blood were not on her agenda.

“Welcome.” He breathed on her again and started peddling his feet backwards, pushing against the ground and rolling himself and his chair back to his desk without taking his beady eyes off of Jane for even a moment. He even continued to stare at her for a few minutes once he had reached his desk.

Completely grossed out, she watched him and then, when Mr. Cole pulled another pencil from his drawer and started smooching it noisily, Jane’s eyes widened in alarm and she practically bolted from her seat and fled to the bathroom. Clammy pencil still in hand, much as if it were gummed there, Jane rushed past Mrs. Elliot and Mr. Spinks and did not even noticed the shifty old-people gleam in their eyes, or that they hurried towards her desk even as she left it.
