Rumor: Ralph Fiennes in Voldemort Summary:
Rumor: Ralph Fiennes is in talks to play Lord Voldemort In GOF Article: The Daily Mail Newspaper is reporting the following.
Artical:
Award-winning actor Ralph Fiennes is in negotiations to play Harry Potter's arch nemesis Lord Voldemort.
If contracts can be agreed, Fiennes will play the ultimate practitioner of the Dark Arts in Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire, which began filming at 'Harry's home' over at Leavesden studios last month.
However, scenes involving Voldemort aren't scheduled to shoot until the end of the year, which would suit Fiennes as he is currently in Kenya filming The Constant Gardener opposite Rachel Weisz.
That picture is based on John le Carre's novel and is being directed by Fernando Meirelles.
After that, the classically trained thespian will join Natasha Richardson and Vanessa Redgrave in the Merchant Ivory film, The White Countess.
Voldemort is an evil force able to possess the minds of others and get them to do his bidding.
He is generally referred to in J.K. Rowling's books as He Who Must Not Be Named, or You Know Who for short, and has, until now, not been seen - unless you count the glimpse of a disfigured face poking out of the back of the ill-fated Professor Quirrell's head like an overgrown boil in the first film.
But Fiennes would be an inspired choice, presumably on the part of Goblet director Mike Newell and producer David Heyman. The actor has already demonstrated a nice line in evil in the films Red Dragon and Schindler's List.
Next year, he hopes to play Hamlet for director Adrian Noble.
A spokeswoman for the Harry Potter film series told me: "Oh, he'd be really good, but there's no one in place yet. Obviously, they are speaking to people, but that role has not yet been cast."
In any event, the deal for Fiennes to play Voldemort would be complex because it would mean him signing to do three films.
Apart from Hamlet, which isn't a done deal yet, he has other stage plans for next year and 2006.
Fiennes's representatives would not take my calls, of which there were many.
