Not quite. This website allows its users to upload, well, documents. That can be pretty much anything - term papers, newspaper articles, essays, umm... transcripts of any kind, personal writings, and so on... And copyrighted books as well, I guess. The legality isn't 100 percent clear as far as sites such as this one go.
Think YouTube for written documents.

As I understand it, the content on Scribd is uploaded by its users, not the site staff or anything, so acting on DMCA notices is the best they can do, I guess. Again, much like YouTube I suppose.
