ONE of the most anticipated movie events of the year has arrived, with boy wizard Harry Potter set to weave his magic across Tasmania today.

The third instalment in the popular movie franchise, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban , opens at Village Cinemas in Tasmania today -- one day before it opens in the US and a week before opening around Australia.

Hobart friends Tim Clark and Michael Titchen are among thousands of excited Potter fans, young and old, expected to pack cinemas around the state today.

Village Cinemas at Hobart, Eastlands, Glenorchy and Launceston will screen the film five times between 9.30am and midnight today, and Village state marketing manager Yurik Czyz expects every ticket to be sold.

"The first two Harry Potter films were phenomenal and this one is just as eagerly awaited," he said.

"There has been a huge interest in the film and we would expect to sell out opening day and probably most sessions right through the school holidays.

"My guess is they're going to be queued up long before the first session at 9.30am."

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Gary Oldman and runs for 142 minutes.

Village Cinemas negotiated with the film's distributor to have the release date brought forward to co-incide with Tasmania's school holidays, which are different than the rest of the country.

In another coup for Tassie audiences, Potter-mania will have barely subsided when the much-anticipated Shrek 2 opens in Tasmania next Thursday, a week before it opens interstate.
