A very small percentage of Fan Fiction stays in canon. We call stories like this Alternate Universe, because only in an alternate universe would Harry be sorted Slytherin, or Draco date Hermione or Ginny. It's very much allowed.

I would personally suggest you specify in your introduction/first post that yours is an Alternate Universe (or AU) story, so your readers are warned/intrigued and ready for what you're offering.
