I think those who had seen death (Harry, Luna, Neville), could sense there was something beyond the veil, judging by their reactions in the book. Ron, Hermione, and Ginny werent nearly as entranced by it as the other three, and I think their direct relationship to death was the reason (as was why they could see Thestrals as well).
