Chapter 15

“Where were you Elliot?” Jacoby asked me. I had to admit, it could have been a lot worse if somebody else had found me.

“I just got some fresh air.” I lied.

“For almost two hours?” Jacoby gave me a solemn look. I felt guilty lying to him. He was always the one who looked out for me. He wouldn’t get mad if I told him the truth. Would he?

Sighing, I replied, “I went to go see Loanna.”

“Even though you aren’t supposed to?”

“Yes.”

My brother frowned at me and stood up from my bed. “Otto was the one to find that you were missing.”

My eyes grew wide and I quickly asked, “Does anybody else know?”

“No. He told me and I told him to tell me if somebody else were to come near here. Why would you go over there when you know you aren’t supposed to?” Jacoby asked me desolately.

“I wanted to talk to her. I wanted to tell her I was sorry.” I mumbled, looking down at my shoes.

“What if it were mum instead of me? You would really be in trouble then.” A sympathetic look took up his face. He was actually worried about me. Guilt began to seep through my veins.

“I know. Thank you.” I said, looking back up at him. He gave me a somber smile before turning his head sharply toward the door. My eyes locked on the door also.

“But he’s asleep Aleks!” a small voice said from behind the door.

“Well then we can wake him up.”

We both watched as my door opened and Aleksander and Otto entered. Otto looked relieved to see that I was there and I gave him a grateful smile. As one, the three of us turned to look at Aleksander. He had his head tilted and his mahogany colored hair was falling in front of his calculating eyes.

“I thought he was asleep.” Aleksander said to the youngest brother. Otto shrugged and flopped down onto my bed, crossing his legs Indian style.

I watched as Aleksander drank in my appearance and I began to wish I had kicked off my shoes. “Why are you all dressed?” he asked.

I shrugged and looked away from him. He wasn’t going to get me in trouble this time. No he wasn’t.

“Why is your arm bleeding?” Aleksander asked, walking toward me. I stepped back from him and tried to hide my arm. The cut was deeper than I had thought.

Looking back up at my oldest brother, I watched as his eyes flew to the open window, then back to me, the pieces falling together. “You left didn’t you? That’s why you are all dressed with your shoes on and your window is open. You went to go see your little girlfriend huh? Oh man mom is going to be so mad!” he grinned.

My eyes narrowed into slits and if I had my wand I would have cursed him. I was tired of playing my brother’s games. I was tired of him getting me in trouble. I was tired of him being a creep toward me. I was done. I wasn’t going to deal with this anymore.

“You’re an arrogant jerk and I wish you weren’t my brother.” I said through gritted teeth. My face was burning with anger and I could feel my blood boiling.

“That’s no way to talk. You would think you wouldn’t want me to tell mum. That’s not going to stop me from telling her.” Aleksander chortled.

“Aleks.” Jacoby said in a warning voice.

“No. You can’t protect him now Jake. He deserves whatever he gets.” He retorted his eyes glued onto me.

“At least he isn’t a clueless idiot.” I said, my ice blue eyes focused on his chocolate ones.

This got him mad and he folded his arms over his chest defensively. “Watch it little bro.”

“I’m not your bro!” I shouted and angry red sparks shot out from me toward Aleksander. He ducked and the sparks bounced off my door. Otto’s little body jumped and almost fell from off the bed. This distracted Jacoby and I was able to grab my wand and my flute from off my dresser.

Deciding it was time to leave, I rushed from out of my room and down the hall. My parent’s room flew open and my mom came out. “Elliot? What was that noise?”

I completely ignored her and pushed my way past her. My head was pounding I was so furious. My own brother was against me. Why should I have to stay in a place where I was the enemy? I rushed into the kitchen and out the backdoor. Swiftly, I brought the flute to my lips shakily and began to play Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. Almost immediately, I heard a light pop to my right, and Melody gave me a bright smile.

She gave me a quick look over, and a frown graced her lips. “Elliot, what’s wrong?”

“Can you take me away from here?” I pleaded with her.

“Sure.” Her honey eyes flashed. She offered me her hand as the backdoor opened again.

“Elliot!”

I turned my head and locked eyes with my mother’s. Her chocolate brown eyes resembled Aleksander’s so much. It enlightened the flame in my chest. Unlike Aleksander’s though, her eyes were full of fear. Fear of me leaving no doubt. She should have seen this coming. She shouldn’t have tried to keep me away from Loanna. She shouldn’t have taken Aleksander’s side.

Without looking away from my mother, I took Melody’s hand. A smile fell onto my lips as I felt the pull around my navel. Then her chocolate brown eyes were gone.
